“It's raining again”, said a girl sitting beside the window of her room. Shewatched droplets of rain fall down the lovely flowers in the garden in front of her window. “Days like this reminds me of that very day I've been betrayed”,she whispered to herself. She was too pre-occupied that she didn't noticesomeone calling her.

“Synthia! Wake up now. Today is your enrolment. You don't want to be ona very long line, do you? Get up now”, a girl's voice called. It was Synthia'solder sister Alexa. “I'm coming up to your room now.”

After a few moments, someone knocked on the door. Still, Synthia did notnotice it.

Alexa opened the door and saw Synthia staring by the window. Only thenSynthia notice her. Alexa said, “eat your breakfast now. You need to enroll early

so you can finish early. You wouldn't want to be in a very long line, wouldyou?”Synthia shook her head. “I was just looking at the flowers in our garden

being rained on.”“You still remember that day, don't you?” Alexa asked.“I still can't believe Amanda and Eric both betrayed me! How could they

do that? I gave everything I've got just to be with Eric but he still broke myheart more painfully than I expected. And then, there's Amanda who I treatedalmost like a sister! It still hurts so much”, she answered.

Alexa sat by her side, hugged her and said, “you don't need them. Thethings they did and gave to you only proved that you just chose the wrong

person to give your heart to and also the wrong person to be your friend. Youclearly deserve people better than those. I know someone will come for you andhe will be the right one, the one who would rather hurt himself than to hurtyou.” She let go of Synthia and walked through the door. “Go down and haveyour breakfast. Lara and Mina called me and asked me to tell you that they will

be waiting for you at school.” She left and went down to the dining room.Synthia stood up and went inside the bathroom to take a shower. She

came out after half an hour and dressed up. She put on a red blouse and a color pink pants then she hurried downstairs.

Alexa saw her walking towards the door. “Aren't you going to eat first?”“No. I 'll just go eat with Mina and Lara after I finish enrolling”, she

answered as she opened the door. “Goodbye. I'll be going now.” She grabbedher bag and went out.



When she arrived at school after an hour and a quarter, she immediatelystarted enrolling herself. She finished after two hours.

Looking at her schedule while walking, she didn't notice a guy in front of her and bumped into him. “I'm so sorry that I was so busy looking at myschedule that I wasn't aware of where I was going”, she apologized.

The guy was tall, curly-haired, wearing sunglasses, a blue pollo and anecrue-colored shorts. He smiled at her. “It's okay. There's no harm done,anyway”, the guy said as he remove his sunglasses and smiled at her. Then hestared at her. “Synthia, is that you? You're more beautiful than I remember youare.”

“Daniel? You are Daniel?” she asked.“Yes! I'm so glad that you still remember me”, he said. “How are you? It's

been a very long time since we last met.”Synthia frowned at him. “It's been four years, Daniel. It's been four yearssince my high school bestfriend left me without telling me he'll be flyingsomewhere out of the country.”

“I'm very sorry I wasn't able to tell you. It was all too sudden. I didn'teven know we were leaving until I got home from the elementary graduation.There was nothing I could do. All our things were packed. I told my mom Iwanted to stay here in Manila and not to go with them to London, but she justignored what I wanted”, he replied.

“I thought I will never see you again since you disappeared”, she said.“Why didn't you even send me a single email over the internet?!”

“I'm so sorry. I really am. I was too busy that I had not a time for an emailfor me to send you. I hope you're not furious”, he apologized.

Synthia draw a deep breath and said, “it's okay. What's important is thatwe meet again. So are you going to study here now?”

Daniel nodded. “I'll be taking up AB Literature. English will be mymajor.”

“Really?” Synthia said with a surprised face. “I'm taking the same as well.What a very big coincidence it is! That means we'll be classmates everytime.”

“Yeah. A very big coincidence”, Daniel laughed.Their conversation was cut short when two girls approached them. One

was a very skinny girl wearing a green jacket with the zipper open, underneaththe jacket, she's wearing a white tanktop, and jeans. The other girl was a bitslim and was wearing a dark blue shirt and a skirt. The skinny one was Mina



and the other one was Lara.“Hello, Synthia. Finished your enrollment? Want to go hang out the mall?

I'm a bit hungry”. Mina said.Synthia nodded. “Let's go then. I'm also hungry. I haven't had a bite for

breakfast.” She looked at Daniel. “Want to come with us? You can stillremember Lara and Mina, right?”

“Of course”, Daniel answered. “Will it be alright for them?”“Don't be ridiculous”, Lara laughed. “We'd like to hear every single thing

you did in the last four years that you weren't with us.”“Okay then”, he said.They went to the mall near their school and entered a fastfood chain to

have a little snack.“So Daniel, tell us all those things you've been doing within the four years

you left us. We would like to know everything. Don't leave a single detail.”Mina asked Daniel. Then she faced Synthia. “Let's line up for our order. Let's just make Lara say everything that Daniel will tell her.”

They left Lara and Daniel alone and lined up for their orders.As the two girls were lining for their food, Daniel and Lara were talking

about everything that had happened to Daniel for the past four years.“So you were in London? Wow! You should have bought us some

souvenirs to give us before you went back here”, she said. “By the way, who'sthe new lucky girl right now? Who's the one girl owning your heart? Last time

we met, it was Synthia.”Daniel could not look Lara in the eye which gave her the answer to the

question.Lara smiled. “So it's still her? You still love Synthia, don't you?”Looking on the floor, Daniel nodded. “She is actually the reason I came

back here in the country. I'm so happy that saw her the very minute that I justfinished my erollment. I've been very guilty since the day I left and wasn't evenable to say farewell to her. I felt really, really bad since that day.”

