versatile in changing

markets, keeping their

father’s legacy going

Right now, Gordon Enter-prise LLC has both loggingequipment and several trucks.On the logging side, they have a518 CAT skidder from the mid1970s and an International doz-er. On the trucking side, GordonEnterprise LLC has a 1978 Pe-terbilt dump truck, a 1977 Ken-worth long logger W900A, a 1969Kenworth 923 dump truck and fi-nally a 1992 T800 Kenworth witha mid-70s Crown self-loader.

In 1985, the Gordon brothers’father Robert C. Gordon startedwith a dump truck built roads forValentine Logging as well asworked cleaning ponds at theCentralia Coal Mine, then WID-CO.

“I grew up around trucks rid-ing with my dad and he reallyhelped me out getting my CDLwhen I was 18,” the younger RobGordon said about his dad.

Gordon went to Washington

State University to study engi-neering but continued to drivetrucks for a farm outside ofColton. Then in 2006, Rob’s dadpassed away unexpectedly from abrain tumor and the GordonBros. had to decide how to divideup the company or consolidate.

They decided to keep theequipment which consisted of twodump trucks, a pup trailer, a tiltdeck trailer and the dozer. Robmoved back to Thurston Countyand continued his dad’s work.

“When my dad passed away Ilooked at what I enjoyed doing,and at the time that was drivingtruck and farming,” Rob told Log-gers World in 2013. “I thoughtthat trucking might be my call-ing, and I felt that if that wassomething I was going to do, thiswas going my best opportunitybecause we already had theequipment as well as the contactsand the support of the contrac-tors.”

Jon works for Holbrook Inc.and Ryan is a forester. They keepthere full-time jobs and help Rob

when a side logging job comesup or a truck needs to be ran.

“I kind of jump in whatevertruck we need for the day, de-pending on what’s in demand,”Rob said.

Dump trucks saw a drop indemand in 2009 when the con-struction slowdown happenedfrom the recession. Rob had justbought a 1992 T800 Kenworth toturn into a dump truck but see-ing the changing markets, heturned it into a self loader.

“We’d hire self-loaders tocome and get the wood, but wefound that they were makingmore money out of the job thanwe were,” Rob said. “We didn’thave any intention of runningour own self-loader full-time,but we figured that just run-ning it occasionally, it wouldpay for itself.”

With the surrounding areaonly having a handful of self-loaders, it means there is a sol-id demand for the self loader.Rob estimates the self-loaderhauls roughly 400 loads a year.

“It’s hard for me to stophauling logs,” Rob said. “Whenwe’re doing a logging job, I’musually making a run on theweekend or doing a morningload to move our own wood be-cause the self loader is so busy.We try to be versatile and withthe demand for the self-loaderit sometimes hard to stayahead of our own wood.”

Rob just recently got a low-boy trailer to help move equip-ment around for some of hiscontractors. M & M Loggingand Eager Beaver Cutting arefavorites for Rob, who at timescan be tied up for severalmonths hauling of jobs forthese contractors. Mainly hehauls around Lewis, Thurston,Mason, Cowlitz and Gray Har-bor counties in western Wash-ington.

“You gotta be honest other-wise you don’t have a good rep-utation,” Rob said.

In 2012, Rob began puttingtogether a long logger truckthat originally came out of PortAngeles, purchased by theChris Schultheis Farms. Robdrove while at WSU and lateracquired several years after re-turning to Bucoda, the finishedproduct was a 1977 Kenworthlong logger W900A that he had

to build the engine and get anew transmission for. He alsomade it a quick change so hecould haul to be used for multi-purpose, such as the lowboytrailer.

When construction picks upin the summer, Rob still hops inthe dump trucks as constructionrate are higher hourly and tendto be higher than log trucks. Helikes hauling logs more but sayshe can’t pass up the higher rateswhen they present themselves.

“On some days, I’ve been in

three of our trucks,” Rob said.“We try not to do that as there issome downtime making theswitch but sometimes that iswhat the work demands.”

Gordon’s truck shop in Buco-da not only allows Rob to do hisown maintenance on trucks, italso serves as his brothers raceshop for their Jeeps. Ryan andJon are very active in the PacificNorthwest 4WD Association,racing on the competition side ofthe organization.

