Post Commander, John Hyde VOLUME 2016 ISSUE 3 March 2016 www.post44.com • [email protected] Lounge (480) 941-9053 Office (480) 941-0130 Well it is hard to believe that is March already. The third annual Post 44 Golf tournament is on for the 11th at Continental Golf course, the cost is $75.00. This includes lunch at the Post trophy’s and other attractions. I do hope you will support Ron Ayers as he has really worked hard on this and it is his third year as golf chairman. This does supply much needed revenue for our Post. I also want to remind everyone that we have a great web page (www.post44.com) this will have more current information than the newsletter. I also remind all Post 44 members that our general meeting is 24th of March at 6:00PM. The nominations committee chaired by Neal Sundeen along with member’s Wayne Doerr and Roland Coulombe will present the list of candidates for Post officers for 2016-2017. They will posted on the Post web site. The nominations are closed at this point per the bylaws. The elections will be held 14th of April 2016. The officers elected will take office at the end of June 2016. I remind all appointed officer’s that your term ends in June also, this gives the incoming Commander to make His/her choices. I do hope that the incoming Officers understand the Commanders and elected officers responsibilities are not ceremonial and requires a good amount of time at the Post. I also hope that you will support the new Commander and confine your talk at the bar to a minimum. This talk at the bar with assumptions, half-truths and scuttlebutt does no good for the Post. Walk in the office and ask your question. I say thank you to all the members of Post 44 for your support. We have come a long way in the last five years. When I started our Flag program on Scottsdale Road no business that I contacted knew who we were and what we did. They were surprised when I told them. The bright spots for me is the rapport we have established with the Scottsdale Police Dept, The Post was recognized by the Scottsdale Area Chamber of Commerce which as a VSO it was a very nice honor as now the community knows who we are and what we do. I know there has been talk about why do we have to look nice quote “This is a Post”. I hope all understands that when you invite your neighbor is it not nice to walk in to a clean, shiny place and have prime rib dinner at a reasonable price? Be Proud of your Post we do have a shining star in the desert. I hope that you will continue to support our Police Dept as these front line responder’s are tireless supporters and deserve all we can give them. I and my wife Maude have worked very hard to assist Post 44 in growing and supplying needed services to all our Veterans, we grew from Legion membership of about 774 in 2010 to 1068 in 2015 and looks like we could hit 1090 in 2016., and we made 100% the last four years. And could make it this year,. “Not too Bad “We spent our five years here at the Post and all its functions and now we can leave knowing that we did our best, “What else is there” ? “ Age wrinkles the body, quitting wrinkles the soul”- General Douglas MacArthur Keep our Troops and their families in your prayers. When I started our Flag program on Scottsdale Road no business that I contacted knew who we were and what we did. They were surprised when I told them. Sr. Vice Commander – Mike Hatounian

On March 5th we will be kicking off the month with a great returning entertainer Harry Mathews. Not only is Harry funny he will get you up out of your chair and want to dance. I have reserved the banquet room for this special evening and recommend our members and guest make reservations two weeks in advance. Harry was here last October and every-one loved him. Our regular menu will be available so please plan on enjoying an unforgettable evening with us at Post 44.

We also will be celebrating Saint Patrick’s Day on Thursday evening March 17th with the music of our very own Randy Thomas. Randy makes every oc-casion very special and we will enjoy the traditional food that evening.

I would also like to thank our volunteers for all the hard work they do. The broadest, and maybe the most meaningful definition of volunteering: Doing more than you have to because you want to, in a cause you consider good. That saying is so true. You have no idea how the wheels would stop to turn with-out you. I know and thank you.

I wish our members, their family and friends a very happy Easter. Please remember our troops in your prayers. They need us to do that for them.

SAL Commander – Ed Wallace

Hello everyone! Wow! We are at 90% renewal for 2016! Thank you for your support and if you have not paid your 2016 dues, please do so as soon as possible. You need your 2016 card to use the Post facilities. Mail dues in or bring it to the Club and give it to the bartender on duty so I can get your card to you. It’s great being ahead of the curve. If you’re not busy on Thursday nights, come on down for Bar Bingo at 6:30p. Get a bite to eat and bring a friend! It’s a lot of fun! Just a reminder, the SAL meeting is at 7:00p on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. Thanks for being a part of “The Best in the West” Scottsdale Post 44.

Our annual trip to Camp Navajo and Snow Bowl provided another series of adventures with the wonderful snow that was available this year. Lots of great snowboarding coupled with the adven-tures of trying to find an open seat in town. We had dinner in town after the slopes and enjoyed getting back to Camp Navajo. We started the preparation meetings for our high adventure trip to the Boy Scout Sea Base in St. Thomas, US Vir-gin Islands in June and for July’s summer camp at Mataguay Scout Reservation in Southern Cali-fornia. Let’s all focus on the RED BUCKET this month. If everyone coming through the front door at Post 44, this month, brings a can of food, we will have a bountiful donation for the children of Veterans at Veterans First, Ltd. Keep the RED BUCKET full!

moves on: nor all thy Piety nor wit,

shall lure it back to cancel half a line,

nor all thy tears wash out a word of it...”

Edward Fitzgerald (1809-1883) edited from Omar Khayyam.

Auxiliary Corner, President Ellen Etzel

Parada del Sol was lots of fun, as usual! It is a great way to get the Auxiliary name out there and literally exposes our presence to thousands of people. The vintage cars always draw lots of attention and we thank those owners, (Barney Etzel and John Riley) who donated both their time and autos for the event! There has been some talk of adding a float next year, so if anyone has any ideas, please share them.

The Past Commanders’/Past Presidents’ Dinner was lovely. It is a wonderful way to show our appreciation to those who devoted so much time and energy to make this post/unit such a success.

At our March 14th meeting, we will be appointing a Nomination Committee to solicit nominees for officers for the 2016-2017 unit year. If you are interested in being nominated, or you know someone who is interested in being nominated, please attend that meeting.

No article this month.
