Finnegan’s StoryBy Elisabeth “Ashley” White, Willard MO

It all started 5 years ago when my husband Zach and I started trying for a second child. After multiple losses, we were finally blessed with what we thought was a healthy pregnancy. At 27 weeks + 5 days of gestation, my OBGYN confirmed what I had suspected. I was leaking amniotic fluid, which

measured 1.2 cm and should have been 14.0 cm. I found out I would be spending the remainder of my pregnancy in the hospital. The doctor said it would be best for the baby to be born no earlier than 34 weeks if possible, to allow the lungs to mature. Our first night in the hospital, the neonatal intensive care team came to our room to let us know what to expect with a premature baby. embraced our mission with gener-ous and caring spirits.

Speaking of generous and caring spirits, I’d like to recognize four of our volunteers that were recently recognized for 25 years of dedi-cated service. All four began their volunteer service at the Ronald McDonald House near Cox South. Gene & Betty Laytham recently retired from their weekly Tuesday shifts and Joan Schroeder contin-ues her work on Tuesdays. Sandy Emberton joined our volunteer force at the Mercy Ronald McDon-ald House when it opened nearly two years ago. These four amaz-ing people have given 100 years and nearly 14,000 hours of service, ensuring a warm, loving refuge for literally thousands of families. It’s truly been my honor to know and work alongside them over the past 25 years.

A Message From thePresident & CEO

Sincerely,

Bonnie Keller

The mission of Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) of the Ozarks is to create, find and support programs that directly improve the health and well being of children in the Ozarks. Our first priority is to provide a “home away from home” for families of seriously ill and injured children receiving treatment in Springfield’s medical facilities. Our first Ronald McDonald House, located near Cox South Hospital, has helped nearly 8,900 families during the past 26 years. Our second House, located on the 6th floor of Mercy Children’s Hospital, has welcomed over 800 families since November 30, 2012.

RMHC’s second cornerstone project, the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile®, (fondly known as the “Tooth Truck”), provides den-tal treatment and prevention education for children that qualify for the free and reduced school lunch program in the Springfield area. The Tooth Truck has helped 16,800 children over the past 12 years through 41,300 dental appointments and treatment valued at nearly $9.7 million. The Tooth Truck’s new Daily Tooth-Brush-ing Program already has 650 participants at Springfield Public Schools and the Boys & Girls Club of West Plains.

McDonald Houses have already welcomed over 700 families this year; the Tooth Truck has helped more than 1,200 children; and there are 650 children brushing their teeth every day as participants in our Brushing Program. None of this would be possible without the thousands of people who have

Heart the Housesby Adopting a Room

With two Ronald McDonald Houses in Springfield (one near Cox South and one in Mercy Chil-dren’s Hospital), Ronald McDonald House Charities® of the Ozarks has provided a home-away-from-home for nearly 9,500 families. In car-ing for their seriously ill or injured child, moms and dads experience one of life’s greatest challenges, and more than ever, they need support.

You have the unique opportu-nity to lead the crusade in helping these families support their child on the path to wellness. Ronald McDonald House Charities cares for more than 800 families each year, and we need your help pre-paring for 2015. We encourage you to Heart the Houses by Adopting a Room for 2015 in one (or both) of our Ronald McDonald Houses. By Adopting a Room, you are letting these families know that you are

behind them 100% as they battle fear and uncertainty, all the while trying to remain positive for their child, who faces trials no child should. You are directly provid-ing a sanctuary for tired bodies and minds so families can gather strength and continue being the foundation their seriously ill or injured child desperately needs.

These families are in need of comfort and hope, and most espe-cially, a home close to their child. Adopting a Room for next year means more to families staying at the Ronald McDonald Houses than you can imagine. Whether you adopt the kitchen to provide a place for nourishment, a living room to allow for relaxation or a bedroom to bring rest, you are placing yourself on the front lines in the battle for our families and their children.

