6 Love of Knitting | Holiday 2012 loveofknitting.com
I have long knit primarily for other people, and due to my fondness for knitting for others, the Holiday issue is always a particular favorite. I love small, quickly knit projects and seeing so many in one issue, I am always inspired to cast on more projects than I can possibly
fi nish in a single holiday season. This issue is no different, and I already selected several projects to add to my knitting queue.
If, like me, you too are anxious to get started on your holiday knitting, you will love how jam packed this issue is with quick and easy project ideas. And, regardless of whether you live in a warm or cool climate, you will have no diffi culties fi nding several great gift ideas. For your coffee or tea loving family and friends knit our Coffee Cozies, page 45. With three simple patterns to choose from, they will make for a wonderful project for knitters of all skill levels. The small size makes them a very quick knit, perfect to fi ll those last minute gift needs, and the best part is they can use up small bits of leftover yarn. One of these simple cozies will make a lovely addition to a gift basket, or knit several for teacher or co-worker gifts.
Living in a state that experiences cold weather in the winter, I love giving gifts that are fun, fashionable, and functional, which is why I am excited to try thrumming. Using our helpful instructions featured in A Beginners Guide to Thrumming, page 22, I have made plans to knit both the Paintbox Mittens, page 36, and the Awaiting St. Nick Stocking, page 29. If you also live in a cold climate, you won’t want to miss any of the holiday projects featuring this fun technique that adds warmth to your outdoor accessories.
From cozy sweaters and elegant party attire, to holiday decorating ideas and fun accessories to ward off the chill, we had a wonderful time select-ing the designs in this issue for you. We hope that you fi nd the projects in our Holiday issue as fun and inspiring as we do.
Kick off your holiday knitting on I Love Yarn Day, October 12th. Start the gift giving season with a gift of yummy yarn to yourself.
Happy Holidays!

Functional and fashionable, this traditional technique adds a decorative touch to your knitt ing. Make outdoor accessories extra warm with a soft layer of roving.
Th rummed knitt ing
Depending on which method is used, thrumming is as simple as catching a tuft of roving (also known as un-spun fl eece) while knitting
to create a fl eeced backing to the project. Once washed and worn, the fl eece mats down and partially felts, creating a soft and warm lining that
separates itchy wool from sensitive skin while keeping the skin dry. There are several ways to thrum. Each technique is slightly different than the other, however, but the end result is the same.
Shown here are two methods of thrumming: the simplest technique of traditional thrumming and an updated version that are both used on the projects in this issue. With traditional thrumming, the roving is actually knit and treated like working yarn. The roving stitch stands out as a design element, especially when a contrast-colored roving is used. The updated version does not use the roving as a stitch but instead places the tuft on top of the working yarn to be caught in the back of the work. Since the roving is caught behind the stitch, it looks more like fl eece and is less apparent on the right side, with just slight halos of tuft showing through to the right side. Traditional thrumming is usually knit every 4 stitches or less with several knitting rounds in between. The updated version of thrumming usually occurs every other stitch and every other round for a lion’s mane look!
HOW TO A Beginner’s
Guide
Thrummed knitting originated in Newfoundland, Canada, and was traditionally
used in mittens to keep hands warm and dry in the harsh cold climate. Nowadays,
thrummed knitting can also be found in headbands, slippers, and hats.

F
Traditional thrummed knitting Using a rope of roving, lightly pull and lengthen roving (called drafting) to create a lighter, more airy piece of roving. Tear roving into 5-inch lengths and bring ends together to create a loop. With index fi nger and thumb, roll center of loop together (where the ends come together) and roll it to same thickness as the yarn used in the project (photo A). Roving will look like a bow tie (photo B).
Work to desired stitch where thrumming will be added. Drop the working yarn and pick up 1 bow tie tuft. Center the tuft on the right-hand needle with the bow tie ends in back of the work (photos C and D). Knit the stitch (photo E).
When knitting the next stitch, bring the working yarn behind the roving and knit the stitch (photo F).
Pull tails gently to secure the roving.