“When are you planning to tell her you have feeling for her?” she asked.“No. I don't want to tell it to her yet. I'm afraid she won't accept my love

for her and keep her distance from me. I'd rather suffer the consequences of nottelling her because I know that being just a friend will last longer that beinglovers. And even if she feels the same, which I doubt, I might do something thatwill hurt her feelings. I do not want that. I'd rather suffer secretly loving her than to grab the opportunity to hurt her,” he replied.



“Okay. That is your choice. I cannot do anything about it.” Lara pulledout a mirror and started checking on her face.

Their conversation was interupted when Mina and Synthia arrived at their table with their orders. They were carrying a couple of burgers, a spaghetti, asalad and four glasses of red iced tea.

“Whoa. You are fast.” He looked at Mina.Synthia answered, “fast? We were already gone for fifteen minutes. I

think both of you are really enjoying each other's company.” She put their orders down their table and sat beside Lara while Mina left them to get somespoons and forks. “So? What are you two talking about while we are away?”

Lara found Daniel staring at her and understood right away what the look wanted to tell her. “Nothing. We were just talking about how amazing you look with what you are wearing today. It really fits you.”

“Yes. That's what we are talking about. And also somethings about what Iwas doing while I was out of the country”, he added.“Oh, I see,” she said.

When they were done with their food, they went to some boutiques and bought some clothes. Synthia kept asking for Daniel's opinions but Daniel onlykept saying she looks good in it even when she really doesn't like the dressMina and Lara were recommending to her. She though that the three were justmessing on her.

Finally, before they left the store, Synthia found something she liked bythe second she have seen it. She immediately grabbed the dress, asked for her size and pulled out her credit card from her wallet.

Daniel went closer to her and looked at the dress she wanted to buy. “Doyou really want to have this dress?”

Synthia nodded.“We'll take this one,” he said to the saleslady as he pointed his finger on

the dress. He pulled out his debit card and gave it to the saleslady.Synthia looked so surprise with what Daniel did and wasn't able to say

anything for a minute that he was purchasing the dress. And when he gave the paperbag to her, she finally said, “you did not have to do this, you know?”

“Yes, I know that. But when I looked at it, I felt it will look very good onyou. And let's just say that this is part of my upcoming 'sorry' gifts for nottelling you or even communicating with you for the past four years,” heanswered.



Synthia smiled. “Thank you so much.” She gave Daniel a hug.Lara and Mina were looking at the two for the past seconds. They knew

there was another reason, the real reason, why he bought that dress for Synthia.“Are we going to another store or another mall? Or are we going home

now?” Mina asked.“I'm a bit tired. I want to rest. Let's go home, Mina,” Lara said.“I'll take all of you home,” Daniel offered.“No. We already called our driver to pick us up now so it's just Synthia

that you'll be taking home,” Lara answered. She walkedtowards the door of the boutique while pulling Mina with her.

Daniel and Synthia were left in the store.“We better get going as well. I'm not bringing my cellphone right now so

Alexa might be worried about me at this moment,” she said.

“Okay. Let me take you to your house. I also want to see how Alexa isdoing now. I want to see what are the changes in her,” Daniel answered.

They arrived at Synthia's place an half an hour before lunchtime. The rainhaven't stopped yet. They found Alexa waiting for Synthia at the front door.Alexa's face was puzzled when she saw that Synthia was riding an unfamiliar car and with a guy.

“Don't you remember Daniel, Alexa?” she asked. “He's staying from nowon and we'll be studying here in the Philippines. We'll be classmates.”

“Really?” Alexa looked at Daniel. “That's great!” She looked at Synthia.“Would it be possible if you let us talk to each other alone?”

“Of course. Take your time. I'll be inside my room if you need anything.”She ran towards the door and went inside.

When Synthia was gone, Alexa said, “did you ask me over the internetwhat course Synthia will be taking up so you can take it as well?”

“Yes. I wanted to be with her and be close to her just like what we used to be,” Daniel answered. “She is the only reason I am back here.”

“I know that. There's no need to tell me that.” She stared at the staircaseto see if Synthia will be coming down. When she thought she's not, shecontinued. “Why don't you tell her that you love her now? I know she feels thesame way for you. If only you know how much she cried when you left withouttelling, you'll also be convinced that she's not only loving you as a very specialfriend but more than that.”

“I am not ready for her,” he replied. “What if what you are saying is just



in your imagination? What's going to happen? Our friendship will be ruined. Ido not want that to happen.”

Alexa answered, “if you really love her, you'll be willing to risk your friendship and tell her you love her. And if she will ignore you for loving her,

just continue doing so that way you did and still doing until she realize that youare really worthy of her love.”

“As I have said, i'm not yet ready for that. I love your sister but I am stillnot ready to go that way. Let us be friends for now,” Daniel said.

They heard footsteps coming from the staircase. Synthia was comingdown from her room.

“It's your choice if you would not tell her the truth. The regret is yours,anyway. My sister is very beautiful. I would not be surprised if there will betimes that she'll receive so many love letters from so many guys,” Alexa said.

Synthia walked until she reached Alexa's side. She looked at Daniel.“Would you like to stay for lunch?”“Thank you very much but I cannot. I have things to do back home. I

wish I could. My parents already had seven missed calls on my phone.” He pulled his cellphone out of his pocket and let Synthia see.

“Oh, I see. Well, if you can come here whenever you have time to,”Synthia said.

“Thank you for bringing Synthia home safely. Take care.” Alexa smiled athim.

