…to the April issue of Love Saltash magazine. As well as pulling together exciting new community information and chatting to lots of local shops and businesses, we’ve been busy developing our social enterprise projects. In our primary schools’ Magazine Enterprise Zone, which has been running since January, the children have been learning enterprise and magazine writing skills. We’ve had some lively discussions about community issues and I’ve been inspired by their vibrancy, ideas, and creativity! Our budding reporters recently interviewed the Mayor Cllr Jean Dent and researched a Regatta feature at Saltash Heritage Museum (thank you to both parties for accommodating us so well). You will be able to see the results of their hard work in the May and June issues of Love Saltash.

A highlight of this month’s issue is our Election Special, which features all the parliamentary candidates for South East Cornwall. Each political

party was invited to connect directly with Love Saltash readers on the topics of Education, Jobs and Health. We hope you find the locally relevant way the parties are advertising their campaigns, through the magazine, interesting and informative. We have some great young people’s artwork in Saltash Scene. Finally, our Out & About section brings you a new month of eclectic inspiration for activities to get involved with in and around our buzzing town.

Have a fantastic Easter!

COMMUNITY MATTERS

Welcome in Spring at the

Saltash Lions Mayfair weekend, which kicks off on Saturday 2 May at Warfelton Field. This long-running, popular event opens for 2015 on the Saturday with the Town’s Parade of Youth and the Town Mayor’s Speech. As well as a new layout of stalls this year, events in the arena include a dog show run by Gables Farm Cats & Dogs Home, and It’s a knockout Competition for youth groups. On the Sunday, the Saltash Half Marathon and the Fun Run will take place. For more information, see www.saltashlions.org.uk and the Saltash Lions Facebook page. If you would like to help out over the weekend as a volunteer, or to sign up a youth group for It’s a knockout, email the Chairman [email protected] for more details.

In Brief

The oldest building in Saltash,

Mary Newman’s Cottage,

is open again to view from Wednesday 8 April.

Dating from around 1480, this historic building

and its beautiful gardens on Culver Road will be

open on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and

Sundays between 12 and 4pm.

Elliotts Grocery Store also opens for 2015 with a new exhibition The

Waterloo Campaign 1815 from 8 April. For more

information see the tamarprotectionsociety

.org.uk and museumsincornwall.org.uk websites.

Help to make Saltash an even lovelier, cleaner place by joining in the on the fourth Sunday of each month. This valuable joint venture between Saltash Environmental Action (SEA) and Saltash Town Council is supported by Devon Contract Waste, who ensure that the rubbish collected does not go to landfill sites. The next Litter Pick is Sunday 26 April, from 2pm in Pillmere. Litter picker tools are provided, so just bring your own gloves and meet at Pillmere Green.

The Maurice Huggins Room

is under new management following a successful

three-month trial ’relaunch’. Community Enterprises

PL12 is now running the building on behalf of the

Town Council. Subject to availability, bookings can

be made via the Community Market at 4 Fore Street

on (01752) 848348.

nominations are open for this year’s Saltash Citizen and Saltash Young Citizen Awards. Each year, Saltash Town Council and the Rotary Club select an adult and an under-21-year-old who have made a significant difference to their town – on a one-off or ongoing basis. To nominate someone you know who lives in Saltash (and is not an employee or member of Saltash Town Council), send your recommendation explaining why that person deserves special recognition, to the Town Clerk, Mr Ray Lane, The Guildhall, 12 Lower Fore Street, Saltash or by email to [email protected] by Monday 13 April.

Passenger numbers must increase if the

Saltash Hopper Bus is to continue. The community bus is available for hire for one-off or regular runs, and can carry wheelchairs alongside seated passengers. Bus ‘champions’ are urgently needed to help increase use within the PL12 area and beyond. Please contact the bus manager on (01752) 848348 to get a quote for a trip, or to join the bus volunteer team.

Community Litter Picks

Each year in Spring, the Council votes for a new Mayor-elect, who is then officially confirmed at

Mayor Choosing in May. The new Mayor-elect is Cllr Bill Phillips, who has served this year as Deputy Mayor to Cllr Jean Dent. The Deputy Mayor-elect for the coming year is Cllr Hilary Frank. Mayor Choosing in Saltash is a fascinating tradition, which involves the new Mayor and his or her Consort tossing warm pennies and fruit to Saltash children in the street below the window of the Guildhall Chamber. Come and join in the fun this year on Tuesday 12 May at 7pm outside Saltash Guildhall.

As part of Groundwork’s Treasured Spaces scheme, trees have recently been planted at

Saltmill Park. A beautiful outdoor space for socialising is in development, with the arrival of four barbeque pits and six large family picnic tables. Still to come is the installation of a bird hide and feeding area overlooking the brook and river junction, and a ‘nature zone’ including a giant bug hotel. For news and developments, keep an eye on the Saltmill Park Facebook page.

