DEAR FRIENDS OF LTSP,

On August 25, 2014, we began a new academic year atThe Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia(LTSP) — the 150th anniversary year! New and

returning students, faculty, and staff came together after theactivities of a summer filled with travel, study, teaching,preparation, and some welcome time for rest and recreation.

There was something even more notable about this newsemester. A highly acclaimed alumnus of LTSP, the Rev. Dr.David J. Lose, began his presidency of the seminary afterserving as professor and dean at Luther Seminary in St. Paul,MN, one of the eight seminaries of the Evangelical LutheranChurch in America (ELCA). At the same time we recognizeand give thanks for the leadership of the Rev. Dr. Philip D.W.Krey, who has served as dean, and then president of LTSP forthe past fifteen years.

In this annual report to our donors, we lift up a themethat weaves through the celebrations, new beginnings, andtransitions of this year. It is described by the word constancy,meaning “faithfulness in action.”

We see constancy of purpose as we review the past 150years, a clear dedication to the mission of this seminary as abody, centered in the Gospel of Jesus Christ, which exists toprovide leaders for the church in the world.

A second piece in this theme is the constancy ofsupport that from the beginning has sustained and equippedthe seminary for fulfilling its mission with boldness,faithfulness, and vision.

Over the years people like you have provided gifts toadvance the work of the seminary, and, in these times, muchof that support is for student scholarships that enablestudents to pursue their calls to ministry. Gifts have also beengiven to provide for classrooms, technology, chapel, andstudent housing. This report is offered as a way to thank youfor your constancy of support, and to recognize the “Cloudof Witnesses” who continue to bless the seminary throughtheir planned gifts, such as wills, charitable gift annuities, andlife insurance.

John Kaufmann Bequest

For 44 years the Rev. Dr. John A. Kaufmann served The Lutheran Theological Seminary atPhiladelphia (LTSP) as registrar, keeping track of seminarians and their records of academic andpersonal progress from 1946 to 1990. After his retirement, John Augustus Kaufmann continued to

work for LTSP, fulfilling special assignments for President Philip D.W. Krey and serving as assistantsecretary of the LTSP Board of Trustees. Kaufmann had a mindset of doing whatever it took. A stafferon a Saturday would see him carrying a ladder to perform chores around the campus. Others tell storiesof his particular care for the library tower clock. In addition to the work that John Kaufmann did forLTSP, he was also a generous contributor to the seminary’s annual Leadership Fund, most of which goesto provide financial aid to students. Then, at his death, Dr. Kaufmann insured that his generosity wouldcontinue in perpetuity. His bequest of more than $2 million for The Brossman Learning Center campaignand the Krauth Memorial Library was at that time the largest individual donation in the school’s history.

The Wright Chair

In 1980, The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia (LTSP) and a smallgroup of committed community pastors cast a new vision for a program of studywhere African American church leaders from many church traditions could

obtain a theological education. Under the dedicated guidance of Founder-Directorsthe Rev. Dr. Andrew Willis and the late Rev. Dr. Randolph Jones, the UrbanTheological Institute (UTI) was inaugurated. The UTI continues its commitmentto providing theological education to church leaders that is relevant for the AfricanAmerican community. The Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Sr. Chair for AfricanAmerican Studies is among the very few chairs in theological education named inhonor of an African American. We honor Dr. Wright as one of the first two AfricanAmericans to receive an advanced degree, the Master of Sacred Theology, from LTSPin 1949. His work as a servant of God, beloved pastor, and author energized andinspired the church and the community. Over $650,000 has been raised to celebratethe work of The Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Sr.

The Wiedemann Center

Early in 1961, brothers Otto F. Wiedemann (St. JohnLutheran Church, Center Square, PA) and Theodore A.Wiedemann (St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Norristown, PA)

gave the seminary 28 acres of land in Plymouth Township. Theboard of directors proudly hailed this gift and others as “tangibleevidence of the fact that our people are thinking of and supportingthe seminary and its work.” The Wiedemann brothers expressedthe thought that this land might become the site of an enlargedseminary, but they placed no restrictions on its ultimate use. Theseminary decided that the land was not suitable for relocation andoperated it as a farm until it was sold. Proceeds from the sale of theland eventually became a $2.5 million investment towards theconstruction of the Wiedemann Center, dedicated in 1998.

Chapel Bell Tower Renovations

The chapel bell has rung for many years, calling The LutheranTheological Seminary at Philadelphia (LTSP) community toworship and bearing witness to passers by on Germantown

Avenue. But over the 2013 school year, the bell tower started to crumbleworn by the elements and the damage of a 2011 earthquake. Thanks tothe witness of those who have gone on before us, the seminary will berepairing the chapel’s bell tower this fall using the Philip and Dora BeckerFund. Their estate gift of $300,000 is a testimony of their faithfulnessand their belief in the mission of LTSP. Planned gifts allow our friendsand alumni to extend their commitment to theological education beyondtheir lifetime. With the renovations provided by the Philip and DoraBecker Fund, the bell in the chapel tower will continue to ring forth thepraises of our Lord.