Daniel smiled back and went straight to the gater. Before he opened it, he paused for a couple of second and thought of saying his true feelings for Synthia. He looked back and saw her smiling at him. “No. I can't.” He smiled

back again and faced the gate once again. He opened it and walked out.

When Daniel was already gone, Synthia told Alexa everything that hadhappened. Of course, Alexa was not surprised at all of what Daniel did for Synthia that day since she already knew how Daniel really felt for her. She justsmiled at Synthia as she was telling all of those things.

When Synthia was finish, she went upstairs. Alexa stayed downstairs andwent to their garden. She walked until she reached the side of the beautifulroses in their garden. Those roses were the ones Daniel and Synthia planted fiveyears ago the day when they had nothing to do until Alexa asked them to plantsome roses for the garden. Alexa could not help but smile as she was staring atthe red roses. “Daniel's love for Synthia is like these roses. They are still so



beautiful after so many years,” she said to herself.Then she reached for her cellphone and called Daniel.After the first ring, she already heard Daniel's voice. “Hello? Alexa? Is

this you?”“Yes. This is Alexa,” she said. “ Would you like to join the outing on

Saturday? We will be staying at the resort until Friday afternoon. A week fromnow will be the start of the school. It's for relaxing before the school starts. I amvery sure Synthia will be so happy if you come with us. Mina and Lara arecoming as well.”

Daniel replied, “then I'm in. What time will it be anyway? Can I gostraight to the resort or are we going to wait for each other somewhere?”

“We'll wait for you here,” Alexa said. “Quarter to nine is the call time. If you'd like to bring along some food for the outing, bring something.”

“Of course I will. What is Synthia's new favorite food right now?” heasked.“She still likes barbeques,” she answered.“Really? So she didn't change her favorite food at all? That's still her

favorite?” He sounded very surprised. It's also obvious that he was smilingwhile he was saying that. “Then I will bring some for the outing. But I will also

bring some things else just not to be obvious I asked you about her favoritefood.”

“I know what you are going to ask next,” she said.

“Okay. What was I going to ask you?” Daniel replied.Alexa giggled over the phone. “You were going to ask me what drink she

likes. It's kind of predictable. You asked for her favorite food. It will befollowed by asking her favorite drink. It's red iced tea.”

“Thanks. I will bring all those and some extras, too,” he said.“Okay, thank you also,” she answered then she hang up.

Saturday morning, Daniel was already in front of Synthia's house aminute before nine o'clock. Alexa saw her from her window and went down tolet him inside the house. He stayed inside the living room. He nearly jumpedfrom the sofa when he saw Synthia coming inside the room. She smiled at himand left him for a while to prepare the things they will be bringing.

After ten minutes, she came back carrying two big bags. Daniel took the bags and put it aside.

“Thank you.” Synthia smiled. “You're very early. The call time is quarter



Mina smiled at him. “That's alright. We are not forcing you to come withus. You have the right to decline if the reason is far more important than usenjoying in the beach.”

Robert went inside and gave Mina a hug. “You are the best girlfriend thatI've ever found. I am so lucky for having you.”

“Our only problem now is how will we get there without Robert? Wehave no van to ride that will fit all of us including the things we will bring,”Lara said.

“I will be willing to lend you the van I have. I will just take a taxi home. Iwould not mind at all. If I cannot be in the pictures of you in the beach, at leasttake a photo of you with the van there.” He is still hugging his girlfriend.

“Thank you so much. I am also lucky that I have you as a boyfriend.” Shekissed his cheeks.

“You better get going now.” She broke free of the hug of Robert.He digged his pocket for the keys, gave them to her and ran through thedoor. When he was halfway out the gate, he looked back at his girlfriend, gaveher a flying kiss and left.

Synthia asked Daniel, “ would it be alright for you if you are the one todrive us to the beach? Neither of us knows how to drive.”

“Of course, I'd be delighted to drive all of you to the resort. I just needsomeone to sit beside me to tell me where to go,” he replied.

Synthia raised her left hand. “I will sit beside you. I know all the roads

that can lead us to the resort.”Daniel felt his heart pounding quickly. He will be sitting beside Synthia

all their way to Ilocos. He felt so much joy.

They stopped by a gasoline station an hour after they left the house. Thecar ran out of gas because Robert forgot to tell them that he wasn't able to gasup the previous day. They considered themselves lucky that the gas didn't ranout before they were able to reach the gas station.

Mina called Robert on the phone. She asked what gasoline he's using for the van.

They left the gas station after the van was full of gas and did all the thingsthey needed to do like go to the comfort room and eat or buy snacks.

After a very long trip, they finally arrived at the resort all tired and wornout.

“I am so tired that the first thing I would like to do is sleep inside the



cottage,” Daniel said.“I am going to sleep inside the cottage, too. I feel sleepy after telling the

directions to you for us to reach this resort.” Synthia smiled and pulled Danieland they went to their cottage.

“Hmm... I can sense a very strong possibility those two can be lovers before we all get back home,” giggled Lara.

“I won't argue with that. I think they really make a very cute couple. Iwon't be angry if one day I'll find out that they are dating each other,” Alexaresponded.

Meanwhile, Daniel and Synthia were lying in two separate beds inside thecottage. That was the time they were exchanging words about how they've beenfor the past years they have not heard from each other.

“I'm serious. I never had a girlfriend in London. There are so many

beautiful girls ther but none of them made me fall because my heart's left here.Ever since I set foot on that land, I've been wanting to go back as soon as possible but my mother cancels all flights everytime our family's planning tohave a little vacation here,” Daniel said.

“So who was the lucky girl who captured your heart that made you leaveit to her even for a very long time?” she asked.

