Opening Sequence

Page 2: Lovely Bones Opening Sequence

Genre• Lovely bones is a drama fantasy thriller.

• It is seen as a drama as a young girl terribly dies with the film, and some of the camera shots which are used are very naturalistic to reflect this.

• Fantasy as the young girl is believed not to be dead and is waiting in the ‘in between space’ to move on.

• Thriller because of the way she and the other girls die is very horrible.

Sound• The music that plays at the beginning when the girl is a young

child is very slow, soft and peaceful which reflects the life she is living. However it also has a creepy feel to it which leaves the audience guessing what will happen later.

• The film at times is narrated by the girl, telling her story of how she died. At times the things she says reflects what will happen next such as “he is stuck in a perfect world”.

• When the scene changes to another period of time the music changes. Its fast paced, appropriate to the time period and reflects how happy her life was then before she died.

• A final music change is when the family at the far, the music becomes more spooky and slow. The narration also at that point says “its funny the memories you keep” this could symbolize the locations importance.

• When at the farm the families voices are mumbled whilst the girl is narrating, showing that it is her recalling on a memory.

Camera Angles, Shots and Movements• The very first shot is a extreme close up and zoom out of a

snow globe, which may show some importance of this object. It is very childlike.

• This film uses many close ups and medium shots to show that the film is partially naturalistic, by using these it also helps to reflect the drama genre.

• There is pan of the new location, which helps to show the audience where the whole film is set and where the family live.

• A point of view shot from the camera is cleverly used to show the girls excitement about having a camera and life itself. Also during the sequence are a lot of fast movement shots again showing the girls excitement and child like energy.

• A shot has been paused and zoomed out to show that the girl has taken a photo. A memory that has been captured.

Editing

• In the first scene there are many simple cuts, which make it very edgy and will reflect the horror genre.

• Edited flash has been added in to show she is taking loads of photos.

• A photo of her on screen, slowly zooms in forward and fades to black as she says “captures a moment before its gone forever” the words reflect what’s going on in the shot and in the film.

Narrative, Titles and Audience• The film is a linear narrative but has a major

time change at the beginning of the film.• The title shot fades in slowly and fades

away, this can reflect what will happen in the film to the little girl.

• The audience for this film I believe could be anyone as it appeals to a wide audience. A young audience as they can relate to the main characters. Parents as they may feel the pain of the parents. People who are interested in the 3 genres and more.

Mise en Scene and Representation• Moving forward through time is represented through the

parents. First of all they are in bed looking very young in the way they act and dress. The photo on their bedside table is of the girl when she is young, then pictures changes to show she has grown and time has moved on.

• Photos being taken a lot during the film which represents the memories that the girl is narrating on, as if the film was all a memory.

• When family is at the farm the main girl seems detached from what is going on, this represents what happens there later on in the film. Makes the audience think.

• The family is represented as a stereotypical family, through the normal morning chores such as having breakfast, small arguments (about developing film which is very important to remember later on in the film).
