01OVERVIEW OF THE LEGAL PRACTICE ACT AND KEY CHANGES

The ever-evolving legal profession in South Africa has, over the years, been regulated by various laws, rules, customs and practices. This module will explore the essential objectives that the Legal Practice Act aims to achieve.

02LEGAL PRACTICE GOVERNANCE STRUCTURE

The governance framework regulating the legal profession in South Africa has been signifi cantly amended by the Legal Practice Act. Where previously attorneys were regulated by the Law Society of South Africa and each of the relevant provincial law societies, and advocates by the various bar associations, the Legal Practice Act has established a single regulatory body, namely the Legal Practice Council of South Africa (the “Legal Practice Council”), to govern the entire legal profession.

03REGULATION OF LEGAL PRACTITIONERS AND RENDERING OF LEGAL SERVICES

On completion of this module, you should be able to understand the aspects of the Legal Practice Act governing the regulation of legal practitioners and candidate legal practitioners. A person may only practise as a legal practitioner if he or she is admitted and enrolled to practise as such in terms of the Legal Practice Act and must consequently meet the requirements set by the Act.

04PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT AND DISCIPLINARY BODIES

On completion of this module, you should be able to understand the provisions of the Legal Practice Act pertaining to standards of conduct and behaviour for legal practitioners and candidate legal practitioners, discipline and disciplinary bodies, with specifi c emphasis on the objectives.

On completion of this module, you should be able to understand the provisions of the Legal Practice Act pertaining to standards of conduct and behaviour for legal practitioners and candidate legal practitioners, discipline and disciplinary bodies.
