One of the most famous passages of rabbinic wisdom comes from our sage Hillel in Pirke Avot. He asked three questions: “If I am not for myself, who will be for me? But if I am only for myself, what am I? And if not now, when?”

Part of Hillel’s genius is that he posed these questions but didn’t try to answer them. They hang there, demanding that we each find balance in how we choose to respond.

Think about the singular value of an individual human life. Our tradition teaches that each individual is uniquely holy and precious. Many of us are familiar with the well-known teaching from the Mishna that explains that God created just a single human life as God’s masterpiece of creation in order to teach that anyone who destroys a single human life is as if he destroyed an entire world, but anyone who saves a single human life is as if he saved an entire world.

But as the broader world embraced this truth in modern times, we have lost our balance. Our society literally idolizes the individual, leading us to turn away from each other and the collective needs we share as a society. When we think only about our own individual cares, needs, wants, and desires, and live only for ourselves, Hillel rightly asks: “what are we?”

The synagogue represents an

answer to Hillel’s questions. Each of us individually comes to the synagogue to fill certain individual needs: infant care for our babies, Jewish education for our children, leadership development for our teens, guidance in celebrating a wedding or in navigating the illness and loss of a loved-one. We call on the synagogue to learn and to grow, for wisdom and understanding, for help in a crisis, to build our individual connection to larger community.

But there is much more that Hillel demands we consider. Temple Beth El is a community, a family. Our congregation is only as strong as the commitment we make to each other. The central teaching of Judaism is that while each of us is created individually in the image of God, it is only when we come together and weave the bonds of love we share into a fabric of community that we can be all that God asks us to become.

I personally am so deeply inspired

by the level of commitment so many share for our congregation and community. I think about the extraordinary service of so many volunteers who give hundreds of hours of time and talent to make our community vibrant and strong. I think about so many members who have shared their commitment to Temple Beth El for so many, many years. I think of those who joined the congregation just recently, who have

jumped in with two feet and made Temple Beth El their home away from home.

It’s amazing even to see the number of members whose commitment to Temple Beth El has led them to serve our congregation in a professional capacity. So many members of our professional staff, religious school teachers and pre-school teachers were members of Temple Beth El before joining our staff, even some who grew up at Temple Beth El themselves. (See page nine)

This summer, as a Jewish year comes to a close and a fiscal year begins, I invite everyone to consider renewing our individual and collective commitment to Temple Beth El – not simply renewing our memberships, but truly renewing our congregational commitment. This year, make more time for volunteer service, to learn something new, to explore your spirituality, to participate in acts of Tikkun Olam – repairing our world. I give thanks for the commitment we all share for Temple Beth El. Together, as Temple Beth El’s mission statement teaches, we can inspire in ourselves and each other, a passionate commitment to Jewish life, learning, community and spiritual growth. If not now … when?

I personally am so deeply inspired by the level of commitment so many share for our congregation and

community. I think about the extraordinary service of so many volunteers who give hundreds of hours of time and

talent to make our community vibrant and strong.

A MESSAGE FROM BARRY PODOLSKY

Connect Connect Connect A famous watchmaker advertises, “You never actually own a Patek Philippe. You merely look after it for the next generation.” I purchased one of these watches 37 years ago. I don’t recall the ad (if they were using it back then?) but over the years, the ad caused me to think about that watch differently than anything else I own.

I tell you this because I think of the Temple in the same way. When we decided to join 30 years ago, I didn’t have a long-term view. We were looking for a place to educate our children and to connect with other Jewish families in our new hometown of Boca Raton. But over the years, my view on the Temple has changed. As a member, I do feel a real level of ownership. (Don’t the members really own the Temple?) But I also feel a real responsibility that continues for the next generation. The prayer we recite on Shabbat, “I’m standing on the shoulders of the ones who came before me” says it best.

So you ask what happened that caused me to change my feeling about the Temple (and about my watch.) In both cases, the product (or programs) really didn’t change. They were always known to be the best. It was me that changed – I was open to receiving, to

experiencing and to committing. I didn’t become a regular at Shabbat services, but I found the Temple offered so many portals of entry and I risked and trusted to attend different events. Then I started to volunteer, first on the Finance Committee, then the Endowment Committee, then Investment Committee and even the Religious Activities Committee (you can thank me for suggesting a second day of services for Rosh Hashanah 25 years ago—or not!)

