Often the partially full bag commands the highest price on the shelf. You don’t let the butcher put his thumb on the scale and don’t pay for fairy dust in a seed bag. Grass Seed 101 Here are some simple rules to follow when buying grass seed. First, read the label. Every grass seed bag has an analysis label. It is usually on the back in the superfine print. Read it. It lists what seed variet- ies are in the mix, and will show the inert matter, weed and crop content, germination and purity. Avoid ugly weeds and grasses like annual rye, orchard grass and coarse bladed K-31. Read the analysis label and only pay for the real grass seed inside. Second, do the math. Bring your pocket calculator and always calculate the one pound price when buying seed. Modern pack- aging makes the true weight and cost of grass seed a bit of a math quiz. It’s like buying a carton of eggs. You don’t know if the price is right until you know how many eggs you get. Only pure Grass Pad seed in a Grass Pad bag; no pictures, no magic coating, now waste paper. Because at the Grass Pad, we think there is green environmen- tal magic in the green grass plant, we recommend more seed not less. We put fifty pounds of grass seed in a fifty pound bag and sug- gest you use it all. Overseeding provides genetic diversity and youthful vigor to grass habitat on the plains of Nebraska and on the lawns of Omaha. Of all the trees and ow-ers that show off in the springtime few can match the the Prarie re Cra-bapple for drive off the road good looks. It’s the Christie Brinkley of crab trees. It is one of those

p l a n t s that you love to sell in the n u r s e r y business because it makes cus tom-ers hap-py.

In May, innumerable crimson buds open to dark purple-red owers that do not fade. The springtime leaves are also a hazy dark red that mature to a dark tawny green through the grow-

ing season. This plant is a gorgeous in bloom and offers a strong contrast to white blooming pears or dogwoods.

In October, the leaves turn a bright orange and the tree carries shiny dark red berries that hold well on the branches and are favored by songbirds. This is not your grand-mother’s old fashioned crab tree. The small hard fruit is not messy and the leaves are not bothered by apple scab fungus and re blight.

O m a h a lawns have a bumper crop of weeds this spring. How

come?? Last summer’s dry weather opened lawns up to this spring’s weed invasion. Fall rains and the long winter snow cover helped baby weeds sprout and spread before lawn grasses turned on their engines.

Killing spring weeds is a matter of temperature and timing. Cold temperatures and unexpected rain showers will save unsightly weeds. The solution is to apply a repeat application when temperature and weather improve.

Step 2, Loveland Weed and Feed will work at daytime temperatures above 70 degrees and nighttime temps above 65 degrees. It works best

when applied to large damp leaves and no rain for 48 hours. Talk to the weatherman.

Liquid weed killers such as Speed Zone or Trimec will give the best kills on small leafed weeds. Performance will improve if Uncle’s Stikit, spreader sticker is then added to the mix.

The cool spring temperatures of April give way to the predictable warm weather of May. Once temperatures warm into the 80 degree range, broadleaf weed killers work quickly. Dandelions and Thistle will curl overnight and die. Dainty weeds such as clover and henbit will not curl but gradually turn yellow and disappear. If your weed killing program has been frustrated by cool rainy weather, wait for the sunshine…and try again.

Healthy grass turf needs to be fed. You feed your dog, you feed your cat. You need

to feed your grass. In a low nutrition environment weeds prosper. In a high nutrition environment grass prospers. If you feed the grass, the grass grows. If you don’t feed the grass, the weeds grow. When the grass grows, it lls in bare spots, chokes out weeds and protects itself from wear damage. If you nd a weed you’ll nd a bare spot.

Meat and Potatoes: Uncle says feed the grass meat and potatoes, not candy bars and ice cream. A good lawn program requires regular feedings of speciality turf grass fertilizer. Garden fertilizers are for carrots. Agricultural fertilizers are for corn. Uncle’s Idiot Proof Program is for turf grass.