The Traver family found comfort and hope at the House near Cox South while Peeka received treatment at St. Jude Affiliate Clinic at Mercy Children’s Hospital. (Peeka, Patten & Joia Traver)

Shonda, Kiko, and Savannah Diaz, from Thayer, MO, found a “home away from home” at the Ronald McDonald House near Cox South as they awaited the arrival of triplets! On June 10, 2014, the Diaz family welcomed David, Junior and Trey Diaz into their family.

How ToHeart The Houses

Presleys Country Jubilee Onstage in Fantastic Caverns

Last Fall, our Ronald McDonald Houses benefited from a piece of history when Branson’s First Fam-ily of Entertainment, the Presleys, returned to a venue where they performed over half a century ago. The Presleys Country Jubilee Onstage in Fantastic Caverns took place in Fantastic Caverns’ Au-ditorium Room, a natural under-ground theater that over the years has hosted events ranging from country music shows to live opera and symphony performances. The November 17th event was televised on the national cable/satellite net-works RFD-TV and Family Net. All proceeds – 100 percent – benefited Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Ozarks, resulting in a gift exceeding $15,000!

The show was a signa-ture Presleys’ evening of family fun with a blend of country, gospel and blue-grass music and comedy with a talented cast of 18 entertainers, seven of whom are members of the Presley family. Many audience members in the packed house recalled their visit to the cave 50 years ago to enjoy a Presleys’ show. Gary Presley, better known to Presleys’ audi-ences as the comedian Her-kimer, performed with his family at Fantastic Caverns in the 1960s, grew up in nearby northwest Spring-field and he and his wife, Pat, were dating at the time. He also worked as a cave guide when he was 16, so Fantastic Caverns holds a lot of memories for him. Prior to opening their Branson theatre in 1967, the Presleys performed regularly at the cave from 1962 to 1966 on a radio

program called “Farmarama”.Fantastic Caverns, America’s

only ride-through cave, is a small family attraction located just northwest of Springfield. The staff and management of the popular tourist destination work hard to preserve the cave and its fragile ecosystem so it will be in place for our children and grandchildren to enjoy for years to come. Fantastic Caverns hosted an event entitled “Enchanted Caverns” 26 years ago to help raise funds for Springfield’s first Ronald McDonald House near Cox South.

Our sincere gratitude goes to the entire Presley Family and our friends at Fantastic Caverns for sharing this amazing event with our organization and families!

Remember the excitement of school picture day, picking out the perfect outfit and hoping you look just right? Imagine you were so embarrassed of your smile that you opted out of picture day, hoping your teeth might look better for a retake later in the year. We recent-ly met a beautiful, 6-year-old girl named Jasmine who was hoping that her bad teeth would either fall out or be fixed so that she could have a “pretty smile” for the spring school pictures.

Jasmine came to us with 13 cavities, including several on her front teeth with black areas in between each tooth.  Her Mom explained that the family had Med-icaid for Jasmine several years ago and had a few cavities fixed but then circumstances caused them to not qualify for Medicaid be-fore all the other cavities could be repaired.   During her cleaning and diagnosis appointment, Jasmine asked several times about fixing her front teeth and so we decided that we would start our treatment with that area.  After the visit to fix her front teeth, Jasmine left the Tooth Truck overjoyed with the results and couldn’t wait to show her teacher and for the end of the day so that she could show her Mom.  The next day, Jasmine and her Mom came to the Tooth Truck

Jasmine’s Pretty Smile

for an after-school appointment and her mother had tears in her eyes as she thanked the staff for giving her daughter back a “pretty smile”.  It was then we learned of Jasmine’s wish for her next picture day.

In all, Jasmine’s treatment on the Tooth Truck consisted of 8 composite fillings, 3 pulpotomy and crowns on severely decayed primary (baby) molars, and 2 extractions of primary molars that were decayed beyond the point of being repaired.  Her treatment took 5 appointments to complete for a treatment value of $3,744. During each appointment, Jasmine learned the importance of brushing and flossing and how she can always have a pretty smile.  At the end of

Shore Power Connections ($1,800 ea.) These allow the Tooth Truck to plug into a power source rather than running off a generator.

each appointment, Jasmine asked to look in a mirror so she could see her new “pretty teeth”.  Come spring picture retakes, Jasmine will be ready to let her new, cavity-free, smile shine!

