Around-the-clock, hospital healthcare

teams must com-municate complex information to one another in order to

provide the highest quality of care.

Imagine if we could bring that communication together in

a single, easy to carry device. We can, and it’s here—LRGHealthcare is

pleased to announce the addition of the Voalté Communication System.

Voalté iPhones provide the ability for an entire healthcare team to communicate with instant message

services. Nurses can speak and text with physicians, lab and x-ray technicians, as well as each other—receive and respond to patient

alarms and alerts; and provide general department updates, which saves time and money.

When you see any of our staff using cell phones, please know it is proactive management of patient care—communicating

and delivering quality, safety and satisfaction in a technology forward way.

Why is My Healthcare Team Using Cell Phones?

Are you living with diabetes, high blood pressure, chronic pain, or other health challenges?

Living Well: Better Choices, Better Health workshops help individuals who either have or care for someone with a chronic health condition.

The program focuses on increasing self-confidence, problem solving, and build-ing a “tool box” of techniques to help break free from fatigue, stress, pain, and other symptoms that often accompany a chronic health condition. Participants learn how to incorporate healthy eating, physical activity, medication manage-ment, and relaxation techniques to help them live well!

Dr. Paul Friend, Family Practice physi-cian at Westside Healthcare said, “I have been very happy with the results of the Living Well: Better Choices, Better Health. Patients feel empowered by the process and seem much more motivated to make changes in their lives. Being part of a group, working on similar problems reduces the feelings of isola-tion and gives hope that these medical obstacles are more manageable and less life controlling.”

Living WellSeveral months ago I participated in the Living Well program. I was reluctant at first, but after the first session, I began to realize how I was ‘in it for me’. I was particularly interested in the lessons re-garding nutrition and goal setting. The coaches are wonderful and the program has an easy pace. If you are thinking about participating, I would urge you to do so. Everyone can learn something from these sessions.

Bob Lucas, participant

LRGHealthcare Staff Carolyn Muller & Melissa Rizzo, leaders of the Living Well

workshops, were recognized with a Chronic Disease Self Management Program Cham-

pion Award given by Area Health Educa-tion Center (AHEC) and the NH Dept. of

Health and Human Services.

This past February I received a call from a staff member at Lakes Region Gen-eral Hospital. She was inquiring if someone from Central New Hampshire VNA & Hospice would be available to speak with a patient and her family about hospice care.

When I arrived, Mae was surrounded by her daughters and granddaughters. I could feel the love of family all around her. We talked about Mae, her family and their roles within the family. Mae had three daughters, ten grandchildren, and fifteen great grand-children. Her youngest daughter passed away two years earlier while receiving hospice care in her own home.

Mae had many joys in her life including cooking, baking, singing, and spending time with her family whenever possible. I learned so much about this loving family in such a short time.

Her family took turns sharing stories about all the wonderful things Mae did and the love she had for her family and friends. Day after day, family and friends came to her bedside in the hospital to share stories and reminisce about their past.

Mae passed away on March 3, 2012, surrounded by friends and family.

End-of-life care is so much more than pain and symptom management – it involves families and friends coming together to celebrate a life. Hospice is the model for com-passionate, end-of-life care that focuses on your loved ones comfort while provid-ing the support necessary for family members. The collaborative relationship between Central NH VNA & Hospice and LRGHealthcare recognizes the individual needs of patients and their families to say goodbye.

Join Andréa and Carolyn Crosby, MD, as they share one family’s experience with hospice care.

There will be an opportunity to speak with the presenters and family members.

PeoPle Are more ACtiVe todAy tHAn eVer Before — especially Baby Boomers. Those born between 1946 and 1964 not only work and play harder than the generations before them; they don’t allow physical limitations to hold them back as they age. This has resulted in a surge of knee replacement surger-ies, exceeding 500,000 in the United States each year.

The good news is that there is no better time to get a knee replacement than today, with the introduction of the GetAroundKnee™ from Stryker.

While traditional knee replacements are oval, this revolutionary new design is cir-cular; to best work with the body in replacing the naturally circular motion made as the knee flexes. This can lessen the stress absorbed by the quadriceps muscle — the muscle relied upon to move the legs.

A government-funded study has concluded that knee replacement surgery is a highly cost-effective procedure that improves quality of life for many years.

The orthopedic surgeons at Advanced Orthopaedic Specialists perform knee re-placement surgery using the GetAroundKnee™ for appropriate candidates. Ask your physician if the GetAroundKnee™ is a good fit for you.

Advanced technology, advanced medical training, and advanced surgical procedures have aptly lead to renaming orthopedic Professional Association — AdVAnCed ortHoPAediC SPeCiAliStS (AoS).

With a reputation as a personable and welcoming medical practice since 1960, Orthopedic Professional Association (OPA) has kept pace with technological advances in orthopedics to treat the full range of musculoskeletal conditions. Patients receive an accurate diagnosis using modern diagnostic techniques and the experience of Board certified and fellowship trained physicians, the top pro-fessionals in their field.

This has driven the group to make changes, beginning with a name that more accurately reflects a physician practice highly skilled in traditional and advanced surgical procedures.

After conducting extensive research that included feedback from patients and community members, it became clear that there was confusion over the OPA name and a preference for Advanced Orthopaedic Specialists.

“New doctors have joined the practice, we’ve expanded our services, upgraded to the most recent technologies, and further advanced our surgical skills,” said John Grobman, MD. “Advanced Orthopaedic Specialists helps us better highlight these steps forward.”