Rob also works a cattle

ranch that was once his greatgrandfathers, He too was in thetimber industry as a faller. Gor-don’s Skookumchuck Ranch waspart of with the family for gener-ations, with the farm house dat-ing back to the 1870’s and whereRob now is running around 25head of registered Black Angus.

And that’s not all, as he’sbeen with the Bucoda Fire De-partment since 1998 and has

been the Assistant Fire Chief forthe past ten years. This dutyplaces him in charge of thetraining and the maintenanceprogram for the departmentwhile also managing reports andwriting grants.

To add to that, Rob serves onthe Bucoda City Council and al-so fills in as the city snow plowdriver since Bucoda only has onepaid maintenance employee.

“It’s kind of a two-way street,I plow the streets to allow emer-gency vehicles to get to people’shouses,” Rob said. “People mightcomplain about the snowplowcoming through and creating aberm at their driveway theymight have to shovel, but whenthey find out it's to help fire ve-hicles get to their house, they’reappreciative.”

If that isn’t enough to keep aguy busy Rob also tries to spendas much time as he can with hisfamily, wife Miriam, son Jakob(2) and daughter Anna (8Months)

“They are very supportiveand make my busy schedule pos-sible, but they also make meslow down and take a breakfrom time to time.”

Rob and his brothers liveclose by to one another and helpeach other when needed. While

the two other brothers have fulltime jobs, they help in a pinch.

“They let me be and that’s agood thing since I tend to be in-dependent and self-sufficient butif I have a breakdown or some-thing they always step up tohelp,” he said.

There doesn’t appear to beany slow down with Gordon En-

terprises LLC. They continuetheir father’s legacy and Robmight be doing plenty of differ-ent things, he does them welland keeps rock, logs and evensnow rolling SouthwesternWashington.

CRAFTSMANSHIPLloyd Johnson’s work has a real knackfor detail as he’s poured years of experi-ence into his wooden trucks that can bemade to specifications of the customer.

The big truck makers aren’tthe only ones that canmake trucks.

Lloyd Johnson has beenmaking trucks of all types fordrivers the last 17 years, just ona different scale. The Princeton,Idaho craftsman gets photos of adriver's truck and makes a scale

wood toy model of that truck. The resemblance is uncanny

and probably something evenSanta’s Workshop couldn’t pulloff.

when he watched his grandpabuild a cabin and hobby wood-shop. During the process, hetaught Johnson how to build anduse wooden tools. His grandpaworked for the Forest Service inPotlatch for 39 years, when heretired he made the cedar cabinin Coeur D’Alene Idaho.

“My grandpa and his friendbuilt a canoe in 1930,” Johnsonsaid. “It’s 87-years-old now and Ihave it at my home.”

Along with a love for wood-working, Johnson also developeda love for trucks.

“I would also ride in aFreightliner cattle truck with mydad and I loved it,” Johnson said.“I rode a log truck with friends afew times, and a wheat truckwith my cousin and he let me

drive the truck.”Johnson was born deaf and

grew up in Gooding, Idaho andthen went to the Idaho StateSchool for the Deaf and Blindfrom 1976 to 1982. There wood-shop teacher, Harry Reed, reallyhelped foster Johnson’s interestin woodworking.

In February of 2000, he be-gan building wood trucks for thefirst time. It began as toys forkids to play with, but as things

usually go, the adults liked thetoys as much as the kids.

Johnson now travels to sever-al logging shows in the PacificNorthwest to show his productbut the internet has also giventhe craftsman a chance to reachout year-round. He travels toLibby, Montana and Morton,Washington and almost every-

These aren’t just generical-ly shaped trucks, but Johnsongoes in-depth with each of histrucks - matching up with thecustomer’s own truck. He evenmakes all the wheels for thetrucks. He buys red fir, cuts itto the proper thickness anddrills holes for the lugs. Hefinishes them off with a latheand a chisel.

Along with making trucks,he makes fence repairs forhouses, ranches and farms. Hecan repair and make leatheritems for saddles. Johnson al-so enjoys the time-tested hob-bies of mowing his lawn, re-modeling the house whenneeded and cutting his ownfirewood.
