with the choir over thepast year.Richard Eaton sharedlater that her ministry is
music, enthusiasm, and
caring for those individu-als that drop in just tosing on a Tuesday eve-ning. I believe it givesthem a special meaningfor the day.We all thank you,Marilyn!
On May 22, 2011, theBridges New DayChoir, directed by ourown Marilyn Bennett, joined with the Lafayette
Park UMC ChancelChoir to celebrate andpraise God through song. Each choir performedselections individually aswell as together, andKourtney Strade per-formed a solo selection.
Several guests from Ef-fingham, IL joined theaudience to hear thebeautiful music, alongwith Marilyn and Bobs
son and grandchildren.Pastor Kathleen pre-sented Marilyn withflowers in appreciationof her faithful service
I was raised in a faithtradition that did not ob-serve the full Christiancalendar yearwe cele-
brated Christmas andEaster, period.
As a Methodist, I havefound richness in my
spiritual journey bymarking the differentseasons of the year, Ad-vent, Christmas, Lent,Easter, Pentecost, andKingdom time.
I am sure when I wasyounger, I must have
heard the word Pente-cost, and probably myunderstanding of Pente-cost was based on hear-ing about our brothersand sisters of the Pente-costal Church fellow-ship.(Continued. on page 11)

His full-time ministry beganin 2003 with the release ofhis first religious CD/albumcalled, "Everything I Am,"followed by the 2005 CDrelease, "Changed." To
keep up with full timetravel, Shawn sold most
everything he had andmoved into a 35ft RV/

work of worshipping God and car-
ing for the community. Leviticus
27:30 says, Every tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of
the fruit of the trees, is the Lords; it
is holy to the Lord. In 2 Chroni-
cles 31:5 it says, As soon as the
command was spread abroad, the
people of Israel gave in abundance
the first fruits of grain, wine, oil,
honey, and of all the produce of the
field. And they brought in abun-
dantly the tithe of everything.
In January of 2005, Lafayette Parkmade a commitment to become a
tithing church. We promised that
10% of what we received would be
given to ministry opportunities be-
yond our local church. I must admit
it took us awhile to really live into
that promise. However, last year we
were able to fully live out our com-
mitment and it enabled us to honor
our mission giving commitments
and to do some amazing life savingwork around the world.
General budget gifts as well as des-
ignated donations to special causes
such as Loaves and Fishes, Youth
Ministry, Matthews Brown
Bags, etc. are also tithed upon.
However, the designated amounts
go directly to the specific item ac-count, and are used for the purposes
for which they are intended. In this
way, we can provide caring ministry
to those in our community while
still honoring our commitment to
tithe.
As your Church Mouse, I have
watched the people of Lafayette
Park over the years and I am really
impressed with how
you make a differ-ence through your
commitment to tith-
ing. I know you
help provide medi-
cal help to develop-
ing countries, care
for AIDS orphans,
and help people get
an education so that
they can have a
healthy life. I amproud of you Lafay-
ette Park for growing into being a
tithing congregation.
Fondly, Church Mouse

What is this thing about tithing?
Sincerely, Mr. Dollar
Dear Mr. Dollar,
I am so glad that you asked. Tithing
is a spiritual, biblical, and financial
principle. The concept of tithing
began when God had the people of
Israel create the Tabernacle. It was
a way of acknowledging that every-
thing we have comes from God, and
it enabled the tribe of Levi who con-
stantly served at the Tabernacle a
way to live. The people of Israel
realized that everything they had
came from God and so it was an
honor and joy to give 10 percent of
their blessings back to God for the

The fol-lowing quote is from Odemagazine, Spring 2011. Thearticle was entitled A NewKind of Personal Wealth byAdam Smith.
Research published in Pro-ceedings of the NationalAcademy of Sciences foundthat while earning more maylead us to think that we have
better lives, any income be-yond $75,000 does nothingto boost our day-to-daymoods. A separate globalstudy based on Gallup datacollected in some 100 coun-tries came to a similar con-clusion.
Higher income leads tohigher aspirations, expecta-tions centered on things in-stead of building community
and relationships. Unful-filled expectations bringfrustration.
Smith proposes that experi-ential spending, or mindfulconsumption, brings morehappiness than traditionalspending not related to anexperience (e.g., relational, educational, challenging, cultural, giving/volunteering,etc.). For example, mindfulconsumption could be pick-
ing your own vegetablesfrom a community farm in-stead of a grocery store, orlearning a new language.
This article reminded me ofhow many times I have ob-served mindful consumptionaround the churcheithersponsored or by individuals.
You've seen them too: mos-quito nets, school kits forchildren, mentoring a child, the McKinley peace garden, serving meals at ShalomHouse, maintaining thechurch grounds and building,
building homes in Juarez, preparing the church forservices, and other things toonumerous to name. Serving
brings happiness in a waythat can't be com-
pared to spending
money on a newflat screen TV!
What a blessingthat what we knowthrough scripturesis being discussedaround the world.Among otherthings, God tellsus about lovingour neighbor asourselves; aboutsharing the good
news of Christ;and about not wor-rying about mate-rial things buttrusting that God will pro-vide.
It will be even more of ablessing when one day theresearchers observe howmuch happier people trulyliving for God are regardlessof incomewe have peace,
joy, love, hope, provision,
healing, mercy, salvation, apersonal relationship withour Creator, (and I could goon...).
Lets continue to considerGods blessings with a grate-ful heart and the world willsee Gods love in us.

On May 1, participants inthe Lent book study (Changethe World) met to give feed-
back and explore ideas for
the future. Both LPUMCand Centenary UMC partici-
pated.
All in attendance enjoyedmeeting in small groups;and appreciated the varietyof times/locations availableas well as the opportunity toshare with members from
both congregations.
Looking forward it was sug-gested that we offer in the
fall Adventures in Faith withdifferent topics, but duringthe next Lenten season againoffer a book study for every-one from both churches.
Another suggestion was towork with existing groupsfocused on a particular causeto function also as a small
group. Small groups canoffer spiritual growth, prayerand support for each other inour journey.
During the discussion, fivethemes surfaced, and weredistilled into three priorities
by those present:
Local mission (1)
Faith development (2)
Nurture and care ofcongregations (3)
International mission
Social entrepreneurship
These themesneed to befurther ex-
plored by all
of us in thenext few yearsto see whatactivities andoutreach mightresult.
The concept of bringingHeaven to Earth from the
book was an important con-cept so that we are not just
believers but disciples. Ad-ditionally, ideas were dis-cussed about how we could
bring church to people suchas through house churchesand performing a needs as-sessment in our communi-ties.
L E N T E N S T U D Y M E E T I N G

Other comments werethat meeting in homesallowed more fellow-ship time, and we sup-
port continued offeringof small groups to pro-vide structure and ac-countability in our spiri-
tual lives. Participantsalso liked having the
book study conceptsbrought into weeklysermons.
