Lotto NRFL 2015 Welcome

It’s back to a full house in the Lotto NRFL this weekend with a complete round of fixtures taking place in all four divisions!

With the business end of the season rapidly approaching, there are many key matches in store that could define the campaigns of the sides involved. There are only five rounds remaining in the Women’s Premier so every point is of significance from here on in, especially at the top with several clubs still in the running for the title. Claudelands Rovers and Western Springs are two of those sides and their meeting at Galloway Park will take most of the limelight on Sunday. There is a match of similar standing in the men’s Premier League on Saturday with defending champions Glenfield Rovers playing host to Central United. These teams are third and fourth on the ladder respectively and need to win to keep the pressure on the leading duo, Eastern Suburbs and Hamilton Wanderers. The Division One highlight is Ellerslie’s trip to the mount to face Tauranga City United while there are a pair of massive fixtures in Division Two as Manukau City meet Oratia United and North Force face Papakura City. In the programme this week, we preview these games and all others, as well as featuring photos from Phototek of two recent matches. In the spotlight were Mt Albert-Ponsonby’s stirring comeback in a 3-3 draw with Hibiscus Coast in Division One and Lynn-Avon United’s narrow 1-0 win over Papatoetoe in the Women’s Premier. As always, we also have all the up-to-date tables, team progress graphs, golden boot charts and squads so there is a wealth of info at your fingertips! Our Lotto NRFL social media platforms continue to be the place to go for all score updates, results, goal details and other news – be sure to tag us @LottoNRFL with your updates from the sideline! Good luck for your game!

Programme 2015

East Coast Bays vs Western Springs

Bay City Park | Saturday 18 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Bruce Horrox Assistant Referees: Mazhar Batoor, Wandyk Freitas

After putting together a winning run of six matches, Springs are now in a mini form slump. A 4-2 loss to Eastern Suburbs was swiftly followed by a 3-2 defeat to Hamilton Wanderers but coach Neil Emblen will take heart from the fact that both those sides are title contenders. East Coast Bays do not possess the same quality but, with Springs only two points ahead, this is likely to be a tight one nonetheless.

Three Kings United vs Waitakere City Keith Hay Park | Saturday 18 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Hayden Tutbury Assistant Referees: Allan Wilson, Eric Yu

Three Kings are looking to bounce back from the disappointment of getting knocked out of the cup and will be heavy favourites to do so against a side appearing certainties for relegation. Waitakere were not involved in an official match last weekend so took part in a friendly against North Shore United instead. But that did not bring the confidence boost they might have hoped for with the Division One high fliers running out 4-2 winners.

Eastern Suburbs vs Melville United Madills Farm | Saturday 18 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Campbell Kirk-Waugh Assistant Referees: Avnit Maharaj, Ravi Prasad

Suburbs’ dream season continued with a win over Division One Tauranga in the cup last weekend, meaning they are still on track for a rare league and cup double. With Hamilton and Glenfield – who are both out of the cup – breathing down their necks though, they must be careful not to let their cup exploits distract them from their title bid. The chances of a Melville win appear slim though as they still have just three points to their name.

Glenfield Rovers vs Central United McFetridge Park | Saturday 18 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Mark Owens Assistant Referees: Jeremy Ferguson, Steve Merriman

Like Suburbs, Central are chasing success on two fronts. Their impressive pedigree in the Chatham Cup – they have won it five times – makes them real contenders for that crown but they are underdogs when it comes to the league title. José Figueira’s side are only four points off the top though and a win here against one of the other contenders would put them right in the mix.

Bay Olympic vs Birkenhead United Olympic Park | Saturday 18 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Martin Neale Assistant Referees: Martin Huang, Pat Barrett

These sides are sitting smack in the middle of the table and will be targeting a strong finish to the campaign to push for the top four. Birkenhead also have a cup quarter-final against Central to look forward to and will want to get some wins under their belt to take confidence into that season-defining clash. After a summer of widespread change, anything better than mid-table would be pleasing for the Bay.

Hamilton Wanderers vs Onehunga Sports Porritt Stadium | Saturday 18 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Chris Wolken Assistant Referees: Carl Watkins, Dominic Hopkirk

These teams were both involved in the only two Premier League matches to take place last weekend and recorded similar results, each scoring three goals on their way to victories. This is a key match for Wanderers as leaders Eastern Suburbs are a point ahead but have a game in hand on all other title challengers. The hosts therefore need three points to keep the pressure on but will not find that easy as Sports haven’t lost for four matches.