Sertoma All-Star Weekend Supports Tooth Truck

The first weekend in June saw another successful Sertoma All-Star Weekend with the 13th annual GRIN IRON CLASSIC (GIC) and the 3rd annual GRIN ACTION CLAS-SIC (GAC), held at Parkview High School in Springfield. Presented by generous sponsors, Delta Dental of Missouri and the Heart of the Ozarks Sertoma Club, these events are hosted by the All-Star Smiles Sertoma Club, the SW MO High School Football Coaches Associa-tion, and local volleyball coaches.

After days and days of rain, the skies cleared for the GRIN IRON CLASSIC, the all-star high school football game for SW MO. Over 80 graduated seniors competed in an East-West competition at JFK Stadi-um in front of a crowd that neared 4,000 fans. For the second time in 13 years, the East defeated the West, 40-27. The next day on Sat-urday, June 7, five teams competed during the GRIN ACTION CLASSIC girls’ all-star high school volleyball tournament. The new Springfield team was victorious over the South

team in the championship game, after 5 rounds of play.

The biggest winners of all are the children of the Tooth Truck. This year’s events raised over $56,000 to help keep our program on the road. Our special thanks go out to the sponsors, players, par-ents, coaches, fans and volunteers for another great year. See pages 16-18 for a listing of our contribu-tors over the past two years.

Would you like to see our GIC-GAC player profiles and rosters? Visit www.issuu.com and search on “Grin Iron Classic”. Under “Pub-lications” you will see our event programs.

ANOTHER Record-BreakingShare a Heart Campaign!

The 21st annual Share a Heart Campaign, held January 24-Febru-ary 28 at more than 60 McDonald’s Restaurants in the Ozarks, broke records once again this year!. The Campaign’s net proceeds surpassed the $130,000 mark –- all to sup-port more than 800 families that will find a home away from home this year at the Ronald McDonald House near Cox South and the House at Mercy. In addition to McDonald’s® amazing customers and employees, our special thanks also goes out to new co-presenting sponsor, Youngblood Auto Group, for their significant role in this year’s successful campaign!

The walls and windows of McDonald’s Restaurants in SW MO and NW AR were covered with $1 red paper hearts, $5 pink hearts and $20 gold hearts, all represent-ing generous Ronald McDonald House donations to the tune of $108,565!. (Our gratitude goes out once again to 21-year printing sponsor, McCann Printing!) With each heart purchased, customers received an Official Entry Form for a chance to win a $1,000 gift card provided by Leadership Sponsor, Great Southern Bank and the lucky winner was Angela Wynn of Wil-lard, MO.

Our heartfelt thanks goes out to generous sponsors (see logos at right), and the thousands of McDonald’s customers, Ozarks’

media, our “Share a Heart Fami-lies” who shared their stories, and nearly 40 mayors in the Ozarks who proclaimed February 4-10 “Ronald McDonald House Week”. (See pages 14-15 in this issue of the LOVE LETTER for a complete list-ing of contributors.)

Finnegan had a long respiratory stay. I developed inflammation of the fetal membranes due to a bacte-rial infection from being ruptured for so long, as well as a very severe form of funisitis where the tissue that makes up the umbilical cord starts to die. Because of these se-vere infections, Finnegan was born with Pneumonia and multiple oth-er lung infections. During his NICU stay, he developed Bronchopulmo-nary Dysplasia. BPD involves ab-normal development of lung tissue. It develops in premature babies with underdeveloped lungs. It also can be caused by trauma, pneumo-nia, and other lung infections that cause inflammation and scarring. Although he needed mechanical ventilation to survive, over time the pressure and excess oxygen can damage the lungs.

In total we spent 80 days in the NICU. That’s 12 weeks. Eight of those weeks I lived at the Ronald McDonald House. I looked for-ward to every night at 6pm when volunteers from the community would provide dinner at the House. As tired as we all were, having a hot meal to look forward to was great. It gave me the energy to get through the rest of the night.

