MALELANE GOLF CLUB

THE NOMADS CREED

“No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main;

Any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind;

And therefore, never send to know for whom the bell tolls;

It tolls for thee.”

from the Meditations of John Donne (1573-1631)

OCTOBER 2019

It feels such a long time ago, since our game at Malelane! FIVE weeks will have gone by since the 8th of September, before our next game at White River and I am sure several handicap indexes changed during this time, especially with the new rules applicable from 1st October. (See article

on pages 24 and 25)

Thank you to the Malelane Golf Club which hosted us superbly. The course was great given the dry weather we are experiencing at this time of the year and the facilities were as good as we have come to expect. On your next off-weekend, try and plan a trip to Malelane Golf Club – they

need and are deserving of our support!

Well done to Marcus Mdluli, Chalmers Pagiwa and Ronald Ncube who represented South Africa and the Lowveld at the 19th Botswana Nationals, from 12 to 14 September at the Gaborone Golf Club. I am sure you enjoyed the weekend and thank you for taking the time to tour a foreign

destination and play golf as well!

I had to plan our family beach vacation around the 124th National Management meeting, coinciding with the Southern Natal 35th Anniversary. It was a great get-away weekend where everyone from NATEX, all the Captains, Vice Captains and some Junior-Vice Captains from the twelve South African Clubs met to discuss the state of Nomads in general and vote on several changes to the Constitution and Rules-of-Play. Watch this space for some interesting Handicap

changes, effective from 1st January 2020.

Thanks to Johan “Oogies” van Rensburg, who joined me at the National Management meeting and Puso Maloka, who enjoyed the weekend in the company of past-Lowveld Nomad, Thulani Ntobela,

who transferred to Southern Natal in 2018.

This month our newsletter is a bit shorter, as sadly we have to say goodbye to the “Changeroom Chatterbox” for now. Thank you, Ian Kirby, for the 4 or more years of providing us with a comic

insight into the affairs of our club and its members, on-and-off the pitch so to say!

We are all looking forward to the 7th Swaziland Nationals on the 18th to 20th October. I would like to wish the local team good luck, and hope to see more Lowvelders on the podium! We also can’t wait for the Buffalo 2020 National tournament at East London Golf Club. The deadline for entries is 31 October, so please contact Past Captain Luigi Colmanet urgently if you are interested or simply need more information. Any full playing member can enter - so don’t hesitate! (more

detail on Page 5 of this issue)

Until Sunday at White River, take it easy and stay safe!

A big and very sincere thank you to Lowveld Nomad Ian Kirby for starting and continuing with this excellent column for some years … but he has decided to ‘down tools’ for now sadly, due to work

pressure.

Is there someone else “out there” who’d like to put pen to paper

and produce something similar or even completely different.

Please make contact with Captain Arthur Douglass

to have a chat and make some plans.

SEPTEMBER’S Betting was slow and amount of R1330

was wagered. Pay-outs amounted to R750 so the

Bookie made a profit of R580 which was used to

create a float of R300 and cover the Bookie’s

personal losses from the previous game so an amount

of only R90 was added to the Andrew Mentis Fund.

Currently R4510 has been transferred to the AMF and

the Bookie’s float stands at R300. Please support this

initiative as it is a fun way of raising money for AMEF

and you can also walk away with a nice sum of money

if you get lucky.

Dear Fellow Nomads -

WE NEED YOUR HELP AND YOUR COMMITMENT

The time has come to gather volunteers to assist at the Alfred Dunhill Championship at Leopard

Creek this year. The tournament will take place on 27th November - 1st December

2019 and will be set out as follows:

27th November Wednesday : Par 3 tournament - THIS HAS BEEN CANCELLED

28th November Thursday : Main tournament starts

29th November Friday : The cut

30th November Saturday : Moving day

01st December Sunday : Completion

We are now only six weeks away and we are way short on numbers so we need 40 volunteers

daily from Thursday to Sunday

Accommodation has been reserved at the Boulders Safari Lodge (Old Tandanani) just outside

Malelane for volunteers.

Ideally, we require volunteers to work 4 days (Thursday to Sunday), but we know this is not always possible. So even if you could only work 1 or 2 days we would really appreciate your

assistance and commitment.

Please have a look at your diaries NOW and if you confidently feel that you would be available

then please let me know. Kindly send your response to my

email address as follows [email protected]

Thank you in anticipation of your involvement

and support

CLUB HANDICAP CHANGES COMING INTO EFFECT

ON 1 OCTOBER 2019

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING CAREFULLY

AND BE AWARE OF CHANGES WHICH

CAME INTO EFFECT THIS MONTH!