Daniel did not know what to reply. He could not say that she's the onewho's been holding his heart for so long. He's afraid it's too early to confesshow he really was feeling that time so he just answered, “I think you don't need

an answered to that. You will know soon who that person really is.”Synthia drew out a pout on her face. “Okay then, I'm going to sleep now. I

guess I won't be able to convince you to tell me who she is. I know you are verygood in keeping secrets.” She pulled her blanket to cover her and went to sleep.

When Daniel was sure she was really asleep, he got up and sat beside her.“Look at yourself in the mirror and you will find who I really loved ever sincethe day I stepped in elemetary.” He wanted to kiss her forehead but resisted itand went back to his own bed and slept.

The next day, the four went outside to prepare their own breakfast.Synthia ate a bowl of cereal and while the others helped themselves with mugsof coffee and toasts.

“I want to swim later before lunch. Who wants to join me?” Lara askedwhile reading a pocketbook in one hand and holding the mug with the other.

“I'm going with you. I am hoping to collect as many seashell as I can for



my collection. We have been going to resorts with swimming pools so it's beena while since I last got some,” Mina said, raising her hand.

“How about you?” Lara turned to Synthia.“Maybe I will go before after the sunset. I do not like sunburns,” Synthia

replied.Lara looked at Alexa.“I'm going with you but I am not going to swim. I will just walk along the

shore. I do not feel like swimming,” answered Alexa.The three girls consumed their coffee and left. Daniel and Synthia were

left alone inside the cottage again.“What do you want to do now? I have some things here that can help us

make time fly faster. I brought my PS2 here. I also have some DVDs here. Wecan watch some movies. We can play those on my laptop,” Daniel said.

“Sorry. I do not play games like those and I don't feel like watching amovie right now.” Synthia stood and walked towards her bag. She pulled outher iPod Touch. “I am just going to continue reading ebooks.” She left him andwent to her bed.

“Okay. I will just be here if you want to go out and have a little walk. I am just going to watch some movies,” Daniel said even though he knew she's notlistening.

The sun was about to set when Synthia went outside to have a walk alongthe shore. Daniel accompanied her.

“Danny, do you think I will find love better than the last I had a monthago?” Synthia suddenly asked.

“Why? What went wrong with that of your last relationship with another guy?” He looked so puzzled because he did not have an idea about Synthia'slast lovelife.

She stopped walking and sat. The waves were touching her feet. “Lastmonth, I was not fully aware that my boyfriend and my bestfriend were bothcheating on me because they're going out with each other until I saw him kissher when they thought I was outside of the house.”

He stopped walking and faced Synthia. “If that is what happened, then Iam certain that you will find a much better love than you had with him. It's notyou who made the wrong decision. They made the wrong decision of makingyou sad like this,” Daniel replied. “You are the easiest person to love. Theydon't know that the smiles they took away from you are worth more than all thediamonds you can have in this world.”



The following day, they went back to the cottage and had some breakfast.Daniel gave a cup of coffee to Synthia who was sitting under a tree.

“Thank you.” She took the cup from Daniel. “I thought about what yousaid last night.”

“What about what I've said?” Daniel asked, playing dumb.“You told me that I should find a way to move on from the previous

relationship with that good-for-nothing ex-boyfriend of mine. You made merealize that I am in control of my own life and it does not revolve around him.”

Daniel smiled. “That's right. I am happy to hear that from you. He's a jerk with nothing better to do than do those stupid things.”

Mina walked toward them and handed Daniel two plates of pancakes.“Jenna and Martin betrayed you. I knew that we couldn't let them be entrusted

with your heart and friendship! The only thing that kept us from separatingthem from you is that you looked very happy with them.”“You should have told about them earlier than to see it myself,” Synthia

said.“I do not think you will believe them even if they told you. It would be

very easy to deny them since there was no evidence unless they were able totake a picture that proves their unworthyness,” Daniel answered and left the twogirls alone and went back inside the cottage.

Lara caught him still staring at Synthia from the inside.

“Do you really love her?” Lara asked.“Yeah. I've been in love with her ever since I met her. I thought it was

only puppy love and it will go away. But when I went to live in London, Irealized it's not. She's always in my head. Every single day that I was abroad,she's the one I've been wanting to see. She is the real reason I talked to my

parents to go back here to study in college,” he replied. “I wanted to see her every day I can.”

“Why don't you tell her that now?” Lara took a little sip from the cup of tea she's holding.

“She's still undergoing the stage of healing her broken heart. I don't wantto take advantage of that. What she needs right now is a friend to help her getherself together,” Daniel said.

While Daniel and Lara were talking, they did not know that Synthia waslooking at them through the window.

“The two of them look so good together,” Synthia told Mina as she was



staring at Daniel and Lara.“You do not know how wrong you are. You and Daniel look so much

better together. In fact, the two of you look so perfect for each other,” Laraobjected.

Synthia blushed.Lara noticed her blushing. “Do you like him?”“Yes, I like him but he told me that he already have a girl holding her

hand and the reaon he's back. I do not think I am that girl,” Synthia said. Shestood up and walked along the shore, leaving her plate on the log where she sat.

Mina let out a sigh. “She really is clueless about what's going on even if it's already in front of her.”

Friday came and they started packing everything they brought. Daniel and

Lara became close to each other because Daniel has been asking for ome piecesof advice from her on how to court Synthia even though he knew that he's tooshy to do all those things she's been saying.

Synthia noticed their closeness and felt a little jealous but refused toadmit it to the others.

By the time they've all gone home, Alexa went up to Synthia's room.“You still have two days left before classes start. Do like to go to the mall

tomorrow for some new clothes?” Alexa asked.Synthia shook her head. “I still have some clothes I haven't worn yet.”

