This Week’s Feature Story by Arlena SmithBy Jan Critchley
Boogie Woogie Time at Myett’s
“The Piano Man” as he is known, will take the
stage at Myetts, on Saturday 21st and 23rd.
Mitch Woods is a one-man-band and consummate
performer. His New Orleans style vintage rock n’ roll is
a show in itself. Make sure to get there early enough
for a seat – but with this rockin’ boogie-woogie sound,
you won’t be sitting long anyway. For more informa-
tion contact Myett’s at 495-9649.
If you haven’t been exposed to the hand clappin’,
foot stompin’, fingers flying up and down the piano
keyboard sounds of “Boogie-Woogie” – you are in for
a treat. Myett’s is hosting legendary pianist Mitch
Woods and his brand of music dubbed “rock-a-boo-
gie.” Mitch Woods brings to his performance the
authentic sound of blues inspired rock n’ roll, resur-
recting the sounds of the iconic greats in this genre,
including Professor Longhair and Fats Domino.
Woods started out in his home state of New York
as a student of jazz and classical music. A move to
San Francisco in the 70s changed all that with the
exposure to “jump” and rhythm and blues. By the mid
80s, after a time as solo performer in area clubs, Mitch
formed his Rocket 88s band and began to play in larg-
er blues-oriented music festivals. Now two decades
later Woods and his band put a fresh spin on the
music of the 30s and 40s that gave birth to rock n’ roll.

Lime ...“to hang around idly” or “to go out on thetown.”Source: The Dictionary of Virgin Islands EnglishCreole by the late educator and historian Lito Valls. The Limin’ Times brings you all the news aboutwhen and where to “lime” in the British VirginIslands.
this is so important to you at this time and why you
are having this reaction. Would him saying the words
whether he meant them or not give you some reassur-
ance or were you just feeling embarrassed because
he didn't echo your feelings?
The thing is, by his actions you should have an
idea of how he feels about you. Anyone can say "I love
you" but this is one time when actions do speak loud-
er than words. If he demonstrates no love or care
towards you, then that is a different story and you
have to check to make sure you are not being used.
However, is he acts his love out daily in kind ways and
caring gestures, then don't force the words, they will
come when he is ready.

Dear Koren,
Men are wretched creatures. After six months of
dating, I told my boyfriend I loved him and he didn't
answer. Then I said it again a week later and he just
said cool. I asked him why he responded like that and
he had the nerve to say he is not down like that right
now. What is that supposed to mean?
–Confused
Dear Confused,
Gee, I wish you had asked him what that means
instead of putting me on the spot! It could mean sev-
eral things; maybe it is still too early for him to say it
and he has a timeline, in the same way that most
women have a timeline for sex. Maybe he does not
want to say those words until he is convinced he real-
ly feels that way; or it could be that the second you
say that to somebody, the expectations in the rela-
tionship changes drastically and you must behave a
certain way at all times.
The last thing you want is to pressure someone
into saying something or making a commitment that
they are not ready for. You also want to consider why