At a recent meeting hosted by Patient Participation Groups from Port View Surgery and the Health Centre,

Dementia Sufferers and Carers were invited to discuss their needs with dementia service professionals. It is hoped that this forum will lead to a new dementia initiative in the town, to improve access to help and to increase awareness of the condition.

4

“Oh Yay Oh Yay!” The Town Crier requires a Consort to accompany him when he attends Town Crying Competitions and Saltash civic events. Brian Whipp, who has won many prizes for the town over the last eight years, has five competitions lined up from May onwards. No previous experience is needed - the main duties are escorting the Town Crier and holding the bell whilst he is ‘crying’, and holding the scroll whilst he is ‘parading’. There is no pay, but expenses are provided, including meals at competition events. A three-piece blue costume is provided for the successful Consort. To express interest and find out more, please contact Brian on (01752) 843002 before the end of April.

Did you know that in Medieval England, town criers were the chief means of news communication with the townspeople, since many were illiterate in a period before printed communication was invented.

Also, check out our new Spring & Summer range, in store now! XTHE ELECTION SPECIALWith only a month now to go until the General Election, Love Saltash magazine has invited all of our parliamentary hopefuls to make their pledges directly to you, the Saltash public, on three key issues. We challenged each of the candidates for our South East Cornwall seat to set out their promises on Education, Jobs and Health to provide an understanding of their positions in these three central political spheres.

We are delighted that all six of the candidates standing for election took up the opportunity to speak on these issues. The following pages feature their responses on the topics proposed. Having provided a clear brief that this platform was to be used to assert the candidates’ own priorities and positions, and not to attack opposition parties, we hope the accounts given provide you with a positive insight into what each prospective MP stands for, and a valuable understanding of what each would do if elected.

Voting for the people who represent us in government is critical to the health of our democracy – and a right that not everyone around the world can enjoy. And when we remember that it is less than 100 years ago that the Suffragette movement secured the vote for women in Britain, it’s clear that even here, universal voting rights are a relatively recent privilege that should be protected.

With this political engagement so important in giving us a say on what decisions are made on our behalf, we offer our sincere appreciation to all the South East Cornwall candidates for choosing to promote their campaign in Love Saltash magazine. We hope that this communication helps add to the information you need to decide who you want to stand up for our corner of the country come election day on 7 May.

QUIZ THE CANDIDATESHustings debates in the run up to the election provide a great opportunity to watch the election candidates in live political debate and to pose your own questions. For South East Cornwall, a hustings event is being run by BBC Radio Cornwall on Wednesday 8 April at the Liskerrett Centre in Liskeard with Laurence Reed in the chair (6.30pm for a 7pm start; register by contacting [email protected]). Cornwall College's hustings event will be held in Saltash at the Learning Zone on Tuesday 14 April (6.30pm for a 7pm start; register free at www.cornwall.ac.uk/hustings).

MAKE YOURSELF KNOWNIf you’re not already registered to vote, you’ll need to do so by 20 April to have your say at this year’s general election. You can register online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote. If you would prefer a paper application form, you can request one from Cornwall Council Electoral Services. Contact them on 0300 1231 115, at [email protected] or by post at: St Austell One Stop Shop, 39 Penwinnick Road, St Austell, Cornwall PL25 5DR. They can also tell you whether you’re already registered to vote if you’re unsure or arrange a postal vote.

X MARKS THE SPOTIf you’re registered and eligible to vote, you’ll receive a poll card by post before the General Election. Simply take this along with you (although you can vote without it), to your local polling station which will be detailed on the card. There, your ballot paper will be issued and you can have your say. Polling stations are open from 7am until 10pm on Thursday 7 May.

MARTIN CORNEYI am Martin Corney, standing in the general election for the Green Party and South East Cornwall. I live near Liskeard in Cornwall, and since I retired from Devonport Dockyard I have thrown myself into local community projects: Vice Chair of my parish council, Youth Club Treasurer and volunteer, Foodbank volunteer, Growing Project volunteer, and Saltash Environmental Action volunteer. I can be seen pictured herew (farthest left) helping plant trees at Saltmill Park recently with Saltash Environmental Action. I also enjoy being a Friend of Churchtown Farm with the stunning walks they organise on the Cornwall Wildlife Trust nature reserve to the south of Saltash. I even help tidy up the litter.

A new Cornish Assembly would allow us to control our own education policy. Like the Welsh and Scots, we could then reduce tuition fees for Cornish students. When I was a student my university education was free. A Green central government would also restore things to be like they were, better for students.

