Galapagos Islands-physical map

The Galápagos is an archipel formed by 16 islands in the Pacific Ocean, 600miles west of Equador. The origin of these islands is a rock called Pennacle Rock. It´s origin is volcanic because the islands erupted from the movement of two tectonic plates. The Andes Mountain Range that comes from the western coast of South America, continues in the Galapagos. The longitude of Galapagos is 0º 54’ S and the latitude is 89º 36’ W.

The population of the islands increased a lot in the past years.

It is now 9,735.

This cretaed a problem of overpopulation that is bad for the environment because it affects the natural ecosystem. Besides, the commerce fishing brought pollution and a huge natural disaster which was an oil spill that happenned in 2001, killed many animals from different species.

Human Environment Interaction

The Galapagos is one of the places in the world that is part of The World Heritage List for two reasons: because it is a very old ecosystem that is important for scientists to study, and because Darwin first became interested in his Theory of Evolution when he saw the animals in these islands. They looked vey pre-historical, like the marine iguanas and the giant Tortoises. Nature is kept untouched, like it always has been from the beginning of the world.

Movement

Tourists like to go to Galapagos Islands because the fauna and flora are beautiful and rare.

But the Government wants to keep the islands with a small population to protect the ecosystem. This way, there is less pollution and less changes in the natural environment.

Galapagos facts Darwin started to research in Galapagos because of the iguanas and the giant turtles There is a mountain that goes through the hole western side of South America and Galápagos is the continuation of the mountain. Many people come to Galapagos because of the nature and incredible animals, and the fresh fish people can find there.
