Basic Technique Forming the Grip and Playing Position
Step 1: Make a fulcrum
The fulcrum is the pivot point in the hand by which the stick rotates. Start by forming your
hand like this, placing the pad of your thumb at the second joint of your pointer finger. Wrap
your pointer finger around the side of the thumb and close the gap between the two fingers.
Step 2: Grip the Stick
Find the balance point (at about the 2/3 point) on the stick and place your fulcrum.
Helpful hint: On a Vic Firth stick, between the flag and the H.
Lightly form the rest of the fingers around the stick and eliminate any gaps between fingers.
5
-
Step 3: Place the Hand in Playing Position
Place your hand with the bead of the stick hovering over the center of the drum. The back of
your hand should be close to flat, and you should be able to see the end of the stick when in
playing position.
Underneath view of the grip
*Notice how the fingers are closed/no gaps, and how the stick rests in the heel of the hand;
it is not in the middle of the hand.
6
-
Step 4: Repeat steps 1-3 for other hand
Form the grip in your other hand and place the beads of the stick in the center of the drum.
Together, the sticks should form close to a 90 degree angle.
Step 5: Executing the Stroke
The bead of the stick should hit the drum without any slicing. When initiating the stroke, the
bead of the stick should be the first thing to move. Keep the same stick angles and pay special
attention to the path of the stick to get the most efficient stroke possible.

Playing Areas or Zones
Snare Drum
Center
The primary playing area on the marching
snare drum is the very center of the drum.
Playing in the center produces a full tone
and snare response, with the most articulate
sound.
Halfway between the center and edge
Playing halfway between the center and the
edge produces a sound with good resonance,
but less articulate than playing in the center.
The edge
Playing close to the edge at the front of the
drum produces a thin and articulate sound
which is useful for soft passages.
On the right edge over the snare bed
Playing on the right edge over the snare bed
is similar to the front edge, with more snare
response.

Playing Areas or Zones
Tenors
Primary Playing Zones
The primary playing zones are used for the
majority of tenor playing.
Secondary Playing Zones
The secondary playing zones are used for
the majority of t.
Map of the Playing Zones
This is a map of the many
different playing zone positions
that the tenors may play in with
the appropriate playing position.

Playing Areas or Zones
Bass Drums
Primary Playing Zone - Center (#1)
This is the general purpose playing area. It
produces a resonant sound with good
definition.
Secondary Playing Zone - 1/2 To Rim (#2)
This area can be used for all volume levels.
It produces a very resonant sound but lacks
definition.
Ternary Playing Zone - Close to Rim (#3)
This area is used for special effects and soft,
delicate playing. It produces a thin, tonal
sound.

Dynamics
The following dynamic levels/heights are used to unify the sound and look of the
ensemble. These levels are used to achieve the composer’s musical intent and is a major part of
how the percussion ensemble maintains the integrity of the music.

Defining Dynamics within the music
Reading marching percussion music can be frustrating at first. Often in marching
percussion music, a written dynamic will only refer to the accent height of a particular
phrase. For example:
...would be interpreted as...
In addition, phrases with crescendos or decrescendos would be interpreted as:
13
-
43
Another example of commonly misinterpreted notation in marching percussion music is
when an accent is over a note with a slanted line through it. Notating the music in this way helps
to simplify the page and avoid clutter.
Intensity of the Stroke
In general, volume is created by stick height but can be altered appropriately to achieve the
musical intent of a particular pattern or musical phrase. Some of the reasons to alter the intensity
of the stroke are (will be considered while the music is being taught):
1. Tempo is too fast
2. An individual or the ensemble is out of balance
3. A certain touch is needed to achieve a better FEEL
4. It is affecting the quality of sound
...would be interpreted as...
This excerpt is from a Blue Knights packet and is common in marching percussion music.