Conspiracy Theory: Weedy summer grasses like crabgrass, foxtail and goose grass make winter bare spots that ll up with dandelions in the Spring. A thick lawn begins now by starting with fresh new seed and feeding it lots of meat and potatoes. No bare spots. No weeds.

areas and enhance a garden setting. Containers emphasize entrances to homes; or to the garden from the patio. Containers can be used to screen unsightly views or soften the edge of a patio bordered by lawn. Pots full of plump, well cared for tropicals add a lush, intimate feel to a patio seating area.

The pot spot is at the Grass Pad. Glazed ceramic pots in bold coordinating colors, sizes and shapes for any backdrop. Choose with care; your relatives should want to ght over your pots! The bigger the better and the more, the merrier!

Uncle says three easy steps will create a basic framework for any pot, basket, or container. The rest is up to you.

The Thrill: The plants that

make the big impact and provide height and structure to your container. Dracaena spikes, Zonal Geraniums, New Guinea Impatiens or Dragon Wing™ Begonia add thrill. Purple fountain grass or ornamental millet work well. Perennials such as sedum or penstemon can be use, also Sun coleus or Magilla™ Perilla

The Fill: Flowering or foliage plants that will ll out the body of your container. Choose complimentary colors of pastels or bold colors. Select plants that will grow at similar rates so one plant that will grow at similar rates so one plant does not overrun another. Diamond Frost Euphobia™, Osteospermum, and Lantana are just a few.

The Spill: Trailing varieties that spill and cascade over the side of your container. For foliage try ivies, licorice plant or vinca vine. Add color with bacopa, trailing verbena, trailing calilbrachoa, scaevola or torenia.

Try new plants and combinations. Use bold and colorful foliage. Add untraditional plants such as caladiums, upright elephant ears, cannas or large tropicals.

The in-sect that c a u s e s the most

damage to Omaha lawns is the white grub. It is the most dif cult to control because the grub attacks the grass from the basement. The white grub chews on grass roots underneath the thatch layer of the grass root system. This heavy thatch layer protects the grub from the insecticides that so easily kill bugs that feed on the surface.

The most important thing to remember about

grub control is that it must be watered heavily in with 1-2 inches of water in order to penetrate the grasses natural thatch layer and reach the grub feeding in the basement.

In the age of instant grati cation, turf grass sod provides the “instant lawn.” Sod is to grass seed what pop tarts are to breakfast. Homeowners who want to have instant green grass by tomorrow should consider sod instead of grass seed.

On established homes, sod is an excellent choice for certain problem areas. Small patches around the driveway or patio that have been damaged over the winter months are easily repaired by sod. Garden patches or ower beds that are being replaced or redesigned will be immediately transformed into lawn. In any area where washouts and erosions are a problem, sod is a natural choice.

Around the house, in front of gutter downspouts or on slopes where seed will be washed away, sod is the problem solver. Dog runs, play grounds, tire tracks, gasoline or fertilizer burns, all are common problems for which sod is the answer.

Once the soil is smooth and level, apply Loveland

Golf Course Starter and calcium to the bare soil. Sod may then be installed in staggered rows.

Watering the sod installation is the most important step in any successful sod job. Fresh sod must be watered at once and kept wet for two to three weeks. Homeowners should plan to water sod at least twice a day for one hour at a setting. Sod should be sloppy wet after installation.

How much water is enough? Use Uncle’s Wet Beach Towel Test. Place a wet beach towel on your driveway and see how fast it dries out. On hot windy days, the beach towel and the sod can dry out in hours. The beach towel will not die, the sod will.

In warm weather, sod begins to heat up in the roll as soon as it is cut. The better the sod, the sooner it begins to heat up. Sod that cannot be installed promptly should be unrolled in the shade and watered until the project is ready to start.

GET READY TO RUMBLEHot humid temperatures mean disease and fungus in your yard.