I’m not a chauvinist – far from it! Naive at times
certainly. Doubtful…Of course! But, not in my wildest
dreams – and there are many – would I have believed
women would have taken over.
Yes, for a VERY long time, I’d been hearing how
women were going to take over. I was stupid enough
not to believe it – naïve you might say.
Then, right before my eyes, in my very own sport,
I got slapped in the face – but still denied. You see, it
was 10 years ago, when the unthinkable began. I
NEVER believed it would EVER happen! Excuse the
naïve side.
From 1970-2005, men were the
face of track and field in the British
Virgin Islands. Following in the foot-
steps of guys like Cecil Dawson,
Derry Maduro Fahie, Robert
Mathavious, Dale Abrahamson and
Gene Hodge among others in the
late 60s into the early 70s, I along
with Guy “Toby” Hill, Jerry Molyneaux, Lindel “Chef”
Hodge, Rawle “Lolly” Hannibal, carried the baton into
regional and international competitions well into the
80s before passing on to the likes of Willis “Chucky”
Todman, Keita Cline and Dion Crabbe. Then Eric
“Shaq” Matthias and Omar Jones. Wait, I didn’t see
the names were getting less and less. When Cline and
Crabbe left, well, there was no one to pass the baton
too on the track – but I was too tired recovering from
my leg to see what was happening – no one brought
my usual dose of smelling salts for revival.
Then in 2005, men fell completely off the radar as
the women took over! Tahesia Harrigan won a medal
at the CAC Sr. Championships and qualified for the
IAAF World Championships – a streak in progress.
Then in 2006, the youth movement kicked in as
coaches Winston Potter, Dag Samuels and Willis
“Chucky” Todman’s young charges began to rise up.
Chantel Malone and Shanice Hazel began winning
medals at the Carifta Games, followed by Kanishque
Todman at the CAC Jr. Championships, then came
Nelda Huggins, Lakeisha “Mimi” Warner and twin sis-
ters Trevia and Tynelle Gumbs. All the while, Harrigan
who added Scott to her name, was picking up CAC
Games medals and an IAAF World Indoor
Championships 60m bronze medal
and last year, Malone struck gold at
the CAC Games – continuing a gold
medal streak that began with
Crabbe in 2002.
Finally, in 2013, Eldred Henry
ended a 10-year medal drought at
the Carifta Games and Kyron
McMaster followed suit in 2014.
Over the weekend, both males showed that the boys
are coming back in town. Henry won the US National
Jr. Colleges Shot Put crown and we second in the
weight throw – after winning the Discus Throw out
doors in 2014.
McMaster – who only took up the event a year ago
and has less then 10 races under his belt – ran a
dynamic 400m Hurdles race against St. Kitts-Nevis’
Oneil Thomas Friday, coming 0.04 seconds short –
51.83-51.87.
So, while the women remain strong, I don’t have
to dodge, “the where are the boys,” question from
regional colleagues. Listen fellas, the boys are coming
back in town!!
Kyron McMaster left, Eldred Henry right

This 2010, romantic comedy-drama written and
directed by Mike Mills, tells the story of 38-year-old
Oliver Fields (Ewan McGregor), a somewhat solitary
graphic artist in Los Angeles grieving after the death
of his father, Hal (Christopher Plummer).
Flashback to three years earlier, shortly after the
death of Oliver’s mother, Georgia (Mary Page Keller).
At this moving time, Hal confesses to his son that he
is gay and goes on to embrace the lifestyle he had
always hidden and becomes very active in the local
gay community, finds love and becomes more honest
with himself and his son. Sadly, Hal is diagnosed with
terminal lung cancer, and Oliver stays by his side till
the end.
Two months after Hal’s death, Oliver is in a state of
functional depression and has adopted his father’s
beloved Jack Russell terrier, Arthur – who he can bear
to leave alone. Oliver’s friends talk him into going to a
costume party and so with Arthur at his side and
dressed as Sigmund Freud, Oliver gives impromptu
psychoanalysis and meets Anna (Melanie Laurent) an
aspiring actress, dressed as Charlie Chaplin and is
“silent,” communicating with only pen and paper.
From there, they start a tentative relationship that
ebbs and flows with their personal uncertainties, and
she goes to New York for a filming assignment.
Through a series of flashbacks, Oliver looks back on
his life and begins to see his childhood as a time
marked by his parent’s difficult and distant relation-
ship. He also realizes that both parents had known
about Hals sexuality from the beginning which had
been hidden, as was the fact that his mother was from
a Jewish family and had been discriminated against
whilst growing up during WWII – and he realizes the
emotional pain that surrounded them, living in an era
when such lifestyles were taboo.
When Anna returns to LA, the two decide to move
in together, but sharing a home life together proves to
be more stressful that either expected and Anna
returns to New York. Oliver is devastated by the
break-up and some time later, he resolves to contact
Anna again and flies to New York, where he makes yet
another discovery, but this time one that can see him
having happiness and contentment in his life at last.

The objective is to fill the full 9x9 grid with digits so
that each column, each row, and each of the nine
3x3 “sub-grids” that compose the main grid con-
tains all of the digits from 1 to 9 – with no repeats
within each row or column within the entire square.
A partially completed grid is usually provided,
which typically has a unique solution. See next
weeks Limin’ Times issue for solution.