Claudelands Rovers vs Western Springs

Galloway Park | Sunday 19 July | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Paul Shakes Assistant Referees: Dominic Hopkirk, Sean Coon

Claudelands can afford to lose this and still be sitting pretty at the top of the table but it’s a different story for Western Springs, for whom defeat would spell the end of their faint title hopes. They are already six points behind the leaders and, with Claudelands having lost just once all season, if that stretches to nine then Springs would appear to have no hope of catching them. Rovers have proved there is more to their attack than 19-goal Helen Collins as Kate Loye and Bethanee Witt are also amongst the top scorers.

Norwest United vs Lynn-Avon United Huapai Reserve | Sunday 19 July | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Johanna O’Connor Assistant Referees: Jay Fu, Robin Van Niekerk

Prior to the season kicking off, you would have picked Lynn-Avon as the favourites for this one but promoted Norwest have competed well in this division, only ever really being outclassed by the heavyweight sides. Lynn-Avon don’t fall into that category this season and the sides drew 1-1 last time around so appear evenly matched. Norwest have a much better attacking record than Lynn-Avon but have conceded far more goals so it’s difficult to pick a winner.

Glenfield Rovers vs Eastern Suburbs McFetridge Park | Sunday 19 July | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Chris McDermott Assistant Referees: Jeremy Ferguson, Rhys Kimber

Glenfield did themselves no favours in the previous round with a 1-0 loss to reigning champions Forrest Hill-Milford in a real six pointer and they now appear out of the title running. They still have a good chance of defending the Knockout Cup though and will want to take some good league form into their quarter-final next month. That cup tie could well be against Suburbs – who need to get past Western Springs to book their place – so this is a chance to land an early psychological blow.

Papatoetoe vs Three Kings United Murdoch Park | Sunday 19 July | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Wendy McNeely Assistant Referees: Free Diao, Hilary Osborne

Papatoetoe gave their hopes of staying up a massive boost by beating Fencibles in the battle of the bottom and, with their relegation worries somewhat eased, can now play with more freedom in the remaining weeks of the season. Goalkeeper Danielle Bradley achieved success in another field last week as part of Auckland Football’s title-defending U-19 side at the National Youth Futsal Championships and will be hoping to bring that winning mentality into the Papatoetoe camp.

Fencibles United vs Forrest Hill-Milford United Riverhills Park | Sunday 19 July | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Neil Tobin Assistant Referees: Paul Mason, Allan Tobin

After falling to yet another defeat against Papatoetoe, the fate of Fencibles now appears to have been sealed and their main motivation will be to bow out of the division with some honour and dignity intact. A strong showing against the reigning champions would be an ideal way to start doing that but Forrest Hill are likely to be in a ruthless frame of mind as they need the points to stay on the coattails of leaders Claudelands. Fencibles would love to be able to field Football Ferns striker Rosie White but she has now departed for English Super League side Liverpool.

50 Years of Local Pride

Programme 2015

Metro vs Takapuna

Phyllis Street | Friday 17 July | Kick-off: 7.30pm | Referee: Nick Waldron Assistant Referees: Mark Fisher, Faiyaz Ali

Metro will be hurting after suffering the ignominy of being defeated by cellar dwellers Ngaruawahia, just the second side this season to fall to such a fate. It was a nightmare first half for Metro in that game as they found themselves three goals down at the break and they will need to start much more brightly against another of the relegation favourites. On paper, a home win would appear to be a safe bet but, given Metro’s previous showing, Takapuna will fancy their chances.

North Shore United vs Mt Albert-Ponsonby Allen Hill Stadium | Saturday 18 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Rajesh Kumar Assistant Referees: Wendy McNeely, Chris Casey

If anyone was still in doubt, North Shore provided further evidence of their quality with a friendly win over Premier League opponents Waitakere City last week and will be full of confidence for the visit of mid-table Mt Albert. The Blue and Golds clearly have plenty of character though, which they showed to come back from two goals behind and steal a 3-3 draw with Hibiscus Coast in the previous round.

Manurewa vs Ngaruawahia United Memorial Park | Saturday 18 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Vaughan Couillault Assistant Referees: Neil Tobin, Peter Caffell

Manurewa will have earmarked this game as one they should be taking three points from but Ngaruawahia’s showing last weekend may have made them think twice. With the threat of relegation hanging over both sides, this is a genuine six pointer and the other candidates for the drop will be keeping an eye out for this result. Manurewa welcome back midfield lynchpin Marvin Eakins, who has been away captaining the Futsal Whites in their recent internationals.