EDUCATION

The jobs situation is bad. I knew that Cornwall was the poorest area in the UK, but South East Cornwall is the worst poverty wages area, with more jobs below the living wage than all other constituencies in the South West. The Green Party can fix this in at least three ways: Stop austerity cuts, Minimum wage of £10 an hour by 2020, and a Cornish Assembly, with initial powers similar to the Welsh Assembly, so we can run our own affairs locally. We can then get our European money directly, instead of having it held back in London.

jOBS

I believe passionately in protecting our NHS from privatisation and recently could be seen on the streets of Saltash gathering signatures for a petition to save our health service. Having spent quite a bit of time taking friends to and around Derriford, I know that the NHS isn’t perfect, but we mustn’t let the NHS be sold off. This is another thing that a Cornish Assembly would control.

Promoted by Steve Angove on behalf of Mid and East Cornwall Green Party and Martin Corney all at 49 Old Well Gardens, Penryn, Cornwall TR10 9LF.

HEALTH

EDUCATIONLocally I am really pleased that our schools don’t just get good results, but also excel at promoting a sense of community, and educating the whole child. Nationally I passionately support both the Pupil Premium, which must be protected and extended, and the free school meals for all, recently introduced in our primary schools. These Lib Dem initiatives help to ensure a level playing field for all young people. I also support the Lib Dem pledge that every child should have the right to be taught by a qualified teacher.

In the future we must protect education funding from cuts, including the post-16 funding essential to maintain our strong local Sixth Forms. I would also like to see more government investment in the facilities at local schools. Locally we are fortunate to have a great secondary school and college, and several good primary schools, and we must enable them to keep their success going.

JOBSI believe that this follows on from education – having given our young people the education they deserve, we must ensure that decent jobs are there at the end. Too many young people have to move away to find well paid work, and as the father of a teenage son this is something that I personally feel very strongly about.

As your MP I would work with local business to attract more good jobs to the area, but I would also work for fair treatment of all workers. I am against regional pay, which would mean that hard working public sector workers in Cornwall would be paid less than in other parts of

the country. I also believe that those businesses and organisations who can afford it should pay the living wage. Saltash Town Council has recently decided to do this and they are to be congratulated for it.

HEALTHI am a strong supporter of the NHS, and have great admiration for the job that all of our healthcare workers do. We must protect funding for our NHS, but also need to put more resources into tackling mental health: this is an area that currently doesn’t get enough attention.

I also believe in the importance of community care – as a social worker for over 20 years I understand how much of a difference it can make to be cared for near your home. As such I would fight for all services at St Barnabas hospital in Saltash to be protected so that it can continue to serve the needs of local people.

Declan LloydI will be a new kind of politician if elected. I am passionate about getting a good deal for the people of South East Cornwall and I will fight for an NHS that is properly resourced, schools where every child gets a good education and increased job opportunities with a living wage. As your local MP I would be accountable to you – I will vote for the recall bill where constituencies would be able get rid of MPs who are not working for them. I was brought up and live in the constituency and believe I understand what is important to local people. I will make sure that the voice of South East Cornwall is heard.

EducationI believe good education is the right of every child and young person. Going to a good school should not be based on your ability to pay but is a fundamental right. I will vote for a limit to class sizes. Further education should not bankrupt our future generations – I will vote for a reduction in university tuition fees.

JobsIn this area many people are on low wages – some of the lowest in the country. People are not seeing signs of recovery. I will fight for an increase in the minimum wage and the move to a living wage. I will also fight to make sure the richest pay their fair share of tax so that we can fund the things we need most. Locally, thousands of people are on the housing list. Private rents soaring above wages force people to survive on housing benefit that goes directly to landlords. As your Labour MP I will vote to: build more social housing; give us power to build the homes we need, where we need them; control private rents & protect tenants from rip off fees and short tenancies.

HealthOur health service is something we should be very proud of. But the NHS is on its knees, at breaking point. It should not be used as a political football – it needs more resources. We don’t need more restructures. We need more doctors and nurses. I support the Labour party pledge to recruit 23,000 more nurses and midwives and 8,000 GPs.

Andrew LongEducationEducating our young is one of the most important parts of society. The chronic underfunding of Cornwall’s young people by Westminster needs to be reversed. One of the deciding factors when new businesses start up or move to a new location is the availability of educated workers. We have, in Cornwall, an amazing set of Teachers, Heads and governors and even more incredible students. We need to have an education system that meets the needs for today and is future-proofed for the day when the economy in the Duchy does improve. At Mebyon Kernow we are opposed to the further fracturing of the education system and would like to see a solid local Education board running our schools and colleges and a Cornish Education Curriculum that teaches all aspects of life including Cornish History and Language.