I’m telling you this because as we begin a new year I want to encourage each of you to risk and to trust. Select a portal of engagement. Try it two or three times. I’m confident you will find your own connection and it will be rewarding. If you aren’t sure where to start, give Elinor a call at the Temple office or call me. After 30 years, I can probably give you some good suggestions.

I love being a member of the Temple. It is a second family to me and it can be for you, too. As for my watch, I still keep it in the original box and get it serviced every 3 years. Like the Temple, I’m merely looking after it for the next generation. I know they’ll appreciate it just like I appreciate the work of those who came before me.

A MESSAGE FROM STEVE KAUFMAN

Executive Director Steve [email protected]

Temple Beth El takes our safety and security seriously. We have been working on a series of security improvements in consultation with local law enforcement and we want to share with you some of the changes that will be implemented in the coming weeks.

At the Beck Family Campus, a third party security firm will manage campus security. This change includes the introduction of an armed, uniformed officer being present on campus during all operating hours when children are in the building.

At the Schaefer Family Campus,

the Board approved a significant expansion in the number of hours during which armed security will be present. The armed security will be a combination of a third party security firm and the Boca Raton Police Department depending on the time of day and nature of the event.

More security cameras have been added at the Schaefer Family Campus, and we will be installing additional gates on the northwest section of the campus to make it even more difficult to gain unauthorized access.

We have direct lines of

communication to the Palm Beach County Sherriff’s Office, Boca Raton Police Department, Department of Homeland Security and the Anti-Defamation League and we are in frequent contact with these organizations. At the present time there is no reason for concern as there are no known threats to our congregation. The security improvements discussed above have all been in the works for quite some time. Should you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us as we always welcome your feedback.

BECK FAMILY CAMPUSThe new splash pad recreation area is nearly complete. The basketball court concrete slab has been poured and the backboard and rim systems are up. The last step is the court surface application and line striping.

The shaded picnic pavilion is in place and also nearly complete. We are just waiting on the new picnic tables to arrive.

The splash pad concrete slab has been poured and all of the water toys are set in place. The underground plumbing is complete and the pump and filtration systems are installed. The last step is the painting of the Splash Pad floor as well as the installation of fencing and landscaping.

SCHAEFER FAMILY CAMPUSThe Facilities Planning Task Force selected Kaufman Lynn Construction as General Contractor for the Schaefer Family Campus major renovation project after a formal Request for Proposals selection process. Kaufman Lynn Construction (“KL”) is the same firm that built the Beck Family Campus in 2009 and the Schaefer Family Campus Atrium renovations in 2006.

We continue to make progress on the architectural plans with our architect PGAL. The floorplan has been finalized and we are now working on detailed engineering plans for HVAC systems, electrical, plumbing and structural aspects of the Project. Our goal is

to submit for permit approvals to the City of Boca Raton by the end of the summer, and hopes to commence construction activity in the first quarter of 2017.

I am thrilled to have completed my four year course of study through the Hebrew Union College and am now officially your Cantor! Many of you have lovingly said to me, “you’ve always been my Cantor.” Or “I thought you were the Cantor…”

Twenty years ago, I was just a member of the congregation like everyone else, happily married with two very young children. In 1997 I was blessed to be invited to serve as Cantorial Soloist. So you may ask, “What’s the difference between a Cantor and a Cantorial Soloist?” The difference may not seem so obvious on the outside. For so many years, part-time and then beginning full-time eleven years ago, I taught B’nai Mitzvah students, led Shabbat and holy day

worship, and participated in weddings and funerals.

But while I could certainly perform the functions required of me, I lacked the education that could truly help me become the spiritual leader I wanted to be. My four years of education have helped me understand the threads that weave together the spiritual fabric of Jewish worship, and how the musical modes

of our tradition can elevate our Jewish spirituality.

From the outside, it may seem like not much has changed. I will still be there with you on Friday nights, Shabbat mornings, holy days and at our congregation’s

life-cycle events. But I have changed. I pushed to complete this program because I wanted to offer more to the congregation I love. My commitment to Temple Beth El comes from the deepest place in my soul, and I hope my education will allow me, as your Cantor, to be a spiritual leader that will deepen all of our connections to tradition, to each other, and to God.

JULY & AUGUST

The Social Action Committee strives to achieve social justice in the Boca Raton community, in Israel, and throughout the world. They are committed to the mission of Tikkun Olam – repairing the world. We spoke with Wendy Walin, VP of Social Action, as well as some devoted committee members who lead various social action projects and we just want to say THANK YOU! We couldn’t be Temple Beth El without you!

