Organized by Alliance Française de Hong Kong with the support of the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macao and Le French May, the 2019 French Cinema Programme will take place from 29 May to 11 June 2019 at Broadway Cinematheque, AMC Cinema, and the newly opened Premiere Elements cinema. This year the programme will invite the Hong Kong audience to embark on an artistic journey through French Cinema celebrating the present and the rich history of French cinema and featuring new releases and rarely screened classics.

Le French May Cinema Programme, entitled “Love, Passion and Glamour”, will explore the maelstrom of human feelings. Love, Passion and Glamour will bring a selection of eleven movies among the best release and the classic repertoire such as “Amour” by Michael Haneke, “Belle de Jour” by Luis Buñuel, “Blue is the Warmest Colour” (La Vie d’Adèle) by Abdellatif Kechiche, “A Man and A Woman” (Un homme et une femme) by Claude Lelouch, “A Summer’s Tale” (Conte d’été) by Eric Rohmer, “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg” (Les Parapluies de Cherbourg) by Jacques Demy, “The Woman Next Door” (La Femme d'à côté) by François Truffaut, as well as a few newly released movies.

A Night With ClAire DeNiS 與克麗雅丹妮的約會Born in Paris in 1946 and raised in colonial French Africa, Claire Denis is a major film director and writer of contemporary world cinema. After spending her childhood in Africa, she came back to France and studied at the IDHEC. Her major works are inspired by Africa such as her first feature “Chocolat” (1988) selected at the Cannes Film Festival, “Beau Travail” (1999) and “White Material” (2010). Her feature film “Bright Sunshine In” (2017) starring Juliette Binoche makes an about-face regarding the rest of her works.

家。在非洲渡過了童年的歲月，回到法國後在法國高等電影研究學院攻讀。她的作品大部份都有着濃

Inspired by a novel of Joseph Kessel.

Severine, the very reserved wife of Pierre, is prey to masochistic fantasies which reveal her sexual frustration. Driven by curiosity, she secretly pays a visit to a brothel and unknown to Pierre, she soon becomes “Beauty of the Day”, the third girl in Madame Anaïs’ discreet house of ill-repute. She seems to have found an inner peace through the satisfaction of her clients’ desires but things turn sour when Marcel, a loutish regular visitor to the bordello, insists on having Severine all to himself.

1897, Paris in the ‘Belle Epoque’. Edmond Rostand is a playwright of potential genius. Unfortunately, all he has written until now has been a flop. He is paralyzed by the sight of a blank page and his inspiration has dried up. Thanks to his admirer Sarah Bernhardt, he is approached by the greatest actor of the day, Constant Coquelin, who absolutely insists on playing in his next play. And he wants to premiere it in three weeks! The only problem: Edmond has not yet written it, and has no idea what story he will tell. All he knows is its title: “Cyrano de Bergerac”.

A man and a woman meet by accident on a Sunday evening at their childrens’ boarding school. Slowly they reveal themselves to each other, finding that each is a widow/widower. Each is slow to reveal anything personal so that each revelation is hidden by a misperception. They become friends, then close friends, and then she reveals that she can’t have a lover because, for her, her husband's memory is still too strong.

In Verona, an old rivalry opposes the Capulet and Montague families. When Romeo Mantague and Juliet Capulet fall for each other, they know their love is meant to be eternal. However they already sense their tragic ending…

Probably Shakespeare’s best-known work, which, over time and many adaptations it has undergone, has come to embody the absolute love story.

This tragedy, which contains some delectable moments of comedy, is a play of contrasts, pitting the naivety of two lovelorn teenagers against the programmed violence of the Montagues and Capulets bloodying Verona.

Franck is a firefighter in Paris. He saves people. He lives at the station with his wife, who is about to have twins. He’s happy. Special tribute to Michel Legrand

Cherbourg, November 1957. Madame Emery and her daughter, Geneviève, run a store called The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. Geneviève is in love with Guy, a mechanic working in a garage. When her mother learns of the relationship, she disapproves. Guy lives with his aunt, who is seriously ill. He is called to do his military service in Algeria. The two lovers must part. Pregnant and desperate because she has little news of Guy, Geneviève is forced by her mother to marry Roland Cassard, a rich wholesaler of precious stones. She leaves Cherbourg with her mother.

Bernard Coudray lives with his wife Arlette and their young son Thomas in their country home. Just across their home, another house is for sale.