“Okay.” Alexa sat beside her. “Do you like Daniel? If ever he ask you to be his girlfriend, does he have a chance?”

Synthia was blushing. “Why are you asking such thing? It's obvious thatit's not possible. I could tell that Daniel likes Lara. They were spending most of their time together within the past few days we're in the beach. I do not want toruin our friendship and be like Jenna.”

The next day, Daniel went to Synthia's house. Unfortunately, Synthia wasnot home.

“Where is she?” Daniel asked. “I want to give her these flowers and tellher how I really feel.”

“She's been out with some friends. They went to her friend's birthday party. I do not know what time she'll be arriving. Maybe you should come back later. I'll call you if she's here already,” Alexa replied.

Daniel put down the flowers on the table. “No. Just give her these flowerswhen she's back. Don't tell her that I am the one who gave it to her. I want to



tell her I love her myself.”“Okay.” Alexa picked the flowers up and went up to Synthia's room and

laid it on her bed as Daniel paced out the door.But before he could grab the doorknob and leave, Alexa caught up with

him.“Why are you not going to wait for her? Aren't you going to tell her that

you have been in love with her ever since you were just little?”“I do not think I can do this,” he answered. “I am very nervous. If she

arrives here and finds out that those flowers are from me, I think I'll be frozento death! I just can't tell her. I really can't.”

“Okay. It's your choice. I cannot force you to tell her if you really are notready. And besides, I do not want to be the one to tell her because it would be somuch better if it comes from your own lips.”

Daniel slightly smiled at her and left.On his way out the gate, he saw Synthia walking towards his direction.She waved at him.

“It's nice for you to drop by. What were you doing here?”“Nothing,” He lied. “I just talked to your sister about something. See you

later. I got to go now.”He hurriedly ran through the door and straight inside his car.His head was on the steering wheel. “Why can't I do it? Why can't I say it

straight to her face? Why is it all the time I see her, my lips cannot move to say

the words I want to?”

The first day of classes came and Daniel fetched Synthia on his way toschool so that they could go there together. He was hoping that by this time, hewould have courage to tell her the truth.

But by the time she was sitting beside him, it's all the same. It was like histongue was frozen and he's shaking from head to toe.

When they arrived at the university, Synthia just thanked him andimmediately left. He wanted to run to her just to tell her what he really wasfeeling towards her but his feet won't move and he knew he was lackingcourage.

He just kept looking at her walk away and time dissolved in his mind. Butthen he was startled by Mina and Lara who took her by surprise.

“Let us guess.” Mina started. “You still haven't told her yet. Am I notright?”



Daniel let out a sigh. “I cannot seem to find courage to do it. Everytime Isee her, it's like my lips are sealed or won't move to say the words I want themto.”

“You better do it fast because with her charm, we won't be surprised if shegets to have a new boyfriend by Friday. Don't count on her being single for along time, Dan.” Lara tapped his shoulder and pulled Mina and walked.

After classes, Mina, Lara and Daniel were sitting on stone chairs under atree in the school campus when they saw Synthia running towards them. Sheseemed to be very happy and couldn't wait to share something.

Daniel noticed Synthia was holding a rose on her right hand and a pieceof paper on the other.

“Judging by what I can see, it seems someone got an ' I love you ' note”,

Lara said. “So, who's the guy?”Synthia could not stop smiling and blushing. “These are from Miggy. Hegave it to me personally when the four of you left.”

“Wow. I think I sense a broken heart healing”, Mina laughed.“I think he's kinda cute too.” She was still blushing.Lara and Mina looked at Daniel at the same time then looked back at

Synthia.“He asked me if I could go out with him on Friday and I said yes,”

Synthia kept on.

“That's wonderful! I am so happy for you!” Daniel drew a fake smile onhis face.

“Wait for me for a few minutes. I want us to go to the mall later. I will justgo inside. I'll be talking to someone,” Synthia said. She rushed off to the

building.“See what we wanted you to do?” Lara shouted at Daniel.“You had the upper hand and you let it slip off your fingers!” Mina

continued. “Now you are going to suffer the regret of not telling her how youreally feel for her! You'd be wishing you're in his place.”

“She already agreed about going out with him. Sooner or later, we'll beseeing them announcing that they are officially boyfriend and girlfriend!” Laraadded.

“If she's happy, I think I no longer care. I am ready to suffer for her happiness,” Daniel answered.

“You could have been the reason of her hapiness that she's feeling right



now! You stand better chances against any guy in this country because you'veearned it since the day you've been friends!”

“It doesn't matter to me anymore who can cause her happiness as long asshe has it,” Daniel replied.

“You're wasting your chances,” Lara sighed.

Daniel drove Synthia home before 6:30. Both were very quiet on their way to her house. Synthia was text messaging Miggy. Daniel could not sayanything. He felt jealous of Miggy.

When they're in front of Synthia's house, the silence was broken.“Thank you, Daniel.”“It's nothing. It's no big deal,” Daniel answered.Synthia opened the gate and went in. “You better go home now.”

“Okay. Goodnight.” Daniel entered his car and drove away.Meanwhile, inside her house, Alexa was waiting for her.“Mina texted me that a guy named Miggy asked you out. Would you

assure that he's not like the previous one?” Alexa asked.“Alexa, you don't need to worry. Miggy doesn't seem like the kind of guy

who will do such thing. He's not like whoever you are thinking. Do not worry. Iwill introduce him to you soon enough. I am sure that once you meet him, youwill not object about him being a potential boyfriend.” She quickly pacedupstairs to rest I her room.

