Loving God Loving People Growing Together Moving Forward
As I sit here to write this article, the high for the day is projected to be well into the nineties and
weekend temperatures could approach one hundred degrees. It’s hot outside, which means
summer is here. School is about to be over for another school year and both students and
teachers are celebrating. Family vacations and Independence Day celebrations are being
planned. Summertime is a special time indeed.
Summertime also gives us unique opportunities to live our faith and put our faith into action.
There are two opportunities in the life of our church family which I want to highlight for you.
The first is Vacation Bible School. At VBS we have an opportunity like no other to impact the
lives of young children with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Each year we get to love on and
encourage approximately fifty children age 2 through grade 5. This is great place to put your
faith in action whether you lead one of stations, guide an age group through the stations, help
with supper or serve in some other way. If you would like to know more about VBS contact
our gifted coordinator, Emily Chaffin.
The second opportunity to put your faith in action over the summer which I want to highlight
for you is our praying through the Book of Acts using the book, Acts 29:Fifty Days to Invite the
Holy Spirit, by Dr. Terry Teykl. There has been a little bit of confusion over exactly how we are
doing this, so let me clarify. Everyone who participates will purchase a book, and do the daily
reading and praying on your own. There will not be a mid-week component time of focused
prayer. I will be preaching from the Book of Acts thematically with what we are reading and
praying during the this fifty days of prayer. I am hoping and praying for at least fifty people to
sign up and join in prayer for our church family during this fifty days. Please feel free to
contact me with any questions you may have about this time of focused prayer for our church
family.
Looking Forward,
Brother Michael

News from the Missions & Christian Education Director By Ty LaValley
Methodist Community Center at Rincon UMC
The Church Council voted to affirm a community study that explores the possibility of creating a
Methodist Community Center at Rincon UMC. The goal is to understand where our church facilities
can be used by respected community agencies in such a way that we can help our neighbors in need.
This Christian witness can then be a doorway through which
unchurched people can know the love of Christ is real.
The South Georgia Conference has provided us with a
demographic tool known as Mission Insite. I used the tool on
Friday, May 17 to query the neighborhood within a one mile
radius of our campus. According to Mission Insite: 63.2% of
the 3,495 people living within a one mile radius of Rincon UMC are not involved in the life of a local
church. The top reasons cited for not participating tells me that they really don't know us. The only
way to reach people that have the wrong idea about us is to show them that we love them by meeting
them at the point of their need. There are 488 family households with children of which 6% are living
below the poverty line. That is 29 families with children living in poverty within a mile of our church
campus! Certainly we can help.
I look forward to spending my summer talking and listening to the community agencies and our
congregation about a new thing that God is asking us to do. I will meet you in small groups, one-on-
one, on the phone, and in person. Let us make this a great summer.

“Summer Rain”
Oh, what is so pure as the glad summer rain,
That falls on the grass where the sunlight has lain?
And what is so fair as the flowers that lie
All bathed in the tears of the soft summer sky?
The blue of the heavens is dimmed by the rain
That wears away sorrow and washes out pain;
But we know that the flowers we cherish would die
Were it not for the tears of the cloud-laden sky.
The rose is the sweeter when kissed by the rain,
And hearts are the dearer where sorrow has lain;
The sky is the fairer that rain-clouds have swept,
And no eyes are so bright as the eyes that have wept.