WHAT DOES YOUR COMMITTEE DO?We usually meet once a month to discuss and plan our upcoming events. Various committee members chair specific programs and update everyone on the progress at our meetings. The committee evaluates new Social Action initiatives throughout the year to determine their viability as well as evaluating ongoing programs to determine their impact in achieving our goals.

Another function of the Social Action Committee is to choose which non-profit organizations we will support through donations to our Temple Tzedakah fund. Temple members make presentations to us which we then discuss to determine if we will make a financial distribution and of what amount.

WHAT’S UNIQUE ABOUT YOUR COMMITTEE?We are a very diverse group of individuals of all ages and stages who come together sharing the

hope of making the world a better place. Each member shares a passion to work towards this goal and believes that collectively we can achieve important change in our fight against inequality and our work in helping the poor, the hungry, the homeless, and the less fortunate.

ONE ACCOMPLISHMENT YOU’RE PROUD OF?Our decision to change from a yearly Mitzvah Day to a Mitzvah of the Month program. This has allowed so many more members the opportunity to participate in our social action programs. It has been amazing to see so many Temple members join us in our important work.

In each issue of The Chronicle, we highlight one of our Temple

Beth El committees and the very important work they do.

COMMITTEE SPOTLIGHT

Debbie Averbook led our Gleaning crew, who along with Cros Ministries helped pick and donate over 2,076 pounds of cucumbers given to the Palm Beach County Food Bank!

Correction: In the previous Committee Spotlight, we omitted that Parenthood, the parent organization of the Beth El Early Learning Center, was preceded by BEMA, the Beth El Moms Association.

WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES FOR THE FUTURE?My hope for the future is that more members will choose to get involved with us. It is so easy to take that first step toward helping others and then having the tremendous gratification that comes from knowing that you’ve made a difference in the world. It’s easy to register for Mitzvahs of the Month on the temple website at tbeboca.org/social-action, by checking the weekly email or the service sheet at Shabbat Evening Services or just calling the clergy office to find out about our next mitzvah!

Each year, the efforts of Mike Blackman his family, friends and Temple Beth

El Members bring us together to participate in the Leukemia &

Lymphoma Society’s Light the Night Walk, raising awareness and funds

to find a cure for blood cancers.

The Talmud teaches that the Temple was destroyed because of “Sinat Chinam – the senseless hatred of a divided society.”

This morning, we will use the lens of military service to understand how communities build cohesion and strength in times of stress and strife, and how those lessons may be applied to our nation, to our people, to our community, and to our individual lives.

Hatched! The Beth El Early Learning Center families enjoyed the simplest and purest experience collectively, as we all witnessed the hatching of our eggs this past Spring. The joy these chicks brought to our children, staff and temple wide community was immeasurable. From the time the eggs arrived to the time the chicks left for the farm, the children were immersed in organic learning opportunities.

Questions were asked: Where did they come from? What kind are they? Wow long will it take for them to hatch? What should we name them?... and so on. Books were read, charts were made, egg experiments were performed, data was collected, fences were built, measurements were taken, fractions were explained. And then it happened…the inevitable question came up; “What’s that stuff coming out of them?” Yes, even then we were responsive

to the children’s observations, and chose to embrace the subject and read the book Everyone Poops.

The entire experience of hatching eggs was heartwarming. There wasn’t a human being that came through the building that wasn’t curious and moved by the experiment. Sixteen beautiful chicks came into our lives briefly before we sent them safely to a nearby farm and we are all better for having had the experience. We can only hope that we are able to repeat the process next year with eggs from our adorable offspring. L’dor vador!

Who do I call if my daughter wants to go on a Junior BOFTY trip, or my son has to miss Derech Torah because of basketball? For the 2016-17 school year, these questions will be easier to answer because of a new organizational structure being implemented in the Religious School. This change addresses a goal from our Strategic Plan to better connect the formal (Religious School) and informal (Youth Engagement) aspects of our program, and to create a more comprehensive experience for our children.

To do this, we are creating two positions of Assistant Director of Jewish Learning and Living, under my continued stewardship as Director. Jules Wolfberg who is beginning her eighth year at Temple Beth El will be

the Assistant Director of Jewish Learning and Living focused on Grades 7-12, both formal education and informal (Jr. BOFTY, BOFTY and Teen Engagement

Programs.) While at Temple Beth El, Jules has earned a Certificate of Jewish Education in Adolescents and Emerging Adults from HUC-JIR (Hebrew Union College.) Having Jules in this position enables us to engage, educate and impact our teens in a more meaningful way.