Alexa dialed Daniel's number on her phone.“You've wasted your chances! She's thinking of agreeing to be that

Miggy's girlfriend! If you want her to be yours, tell her now before it's toolate!”

“I don't want her, I love her! There's a big difference between that. I wanther to be happy with whoever she's happy to be with. She seems so happy withthat guy so I won't intervene with that.”

“You are such a stupid guy. The opportunity was right in front of you for avery long time and yet you rejected it!”

“If we're meant to be, we'll be. I think I will let fate decide our relationship's direction,” Daniel said calmly. “I got to go. I'm still driving.”

He hang up.

The following week, while Daniel, Mina, Lara and Synthia were takingtheir snacks in a restaurant, Synthia got a text message.



“It's Miggy. He told me to go to Manila Bay. He wants to give mesomething.”

Daniel drove her to the bay. Mina and Lara tagged along with them.When they arrived at the place, Synthia hurriedly got out of the car. A

little boy came to her and handed a rose with a note attached to it. On one sideof the note, a big letter S was printed. On the other side, it was telling her tofollow the people with red roses.

She followed what was said to the note and followed all the people withred roses she noticed staring at her. As she was passing by them, they're handingher the roses they were holding.

Synthia noticed that the letters attached to the roses spelled her name. Shealready had the first six letters of her name. She's trying to find the person withthe last letter.

It was almost sunset but she still could not find the only one left. Shestarted to text message Daniel and the others to wait for a little longer.Tired of looking for the last one, she sat facing the sunset. All the sudden,

she heard a romantic music behind her. Someone was playing a guitar.She turned around and saw Miggy with the last rose.Miggy knelt in front of her and said, “Ms. Synthia, would you be my

girlfriend?”Synthia was speechless. She was filled with joy. She cried out of

happiness. Words couldn't come out of her so she just projected a smile and

nod.Miggy was jumping up and down with joy.Synthia dragged Miggy and went back to Daniel's car.“I want you to meet my boyfriend.”“Boyfriend?” Mina and Lara asked in chorus.Synthia nodded with a smile and hugged Miggy.“Would it be alright with all of you if I borrow this lovely angel and take

her on a date?” Miggy asked.“We don't mind. We'll just tell Alexa about your date,” Daniel answered.“Thank you, Dan.” He held Synthia's hand and they all immediately left.

Daniel arrived at Synthia's house and told Alexa about Synthia.“What do you expect? You know that she's a bit naïve when it comes to

love. She can easily fall for any guy courting her as long as he's sweet andfriendly to her.”



Daniel sighed.“Hey! Don't feel that way. It's your fault anyway. You let this happen.

Opportunity was in front of you but you let it go.”“I am just going to watch over her and make sure that he's not going to

hurt her.”“Well, do what you want for her because there's not much of a choice for

you now that she's his girlfriend.”The following day, they went swimming in Laguna. Synthia, Miggy,

Daniel, Mina, Lara and Alexa seemed to be having so much fun at a beach.“Thea, let's go ride a boat. I want to reach the middle of the sea,” he said

while cuddling Synthia.Synthia put her head on Miggy's shoulder. “I do not think I want to. I've

always been afraid of going above very deep places.”

“Do not worry. I'll be beside you. I won't let anything happen to you,”Miggy smiled.Synthia smiled back and went to ride a boat with Miggy.Daniel kept her eyes on Synthia.“You could have been the one in his position if only you told her what

you really feel for her,” Alexa said.Mina added, “I think we all know that you're jealousy is too obvious right

now.”“I will just let them. If we are meant to be with each other, fate will play

its part.”Lara sighed. “Fate will not play its part if you won't play yours. You have

to tell your true feelings first before fate enters the scene. If she's not going toknow, no development will ever happen between you and my sister.”

“Alexa is right. You need to tell her all about how you feel for her,” Minaagreed.

Daniel kept his eyes on Synthia. “I'm going back to the cottage. I want tocatch some sleep.”

“You don't need sleep right now. What you need is how to escape thesight of the two cuddling each other,” Mina whispered.

“I am willing to let her go if she's very happy with him. I cannot bear seeing her cry,” he answered.

“You have not tried to ask her about her feelings for you and neither didyou say to her yours about her. How could you expect her to come to you andtell you she loves you? You're not even trying to do the first move!” Lara yelled



at him.“Don't yell. She'll hear what we're talking about,” Daniel pleaded.“If ever she hears us, then it's better.” Mina walked out and back to their

cottage.“I am sorry. I just could not find the strength to do it. I lack the courage as

well.”“Don't be apologizing to us. You should be apologizing to yourself

because it's not us you turned down, it's your own heart.” Lara followed Mina.“I am not going to yell at you like the others. I understand,” Alexa said. “I

know you value your friendship with my sister, but don't you think your feelings for her are worth risking it?”

“If she'll accept my love for her, I am terrified that I might hurt her oneday and leave her because I won't be able to love her like I am doing now. I am

afraid I might hurt her someday.”“If you really love her, you won't let that happen. Am I right?”She saw Daniel nod.She continued. “We all do not know what the future holds for us. But

even though, we should do what we think is best for the moment so there will be no regret in the future.”

Time went by and Synthia and Miggy were growing closer and closer toeach other until Daniel felt left out.

Daniel and Synthia used to eat lunch together with Mina and Lara, butshe started spending time with Miggy so she became seldom in joining them.

Daniel couldn't help but just stare at the couple as they share laughtersand sweet whispers. He fel jealousy burning inside him furiously. He wanted toexplode but couldn't because he knew that she's very happy with him and hehad no right to do so for the reason that she's only his best friend.

All the things Daniel was feeling were very transparent in the eyes of Alexa, Mina and Lara.

