trCLUB GOSSIP.NEWTOWN-The "Nearits" of past seasons-hope to be the "Its" of

1927.Without those who have, and with those who should, retire, and aided by

additional new blood, Newts should still provide, as in the past, some very anxiousmoments {or the skippers oi opposing sides.

Of allegedly old players, Jack Foskett, E. Phelan, H. Finch, A. Gtosterand others should stilt contrive to be a source of anlloyance to their opponents.

But say, Mr. Ed'it., while not claiming any certainties for inclusion in theCarnival Team, Nervts, sou-west men, Justice, Donald, and Ayres rvill certainlygive selectors food for thought.

In thcir opening game, popular \furray Lane received a very bad knock,\.[iller, rvho hails from our capital, also shorvs grcat promise.

At the unfurling of our Secorrd's 1926 Peunant, by President Tom Englishat the opening match last Saturdal', he said that he hoped he would have thepleasure of unfurling trvo Peunants for us in 7927, both ortr First and Seconds.First are determined not to disappoint him.

EASTtrRN SUBURBS.-Thosc supporters that u'ituessed last Saturday'sgame at Hampden u'dre cluitq pleased rvith thc display given by the Tri-colors,but they all hope that in the {uture Easts rvill rvin b1'a bigger margin, as manyof them suffer from heart failure. So Easts, it's up to you. Many old sup-porters were noticed barracking, aud, rvheu the Pennant was hoisted, gave threehearty cheers. Big -Iim rvauted to have tcn rounds a{ter the match. Sea breezesmust be good for Jirn. By the look of Jack's e1 e hel must have stopped spme-thing. It is good to see Obb1., Captain of the' Rcservcs. aud rve catr look forwardto see a big improvement on last season's tean'r. i-ittle advice, Obby: Keep

1'our boys, together on trainit.rg n:ghts, and the rcst rvill be easl'. I believe ourPress convinced Sydnel- supporters that Easts can play foota. No better sup-porter than H. G. Ir. 1-o.sl: the Social Cormrriitee.

IIORTH SH'ORli.-Lonclol elected' Captairr Vockler Vicc' ,Club hasbeslr fortunate in securing clearances for IVIcLean, Ballarat, arld Rookc, Devon-port. Both gavc a good s,horving on Saturday against Nervtorvt.t. N{issen, or.r

OUR GAME IN SYDNEY.

The League officials are more than pleased with results of last Saturday, both financially and the improved standard of play. The attendance at all gamesshorved a big improvement ol1 last year, and those that were fortunate inrvitnessing the match betrveen Sydney and Eastern Suburbs will not forget itfor. manl' a day. The standard of the play was much improved on last season, and this rvill continue so rvhile 'lve are receiving new players {rom other States, and our bol's are receiving some encouragement to train. The PremiershipPennant rvon b1' Eastern Suburbs was unfurled by the Mayor of Paddington,Ald. \I. O'Sullivan, and in a few well-chosen words he expressed the hope thatour game rvould become the most popular in Sydhey. (So say all of us)' Theoutstanding plal-ers rvere: (Sydney), Tottman, Loccke, Synot, Ferguson, andBilly \IcKo1'; ior the tri-colors: Wheeler, C. (stumpy)' Clarke, F. Davies, andF. Linney. Nervtorvn and Norths had a good go in until half-tirne at Erskine'-ville, and from the cornmencement of the third quarter Nervtown gained theupper hand. The outstanding players for Newts were Eric Justice, Doud Ayres(both from the South Western Districts), J. Sheehan, Gloster, and Horrie Finch.Norths' best men were N. Bagshaw (from Eastern Suburbs Reserve), Srveet,\lclean, and Rox Abel.

Western Sutrurbs and South Sydney had the honor of playing our gamefor the first time on the Sydney Sports Grour.rd, and Souths ran out wiunersby a small margin. Trhe best players for Souths' were Murphy, Hayes, Myers,F. Cawsey and Shannon. Wests fielded a good side, but their forwards weresomervhat out of practice.