The 10 Golden Snare Rules
1. RELAX – don’t use any more muscles than necessary.
2. Always maintain a strong fulcrum and relatively flat hands.
3. Be particular about your playing area for a uniform sound. This
also applies to rimshots.
4. The stick must always contact the head with its full velocity,
especially when playing low. Play through the drum!
5. Always play with proper stick heights.
6. Hands not playing should remain in playing position with the
bead of the stick barely above the drumhead.
7. Sound quality. Sound quality. SOUND QUALITY.
8. PRACTICE WITH A METRONOME or music with steady time.
9. Don’t practice “above your head,” take one step at a time,
especially with tempos.
10. Chops are the key to playing great; burning muscle pain is your
friend.
15
-
The 12 Golden Quad Rules From Bill Bachman’s “Quad Logic”
1. RELAX – don’t use any more muscles than necessary.
2. Always maintain a strong fulcrum and relatively flat hands.
3. When playing around the drums, play just as you would on one
drum.
4. Maintain both the “X” and “Y” axis – turn your wrists no matter
where your forearms are moving your hands.
5. Always play in the playing areas. They produce the best sound and
are located conveniently.
6. The mallet/stick must always contact the head with its full
velocity, especially when playing low. Play through the drums!
7. Always play with proper heights; ESPECIALLY when moving
around the drums.
8. Hands not playing should be at rest in the set position over a
playing area in order for one to look confident and professional.
9. Shoulders DON’T move – quad stands will tempt you.
10. PRACTICE WITH A METRONOME or music with steady time.
11. Don’t practice “above your head,” take one step at a time,
especially with tempos.
12. Chops are the key to playing great; burning muscle pain is your
friend.
16
-
The 12 Golden Bass Rules From Bill Bachman’s “Bass Logic”
1. RELAX – don’t use any more muscles than necessary.
2. Always maintain a strong fulcrum.
3. Play in the center of the head with the mallet striking at a 45 degree
angle in relation to the forearm. (Check this next to a mirror.)
4. The mallet must always contact the head with its full velocity,
especially when playing low. Play through the drum!
5. Always be able to play the whole part with proper mallet heights
before attempting to split it up with the bass line.
6. Always know where the downbeats are and be able to count all of the
rhythms while marking time with your feet.
7. When playing splits always stay with the full ensemble, don’t adjust
your timing to a previous error within the bass line.
8. Hands not playing should be at rest in the set position in order for one
to look confident and professional.
9. PRACTICE WITH A METRONOME or electronically quantized
music.
10. Don’t practice “above your head,” take one step at a time, especially
with tempos.
11. Chops are the key to playing great—burning muscle pain is your
friend.
12. PLAY AGGRESSIVELY!!!!!!!

-Make sure that the pressure in your hands is consistent and that the stick resonantes
throughout the exercise
-Measures 1-8 and 10-14 should be played at the determined dynamic level (one height).
Measure 9 should be interpreted with accents at the written dynamic level, taps at 3"
-If someone had their back turned towards you, they should not be able to hear any
stickings. Strive for a perfect sound from hand to hand with no morphing of the 16th
grid
-Variation: All players play the snare part at any given dynamic level (no accents)

Timing Breakdown
Snare Drum
The goal here is to give the musician a better understanding of how to interpret the common rhythms
that are notated when playing music. Although rhythms can be notated in many different ways, an effort
was made to notate the rhythms in a way that they would most likely be seen in a majority of the music we
play. Compare the bottom, or "base" rhythm to the variations notated directly above. It is easy to see where
everything lines up with this system. When practicing, tap your foot while playing to solidify the pulse.
16ths
S. D.
S. D.
S. D.
Example A
Groupings of three can be notated in two different ways. In example A, the quarter note gets the beat while a
group of three has to fit into one quarter note. In example B, the dotted quarter note gets the beat. These two
variations sound the same, the only difference being the way they are notated. For our purposes, the next triple
variations will be notated with example B, where the dotted quarter note receives the beat. Follow the same
process, comparing the base rhythm to its variations. Don't forget to tap your foot!

Playing Focuses
Always be aware of where the quarter note pulse is in relation to the rhythm.
The sticking used is natural sticking (excluding the 8th note skelton rhythms).
Count each variation using a system of 1-e-&-uhs.

-Accented notes should be played at the dynamic of the exercise (12" in this case)
-Unaccented notes (taps) should be played at 3" from the drumhead
-Strive for a consistent sound quality and rhythm throughout the exercise
-Practice slowly to isolate each of the four stroke types and make sure to execute
them correctly: full, tap, down, and upstrokes

Playing Focuses
Always know where the downbeat is.
Listen for a consistent skelton rhythm throughout.
Make sure to apply the concepts from the accent tap exercise to here. Don't squeeze or close the hand
for the downstrokes, as the result will be an inaccurate rhythm.
Practice with taps at 3", accents at 12".

Playing Focuses
Listen to your sound and make sure that the second note of each double stroke is just as
loud as the first.
Practice filling in the entire triplet with the resting hand. This will help with rhythmic
accuracy of the exercise as a whole.
Basses practice the snare/tenor part as a variation.
Practice at different heights (3", 6", 9", 12", 15").

Playing Focuses
Stickings are written in short-hand; play the designated sticking until the next one appears
Keep the 16th note rhythm consistent throughout, regardless of sticking