L
Updated version of thrummed knitting Cut pieces of roving into 3- to 4-inch lengths. Pull apart the roving to the same thickness as the yarn (photo G).
Work to desired stitch where thrumming will be added. Pick up the stitch as if to knit and center tuft onto the working yarn (photo H). Knit the stitch with the working yarn (photo I). Tuft is laying on the backside of the stitch caught between the knit and purl stitch (photos J and K).
Pull tails gently to even the lengths if necessary. Also, roving may be lightly pulled apart, brushed, or trimmed for the desired look (photo L).
Tips• Got a bare spot? Crochet roving
into the bare spot—like you would add fringe.
• Thrumming can be added to any project; however, thrumming adds bulk to the project and alters the overall gauge. Thrumming can easily be worked around the edge of a sleeve or collar for a row or two without losing the integrity of the garment.
• Never thrum every stitch as this will create too much bulk and will distort the stitches. Thrumming can occur every other stitch or less often, depending on the desired look or coverage.
• Not happy with the thrummed appearance? Simply pull out the thrummed rows from the working project, split each tuft in half, and knit the rows with half the tuft thickness. Trim to desired length.

By Amy Polcyn
In the last issue, we explored how knit and purl stitches can be com-bined to create a range of different ribbings, each with their own special characteristics and uses. This time, we return to the basic knit and purl, but instead combine them into something extra special.
Unlike ribbing, these textured stitches balance knit and purl stitches in such a way as to neither curl nor pull in, making them a perfect choice for projects that need to lie fl at, such as scarves, table runners, curtains, potholders, and the like. Best of all, projects like these make ideal gifts—no need to know someone’s size, just multiply your desired width by the gauge, fi nd the closest number that will work with the stitch pattern, cast on, and go!
Since textured stitches require no more knitting knowledge than how to knit and purl, they are within reach of even beginning knitters—just take the directions step by step and you’ll surely be impressed with the results.

In our Spring 2012 issue we told you about the importance of gauge, and while you should always check your gauge to ensure the proper fi t, it is important to start with the right yarn weight. The weight of a yarn refers to the thickness of the yarn. That thickness can be comprised of a single ply or multiple plies. Single-ply yarns are comprised of a single strand of fi ber in various weights, and heavier-weight yarns will often resemble roving. In multiple-ply yarns each ply is the same thickness, and the number of plies creates the thickness of the yarn—the larger the number of plies the thicker the yarn. Yarn plies used to be the same size; however, plies are no longer a consistent size and can vary widely from yarn manufacturer to yarn manufacturer. Due to these changes in yarn manufacturing, the Craft Yarn Council of America has begun a rating system based on the recommended needle sizes and the gauge created by each yarn in the different weights; the new rating system classifi es yarn into seven different yarn weights.
weightYour ideal
We have compiled a helpful guide on the following pages but remember there are no knitting rules; lace can be knit with bulky weights, and cabled sweaters can be knit with lace weight. Just as the weight plays a role in your fi nished fabric, so does the gauge; the weight will affect the appearance and the denseness, but ultimately it’s up to your personal preferences. If you like the appearance of lace in a bulky weight yarn, go for it, and knit yourself a closet full of shawls. Weight is a personal choice—which weight is your favorite?

Lace weight yarn is generally plied and is typically two plies. These multiple plies make the yarn stronger and more durable. This weight of yarn can appear very thin and fi ne; however, depending on the fi ber content, it can create garments that are very warm. Typically knit using size US 000 to 1 needles, this weight will enhance the lacy texture of knitted patterns. Larger needles can also be used, which will increase the lacy texture of the fi nished fabric. It can be diffi cult to keep a consistent tension and stitch size when knitting this yarn in straight stockinette stitch, and that inconsistent stitch size can create an additional level of interest.

Fine weight2
Fine weight yarns are more typically referred to as sport or baby weight and are generally used for garments. The fi nished knitted fabric tends to be light and breathable, perfect for babies’ delicate skin. Knit using US size 3–5 knitting needles means that projects knit with this yarn will knit up faster than lace or super-fi ne weight, as each stitch is larger, creating a larger gauge for a larger fabric with a smaller number of stitches. Additionally, because this yarn weight is slightly thicker, it is easier to create and maintain a consistent texture, and the appearance of the loops in simple stockinette stitch will be more uniform.