Lawn spots are a lot easier to prevent than control, so start early. By applying Grass Pad Fungus Fighter we can inoculate the lawn before the pathogens get inside and wreak havoc. We’ve just been through dandelion season and we feel like we can x anything. We saw the yellow bloom, we sprayed, we killed… easy. Lawn spots are a little different. They hit us when the grass is suffering from the heat and drought and recovery is a lot slower, so start now. The Grass Pad Fungus Fighter will allow the healthy lawn to out grow many of the diseases that show up. Bluegrass LawnsBluegrass diseases will show up in the form of a slime or dust that wipes off, or even a patch that seems to die over night. Mow the Blues shorter in the spring and be vigil of the areas under trees or on the north that seem to hold the heavy dew longer in the morning. Mow the lawn a little shorter while it is cool and rain is plentiful. Raise the mowing height as June matures and don’t let the lawn dry out too much before starting the summer watering schedule. If something shows up

apply Grass Pad contact fungicide and follow it up with Grass Pad systemic fungicide application one week later. If large areas die in the summer, add a little Stadium Special Sports Rye to your blend this fall and do what you can to help the soil.Fescue LawnsFescue diseases are a little more predictable. They show up as soon as the temperature and humidity add up to 150, usually early in June. Applying Fungus Fighter every 30 days through mid August should keep us ahead of the game. If some spots show up or if it looks like every other blade of grass is brown, apply contact fungicide and then the systemic fungicide one week later. Be sure and over seed every fall. Add a hybrid Bluegrass to the mix and only use the newest varieties like the Heat Wave fescue to ensure the most up to date protection that science can provide. One-Two PunchIf you’re ghting fungus patch now give it the 1-2 punch. Use Grass Pad fast acting contact fungicide for immediate control followed by an application of Grass Pad systemic fungicide for long lasting control. Get to the Grass Pad, see our grass doctors and get the right “anti-biotic” for your lawn.

Now is the time to kill the ugly s u m m e r weeds that plan to am-bush your

lawn as soon as summer soil temperatures heat up. Crab-grass, foxtail, goosegrass, barnyard grass and all the other ugly annual summer weed grasses lie dormant in the soil waiting to sprout and ruin your well tended Omaha lawn.

This nasty weedgrass in-vasion takes place every year when lawn soil tem-peratures reach 55 degrees. These alien seeds will sprout sooner in bare spots that are open to the sun, usually in open areas on the west and south. The warm cracks around your driveway, patio and sidewalk will be crab-grass heaven. Depending on the year, this ugly water-grass hatch usually takes place during mid-April.

In lawns with well estab-lished turf, in the shade or on the north side of the house soil temperatures stay cool-er. In these areas you may not see ugly weed grasses species until May. In any event it is not nice to pro-crastinate with Mother Na-ture. Once these ugly sum-mer grasses sprout, they are hard to kill. Ben Franklin said it best: “Prevent Crabgrass Now” or you will really feel silly.

The best way to control these ugly summer weed grasses is with two applica-tions of PREVENT plus fertil-izer, once now and again in eight weeks. The PREVENT formula gives 98% control of crabgrass, foxtail, gooseg-rass, watergrass, barnyard grass and all other summer annual weed grasses. Your “Idiot Proof “ summer lawn care program begins now with the PREVENT formula.

Step 1- Mow the lawn to a height of 1 1/2" to 2".

Step 2- Rake or sweep the lawn to remove heavy clippings or other debris. Rough the surface of the soil giving special attention to bare spots.

Step 3- Apply Golf Course Starter fertilizer at 8 lbs. per 1000 ft.

Step 4- Spread the seed with a rotary or a hand cranked “whirlwind” spreader. Special attention should be given to spots where the ground is bare. Extra seed should be applied by hand to these spots.

Step 5- On bare spots apply a light mulch of sphagnum peat or Grass Pad seed dressing. Topsoil & black peats contain weed seeds and should not be used.Step 6 -Water the seedbed lightly so the soil surface is moist. Continue watering lightly so the soil does not become hard or baked.Step 7- When the seedlings reach a height of 2-3 inches, mow to a height of 3 inches with a sharp mower at a time when the grass is not wet.Step 8- Mid-April: Apply Tupersan or Siduron based crabgrass pre emergent safe for new seedingStep 9- Late May: Apply full strength PREVENT Crabgrass Control to all areas that have been mowed at least twice.

English Garden hosta lillies are as close to “idiot proof” as a plant can get. These tufted leafy plants are grown for both their distinctive foliage and seasonal owers. Their foliage will vary from deep green to bright yellow, as well as dozens of variegated combinations in between. Their leaves may be large, small, radial or oval. Their owers form in spikes or clusters at the end of a central stalk that rises out of the foliage.

