low carbon legislationPart L dictates the allowable levels of carbon emission for various building types and also outlines the measurement calculation to determine carbon emission levels, this is called SAP (Standard Assessment Procedure). The SAP takes into consideration factors such as the construction techniques used in a new building, and the efficiency of the key building products used for heating, ventilation etc.

Such legislation has clearly driven significant demand for technology within HVAC products. In many instances the legislation will only allow for products based on the energy criteria specified. In addition, legislation is recognising more and more products that can demonstrate a clear energy benefit over other forms of technology via independent testing with carbon allowances available when choosing these products.

In the UK the Residential Ventilation Industry has established an independent testing authority for energy efficient products such as central extract systems with or without heat recovery. The process is called ‘SAP Appendix Q’.

The torin-Sifan low carbon motorised Impeller product range has evolved significantly over the last decade.

The most significant reason for this evolution has been the demand for solutions created by both European and country specific energy reduction legislation. The Energy Performance in Buildings Directive (EPBD), which relates to the Residential & Commercial construction industry, has been instrumental in setting out the energy saving objectives for Europe together with guidelines to be used to measure energy reduction.

The criteria established by the (EPBD) has been translated into country specific legislation

and regulations. A good example of this is within

the UK. The UK now controls the energy consumption of new buildings through a building regulation called

Part L.

5

This process allows residential ventilation products to be independently tested against fixed test methodologies, this determines their energy efficiency, normally in the form of specific fan power (w/l/s) and heat exchanger efficiency where heat recovery

is used. When the products specific fan power is proven to be better than the standard figures included in the calculation tool, these products are listed on the SAP Q database which is used by construction companies to choose products that will help them meet legislation. The construction company can use the improved specific fan powers in their calculation model and this allows the construction company to better meet the overall carbon emission allowance they have for their new building.

Lowest specific fan powers (SFP) are achievable through the use of low carbon motors.

torin-Sifan supplies the motorised Impellers used within the most efficient central extract system using heat recovery currently listed on ‘SAP Appendix Q’ with specific fan powers down as low as 0.37w/l/s offering best in class performance.

torin-Sifan can also demonstrate SFP improvements of up to 30% when tested comparatively against other motorised impeller manufacturers, when using our latest generation low carbon platform.

low carbon technologylow carbon motors have grown in popularity enormously over the past five years in many areas of Europe. This is due primarily to the significant energy reduction legislation that has been introduced and the demands this has placed on the product development plans of manufacturers.

As a result, it is very clear to see why motors have become the logical choice for manufacturers as they seek to develop products with best in class energy performance for their customers.

Firstly, motors are approximately 30% more efficient than their AC counterparts due to the different methods they employ to generate torque. An AC motor creates torque by means of inducing current through copper windings or aluminium bars, a process that consumes energy. However an motor uses permanent magnets to create an interactive magnetic field. The generation of this interactive magnetic field in an motor by permanent magnets does not consume energy.

In addition, the 30% motor efficiency benefit can be significantly enhanced by the incorporation

of a full electronics package, either on-board or separate to the motor. This offers the flexibility of infinitely variable speed control and the ability for the electronics to convert mains voltage to DC supply at a DC level optimal for efficient motor operation. All of this is self contained within the motor electronics.

In an motor, commutation is achieved by the motor’s electronic circuitry. This provides exactly the required current, at exactly the right time, for precise control of the motor throughout its speed range. The same electronics can also self generate a 10V output to allow control of the motor via a potentiometer. In addition the same electronics is capable of receiving inputs (PWM/ 0-10V) from external sources. This allows for the precise control of various conditions such as humidity, CO2, temperature, pressure etc. In any given situation, the fan can be made to move the exact amount of air required at a given point in time, through speed regulation.

Page 7: low carbon motorised impellers - Torin- · PDF fileSAP takes into consideration factors such as the ... ISO1940 G63 as standard. This type of fan is used extensively, within extract

7

The use of speed control has a significant affect in reducing energy consumption. Reducing the speed of an motor by 50% can reduce its power consumption by a factor of 8 in an air moving application. Running a fan faster than required is therefore very wasteful.

Furthermore, AC Fans have a peak efficiency at a single point on their operating curve, with efficiency varying substantially either side of this point. motors on the other hand have an efficiency that can be made to vary very little across the full speed profile of the fan.

It is also worthy of note that motors operate at very low noise levels under speed control and do not generate the characteristic whining noises associated with AC motors when speed controlled.

Combining the efficiency of the Motor and the efficiency available from speed control can therefore result in up to 75% overall efficiency gains for motors when compared to their AC equivalents.

• Efficiency - Up to 75% more efficient than a traditional AC motor

• Control - Infinite speed control by 0-10Vdc or PWM without loss of efficiency.

• Intelligence - Programmable for constant speed and constant volume.

• Low Noise - For quiet operation.

• Low specific fan power - for best in class performance

low carbon motorised impellersApart from the efficiency of the motor used in these products, their built in intelligence and inherent controllability gives the designer considerable scope when designing product.

customised solutions availablePlease discuss any customisation of these products that you may desire as, in many instances, this can be accommodated very easily.

descriptiontorin-sifan low carbon motorised impellers are powered by intelligent, controllable and highly efficient

motors that can be supplied with either separate or integrated drive electronics.

The range of impeller diameters available as standard include 140mm – 200mm (forward curved) and 133mm – 280mm (backward curved).

Custom designed impellers can de developed with our customers to optimise features that are important in a given application. Each motor is normally tuned to suit the exact needs of the application with regards to power input. However our standard motors have a 75W winding.

The motor is Class B insulated and has maintenance free ball bearings.

All motorised impellers are dynamically balanced to

ISO1940 G63 as standard.

This type of fan is used extensively, within extract ventilation systems and supply/ extract systems that incorporate heat recovery cells.

The products in this brochure are examples of what is possible. Our range is very large, so

please speak to us about your specific needs.