Once Finnegan was stable, I chose to move back home for the remainder of his stay for our other son Sterling, who is 13, and my husband. Having a split household was hard mentally and emotion-ally. Zach needed his wife, and Sterling needed his mom. I still spent each day at the NICU and went home at night.

On May 10th, Mother’s Day, Finnegan was allowed to finally eat by mouth for the first time. I couldn’t have asked for a better Mother’s Day present. The nurses said not to get too excited; that it would be hard for him to breast-feed and we’d probably be there another month or so.

That was not the case with Mr. Finnegan. He took off eating and we were discharged 5 days later. He left the hospital weighing 6 lbs, 10 oz, and now is over 14 lbs. I love going to visit and showing off Finnegan. The staff and the volun-teers are so amazing and you can tell they truly love their jobs. With-out the Ronald McDonald House, it wouldn’t have been possible for me to have the 24-hour access to my baby. Being with him all the time, I feel it helped him develop and grow into the strong boy he is today.

NICU team worked seamlessly get-ting me ready to deliver our baby. After a tumultuous delivery, I gave birth to Finnegan Laney White. He weighed 2.6 pounds and was 15 inches long. Finnegan was taken to the NICU and placed on a ventila-tor. I was able to go see him after 3 hours of recovery. The nurse said I could put my hand through the hole in the incubator and touch him. I’ve never been so scared in my life. He was covered with wires and tubes and there were flash-ing lights and alarms going off. It was so much to take in. The nurse shared information about staying at the Ronald McDonald House, but unfortunately it was full. I didn’t understand how it worked or what it really was about. I was dis-charged from the hospital the fol-lowing morning. I experienced the most unspeakable feeling. Leaving the hospital without your baby is unbearable. No parent should ever feel that pain and emptiness. That was the longest night at home, and I couldn’t wait until the next day to get back to the NICU to be with Finnegan.

The next day, a room opened up at the House and I met Alexis, the House Manager. She was so nice and caring. She took me on the tour and I couldn’t believe how incredible this place was. It had a huge kitchen, TVs, a playroom and a laundry room that was out of this world. When we got to the bedrooms, I just couldn’t believe it: Tempur-Pedic beds, mini-fridge, and a private bathroom. It made me feel right at home. In fact it was better because I was able to have 24-hour access to my baby that was only one floor away. That night I stayed at the House and was able to go to the NICU and spend time with Finnegan. From that night on, I knew I could call the Ronald Mc Donald House my new home. Finnegan was only allowed to be touched every 4 hours, so in between his touch times I was able to rest my head on a comfortable bed and reenergize myself. They even provided hospital-grade breast pumps.

Shown left to right are Finnegan’s father, Zach; his brother, Sterling; and mother, Ashley.

Jan Ricketts (left) and Vivian Carissimo, better known as Mrs. C, knew each other LONG before they started volunteering at the House near Cox South. They both started volunteering for different reasons, but asked to volunteer on the same shift so that they could stay connected. Hunter Richards from Field Elementary selected the Ronald McDonald House for her action plan for school. She researched our mission and programs then raised awareness with her fellow classmates on how they can help by collecting pop tabs. Funds from the collected pop tabs benefit the Family Fund, which is used to help families with immediate personal needs.

The Tooth Truck provides a brushing cling and instructional card in every child’s dental supply bag, thanks to support from Care to Learn. Every child participating in the Brushing Program also takes one home. These tools give patients a daily reminder of the steps needed to properly care for their teeth.

Family Dinner Program volunteers make it possible for our families to come “home” to a warm, home-cooked meal each evening. Crighton, Olive, & Dunn Surgical Group and Courageous Church-IServe are two of 142 groups who have served meals at the Houses this year. The strength and nourishment each meal provides to our families is immeasurable.

Volunteers are a vital part of the Tooth Truck program. They work one-on-one with patients, safely walk them to and from their dental appointment and help address self-esteem issues. Individuals from the community, such as retired schoolteacher Connie, generously give of their time each week to make a lasting impact on our patients.