Amanda Charson Brezinski will be the Assistant Director of Jewish Learning and Living focused on grades K-6, both formal and informal education. Amanda served as Director of Education at Temple Emanu-El of Palm Beach before she

came to us and she has quickly become an integral part of our Religious School team, teaching Religious School classes, serving as a youth group advisor and chaperone, as well as our administrative assistant.

We truly thank Marcy Schultz for serving as Associate Director of Jewish Learning and Living this past year. Marcy’s passion, energy, smile, talent and dedication to our children and families has had a huge impact on Temple Beth El. I could not have asked for a better partner for myself or our families.

Lauren Berg MITZVAH PROJECT With the help of family and friends, we formed team “Answer for Cancer” at the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in Parkland. We came together to celebrate survivors, remember people lost to the disease, honor those who have fought or are fighting cancer, acknowledge caregivers, and take action against the disease, by fighting back through prevention education and fundraising. We also crafted cards for the kids at Joe DiMaggio’s Children’s Hospital to bring hope and joy into their lives during extremely difficult times and help them find the strength to keep fighting. It was a wonderful evening packed with energy, entertainment, education, and giving back to our community! Together we achieve so much more, we raised over $1300 and made almost 100 cards all supporting tikkun olam.  Thank you so much to everyone who came out in the heat and the rain, and to those who contributed to these worthy causes.

Lotem Eilon If you would have stopped me on the street five years ago and asked me to go to a temple for Shabbat services with you, I would smile, maybe even laugh, and pass. Most Israelis do not grow up going to synagogue. They celebrate holidays at home with their families,

they may fast on Yom Kippur, or have Kiddush at Shabbat family dinner, they celebrate Bar Mitzvah. Most Israelis (secular) don’t attend synagogue regularly, or even at all.

Israel itself is our large Jewish community. Everything in the country has Jewish infused in it – the food, the language, the people, the signs, the laws. Being Israeli is itself a very strong feeling

LOVE of PLACEYou hear people say it all the time, “Temple Beth El is a special place.” It’s full of love and spirit and community and warmth. This “love of place” is apparent in our Temple members who have become full-time staff members here. We asked them a few questions to get to know them better and try to reveal what inspired them to build a career at Temple Beth El. Here’s a sampling, but be sure to read more about their stories at tbeboca.org/news

Sustaining Members are the foundation and strength of our synagogue and the Jewish future. Over the years, Sustaining Members have helped

more than one thousand families join or maintain membership, and thousands of children to attend our Beth El Learning Center and Religious School/Maimonides

Institute for Jewish Learning by making involvement in Temple Beth affordable and attainable for all.

It’s amazing to see the difference between what we ask members to contribute as their congregational commitment compared to what it actually

costs to run the synagogue. Next year we will ask each family to contribute $2,340 while our total operating budget actually shows a cost of just over $3,700 per

household. Sustaining Members who contribute above and beyond the standard congregational commitment allow us to provide the strong Jewish foundation our community needs and to ensure that Temple Beth El is open to all who may need our collective love and embrace, or the wisdom and guidance of a caring rabbi and a holy tradition.

In gratitude, we are proud to offer all Sustaining Members:• Recognition on the Sustaining Member Wall of Honor

at the Schaefer Family Campus• Annual Special Reception Honoring Sustaining

At Temple Beth El, our philosophy is to ensure that anyone who wants to worship or obtain a Jewish education is able to join our temple family, regardless of financial constraints. Our Annual Giving Campaign defrays the costs of congregational commitments, early childhood education and religious school tuition for those in need of a helping hand.

PROVIDES SCHOLARSHIPS AND HELP TO THOSE IN NEED

This past year alone we provided over $427,000 of scholarship assistance to our members.• 244 families received membership assistance• 71 children were awarded religious school

and youth group scholarships• 30 children were given aid for early learning education

These families and children simply would not be able to be part of Temple Beth El without the support of our Annual Giving Donors. Thank You!