Hibiscus Coast vs Waiuku Stanmore Bay Park | Saturday 18 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Steven Black Assistant Referees: Richard Middleton, Peter Lamb

The Coasters will have been feeling low this week after letting victory slip through their fingers against Mt Albert and will be in no mood to let anything similar happen here. Waiuku had the chance to put their feet up last weekend and coach Jim Evans will hope the break has done his players a world of good. The hosts have a score to settle with Waiuku after being outclassed 5-1 in the sides’ previous meeting.

Tauranga City United vs Ellerslie Links Avenue | Sunday 19 July | Kick-off: 2.30pm | Referee: Avnit Maharaj Assistant Referees: Andrew Lamberth, William White

The footballing gods were not kind to Tauranga as they went out of the cup to Eastern Suburbs on penalties but there were plenty of positives for coach Duncan Lowry. His men proved they can compete at a higher level by pushing the Premier League leaders all the way in a 1-1 draw and Lowry will hope there isn’t a hangover in store in the wake of those exertions. With Ellerslie four points ahead but having played two more games than Tauranga, the outcome here could have a significant impact on the promotion race.

Mangere United vs Forrest Hill-Milford United Centre Park | Sunday 19 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Mark Fisher Assistant Referees: Chris Wolken, Riki Enosa

Mangere recently lost the services of striker Iwa Shaker, who has made the short switch to local rivals Papatoetoe, but there is still plenty of firepower in the likes of Sanni Issa, Ernesto Lopez and Souleymane Cissoko. Indeed, lovers of attacking football would be well advised to head to Centre Park for this encounter as Forrest Hill and Mangere have two of the best offensive records in the league.

Lotto NRFL Division 1 Preview Round 17

Claudelands Rovers vs Fencibles United

Galloway Park | Saturday 18 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Gordon Campbell Assistant Referees: Hubert Bakx, Matt Norton

In allowing third-from-bottom Onehunga-Mangere to leave with all three points last weekend, Fencibles missed a golden opportunity to exert some heat on the four sides above them and can’t afford any more slip-ups if they are to have any chance of promotion. Rovers’ recent home form has been poor with only one point taken and ten goals conceded in the last three games on their own patch.

Lynn-Avon United vs Te Atatu Ken Maunder Park | Saturday 18 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Ben Hill Assistant Referees: Charlie Tseng, Torres Chang

Lynn-Avon do not have fond memories of their last western derby – a 3-1 loss to Oratia a fortnight ago – but went on to steady the ship with a 1-1 draw at Albany. With the two teams closest to them on the table – Papatoetoe and Onehunga-Mangere – both having winnable games this weekend, a poor result for Lynn-Avon could see them cut further adrift.

Albany United vs Papatoetoe

Rosedale Park | Saturday 18 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: John McCoskrie Assistant Referees: Johanna O’Connor, Ben McInnes

This is an almost identical challenge to that faced by Albany in their previous outing as they are again coming up against a lowly side at home. They could not take full advantage last time with a draw against bottom-placed Lynn-Avon and will be kicking themselves if they take less than four points from this pair of games. Papatoetoe have pulled off a coup in signing Iwa Shaker and he made an instant impact with both goals in the 2-2 draw against North Force.

Manukau City vs Oratia United

Walter Massey Park | Saturday 18 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Andrew Lamberth Assistant Referees: Thomas Lee, Charles Nothnagel

This is one of two matches taking place this weekend that will have a huge bearing on the Division Two title chase, the other being Papakura’s trip to North Force. If they fail to return south with all three points, then Oratia could put themselves top with a win over Manukau. Anything close to the previous meeting between these sides will be a treat for the spectators as that was an exciting 4-4 draw.

Onehunga-Mangere United vs AFC Fury

Mangere Domain | Sunday 19 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Mazhar Batoor Assistant Referees: Ben Hill, Torres Chang

Onehunga-Mangere were pumped 8-1 by Papakura just a fortnight ago but responded in the best manner possible by upsetting Fencibles 2-0 a week later. Having shown such a strong sense of character to bounce back, the challenge now is to maintain those standards and embark on a run that will drag them away from the relegation fold. Fury’s record in Auckland is poor and they are coming off a pair of losses so the Mountain Men have reason to feel confident.

North Force vs Papakura City

Tikipunga Sports Park | Sunday 19 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Dimitry Sabitov Assistant Referees: Kieran Withers, Fidel Jaary

This is a massive game for both sides and is likely to be a defining moment in each of their campaigns. Title favourites Papakura are three points ahead of third-placed North Force but have two games in hand so an away win here would all but knock the hosts out of contention for the trophy. It is therefore a must-win for Force, who recovered from two goals down to draw at Papatoetoe last time out.