And it’s not just a pretty name, Advanced Orthopaedic Specialists provides cut-ting edge ultrasound and advanced procedures like direct anterior hip replace-ment and the new GetAroundKnee™ replacement. Customer service improve-ments are underway and the patient reception areas in the Gilford, Franklin, and Meredith offices will be updated.

The physicians will continue to advance their skills and knowledge, evolving with the changing science of orthopedic surgery so they can offer patients the newest treatment alternatives.

The top priority at Advanced Orthopaedic Specialists will re-main to provide patients with state-of-the-art treatment

in a respectful, collaborative, and compassionate atmo-sphere.

The team at Advanced Orthopaedic Specialists looks forward to helping more people return to those activities they enjoy most.

“Some may know I’ve spent a lot of time on the slopes of Gunstock. My children and grandchildren are also avid skiers and it’s comforting to know that, in an emergency, on or off the slopes, quality medical care is just ten minutes down the road. Countless pa-tients will benefit from these renovations; it’s simply the right thing to do.”

“Just as you need us, we need you. LRGHealthcare is committed to be-ing here for you and your loved ones, not just to-day or tomorrow,

“LRGHealthcare is a first-class facility that competes very well and stands up to any other healthcare facility in our state. Bank of New Hampshire is proud to support this capital campaign as LRGHealthcare is a jewel in our community, not only in regard to healthcare, but also in terms of being one of the largest economic drivers in the entire Lakes Region.”

Thank you for your generous support

CaPiTal CamPaigN

LRGHealthcare recently announced its Strengthening the Community’s Well-Being Capital Campaign. The goal of this campaign is to engage community members, through gifts large and small, to raise the necessary funds for these essential projects.

Renovations will include con-verting double patient rooms to private rooms with their own bathrooms and showers, sleep sofas, and state-of-the-art pa-tient lift systems. Private rooms allow patients the opportunity to sleep better, heal faster, and have private discussions with their family and health care providers.

In addition, renovations include updating medical imaging equipment and expanding the LRGH Emergency Department to accommo-date the growing needs of the community. Single patient rooms in the ED are crucial for infection control and privacy during what can be a very trying time for patients and their families. The days of a thin curtain separating patients are over.

We invite you to be a part of these exciting & important changes. Please support our mission by making a $35, $50, or $100 contribution today, or by pledging a larger gift over five years (gifts over $5,000 will be recognized on our donor walls at FRH & LRGH).

We are fortunate to live in a tight-knit community where residents and businesses alike always ‘step up to the plate’ to improve our most essential resources. At some point, we, or a loved one, will likely need medical care at LRGHealthcare, and isn’t it reassuring to know that we have access to the very best? Through your generosity we will come together to raise the necessary funds for these renovations, enabling us to provide the very best healthcare for years to come.

STrENgThENiNg ThE COmmuNiTy’S WEll-bEiNgImportant renovations are underway......changes that will have a very positive impact on care provided to you and your family for years to come.

According to the American Lung Associ-ation, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in men and women. A recent study by the National Cancer Institute Lung Cancer Screening Trials (NLST) and report-ed in the New England Journal of Medicine, showed that low-dose computed tomography (CT) screening holds promise of detecting lung cancers in symptomless, high-risk individuals and reduces their risk of death by 20 percent.

LRGHealthcare now offers this service at the Lakes Region General Hospital campus. “As with many types of cancer, early detection can lead to better outcomes,” said Leo God-du, Vice President of Ancillary Services. “We are committed to offering our community the latest technologies and advanced screening methods.”

The best prevention against lung cancer is never to start smoking, and if you are smoking, quit. If you live in an area where radon is present, have your home tested annually. Radon has been shown to increase your risk of developing lung cancer.

The American Lung Association recommends that cur-rent or former smokers, between the ages of 55 to 74, with a history of smoking a pack a day for 30 years, and with no history of lung cancer, should speak with their primary care provider about being screened.

for more information, or to learn more about this service, speak with your primary care provider.

nH Colorectal Cancer Screening ProgramLRGHealthcare has just completed our third year participation in a five year NH Colorectal Cancer Screening Program funded by a grant from the CDC. The grant offers screening colonoscopies to uninsured or un-

derinsured, low income patients at no cost to them.

To date, 178 patients referred by LRGHealthcare primary care providers have been eligible to receive a colonoscopy

through this program.

Colorectal cancer is the third most common type of cancer and kills over 50,000 people in the United States each year. But, over the past two decades the rate of colorectal cancer deaths has been dropping, thanks to the rise in screening colonoscopies. This procedure enables early detection and treatment of colorectal cancer, which does lead to better outcomes. Often, by removing polyps we can prevent colorectal cancer from developing at all.

If you are over the age of 50, and have not had a colonoscopy in the past ten years, speak with your

primary care provider about this program or visit www.lrgh.org.

october is Breast Cancer Awareness monthAfter skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among American women and the second leading cause of death in women. One in eight women will develop invasive breast cancer in their lifetime.

Cost should not be a barrier to any woman in our com-munity getting a mammogram. Medicare, Medicaid, and

most other insurance plans cover mammograms. The Breast & Cervical Cancer Screening Program (BCCP) provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings and diagnostic services

to low income, uninsured, & underinsured women between the ages of 18 - 64.