JobsSuccessive Governments in Westminster have failed to kick start the Cornish Economy. We have the lowest wages in the UK and are bottom of the 37 NUTS2 regions of Britain as far as Gross Value Added (GVA) is concerned. We are also one of only two regions that have fallen back so far that we qualify for the ‘Less Developed Region’ status meaning that we qualify for the highest level of Economic Aid from the EU. With the UK being the 6th richest country in the world this is disgraceful. To make matters worse the current government will not allow us to control the distribution of the aid that will come, meaning that we cannot target it to the areas we need to. This needs to be changed. We have the ability and willingness to run these programmes.

HealthThe health service in Cornwall is in crisis. However, this is not down to the workers who provide an amazing service to the people of the Duchy. They show every day how caring the staff are and how much they try to make the most of meagre resources. What we need for Cornwall is a fully public National Health Service that deals with need and not ability to pay. This requires proper funding from Central Government and full autonomy to the Duchy so we can ensure that the service meets the needs of the local population. This includes the provision of a second A&E Centre in the East of Cornwall to reduce the reliance and pressure on Derriford Hospital in Plymouth.

EDUCATIONEducation is a major issue for me. Being young myself, I really understand the improvements that are needed to equip our youngsters for the globalised world. We must dramatically increase the availability of grammar schools, a vital tool in improving social mobility; it allows those who are less well off a quality education that they have been deprived of for too long. We must also champion vocational education for those who desire it, and stop viewing university as the only option – vocational education and apprenticeships need to be encouraged.

I believe politics needs to change, both nationally and here in South East Cornwall. You deserve an elected representative that will work hard for you on your behalf, an elected representative that will champion democracy, in the form of local referenda and real recall, giving you more direct power over policy. These are just a couple of things I offer to you should I get elected. However, UKIP are far more than that; we have a whole host of policies on a range of issues which I will outline below.

Promoted by Nigel Challis on behalf of Bradley Monk, UK Independence Party (UKIP), both at Breney Farm, Lanlivery, Cornwall, PL30 5DF.

JOBSIt is clear that we require more well-paying jobs in Cornwall, with average wages being considerably lower than the national average. To do that we must make the economy attractive for business, therefore encouraging job creation and investment. Excessive regulation and complex tax codes, both from Westminster and the European Union, strangle small businesses – the backbone of our Cornish economy. I will do whatever possible to simplify the tax code, to abolish excessive regulation, and to improve employment here in Cornwall. We also have a problem with talented youth leaving the county because of a lack of opportunities, something which I believe can be tackled with devolution of powers. This is a policy I have always supported and it would allow us to invest more smartly in the economy and create skilled jobs, thus enabling us to retain our youth.

HEALTHFinally, we must ensure healthcare is improved. UKIP have committed to spending an extra £3 billion a year on frontline services, where the money should be spent rather than on more layers of middle management as the system is too bloated. We will also work to implement a county health board for Cornwall, which will allow our medical professionals to focus on what matters most - treating patients to the highest possible level.

Sheryll MurraySheryll Murray was born and now lives in South East Cornwall. She has worked hard as our Member of Parliament for the past five years holding regular advice surgeries in Saltash and attending many events. She is pleased to outline her thoughts on Health, Education and Jobs as requested by Love Saltash.

To create jobs and to be able to spend the money we need to on health and education meansthat firstly we must get the economy right. Our long-term economic plan is building a stronger, healthier economy and securing a better future for Britain.

EducationI was educated locally, my children were educated locally and I was a school governor. To build a Britain that gives every child the best start in life, I am committed to a good primary school place for every child. I am keen to support teachers to make Britain the best country in the world for developing maths, science and computing skills. I want to create three million new apprenticeships and make sure there is no cap on university places, so we have aspiration for all and guarantee a place on National Citizen Service for every teenager who wants it.

JobsJobs are incredibly important. Unemployment can lead to wasted potential, the anti-social behaviour, and the low self-esteem. I know how important it is to keep people in work. Apprenticeships have been a great success. I want to see a government create three million new apprenticeships so young people get the skills to succeed. To build a Britain with full employment, we will encourage enterprise and back small business, keeping jobs taxes low and cutting red tape. We must invest in infrastructure to attract business and good jobs across the whole of the UK. I also want to make sure work pays.

HealthI worked for the NHS locally for over 20 years. I am committed to an NHS that meets the needs of everyone, that is free at the point of delivery and that is based on clinical need, not ability to pay. I was pleased to open Torpoint’s new £2 million health centre Pentorr Health. Up until now the Rame Group Practice had the nurses working from one site and GPs at another. This meant patients in Torpoint were not getting the best from the NHS. That has now changed and I will be campaigning to ensure that the whole of South East Cornwall gets the best possible local health care and facilities.