Debbi Rosenblum and Shari Schwamm Sisterhood Co-Presidents [email protected]/sisterhood

Andrew H. Zwick, and Alan S. Klasfeld Brotherhood [email protected]/brotherhood

Summertime is upon us. But then again it’s Florida so how can you tell? For Brotherhood summertime means a slowing down of our events and activities. We ended our year with a tremendous Mothers’ Day Bruch with over 100 people enjoying food, music, and the wonderfulness that is Mom! Now the two of us look back on our first year of Brotherhood leadership and take stock of what went well, and what things we can improve. We offer

our unbiased opinion that our leadership was superb, and that everything that Brotherhood does is golden! But our biased opinion is that Brotherhood needs more of what Temple Beth El needs more of in general….commitment. The strength and long term success of Brotherhood comes from the same source as that of any organization. A

commitment from its Board to offer the very best programming it can…and from its general membership to support and participate in the planning and execution of that programming. We believe that Brotherhood is a unique opportunity for the male members of Temple Beth El to bond together, network with each other, support each other, do mitzvot…and most importantly fulfill our commitment to Temple Beth El as its auxiliary. Brotherhood gives its members a chance to participate in Temple life that goes beyond just Friday night services and Jewish life cycle events. I invite all interested men to contact us through our website and we can talk about what it means to be part of Brotherhood. We have put together what we think is an exciting and fun calendar of events for the 2016-2017 year. Show some commitment to Temple Beth El and don’t just join us, but participate with us, and in doing so making Temple Beth El the exceptional place it is.

As the summer comes to an end (well theoretically, anyway!), we are refreshed and ready to begin anew. It is hard to believe that Shari and I are already over halfway through our Sisterhood Presidency. Being Co-Presidents has been so rewarding and has really allowed both of us to meet so many wonderful Temple members and engage with the community. I am always proud to introduce myself as a president of Temple Beth El Sisterhood. Beth El is such an important part of the Boca Raton community. Being a member and being involved is vital to our future and sends an important message to our children. Sisterhood supports our Early

Learning Center and Religious School throughout the year by providing cultural experiences during the holidays. We know that our Jewish future depends on today’s children. Our commitment extends throughout the Temple and into the greater community as we engage in discussions, events, and many varied activities.

Temple Beth El has been a very large part of both of our lives for many years (Shari grew up here!) We have raised our kids here and celebrated many simchas with our Temple family. Both of us have made a commitment to our Jewish community and have made a

conscious decision to be actively involved. We have room for you to also be involved in the Temple sisterhood. Whether event planning is your strong suit, you would like to work in the gift shop, or you just enjoy giving back, we would love for you to join us. Come to a meeting or event, you will be glad you did!

We’ve designed an engaging High Holy Days Tot and Youth program for children ages 2 through 7. This enriching hands-on program will start at 10:00am and finish simultaneously with morning worship on the first day of Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur.

This program is not meant to replace the High Holy Days Young Children’s Service, but it is an additional experience that will allow parents to attend the morning worship services.

Reservations must be received by September 9 to ensure proper staffing and group placements by age. Walk-ins are not accepted, due to staffing requirements. There is a $5 donation per child per holiday. Siblings will not be in the same group unless they are in the same grade level at school.

TOT PROGRAM Ages 2-3Staffed by teachers from our Early Learning Center, children will experience High Holy Days with activities that are appropriate for them. Activities may include Torah parade, listening to the Shofar, arts and crafts and eating apples dipped in honey. Contact Beth El Learning Center with any questions, 561-391-9091.

YOUTH PROGRAM Pre-K through 2nd GradeStaffed by teachers from our Religious School, children will participate in art projects, stories, song sessions, snacks and Tefillah. Contact the Religious School office with any questions at 561-391-8900.

HIGH HOLY DAY TOT AND YOUTH PROGRAM For your children while you are at adult worship. Save time and register online at tbeboca.org/high-holy-days-2016

of peoplehood and of belonging to a community.

Coming to the U.S. to work in a temple was a very funny thought for me. And I started this year with a lot of worries. Would I fit in a temple as an Israeli who went to the synagogue maybe three times in my life, for a relative’s Bar Mitzvah – and that was an Orthodox synagogue? But I have come to learn that synagogue is not just a place to worship, to find God. It is a place where you find a community, a family, a place to belong and to me this is holiness. It drew me in.

This year, I have worked with youth group, Religious school, and Lunch and Learn. I have also worked closely with the Confirmation class – and learned so much from and with them. When they were confirmed recently, I was so moved by the service. It had a lot to do with the connections formed, but there’s more. In a way, I felt like I was confirmed with them. I have found my Jewish, and connected spiritually in a way I never thought I would. I have found a home in Temple Beth El.
