The Romans typically recorded historic
occasions and identified monuments with solemn
prose and beautiful inscriptions in stone. The
perfectly sized and spaced Roman capital letters—meant to be read from a
distance and cut with sharp terminals (serifs) to
catch the light—established a standard
that calligraphers and font designers still follow.

The early cigar box labels provided a platform for artists to experiment and exhibit their artworks.
With the evolution of the US copyright law, cigar producers were able to create a protected identity for their products in the form of cigar box labels.

1919, in Weimar, Germany.
Graphic design firms sprang up in response to the increased demand for
artistic layout of ads and print materials. The first graphic design school, Bauhaus, was founded in
1919 in Germany, and was quickly followed by graphic design schools
around the world. In the 1950s, logo design became a big deal, as
branding through a logo gained popularity. This began a subset of
graphic design known as “corporate identity”.

1936The 1936 Turing machine was first
proposed by Alan Turing in 1936 and became the foundation for theories about computing and
computers. The machine was a device that printed symbols on
paper tape in a manner that emulated a person following a series of logical instructions.
Without these fundamentals, we wouldn't have the computers we
use today.
Alan Turing “The New
Typography”
He pioneered production techniques and stylistic devices used throughout the twentieth century. Influenced by the new Bauhaus typography, Jan Tschichold began to use serifless typefaces and designed simplified layouts. In a special 1925 issue of “typographische mitteilungen” entitled “elementare typographie”, introduced in the form of theses the most important approaches to the new typography design.

Sabon was one of Tschichold's completed typefaces. It has been revived as Sabon Next by Jean Francois Porchez for Linotype.