Super-fi ne weightSuper-fi ne weight yarns are often labeled sock weight, and just as that sounds they are most often used to knit socks. However, they shouldn’t be limited to just socks and can be used to create delicate light-weight shawls and sweaters, in addition to light-weight and durable baby items. Typically knit using US size 1–3 needles, this weight will also create lacy and delicate patterns. Depending on the fi ber content, yarns found in this weight can be particularly durable, and often can be machine washable, making them easy to care for. Like lace weight, using a larger-sized needle will create a larger gauge (and larger fi nished project) and give the fi nished fabric a lacier appearance, but it can be diffi cult to maintain a consistent tension, which will affect the appearance of the loops in simple stockinette stitch.

Medium weight4
Worsted weight yarns are one of the most popular yarn weights. Used for everything from garments to blankets to hats and scarves, it can also be used to knit lace patterns. Because of the larger size of the yarn, the fi nished lace pattern will still be open and pretty; however, it will be more substantial and will lose some of the delicate appearance of lace knit with a lighter yarn. Because this yarn is thicker in diameter, fewer stitches are needed to add length and width to projects and therefore projects are created more quickly. Additionally, this larger yarn will add more depth to textured stitches, and cables will appear more pronounced and raised, giving them additional interest. Using worsted weight yarn and smaller needles will produce a dense, fi rm fabric, ideal for toys or bags and projects that have a more structured fi nish.

Light weightLight-weight yarns are most often referred to as DK weight. The term DK stands for “double knit” and simply refers to the weight. This is a heavier weight than the previous weights discussed and will create projects with a more substantial feel. Although this is a heavier yarn, it is still light enough to produce delicate lace shawls, but it will also form a uniform and consistent stockinette fabric.

Bulky weight5
Bulky weight is a wonderful option when creating warm cabled sweaters and blankets. Because of the larger size of the yarn, the cables are pronounced, adding to the three-dimensional appearance. Additionally, the act of cabling stitches involves knitting the stitches out of order to create the raised and recessed sections. When cabling lighter weight yarns, gaps can often be seen where the stitches are twisted, but these gaps are almost non-existent with this weight of yarn as the yarn is dense enough to fi ll and hide the gaps. Bulky weight can also be used in lace patterns; however, like worsted weight, the design will lose much of the delicate lace appearance. Projects knit with a bulky weight yarn can be knit very quickly as it takes fewer stitches and fewer rows to produce a larger fi nished fabric.
Super-bulky weight
6
Super-bulky weight most often appears as roving, although there are some yarns in this weight that are plied. This weight will knit the fastest as it produces the largest gauge. Lace patterns knit with this weight will not appear very delicate and depending on the pattern much of the defi nition may be lost, but textured stitches will have a much more defi ned appearance, and cables will have more height and depth than other weights. This weight will quickly knit any project, and due to the large size of the stitches, this weight can be a wonderful tool to learn new techniques as the stitches are easily seen.

Holiday Boutique Knittingby Mary Jean Daigneault
Remember all that novelty “fur” yarn we bought in the beginning of this century? Does anyone besides us still have a binful? This book has several very cute patterns to make use of that bin, including a lovely snow couple, several wreaths, and a kitschy round pillow. Whether you are inspired by the advent calendar, the chapter on wreaths, or the stripes in the adorable stocking cap, your leftover yarn balls will soon be gone. While there are a few wearable project ideas, the main focus is on home dec and gifts for loved ones. The projects are mostly quick and easy, and the patterns themselves are in a nice big print—love that! This year, pick up this book and be inspired to start your holiday knitting!
Praxis Studios, 2011, 128 pages, $22.95, hardcover, www.needleworkarts.com
Knitting Pleatsby Olga Pobedinskaya
Beginning with a comprehensive picture tutorial explaining both the how-tos and the whys of making pleats, you will soon master this new and intriguing technique. Used frequently as a design element, they are also cleverly incorporated into the actual shaping of some of the sweater patterns. The patterns are mainly sweaters and cardigans, but there are also a fair amount of wraps with 2 hats thrown in for good measure. With 17 tempting designs, you will have a hard time deciding which garment to cast on fi rst. This book will encourage you to practice and perfect your pleats!