Addie Butler

Dr. Butler has given generously of her time andtalents to LTSP. She has served on the Board ofTrustees, as a financial mentor to students, and is

a strong supporter of the seminary. When asked what ledher to be such a faithful advocate for theologicaleducation, Dr. Butler said, “I knew the truth of Romans10:14+15 (…how shall they hear without a preacher?)before I learned these verses appear in the Bible andbefore my Board tenure began.” Because of her experiences with the pastors in her church, Dr. Butler knew theimportance of training people to open up the scriptures, exploring the connection between life and faith in sermonsand bible studies. Knowing that pastors matter, Dr. Butler became a life-long friend of the seminary.

Grover and Irma Wright Scholarship

Irma S. Wright continues to devote her energies to growing andsustaining the scholarship fund in support of African AmericanLutheran students who seek to become rostered professional leaders

in the church. The fund is housed at the The Lutheran TheologicalSeminary at Philadelphia (LTSP). “I love young people and try to

encourage them to want to do something with their life. This is the fruits of the things that [Grover] used to do andnow I’m the one to keep it moving! Thank God I made the right decision!” Irma Wright exclaims, speaking of hersustaining gift of $75,000 to establish The Grover C. and Irma S. Wright Scholarship Fund in the fall of 2010. Herextraordinary gift is the single largest African American Lutheran gift to LTSP in its history.


THE THEODORE GERHARDT TAPPERT SOCIETYGifts of $2,500 or moreDr. Theodore G. Tappert — theologian, historian,author — was a beloved professor of church historyand Lutheran Confessions at the seminary from1930–1973. For many years, Dr. Tappert’s translationof The Book of Concord was the definitive scholarlyedition in use throughout the English-speaking world.

The Episcopal Chair

On April 9, 2014, LTSP’s Chair of Anglican Studieswas officially named for the Rev. Dr. FrederickHouk Borsch, professor at LTSP for nearly a

dozen years and former bishop of the Episcopal Diocese ofLos Angeles. Though Bishop Borsch has long been achampion of Anglican studies at the seminary, the chair’sfunding actually comes from the enormous generosity ofthe late Anna Werner of Northeast Philadelphia, a retiredschool teacher who lived a simple life and whose legacy of$1.2 million made the Anglican Chair at LTSP possible.This chair continues to be a sign of a great love that isgrowing between two church bodies that serve anoverlapping territory.

Krauth Memorial Library

When the seminary relocated to Mt. Airy in 1889, theexisting library collection of about 20,000 volumeswas placed in the rooms on the top floor of the Gowen Mansion. The space was inconvenient, cramped,

and subject to fire hazards and the deteriorating effects of intense summer heat. The board of directors agreed tolook for funding and an architect to build a new library. But Professor H.E. Jacobs saw a newspaper article that Mr.B. Frank Weyman (1842–1919), the patent holder for Copenhagen snuff, had just sold his business for $3 milliondollars. Knowing that Mr. Weyman was an active member at First Lutheran Church in Pittsburgh, PA, ProfessorJacobs wrote asking for financial support of the library’s construction. Weyman eventually agreed under theconditions that the building be named for his former pastor, the late Charles Porterfield Krauth. The KrauthMemorial Library was completed in 1908, twenty-five years after the death of the man it honored. Donated after hisdeath, Dr. Krauth’s personal library comprised the bulk of the library’s original collection. Now the seminary boastsover 200,000 volumes with access to 413,000 items through the Eastern Cluster Lutheran Library system.

The Charles A. Schieren Professorship

The pastor of the Church of the Redeemer in Brooklyn, NY kept his eye out for people who wouldmake great partnerships with the seminary, including The Hon. Charles A. Schieren, a merchant,banker, philanthropist, and former mayor of Brooklyn. In 1911, he gave $40,000 to establish a

professorship and an additional $10,000 to construct a house on campus for the new professor. Theendowment of the Schieren professorship allowed LTSP to realize the hope for a graduate school. AsCharles M. Jacobs asserted, “One of the purposes of our graduate school will be to emphasize thenecessity in these days of a scholarly and studious ministry; to impress upon the rising generation ofpastors, the importance to them and to the church, of an education which does not stop.” The graduateschool, the first in any Lutheran seminary in America, was opened promptly in the fall of 1913.

The LTSP Office for Philanthropy staff regularly hear thesecomments, and they help to open a conversation which can resultin increased income for you, while also helping to support the

school that helped prepare you or your pastor for ministry.The following is an actual example of such an opportunity:

A retired pastor and his spouse had faithfully given modest gifts tothe seminary during his active ministry. In a recent conversation, herecalled his years at the seminary and how important the foundation hereceived at Philadelphia was to him as he served the Lord and his church.

His wife had also reflected upon the important role that seminaries playfor everyone who is interested in the future of the church.

The couple was introduced to an easy method of accomplishing theirgoals. A Charitable Gift Annuity is a simple exchange of an asset (such ascash, stock, or even real estate) for regular income for the remainder ofboth of their lives. In this case, he was 77 and she was 79. Based on theirages, they could receive a 6.0 percent rate of return! This was significantlymore than they were getting from their CD, so they decided to maketheir gift, and by doing so their income actually increased! They alsoreceived some attractive income tax advantages, and were pleased thatultimately the seminary would receive what was left.