One night, at Synthia's house, Daniel visited Alexa so they could have alittle talk.

“I know you envy Miggy, but it's your fault. You could have been doingwhat he's doing with her. You had the biggest chance and you let it pass. Youand my sister should have been a very perfect couple.”

“What's done is done. We cannot undo it, unlike the programs in acomputer. Do not drown me with guilt because I can manage it to be worse than



what you are making me feel.”Daniel saw Synthia entering the gate. She stopped by the flowers to touch

them for a while. She was smiling. Then she continued heading for the door.She immediately noticed Daniel. “Hey, Daniel! You're here! It's been a

little while since your last visit.”Daniel did not say anything and just gave a little bow.Synthia hurriedly went upstairs and changed.While Synthia was changing, they carried on with their conversation.“I am going to tell her soon. I do not want to keep it any longer than the

end of the semester. I think I am going to explode when I keep this feeling all tomyself.”

Daniel looked at his watch. “I got to go. It's getting a little late.”“Okay. Thank you for visiting,” Alexa said.

Daniel was halfway through the door when he saw Synthia coming downfrom her room.“You're going already?”“Yeah. It's getting a little late. I have to complete the project we have

that's due tomorrow.”“Oh, alright. Be careful on your way home.”As Daniel was driving his way home, his phone rang.“Hello, Daniel?”“Mom? Why did you call?”

“Your father is sick. He's in the hospital. There's no one else to run the business so we need you to come back here to run it.”

“Is that so? Can you run the business for a little while before I get there?It's almost the end of the first semester already. I want to finish this semester

before I come back there.”“Okay. I understand. As soon as you finish this entire semester, you will

fly back to London.”“I will, Mom. Goodbye. I need to go. I'm driving right now.”“Bye, sweetie. Take good care of yourself.”Daniel panicked in silence. He's wondering what will happen now that

he'll be flying back to London after the semester.The next day, while Daniel was walking down the park, he saw Miggy

with another girl. He followed them. They sat on a bench near a stand where icecream was being sold.

Daniel did not know what got to him and suddenly ran towards Miggy



“How could you say that?”“I'm flying back to London tomorrow. I'm needed there. My father is sick

and there's no one else that could run our business but me. I'd only cause her pain if I tell her and leave soon.”

Miggy punched Daniel in the face. “So you are leaving her and going tomake the same mistake like you did when you were in elementary?! You are themost cowardly person I have ever known!”

Daniel just walked out and did not say anything more.Miggy went straight to Synthia's house immediately. He made up his

mind to tell her about Daniel's feelings for her if he's not going to tell it himself.“Oh, come in. I was just making some mango tarts. Sit down. I will call

Synthia. Wait for a moment,” Alexa warmly said.“Thank you. I really need to speak to her about something.”

She went upstairs to call Synthia.A few moments later, Synthia rushed down the stairs.“You want to tell me something?”“Yes. It's about Daniel.”“What about him?”“He's in love with you ever since you were in grade school, Synthia. But

the thing is, he's afraid to tell you about it. I told him to tell you that but hedoesn't like to. He said that since you are my girlfriend now, it's okay for her togive up. He wants you to be happy without even thinking if he could be too.”

He continued.“All I want to know is if you also feel the same way for him. I want you to be honest with me.”

Synthia did not know what to say. She could not say that she's not also inlove with Daniel because Miggy was her boyfriend.

Miggy sensed her hesitation. “If you love him, tell me. I won't be angry.All I wish for you is your happiness even if it's not with me.”

Tears flowed down Synthia's cheeks. “Thank you.” Synthia hugged him.“I am willing to let you go if your heart belongs to another. That is how

much I love you.” Miggy smiled and left.

The last day of the semester came. Synthia was looking for Daniel but didnot find him.

“I forgot to tell you that he told me he's flying back to London,” Miggysaid.

“What?!”



They hurried to Daniel's house but he's no longer there. The caretaker of the house told them he already left for his flight back to London and gave theairport where he'll be taking the plane.

Daniel was waiting for his plane when he heard someone calling his namefrom not very far from his post. He looked around and found Synthia.

“Why didn't you tell me that you're going back to London?! You're planning on repeating what you did years ago? And why where you so afraid of telling me you love me? Didn't you even think that I could be in love with youtoo?!”

Daniel was surprised with what she said.“I liked you ever since we were elementary students. I realized that the

day you flew to London without even telling me. You always help me with

everything you can. You were always there for me. Are you just going to makethe same mistake you did years ago?”“You seem so happy with Miggy so I've decided not to tell you at all. I'll

be leaving in a minute now and I'm not sure when I'll be back. I am not sure if I'll even see you again when I get back. I might be there for a year. I do notthink you'll be able to wait for that long.”

She gave him a smile. “I was able to wait for you for five years. I'mcertain I could wait for you for a year more.”

He pulled Synthia closer to him and kissed her side of her lips. “Okay. I'll

be back after one year. Let's meet at the park under the tree where we used to sittogether as you tell me everything when we were younger.”

They heard Daniel's plane being announced.“That's my plane. I better go.”Synthia hugged him. “I will wait for you after one year exactly at around

11:15 a.m.”“I will. I promise.” He kissed her forehead and bade goodbye.

It's been almost a year when Daniel flew back to London. Synthia went tothe park where they agreed to meet again. She sat on the bench under the treethat will soon be their meeting place. It's a nice sunset. The setting sun wasreflected by the water of the pond near her.

Alexa caught up with her. “He won't be here yet. You're too excited to seehim again.”



Miggy was right behind them, catching his breath. “Yeah. Ever since theday after he flew back to London, you've been coming back here in this exactspot every single day.”

