Many shows are expected to sell out before opening night and you won’t want to miss a single moment of the magic.

WBTT’S 2018–19 SEASON OF SHOWS“The Command Season” presents two of our most requested and celebrated original shows, a Broadway musical, and a drama by the prolific civil rights activist and playwright, James Baldwin.
Raisin: This Tony-nominated show brings music to the emotional story of A Raisin in the Sun. New York Times critic Clive Barnes called Raisin “warm and loving.”
Marvin Gaye: Prince of Soul: By far the most-requested show in all of WBTT’s history, this tribute to the late singer-songwriter was created and adapted by WBTT Founder and Artistic Director Nate Jacobs. Sheldon Rhoden will once again wow audiences with his exciting and sensual portrayal of this legend.
The Amen Corner: Playwright James Baldwin’s The Amen Corner is relative to his life story, and deals with faith, family, and the choices and histories that can divide families.
Love Sung in the Key of Aretha: A much-requested tribute to the “Queen of Soul,” Aretha Franklin, created and adapted by Nate Jacobs.
WBTT’S HOLIDAY OFFERINGBlack Nativity: Our popular holiday offering will have a very special venue this year, the Sarasota Opera House! Though not part of the season, as a subscriber you can purchase tickets before the general public, with your subscription. See the enclosed separate form.

Raisin takes place in 1950s Southside Chicago and revolves around a working class black family aspiring to a better life
after the death of their father. Hope is sparked by the arrival of a $10,000 life insurance check. However,
conflict ensues when mother and son want to spend the money in different ways.
After several years of requests from theater patrons, Sheldon Rhoden—one of WBTT’s most popular troupe
members—will reprise the role of Marvin Gaye. This not-to-be-missed original show begins in the 1950s at the start
of Gaye’s career with Motown and follows its twists and turns until Gaye’s untimely death in the mid-1980s. A gifted, innovative and enduring talent, Gaye blazed the trail for the
continued evolution of popular black music.
Want “R-E-S-P-E-C-T?” Believe that there “Ain’t Nothing Like The Real Thing?” Four women musically review their life experiences as told through the songs made famous
by the legendary “Queen of Soul,” Aretha Franklin. In this original production, we celebrate Aretha’s
masterful artistry, bigger-than-life talent, and remarkable understanding of human relationships.

“Raisin” is presented by special arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH, INC.
“The Amen Corner” is presented by special arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH, INC.
For years, Sister Margaret Alexander has moved her Harlem congregation with a mixture of personal charisma and
ferocious piety. But when Margaret’s estranged husband, a scapegrace jazz musician, comes home to die, she is in
danger of losing both her standing in the church and the son she has tried to keep on the godly path.
The Amen Corner is a play about faith and family, about the gulf between black men and black women
and black fathers and black sons.