Knitting for Little FeetThe pitter-patter of little feet will be even cuter with any of the 40 patterns in this darling book. With sizes ranging from newborn to three years old, it is chock full of footwear for the little people in our lives. We love that it is one of those rare books that have a near-equal amount of male and female patterns, and they are not just baby booties, either! We liked the instruction on applying a latex sole and will be incorporating that in this year’s holiday gift slippers! With easy-to-follow pictorial instruction in the back of the book, these patterns for the tiny-toed make this an excellent starting point for sock-newbies, as well.

Playful Little Knitsby Rachel Manring
Starting with basic instructions for choices of fi ber and fi berfi ll, this book is full of information that is useful to all knitters of softies. The book opens with a beginner's pattern for a simple doll, and you will be quickly encouraged to set your imagination free. All the patterns are intended to dress up your new doll in a wide range of costumes. The basic baby suit pattern has both instructions for fi ngering, sport, and DK weights of yarn and for how to make the suit in different ways to dress up the baby doll. Additional patterns include animal costumes, street clothes, and even a ballerina outfi t! Any child would be lucky to have such an imagination-inspiring friend to play with!

Standard yarn weight systemStandards and guidelines for crochet and knitting: categories of yarn, gauge ranges, and recommended needle and hook sizes
Basic knitting instructions
* These are guidelines only: They refl ect the most com-monly used gauges and needle or hook sizes for specifi c yarn categories.
** Lace weight yarns are usually knitted or crocheted on larger needles and hooks to create lacy, openwork patterns. Accordingly, a gauge range is diffi cult to deter-mine. Always follow the gauge stated in your pattern.
*** Steel crochet hooks are sized differently from regular hooks—the higher the number, the smaller the hook, which is the reverse of regular hook sizing.

Twisted loop cast on
The twisted loop cast on is an easy method that will produce a soft, elas-tic edge. It is a great choice for adding on stitches or when knitting lace.
1 Make a slip knot with a tail long enough to cast on required number of stitches (about ½" per stitch); place slip knot on needle. Holding needle and yarn tail from ball in right hand, wrap yarn from back to front around left thumb; hold tail with your fi ngers (photo A).
2 Bring needle from bottom to top through loop of yarn on thumb (photo B).
3 Slide loop off thumb and pull on yarn tail to tighten loop on needle (photo C).
4 Repeat Steps 2 and 3 to cast on required number of stitches.
Knit smart™ If your cast on stitches are too tight, use a needle one or two sizes larger than the pattern calls for. Switch back to correct needle size before you begin to knit.
Knitted cast on
The knitted cast on method produces a loose, soft edge. This would not be a good choice for a garment with a ribbed edge, as it will look sloppy.
1 Make a slip knot, leaving a short tail (at least 4"); place slip knot on left needle.
2 Insert tip of right needle from left to right through the loop. Tip of right needle will be behind left needle (photo A).
3 Wrap yarn from back to front over right needle, then down between the two needles (photo B).
4 Bring tip of right needle forward through stitch on left needle, keeping wrapped yarn on right needle. Wrapped yarn forms a new stitch on right needle (photo C).
5 Insert left needle from right to left through loop on right needle (photo D).
6 Remove right needle from loop and gently tighten stitch on left needle (photo E).
7 Repeat steps 2–6 to cast on re-quired number of stitches.
Binding off
1 Knit fi rst two stitches from left needle (photo A).
2 Insert left needle from left to right into front of fi rst stitch on right needle. Lift fi rst stitch over second stitch and over end of right needle (photo B).
3 Slip left needle out of stitch and let it drop (photo C). (One stitch remains on right needle.)
4 Knit next stitch from left needle and repeat the last two steps. Continue across row until there are no stitches on left needle and one stitch remains on right needle (photo D).
5 Cut yarn, leaving at least a 4" tail. Pull end of yarn through loop of last stitch (photo E).
6 Pull on yarn tail to tighten the loop (photo F).