Synthia giggled lightly. “I've been waiting for the day to come ever sincethat promise from Daniel. I come here everyday so that I will always remember that I am in love with him and he'll come back to me a year after he went back to London so there is no reason for me to look for another guy.”

“I wish I could have a girlfriend just like you someday,” Miggy said.“Don't worry, Miggy. There's someone out there who will soon love you

like Synthia does to Daniel,” Alexa replied.Miggy sighed. “I hope so. If there is such a girl for me, I pray to know her

as soon as possible. I envy Daniel who has such a loyal girl that is Synthia.”Alexa and Synthia laughed.

“Shall we go home now? You need to get enough sleep. Tomorrow will bethe day you'll be meeting again. You do not want to look tired and worn outtomorrow, do you?” Alexa said.

Miggy drove them home.When they arrived at Alexa's house, Miggy stayed for a while for a chat.“Do you want to go shopping tomorrow so you could look prepared when

you meet again? Come on. I will buy you a dress for tomorrow. We'll go to themall tomorrow and I will buy you the dress that you'd like most among all thestores,” Miggy said.

Synthia blushed. “You do not need to do that. I can buy a dress for myself tomorrow. Save your money for the time that I'll be broke.”

“No, I insist. I'd like my friend to look her best. I want to help even for alittle. I know, being a daughter of a very successful businessman, you will notrun out of money so easily, so I want to buy you even just a dress.”

“If you really want to, okay then.”Miggy drove them to the mall and bought Synthia a beautiful purple dress

of satin.“You look so beautiful in that dress,” Mina said.Miggy smiled. “I beg to disagree.”Synthia got angry. “What?!”“You don't look beautiful in that dress because you are beautiful just the

way you are even in any dress you choose. It's not the dress that is making you beautiful, it's you that is making the dress beautiful.”

Synthia blushed. “Thank you.”



While they were waiting for Miggy's credit card, Alexa approachedMiggy.

“You still love my sister, don't you?”“Unfortunately, I am still in love with Synthia. I just can't get over that

smile she gives me everytime we meet. My heart leaps with joy whenever I seethat smile.”

“It's been a year now. Don't you think it's about time you look for another girl for you?”

Miggy shook his head. “I don't think my heart could love another rightnow. I could just end up hurting someone because my heart is still for Synthia.I'm not asking her to love me back. I am happy just seeing her smile at meknowing I can make her happy even as a friend.”

“Thank you for loving my sister even if you know she is in love with

someone else.”“I know how Daniel was feeling when he cannot express to the girl heloves his feelings, especially if she's your bestfriend. I once fell in love with my

bestfriend too. But sadly, she loves anothter guy so I had to let her go and behappy because it's the only way left to show her how much I really love her.”

“I'm sure you will find that special girl just for you and will love you theway you do.”

“I hope so. But it won't be anytime soon. I want to be beside Synthia nomatter what. I want to take care of her. If my love for her will fade, I would like

it to be faded by time, not because I tried to replace her with another. Replacingnever works. Whenever you see her, the feeling will always be there if you trythat.”

It was already 6:30 when they were finished with the shopping. Miggydrove all of them to their houses.

“Goodnight,” Miggy said as he pulled open the door to let Synthia out.“Goodnight to you too. Thank you for the dress and the ride home,”

Synthia replied.“It's no big of a deal. I'm happy to help you in any kind of way I can.”

The next day, Synthia had been preparing herself since 7:18 in themorning for the thing she's been anticipating for a year. She could not decidewhat shoes, earrings, make up and hairstyle to wear.

“Synthia, stop pacing back and forth in your room. It's very early and Ican aready hear your feet stomping. I don't think how you look matters to him. I



think coming as simple as you are will do,” Alexa said irritatingly.“I do not know what to do. I am panicking. It will be our first meeting

after a year and I want to look presentable.”“You look perfect just as you are. Just fix your hair, get dressed, put a

light make-up and you're good to go. You don't need to look like you're going toa disco party or something. So you don't need to panic, Synthia.”

“Okay. You're right.” Synthia took a deep breath. “I will just wear thedress Miggy bought me yesterday, put a little make-up and simple accessories.”

At exactly 11:00, she was already there waiting. She came early with thethought of him being there already before 11:15 strikes. So wrong she was tothink so. No one was there. The spot was empty. She sat on the bench under thetree where they were to meet.

A hour and a half already passed by after the time they agreed upon but

there was still no sight of Daniel.“Maybe he just forgot the time we agreed to meet and thought it was 2:00.Very well then, I will wait for him a little longer,” Synthia said to herself.

By the time her watch stroke 3:00, she fell asleep.She awoke when a heavy rain fell. It was already 5:00. It was already

dark. She started to cry. Her dress and make-up were already ruined.She sudden felt an umbrella above her. Then came a guy's hand on her

shoulder.“Daniel?”

She turned her head. And to her great dismay, it was not Daniel who wasgiving her cover from the rain. It was Miggy.

“I am truly sorry if Daniel was not able to come. I'm sure there is a goodexplanation to all of these pain he inflicted upon you.”

“Or maybe he just doesn't love me anymore and chose to make me look stupid all by myself intead of telling me face to face. Take the umbrella awayfrom me. I want to fell the rain and hope it will make me feel any better as it

pours upon me, washing my tears.”“If that's what you want, I won't stop you.” Miggy sat beside her. He

threw his umbrella away. “But I am not going to let you do it on your own. I amhere for you. I will always be here no matter what happens.” He took her handand held it tight.

She hugged him. “Thank you.”And they stayed there until the rain stopped.
