Department Changes This past year has been an exciting and changing year for the Department of Family Medicine. Dr. Kim LeBlanc, previous Chairman, was recruited by the National Board of Medical Examiners to be the Executive Director of the Clinical Skills Evaluation Collaboration in Philadelphia, PA. Dr. LeBlanc left in September and Dr. Herbert Muncie was appointed the Interim Chairman of the Department. We are pleased to announce that Dr. Mary Coleman has been selected by Dean Nelson to serve as the new Chair of the Department as of July 1, 2014. Dr. Coleman is currently Director of Community Health in the Dean’s Office but previously was a Professor of Family Medicine at the University of Louisville and just prior to joining LSU was the Dean of Ross University, Dominica West Indies. Medical Students Choosing Family Medicine The faculty and community preceptors continued to provide a valuable educational experience in family practice for the junior and senior students. The students value their experience with practicing family physicians and the number of students choosing Family Medicine as a career was the highest in over 10 years. Sixteen LSU students chose a residency in Family Medicine. Of those 16students, 10 have stayed in Louisiana to train. Here are the students and their training institution:

Report of LSUHSC Rural Scholars Track The LSUHSC Rural Scholars Track is proud to announce our graduating class of 2015: Jonathan Sossamon, Ashley Ingolia, and Roxanne Varnell. This recent class brings the total number of additional primary care physicians produced through RST to 60 since the first graduation class of 2005. Of the 60 graduates 17 are currently residents and 43 are currently practicing. We are very excited about these numbers, as the program is over a decade old.