The Junior League commence their competition for the under 17 years, boys, and by practice matches we should, have some interestilg football. Theteams enteied, a.re Paddington, Bondi, Erskinevlle and Nervtorvn. 1-hese games

will be played on the open parks, at Waverley, Moore Park and Jubilee Park.C. Crane, hon, secretary of the Junior League, rvishes to bring before the clutrsecretaries that nominations close for All Age Competition on Wednesday night, llth }fal-, at 8 p.m. Those players s'ho have Irot been chosen for First orReserve Grade should see to this at once.

This 1-ear ivill certainly be the best, so far as Austratian foothall is con-cerned. I have just received a letter from F. Arthur, Setretary of the TramwayFootball Association, stating that the tram troubs. have taken on the Aussiegame, and har-e already six teamso and will play on Wednesday mornings atHampden Oval and Erskineville. This is good nervs. Now, we won't be sur-prised if we hear the guard free-kick instead of fares, pleasc.

To Club Secretaries.-Kindly let me have short and spicy trervs.

Reply to Old Player.-Many thanks for your letter, and trust that same witlbe corrected in this issue.

S1'dney Supporter.-Very pleased with letter, but unfortunately the umpiresnere not ielectid until Thuisdhy night, and Artssiq Nete,s in pless, but rvill tryand have same r€ctified in future. Always pleased to hear of suggestions toimprove our gatnei 'f-.

SOUTH SYDNtrY.-We have started off this seasonn rvith a win that hasput great heart into our players and supporters alike. Last season Wests rve.reour stumlrling block, and were responsible for our elimination in the scmi-linats,but rve feel that things will be vastly different this ycar.

Orving to the tactics adopted by Wests of crowding the ball, the gamc rvasfar from open, and consequenttl' our nippy players were noti scen at thcir best, but, for all that, they gave glimpses of what may be expectedt of them later inthe season. F. Cawsey played a rvonderful game in goals, and was, largelyresponsible for our narrow win. Our great little forward, C. Stanford, wasone of the best players on the field, his wonderful judgment in the air enablinghim to bring off sonle spectacular marks.

SYDNEY.-S1'dney started the season in nerv colors, and they were a distinctimprovement on last season. The form displayed by both teams speaks well forfor the game this year, and we must congratulate Easts, on their hard-earnedvictory. Although dcfeated, the offrcials are very satisfied with the display, andrvith Skipper Frcd Blackeby available to-cla1-, great thir.rgs are expected. Avery rvise choicc rvas made in the skipper, to l'hom congratulations are extended.Others u'ho are expected to strengthen the tcam are Brorvtr, Parker and Higgins, arvaiting clearances; Gardeir and Bobhl' Pouers, rvho is stll injured. Oursympathy goes to this grand plaler, rvho received concussion in the trial gameagainst \\'ests. The earll' form of Ferguson, \[cKoy, Tottman, Kenrredy, andLoch is verl' pleasing, and we hope to be ablc to mention a ferv more next week.Tlaining is held at Jubilee Oval. Glebe Point, ou l'uesday ancl Thursclay nights, and as the selcctors are going to prck the teanrs on form-uot rcputations-thcregular attendance of players is, requestcd.

The reservd gradc plai, crs failcd to attend last Saturday, and difficulty wasexperienced irr fielding a full team. This is indeed very disappointing, consideringthe targe number available, and l'e do not rvish {or a repctition. The selectorshave several players noted for higher grade, so uow is yottr chance to makc good.

WEST'S NOTES.-T'he Magpies have a lot of promising young playersthis season, altd expect to be close up in the premiership. \\tests rvere unfortn-nate in be.ng rvithout the services of Clcm I-arkey, liranl<lin, Whittaker, andRichard5 last Saturday against Souths, but the young talent put up a splendidgame. Jim Starke was a bit upset last Saturday, and did not play up to his usualform. Jim rvas in such a hurry to get to the Sports Ground that a John I'Ioppulled him up for fracturing the speed regulations or1 his motor cycle. Jimsrvears that he rvas only doing 12 miles per hour. Harrl' Lancaster is in hiselement norv as captain of the Reserve Grade, an<tr if they lvin thc premiership,Harry will be a very pleased man. lVests are rolling up well at tr'farrickvilleOval everl* Wednesday night, but rve still have a ferv l:acksliders.
