Engineering your studio lighting project from concept to completion

LSI Studio Projectslighting, dimming, control, suspension, airconditioning

LSI Studio Projects provides a complete consultancy, design, installation,

commissioning and training service for lighting and ancillary systems used

in broadcast TV and film studios.

Our team of experienced design, installation and support engineers has

provided professional studio lighting facilities for TV broadcast and motion

picture studios in Africa, China, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia for

over twenty years.

Many of the world’s most famous broadcasters, including the BBC,

Al Jazeera - Qatar, BSkyB - UK, RTE - Ireland, RUV - Iceland, and

ERTU - Egypt, rely on LSI Studio Projects to provide the best in studio

lighting, on time and budget.

Lighting, control and dimming systems

LSI Studio Projects is a leading authority in TV and film lighting schemes. We

carefully review a client’s programming requirements and develop a lighting system

that is appropriate to the size of studio, the operational needs and budget. Our

design team provides consultancy and advice based on extensive specialist

engineering expertise – we work from initial concept through to studio completion

to create world-class, cost-effective lighting solutions across the range of

broadcast and educational TV and film studio requirements.

Each LSI Studio Projects team member is an experienced broadcast lighting

engineer, and our knowledge base combines the best lighting techniques with

the latest regulations, technologies and products. Our technical teams not only

create detailed designs and documentation for a studio’s lighting system, they also

manage their assigned project right through to its conclusion. This ensures that

design integrity is maintained throughout the process of supply and installation.

Multipurpose studios, light entertainment, news and current affairs studios and

continuity studios each have specialised lighting requirements. LSI Studio Projects’

designers are experienced in all studio styles, applications and technologies

– technologies that include the latest automated lighting systems, low energy

sources, and high-speed data networks. Several LSI engineers have been

previously employed by national broadcasters, and now partner with clients and

system integrators to develop world-class projects.

LSI Studio Projects is an independent company that is not aligned to any particular

lighting product manufacturers. Our clients can be confident that whilst products

supplied are from renowned manufacturers, they will be chosen strictly on the basis

of performance criteria, studio suitability, sustainability and value for money.

Suspension systems

LSI Studio Projects’ technical expertise extends into all areas of mechanical

engineering concerned with a studio lighting suspension system. We are happy

to advise on the building’s grid structure, the choice between motorised hoists or

telescopes and pantographs, and of course, the most appropriate controller for

safe operation of the system.

It is vital to define load capacities and the quantity of point suspensions and

hoists for lighting equipment at an early stage of the building’s design so that the

suspension grid is adequately rated. We regularly provide architects and structural

engineers with expert knowledge of lighting suspension specifications during the

initial feasibility stages as part of our commission.

After a suitable suspension system is designed and the products selected, we

manage the full scheme from purchasing to installation and commissioning.

In addition to lighting suspension equipment, LSI Studio Projects also advises on

manual and motorised curtain tracks, drop out sections, curtains and cycloramas

that may be finished in white, Chromakey blue or black or other materials as

appropriate for the planned use of the studio.

Silent air-conditioning A studio’s air-conditioning system must be silent in use, and its installation is

closely associated to the lighting scheme – but often it is planned as part of the

standard building services and installed in isolation. This inevitably leads to design

conflicts when planning the lighting grid around previously installed air ducts,

resulting in delays and added costs. Consequently, the size and position of air

conditioning ducts have a significant effect on the layout of the lighting grid.

LSI Studio Projects has a new innovative solution to these problems – an

integrated lighting grid with silent, zoned cooling and heating wherever it is needed

within the studio.

LSI’s new ‘no compromise’ integrated lighting grid package includes air pods

within the lighting rig, which eliminates large air-handling units, inconvenient and

costly air ducts throughout the studio, noise attenuators and inefficient

air conditioning.

central control

For added control over zoned areas of the studio, the individual exhaust heads,

which are built into the lighting grid, can be controlled separately or in groups to

create the precise level of comfort.

The system also includes full heat recovery – energy which may be used for

underfloor heating of adjacent rooms, or hot water for central heating systems.

Most importantly, LSI’s integrated air-conditioning system is virtually silent

(NR15), and represents considerable cost savings compared with conventional

non-integrated schemes.

Project management and installation

LSI provides a ‘start to finish’ solution where clients choose the technical services

they require – from consultancy to a fully installed system, or just equipment

supply, or even a consultancy commission to provide a designed solution for others

to procure and install.

