Welcome to Term 2
As we happily say goodbye to summer, Term 2 beckons with some exciting new workshops and exhibitions. Take a look inside and see if you can find something to kindle your interest.
And don’t forget the next time you come to the Centre to have a look at our little library; situated next to the ramp. There are books for all age groups to share. We were lucky that our talented volunteer, artist Jordyn Parker decorated our library for us!

Printmaker Kate Gorringe Smith is working with
Hobsons Bay City Council’s Arts and Culture team
on an exhibition of prints for the Overwintering
Project. The Overwintering Project seeks to raise
awareness of our migratory shorebirds and their
habitats by inviting artists to help make them more
visible. Overwintering is a national project which
has involved artists in exhibitions and events across
Australia.

Produce Bags Learn how to make a weightless knitting produce bag perfect for a trip to the fruit and veggie
store. A great way to ditch the plastic produce bags without having to wrestle loose fruit at the
cash register. This workshop requires some knitting skills. Pattern and material supplied.

Rag Rugs Workshop Recycle old clothes or fabric into a fantastic braided rag rug. In this workshop you will learn how
to braid your own unique floor covering that can be made to fit a small or large space. Bring
along a selection of fabric in a couple of complementary colours – cotton sheets, shirts or
pillowcases are ideal.

Beeswax Wraps Make your own reusable beeswax wraps as an alternative to cling wrap and zip lock bags in the
kitchen. Perfect for wrapping food to keep it fresh, the wraps are washable and biodegradable.

Upcycled Worm Farm Workshop Learn how to create your own low-cost worm farms using recycled materials such as polystyrene
and poly pipe. Worm farms are great for reducing landfill and the castings and juice produced by
a worm farm are an invaluable fertiliser for the vegie garden. Session will cover different ways to
set up your worm farm and how to keep your worms happy and healthy.

Natural Dyeing Workshop Explore the possibilities of natural dyeing in this workshop series looking at dyeing fabric/textiles
using natural items such as local plants and kitchen scraps. Learn about the different steps in the

Upcycled T-Shirt Necklace Create your own unique necklace. Bring along a couple of worn out t-shirts and learn how to
transform them into a necklace – four designs to choose from.

Repair Café Have something in need of repair? A hole in your favourite top or comfiest pair of jeans; a plant
in need of some TLC, or perhaps you need advice on DIY repairs around the home, come along to
the Altona Repair Café where our volunteers will do their best to give your ailing item a new
lease on life. This session is about sharing skills and knowledge, reducing waste and reviving the
art of repair. A full list of repair items will be available closer to the date.
As part of the session, Roving Refills will be bringing their bulk refill shop on wheels to the
Centre! Bring along your empty containers to fill up with environmentally friendly cleaning

WinterFest A celebration of Jane Austen & the Regency period

Join us at the Louis Joel and the Altona Homestead this
July to experience Christmas the way Jane Austen would
have celebrated during the Regency period. A two week
long celebration to help keep the winter blues away
featuring guest speakers, events, exhibitions, Christmas
trees and a Christmas market. Enjoy a taste of the
holiday season with gingerbread decorating, eat a warm
mince pie, drink mulled apple cider and make your own
Christmas decoration.
