From Secretary’s Desk…
I am very happy to know that the Loyola College
Magazine will be brought out showing all the activities of
the academic year 2018-19. It‟s a joy know that Sports
day, parent teachers meet, Seminars, Conferences, Guest
Lectures, Metalitz (Interdepartmental cultural
Competitions), Gloria (Interdenominational Carol
Competitions) and women‟s day celebration have been conducted efficiently in the College and
contributed to the holistic development of the students. Some of the Departments have participated in the
intercollegiate competitions conducted by other Colleges and got the prizes and certificates thus bringing
laurels to our College. The First Graduation Day was a splendid event. The Science Exhibition for nearby
School Students and the Environment Awareness Programme for the Government School Teacher were
well organized in collaboration with the Tamilnadu Science and Technology. Many School students and
Teachers benefitted a lot from these programmes. In short, the 2018-19 academic year was a successful
and fulfilling year. I congratulate the Staff and Students for their achievements. May God continue to
bless our College! Let the light of Loyola shine not only in our area but also in our State.

organising different academic programmes, magazines, competitions etc.
I know that LCM does not believe in imparting knowledge merely as “information” but
insists on going value-based education, which the world needs today, with a fine blending of
Indian tradition and modernity, the value-based education which impetus on sound character
building so as to become men and women with and for others in a fast changing society.

Vice Principal’s Message…
Loyola College - Mettala, one of two hundred
plus colleges and universities worldwide, in the
Jesuit tradition of academic excellence and
service to others, educates the whole person:
caring for the mind, body and spirit of each
student. With a primary focus on giving students
the best Jesuit education, we infuse Jesuit
principles into both the curriculum and the lives
of students.
The heart of a Jesuit education lies in learning to discern God's will in our lives, and applying
that knowledge to all we are and do (Jesuits‟ first Universal Apostolic Preference). We provide
opportunities for on-going development of their imagination, conscience and intellect, and
encourage and help them recognize new experiences as opportunities for further growth. We
want them to see service to others as more self-fulfilling than just success or prosperity. It means
in short, that a good life is an other-directed life.
In educational terms, the goal of a Jesuit education is the education of men and women for
others, men and women who are agents for change. We‟re forming leaders for a more just world.
This is what sets Loyola apart from other institutions- a degree with a difference! Annual
magazine of ours will speak volumes of our efforts in the wholesome formation of students.
God bless our collective efforts!
Rev.Fr.Sebastin Thangadurai SJ
Vice Principal & Hostel Director.

Welcome
Honourable Chief Guest Thiru. U.Sagayam, I.A.S.,
Vice-Chairman, Science City, Chennai, Tamilnadu, Rev. Dr.
Boniface Jeyaraj S.J., Superior and Secretary, Loyola
College-Mettala, Rev. Fr. Lawrence Benadict S.J., Vice-
Principal Administration, Rev. Fr. Sebastin Thangadurai
S.J., Vice-Principal Academics‟, Reverend Fathers and
Sisters from various parishes and religious congregations, Dean
of Students Affairs & Dean for Women students, IQAC Co-ordinator, Heads of the Department,
Members of the Faculty, Officials, Non-Teaching Staff, Alumni, Respected Parents, Benefactors,
Well Wishers, Members of the Press, Beloved Students, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and
Gentlemen I warmly welcome you all.
Our Chief Guest today, Thiru. U. Sagayam whose office door bears a sign reading "Reject
bribes, hold your head high" (in Tamil, Lanjam Thavirtthu, Nenjam Nimirtthu). This motto of
him has repeatedly antagonized influential politicians and their supporters in Tamil Nadu. His
effort to eliminate corruption has deliberatively pushed him to be transferred for 25 times in the
first 27 years of his career. His humanistic perspective has also won him a reputation among the
people; in the words of a Daily News and Analysis correspondent, "The common man's collector
has become the hero of the local folklore. "In the past, at the time of assembly election 2013, all
collectors were transferred except Mr. U. Sahayam I.A.S. and V. Palani Kumar, I.A.S. that
shows his authenticity and integrity. He wins the hearts of many men and women by his simple
life style. He goes out of his way to help people whenever we approach him. Thereby his notions
created many people to adhere him for many inspiring speeches at various occasions for the
youth. Though many colleges wanted him to visit their institutions, it‟s our most honourable
moment to have amongst these heavy calls. A special note to be mentioned, to all quite know
7
that he is a Jesuit Alumni of Loyola - Chennai. Loyola - Mettala stands tall and proud to have
him in our midst.
This day is a special day for all of us. We rejoice in the success that we have achieved,
and we wish to correct the short comings of the past and try to fare better in the future. Today we
look forward with sense of hope towards greater growth and progress. We are proud to
acknowledge that we had good results, achievements in academics, research, co-curricular and
extra-curricular activities of this year.
“In Jesuit education, particular care is given to the development of the imaginative, the
affective and the creative dimensions of each student in all courses of study. These dimensions
enrich learning and prevent it from being merely intellectual.”
(Jesuit General Council doc.)

LOYOLA HOSTELS
It is a belief that education should make individuals feel responsible for their society and be
committed in making this world a better place for everyone especially the poor and the
oppressed. For this, we, in hostels, earnestly continue to strive and mould students as creative,