Our broadcast lighting operations provide end users with a complete range of

packages and options to suit their specific needs, budgets and timescales, but we

always leave the final choice of solution to the client.

For most clients, a major concern is the installation part of the package, and

this is where LSI’s extensive site-related expertise on large and small commissions

throughout the world is so critical to the success of projects. Our key strengths

are in lighting system design and site management, where running the site

safely is vital.

AL JAZEERA – DOHA, QATAR

Design and technical fit-out of international

News Studios in Doha - Qatar, London

– U.K., Kuala Lumpur - Malaysia, and

Washington – U.S.A. The brief was to supply

and install lighting and suspension systems

designed by a studio lighting consultant in

each of the four locations.

The suspension systems design involved

a unique system of overhead suspended

ladder truss rings from which the lighting

could be suspended.

We also supplied and installed: lighting

control and dimmers; Fresnel spotlights;

fluorescent lights; architectural LED fittings.

BBC MEDIA CITY, MANCHESTER, UK

Consultancy support in defining the lighting

requirements and layouts for 7 production

studios ranging in size from 80m² to 1200m²,

leading to the final design, procurement and

installation of all equipment.

The four main studios were fitted with steel

band lighting hoists with manual track and

barrel grids in the smaller studios.

We also supplied and installed lighting

controls, luminaires, dimmers, DMX and

Ethernet lighting networks, cyclorama

tracks and curtains, houselights, and

power metering.

GBC – GHANA BROADCAST COMPANY, ACCRA

LSI Projects was asked to provide

consultancy, design, supply, installation,

testing and commissioning of the complete

lighting system for all four studios, two of

which were 300m2, with one 200m2 and

one 50m2.

We designed a custom studio suspension

system for each studio based on a track

and barrel grid, which provided the most

cost-effective option for flexibility for the

available grid height.

We also supplied a mixture of conventional

and energy-efficient lighting, cyclorama

tracks and curtains.

SAUDI TV, DAMMAM

We were invited to provide consultancy,

design and engineering services for two

broadcast studios for Saudi TV: a 500m2

production studio and a 200m2 news studio.

The studio electrical power system was

designed with power distribution panel

boards each with non-dimmed circuits, and

the cable containment included distributed

outlets for dimmer circuits, non-dimmed

circuits and DMX data outlets.

We also supplied conventional and

energy-efficient studio lighting, dimmers,

cyclorama tracks and curtains.

NORTH WESTERN UNIVERSITY, QATARTwo complete studios had to be designed

to the latest broadcast TV standards,

but in such a way that the technical

infrastructure could be initially installed in a

temporary location for up to two years, then

subsequently dismantled and reassembled in

the new facility.

We designed complete ground-supported

studio structures, which included

pantographs and electrical power wiring and

data distribution. These were assembled

at LSI’s main facility, fitted out and tested

before being packed for air transport

to Doha.

AL JAZEERA - LONDON OLYMPICS, UKAl Jazeera TV asked LSI Projects to act as

principal contractor to provide a temporary

studio during the London Olympic Games.

The location was a 23-storey tower block

with a view of the Olympic park – a

perfect backdrop for their coverage of the

2012 Olympics.

LSI Projects supplied temporary power,

production lighting, studio and control suite

electrical distribution and air conditioning in

all the studio, control suites and VIP rooms

for Al Jazeera International, Al Jazeera

English and Al Jazeera Sport.

BSKYB HARLEQUIN COMPLEX,LONDON, UK Having won an international competition

to provide highly detailed consultancy on

a complete new broadcasting centre for

BSKYB, LSI then won the tender to deliver

the lighting solutions for nine studios.

The studios varied in size from 100 to

600 square metres with the first 5 studios

equipped with tungsten lighting and the

remaining studios changing to LED sources

for all cyclorama, key and soft-lights. To

make the whole centre efficient and to

reduce turn-around times any studio can be

controlled by any gallery.

BBC PACIFIC QUAYS, GLASGOW, UKWorking with BBC designers, LSI designed

five different lighting solutions for the studios

ranging from 30 to 760 square metres. The

broadcasting centre was the BBC’s first HD

tapeless centre and technology was at the

forefront of the designs.

For the large production studio LSI designed

lighting hoists which featured integral sine

wave distributed dimming with on-board

Ethernet network distribution, an innovation

that helped towards the entire building

operating from a single power source for all

technical, general and lighting power.