Classic hostas may be used in key positions in the garden where ne foliage effects can be appreciated. They do well in containers or as border plantings for sidewalk, patio or foundation. They are often used as a frame for setting off summer annuals. Hostas do well planted at the base of shade trees, bird baths or statuary. In new homes, hostas are a low maintenance

plant to help ll up endless rows of empty mulch beds.

But don’t be deceived. Once established hosta lillies are tough customers. They may be used in large beds, on slopes

and low maintenance areas. They are outstanding when used on drainage ways to hold rock and agstone in place. If a leaf is damaged simply cut it off and another will grow back.

Most hosta varieties prefer partial shade and moist soil in summer. Newer varieties will tolerate more sun. If you are planting in a sunny spot

check the Grass Pad label to con rm your choice. An “idiot proof” hosta tool kit includes Canadian sphagnum peat or Landscaper's Max Mix. These should be worked into

the soil six to eight inches. Follow this with Uncle’s Root Accelerator root accelerator once at planting and again at thirty day intervals.

At mid summer, potted hosta plants will cost as much as fteen dollars. But

right now hostas are available as bare root stock. These bare root plants are easy to establish and represent a real value. The Grass Pad has a terri c selection of old standards as well as new exotics. In either case the rst time novice or the experienced gardener will save on March specials. Uncle says load up now.

No weeds.

A two step program is best with one application Long Lasting Grub Control in June or July and second application of Quick Killer for Grubs in late August or early September. Grubs cause expensive damage to Omaha lawns every year. A summertime preventative program is money well spent.

UNCLE SAYS

Want the soft friendly feel and lush thick look to your turf? You should choose Estate Mix™, bluegrass and peren-nial sports turf rye mix, is an excellent choice for fall lawn renovating and spring seeding. Give your lawn that soft well mani-cured look of a golf course fairway. Aggressive blue-grass varieties will fill in routine damage and perennial sports turf rye adds durability in heavy traffic areas. Good for shade areas and excellent in full sun.

Blue Wave is a blend of fine bluegrasses spe-cifically selected for the Omaha area. Blue Wave is an aggressive bluegrass blend that will fill in routine

damage from normal wear and tear. In many seasons it will out compete fescue turf and give your lawn a striking green color when zoysia has turned toasty brown.

Stadium Special™, sports turf perennial rye blend can be mixed in bluegrass or fescue lawns to increase wear toler-ance and playability with-out sacrificing good looks. These elite varieties are used on golf courses and sports fields through-out the country for their durability and good looks. Stadium Special™ starts fast, is excellent for quick cover and very good in full sun.

Low maintenance at the top of your priority list? You should choose Macho Mix, elite fescue/sports turf rye grass seed mix, specially selected for Omaha. Varieties are cho-sen for color, wear, heat, and drought tolerance. Very good shade toler-ance as well as an excel-lent full sun performer. Macho Mix contains 5% perennial sport turf rye. Sports turf rye has the ability to hold the fescue up in heavy traffic areas. Great for play zones and dog runs. The quick ger-mination from perennial sports rye makes Macho MIx a valuable tool when needing quick cover or a

fast start for slopes. Heatwave, turf type fes-

cue, is a blend of elite fescue varieties chosen for their superior perfor-mance in the Omaha area. Heatwave is blended and tested to be free of nox-ious weeds. Weed con-tamination routinely found in coarse fescue blends is never found in Heatwave.

Heatwave Plus, the lat-est advance in turf fescue genetics, elite turf fescues mixed with heat tolerant bluegrass. This combina-tion provides a turf with all the benefits of Heatwave fescue as well as the heal-ing and thickening charac-teristics of bluegrass.

MORE BARE SPOTSS p r i n g

lawns have started to green up and the remain ing bare spots look worse

than ever. Whether the damage is from the dog, ice melt, crabgrass or win-ter weather, it is now clear. You need a little more.

