WelcomeWelcome to the real Florida Keys.
This is a world of beautiful contrasts,
where diminutive Key deer, expansive
coral reefs and spectacular sunsets coexist.
That’s just a sample of what awaits you
in the Lower Keys.
Traveling south
from the mainland,
picturesque Little Duck
Key at MM 40 is the first
of our emerald islands to
come into view. Continuing along
the stunning Overseas Highway, you
reach Ohio and Bahia Honda Keys, home to one of
Florida’s most pristine and award-winning state parks.
After you pass by
Bahia Honda State
Park, you reach the
Lower Keys’ residential
and commercial heart,
Big Pine Key, located
at MM 29.5 - 33.
Quaint galleries, stores
and restaurants, from casual seafood eateries to fine
dining establishments, await. Grab snorkel gear or dive
equipment for a trip to Looe Key Sanctuary Preservation
Area, or plan a kayak adventure into the backcountry with
the help of a local outfitter. Before leaving the island, note
the site of a world-renowned marine science educational
facility known as Seacamp and Newfound Harbor Marine
Institute at the southeastern tip of Big Pine Key.
5
A few miles down the road, past the cozy residential areas
in Little Torch and Ramrod Keys, is Summerland Key. Mote
Marine Laboratory, a world-class marine science educational
and research organization, operates a facility on this island.
Home to fish-rich waters and a fleet of charter boats, “the big
one” is rarely the one that gets away here.
Cudjoe Key is another charming residential island while
Sugarloaf Key, MM 16 - 20, is home to a casual family resort
and the Bat Tower, a historical site chronicling a creative,
if failed, attempt at pest control. Largely undeveloped
Saddlebunch Key retains its rugged natural beauty and offers
a lovely scenic drive along the remnants of the Overseas
Railroad. In Big Coppitt, you’ll find a laid-back residential area
with a number of rental homes and plenty of amenities to
meet your vacation needs.
Military pilots train at the U.S. Naval Air Facility on Boca
Chica Key, while Stock Island’s campgrounds and deepwater
marinas signal the end of your journey through the Lower
Keys. Whether it’s relaxation or adventure you seek, you’re
sure to find it in Florida’s Lower Keys.

Natural
As the least people-populated island chain,
the majority of the Lower Keys’ population has
four legs, fi ns or feathers. No visit would be
complete without encountering some native wildlife.
The National Key Deer Refuge covers nearly 9,200
acres on Big Pine and No Name Keys. Key deer are
a diminutive, endangered species that stand only
26 to 32 inches high at the shoulder and weigh a
“whopping” 90 pounds. Feeding or instigating them
is illegal.
Nature lovers will fi nd a variety of activities within
the refuge. Blue Hole, an abandoned limestone quarry
from railroad days, is the largest body of freshwater
in the Keys and home to fi sh, turtles and alligators. An
observation platform affords the opportunity to view
native wildlife up close.
Just north of Blue Hole are the 2/3-mile Jack C.
Watson Trail and the 800-foot handicapped-accessible
Fred Manillo Wildlife Trail, the latter of which leads to an
observation platform overlooking freshwater wetland.
Both trails are ideal for spotting Key deer.
The Great White Heron National Refuge
encompasses a 174-square-mile area between
Key West and Marathon. It is also a mecca for birders,
as there are more than 180 avian species within.
A monument to another fl ying creature can be
found near Sugarloaf Airport. Entrepreneur Richter
attractions
It’s no secret that most things just
come naturally in Big Pine Key
and the Lower Keys.

Perky erected the Bat Tower as part of a chemical-
free plan to rid mosquitoes from his property.
Unfortunately, the bats fl ew off and Mr. Perky
passed away before he could carry out his innovative
strategy. Today, the tower stands as a monument to
one man’s failed attempt at controlling nature.
More untamed natural beauty
can be found at Bahia Honda State
Park. The beach here is said to be
the most beautiful in the Keys and
because of its adjacent deepwater
channel, activities tend to be
centered on the water, including
swimming and snorkeling.

The stunning reefs and intriguing
wrecks of the Lower Florida Keys
are the underwater equivalent
of Paris’ most beautiful gardens. Life
springs from all directions in this aquatic
playground, and whether you prefer to
fl oat lazily across the surface or descend
to the sea fl oor, chances are the ideal
trip awaits you.
The Looe Key Reef, part of the
Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary,
is widely regarded as one of the most
spectacular reefs in the Florida Keys.
Named after the H.M.S. Looe, which
sank in 1744, the sanctuary varies in depth from less than
10 feet to more than 100 feet, making it an ideal snorkeling

and diving site for beginners and experts alike. Looe Key
boasts an impressive array of large star and brain coral, as well
as colorful parrotfi sh, barracuda, loggerhead turtles and even
the occasional Caribbean reef shark.
To the west of Looe Key lies the wreck of the Adolphus
Busch, Sr., which sank in 110 feet of water in 1998. Despite its
recent arrival, the artifi cial reef already bursts with marine life.
An oft-seen 350-pound
goliath grouper counts
itself as one of the
wreck’s fi rst tenants,
and diving afi cionados
say life is developing at
an astonishing rate.
Numerous reputable
dive shops offer snorkel
and scuba trips for all
skill levels. For more
information, contact
one of the dive shops
listed in our Recreation
Guide on page 18.

Key to Fishing
Surrounded on all sides by
water, the Lower Keys are a
haven for fi shermen. Anglers looking to test their
skills offshore will fi nd the deep blue waters of the Gulf
Stream fi lled with marlin, sailfi sh, tuna, wahoo and other
ferocious fi ghters waiting to take the bait. Trolling along
the reef will yield yellowtail, snapper and grouper.
Tranquil Florida Bay, known to the locals as the
“backcountry,” is the territory of redfi sh, trout and the
elusive bonefi sh, better known here as “grey ghosts.”
The biggest challenge in these shallow waters is hooking
the mighty tarpon, which can weigh up to 200 pounds.
It’s just one of many treasures to be caught in this slice
of paradise.
There are nearly as many fi shing options in the Keys as
there are varieties of fi sh. Charter a boat with a licensed
guide to take you offshore or into the backcountry. Party
boats are a fun way to get the family out on the water.
While bridge fi shing, you can catch dinner and create
memories; there are nine fi shing bridges in the Lower Keys.
Bait, tackle and a license should be included in your
charter, as well as information on legal limits for “keepers.”
Pack refreshments, and wear a hat, sunglasses
and sunscreen.
