Verdi’s consumptive courtesan Violetta returns to our stage in a completely new production of La traviata. Relive this powerful tale of love and sacrifice. Famous arias and grand choruses like “Sempre libera” and the brilliant “Libiamo” have made La traviata one of the most frequently produced operas in the world.

Join us at Prince Orlofsky’s masked ball where intrigue and romance are in the air, elaborate plots are uncorked, and, by dawn, all of the guests end up in jail! Luckily things are resolved by the final chorus as all join in song to honor champagne. Filled with colorful polkas, drinking songs, and waltzes, Die Fledermaus is a Viennese operetta masterpiece and a great way to kick off the holiday season.

A modern classic since its premiere in 2000, Dead Man Walking is the story of a nun’s journey as the spiritual advisor of a convicted murderer on death row. From the shocking opening scene to the searing finale, this opera changes everyone who encounters it. Dead Man Walking, composed by Jake Heggie with libretto by Terrence McNally, is based on Sister Helen Prejean’s 1993 account of her work on death row at the Louisiana State Penitentiary. The popularity of the opera can be credited not only to the timeless relevance of its subject and the humanity of its story, but also to how successfully the composer and librettist have captured the essence and impact of the novel in an intense musical and dramatic setting.

A blockbuster success since it debuted in 1900, Tosca has been an opera-fan-favorite for more than a century.

Floria Tosca is a fiery diva whose life is equal parts drama and passion, played out against a background of political intrigue. She takes matters into her own hands, but with disastrous results. With stunning arias, towering musical climaxes, and gripping drama, Puccini’s brilliant score brings Tosca’s emotional extremes into sharp relief as the story rushes toward its thrilling conclusion. Famously described by experts as a “shabby little shocker,” this captivating melodrama grabs you from the start, making it an ideal opera for both newcomers and aficionados alike.

GET INVOLVED!Women’s Guild The Women’s Guild is a major contributor to the New Orleans Opera Association and produces fundraisers such as the Jazz Brunch, Opera Ball, and Mad Hatter’s Luncheon. The Guild is housed in a beautiful Garden District mansion where members enjoy attending meetings and social functions and spend many hours in volunteer service. There are several broad areas of services, a myriad of opportunities, and varying levels of responsibility from which a member can choose to use her talent, skill, and time. As an encouragement to younger generations, the Women’s Guild sponsors the Junior Committee.

Junior Committee The Junior Committee inspires, educates, and encourages young women to strengthen the local arts and cultural community by supporting New Orleans Opera Association through educational and fundraising programs.

The Opera Club The New Orleans Opera Club offers an elegant venue for members and guests to support the New Orleans Opera Association financially and to enjoy dinners and parties in the Guild Home. A defined portion of each member’s dues is a contribution to the Opera Association. In addition, opportunities are provided for opera lovers to socialize with the stars and to enjoy seasonal celebrations in a formal setting.

MetroPelicanOpera in the classroom and the classroom at the Opera!

MetroPelican Opera, the education/outreach wing of the New Orleans Opera Association, was founded in 1988 by Arthur Cosenza. He chose “Metro” to represent the seven-parish population base of New Orleans, and “Pelican” for the state bird. MetroPelican has subsequently toured throughout Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas. Since 1999 we have also been offering free student nights at the Opera – our Preview Performances – which are the final dress rehearsals of each of our main stage productions.

Youth Vocal CompetitionThe New Orleans Opera Association has created an annual youth vocal competition for all Louisiana high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors for the academic year of 2015-2016. The competition is a collaborative effort with Loyola University New Orleans – College of Music and Fine Arts and Preparatory Program (Loyola), Newcomb Department of Music, Tulane University (Tulane), and The New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA).

Student submission deadline is 9/4/15, and the competition date is 10/17/15.