More seed: In a fine bladed bluegrass lawn choose Loveland Blue or Estate Mix. For fescue lawns choose Heat Wave or Overtime.

More water: Water your grass seed every day. Mother nature needs little help.

Topdress: Cover your seed with a thin layer

of PrimeraFC Seed Dressing or Canadian Sphagnum peat. This will hold moisture close to the seed and speed germina-tion. Do not use bagged topsoils.

Golf Course Starter: New grass plants need to be fed if they are going to mature before hot summer weather. Feed the seed…easy does it…once now and again in three weeks.

Patience: Cold spring soils will not sprout grass seed as quickly as in the fall. It simply takes longer. Take a handful of grass seed and start it in a small styrofoam cup on the kitchen windowsill. It will sprout more quickly and preview the future.

SHOP LOVELAND FROM THE GROUND UP!SPREAD THE LOVELAND STORY – GIVE US A WHIRL – OPEN 8 DAYS A WEEK

I CAN’T GROW GRASS UNDER MY SHADE TREE

When the heat of sum-mer sets in and we go out to set under the old oak tree

for a nice cool evening in the shade it is always frustrating to fi nd the once lush green grass to be brown or completely gone. What happens under the tree is the tree will out compete the turf grasses for resources necessary for life. What would seem to be the most obvious resource in short supply would be light. While the area under the tree can be shady, it is rarely too shady, to sus-tain turf. The real shortage is the water. We all know how diffi cult it is to keep the portion of the lawn in the sun moist where the only water consumer is the delicate root system of the turf. Imagine how much water it takes to sustain a full-grown tree having several acres of leaf surface from which water evaporates. A large shade tree can use hun-dreds of gallons of wa-ter a day. Water shaded areas more frequently in summer to keep grass growing. To compensate for this unfair advantage the tree holds over the turf we try

to level the playing fi eld in a couple of ways. One way is to make the soil less compact and increase its water holding capacity. This is accomplished by core aerating and fi lling the aeration holes with Primera FC grass seed dressing. Seeding should also be done at this time with Uncle’s Shade Mix that contains grasses with lower water and nutri-ent requirements. These turf and fi ne fescues are improved hybrids that handle poor grow-ing conditions very well. Re-seeding shady areas three times a year (spring, summer, and fall) will also add new vigorous grass

plants into the ma-turing turf stand that is weak-ened by low light conditions.

A routine tri-mester seeding program will keep shady areas green all year long. The tree roots also com-pete for nutrients in the soil. Loveland Golf Course Starter fertilizer will replace these de-pleted nutrients and ac-celerate the growth of the shade grasses to matu-rity. Milorganite is also a good choice. It is 100% organic fertilizer adds iron and will not burn at nor-mal rates. Apply the fertil-izer at the time of seeding and again in 4 weeks.

UNCLE’S IDIOT-PROOF PROGRAMNOW ON TVSTARTING APRIL 9 - APRIL 24WOWT CHANNEL 6

April show-ers bring d a n d e l i o n f l o w e r s . April also brings hen-bit, chick-

weed, oxalis and an occa-sional thistle with their bright white, yellow and purple flowers. Wherever there was a winter bares-pot, now there is a Spring weed surprise. No matter how good your good your lawn looked last fall. It now looks like the salad bar at Denny’s.

These winter broadleaf weeds are not controlled by Step #1 Prevent. In early April when nights and soils are cold and the weeds are small, liq-uid weed killers such as Trimec or Speed Zone will work the best. Uncle says make sure to use Gordon’s Spreader

Sticker to help the spray stick to the small waxy leaves and use the stron-ger mixing formula. Also, be patient. At cold soil temperatures these plants die more slowly, and you may need a second appli-cation after seven to ten days.

Once warm weather and warm nightime soils become the norm, a tradi-tional Step #2 Loveland Weed and Feed gives a good weed kill and helps fill in bare spots. Granular weed killers work their best on large leafed weeds. If you apply Loveland Weed & Feed when the lawn is damp with a morning or evening dew, your dandelions will be curling the next day. Damp leaf, warm night and no rain for 24 hours and Dandy Dandelion will curl up and die.

DANDY DANDELION