1. AVERAGE OF THE BEST 8 OF THE LAST 20 SCORE DIFFERENTIALS Your Handicap Index calculation will be based on the average of your best 8 Score Differentials from your last 20 scores, with no further adjustment. All Handicap Indexes will be recalculated overnight on the 30th September 2019. The impact will be different for each golfer, so your Handicap Index on 1 October 2019 might be slightly higher or lower than your current Handicap Index, due to the combination of the average of the best

8 of the last 20 scores and the dropping of the 0.96 multiplier.

2. MAXIMUM SCORE ALLOWED ON A HOLE CHANGES TO NET DOUBLE BOGEY When entering your score for Handicap purposes, the maximum score allowed, and what you have to record for

a hole where you ‘ring out’, is a Net Double Bogey

(Net Two Over Par or Zero Stableford Points - as shown in the Table below).

3. 9-HOLE COURSE HANDICAP When playing nine holes, you must use your 9-hole Course Handicap based on the nine holes you elect to play.

This 9-hole Course Handicap can be looked up on a chart at the club or on the HNA App.

4. 9-HOLE SCORES AND INCOMPLETE ROUNDS. If you have played between 9 holes and 13 holes, you must enter a 9-hole score. If you have played 14 holes or more, you must enter your Adjusted Gross Score for the holes played and add par plus any Handicap Strokes you are entitled to for the remaining unplayed holes, based on your Course Handicap. Enter this Adjusted Gross

Score as an 18-hole score.

The 9-hole calculation will automatically be completed by the system by taking your Gross Score for the 9 holes you played, adding par for the second nine, plus your handicap strokes for these 9 holes, plus 1 additional

stroke. This Gross Score will then be used to calculate a differential in the same way as an 18-hole score.

5. HOLES NOT COMPLETED - MOST LIKELY SCORE Where possible, players should always putt out and complete the hole. If, however, you do not finish a hole and you are on the green and within 1.5 metres of the hole, record 1 extra shot. If you are between 1.5 metres and 20 metres from the hole, record 2 or 3 strokes, depending on the difficulty of the green and the players ability. If you are more than 20 metres, then add 3 or 4 strokes, depending on the difficulty of the green and the

player’s ability.

6. 24 HOURS TO ENTER A SCORE BEFORE RECEIVING A PENALTY The time frame for entering a score before incurring a penalty has been reduced from 72 hours to 24 hours. Failure to enter a score within 24 hours (from 23h00 on the day of the round) will result in a penalty and the

late score entered will be adjusted to the lowest differential in the player’s last 20.

7. GOLFERS ARE REQUIRED TO ENSURE A ROUND IS REGISTERED/OPENED BEFORE PLAYING AND ENTERING

A SCORE. Golfers need to ensure a round is opened/registered on the system before they play. The clubs are encouraged

to open all rounds (including those for affiliated visitors) on the club systems or terminals. If however, the club does not open the round prior to play, the golfer must open a round on his her HNA phone app or on the Handicap Terminal before play. (This option will be available on the App and Terminal from

October 1).

A score may not be entered without opening a round. Any score entered for which the round was opened only after completion of the round will be flagged in the system for possible investigation by your Club Handicap Committee. All valid rounds (see section 5.6 of the GolfRSA Rules for invalid rounds), played with a marker and

under the Rules of Golf, must be entered on the system. This now includes all Match Play Scores.

8. THE EXCEPTIONAL SCORE WILL BE CHANGED TO: If a player’s score differential is 7 to 9.0 shots below their Handicap Index, their Handicap Index will be

reduced by 1 shot. If a player’s score differential is 10 or more shots below their Handicap Index, their Handicap Index will be

reduced by 2 shots.

9. THE MAXIMUM HANDICAP INDEX WILL CHANGE TO 54 FOR MEN AND WOMEN

WORLD HANDICAP SYSTEM FINAL CHANGES:

The final changes to be made with the adoption of the World Handicap System on 1 January 2020 will be communicated to golfers in detail in the next few months. Importantly, these final changes are all system-

related, so they will be applied by the HNA system after the golfer has entered his/her score.

They include a Playing Conditions Calculation that adjusts the Course Rating when adverse weather or course setup conditions affected the day’s scores, as well as a cap on the amount a handicap can increase in a rolling

12-month period.

Thank you for the positive way you have accepted and adopted the recent changes. With these latest changes, and the adoption of the World Handicap System by South Africa and the majority of the

countries in the world, your Handicap Index will be

recognised and accepted worldwide on the 1st January 2020.