Increase:knit in the front and back (k1 f&b)
1 At point of increase, knit stitch, but do not remove stitch from left needle (photo A).
2 Insert tip of right needle from right to left through back of same loop on left needle. Tip of right needle will be behind left needle (photo B).
3 Wrap yarn from back to front around right needle; bring right needle for-ward through stitch on left needle, keeping wrapped yarn on right needle. There are now two stitches on right needle (photo C).
4 Slide right needle to the right, slipping stitch off left needle. You have increased one stitch (photo D).
Knit stitch
1 Hold needle with stitches in left hand; hold empty needle in right hand. Insert tip of right needle from left to right into front of stitch on left needle. Tip of right needle will be behind left needle (photo A).
2 Wrap yarn from back to front over right needle, then down between the two needles (photo B).
3 Bring tip of right needle for-ward through stitch on left needle, keeping wrapped yarn on right needle. Wrapped yarn forms a new stitch on right needle (photo C).
4 Slide right needle to the right, slipping stitch off left needle. Continue in same manner to the end of the row (photo D).
Purl stitch
1 Hold needle with stitches in left hand; hold empty needle in right hand. Insert tip of right needle from right to left into front of stitch on left needle. Yarn and right needle will be in front of left needle (photo A).
2 Wrap yarn from right to left around right needle (photo B).
3 Bring tip of right needle backward through stitch on left needle, keeping wrapped yarn on right needle. Wrapped yarn forms a new stitch on right needle (photo C).
4 Slide right needle to the right, slipping stitch off left needle. Continue in same manner to the end of the row (photo D).
Check your gauge
For best results, always take time to check your gauge. Using the same needles and yarn you will use for your project, knit a swatch that is about 5" (12.5 cm) square. Count the number of stitches and rows in 4". If you have more rows or stitches than indicated in your pattern, try larger needles and knit another swatch. If you have fewer rows or stitches than indicated, make another swatch using smaller needles. Continue this process until your swatch matches the numbers given in your pattern. Although this seems tedious, it is worth the time to increase the accuracy of the fi nished size of your project. A gauge tool, such as the one shown, can aid in counting stitches and rows.

Decrease:knit 2 together (k2tog)
1 At point of decrease, insert right needle from left to right through two stitches (photo A).
2 Wrap yarn from back to front around right needle; bring right needle forward through both stitches on left needle. Wrapped yarn forms stitch on right needle (photo B).
3 Slide right needle to the right, slipping stitches off left needle. You have de-creased one stitch (photo C).
4 Decrease will slant toward the right (photo D).
Decrease:slip, slip, knit (ssk)
1 At point of decrease, slip two stitches knitwise, one at a time, onto right needle. Insert left needle from left to right through front of the two slipped stitches on right needle (photo A).
2 Wrap yarn from back to front around right needle; bring right needle forward through both stitches on left needle. Wrapped yarn forms stitch on right needle (photo B).
3 Slide right needle to the right, slipping stitches off left needle. You have decreased one stitch (photo C).
4 Decrease will slant toward the left (photo D).
Grafting or Kitchener stitch
1 Arrange two pieces of knitting with same number of stitches on each needle and wrong sides facing. Thread the tail from the back piece through yarn needle. Insert yarn needle as if to purl in fi rst stitch on front needle. Leave stitch on needle (photo A).
2 Insert yarn needle through fi rst stitch on back needle as if to knit. Leave stitch on needle (photo B).
3 Bring yarn needle through fi rst stitch on front needle as if to knit and slip stitch off needle. Bring yarn nee-dle through next front stitch as if to purl and leave stitch on needle (photo C).
4 Bring yarn needle through fi rst stitch on back needle as if to purl and slip stitch off needle. Bring yarn needle through next back stitch as if to knit and leave stitch on needle (photo D).
5 Repeat steps 3 and 4 until no stitches remain on needles. Adjust tension of the stitches as you go to make them match the knitted stitches (photo E).
Note: We used a contrasting yarn in our sample to show the stitches better. Use matching yarn when grafting two pieces together.
