① CHRISTIANS MUST CONTEND FOR THE FAITH (Jude 3-4)
In these words we see the following lessons: I. The Faith is Something Which is
Delivered to Us. Our faith was passed down to us from past generations. We did not discover its great principles and truths all by ourselves. The Christian faith originated with Jesus. He then entrusted it to his apostles (Heb. 2:3-4, Acts 2:42).

The Holy Spirit brought to their remembrance all he had said to them (John 14:26).
The apostles first taught and then recorded “the faith” in their books and epistles and placed it in the hands of the various congregations.

The things they wrote were the commandments of the Lord (I Cor. 14:37).
Loyal churches continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine (Acts 2:42).

II. Our Faith Was Delivered Once and For All.
The Christian faith is an unchangeable commodity.
It is permanent and enduring. It never needs revision as men’s creeds do. It is always relevant, never obsolete.
Topic: Lost in the House of GodTopic: Lost in the House of God
These facts are true because of its divine origin. Jesus is the author and perfecter of our faith (Heb. 12:2). He is eternal and unchanging (Heb. 13:8) and so is his word (Matt. 24:35).
Christianity is a completed system and allows no additions or deletions.

We are forbidden to go beyond what is written (I Cor. 4:6 ASV). Those who go beyond the doctrine of Christ have not God (2 John 9-10).
Curses rest upon those who either add to or take from the faith of Jesus (Rev 22:18-19).
Scripture is not of private interpretation
(II Pet. 1:20-21).

② PROVE ALL THINGS (1 Thess 5:21,22) 1 Thess 5:21,22 is composed of three
instructions for all Christians: 1) “Prove all things,” 2) “Hold fast that which is good,” 3) “Abstain from all appearance of evil.”

② PROVE ALL THINGS (1 Thess 5:21,22) “Prove all things,” what does the word
“prove” mean? It means to put to the test. We find the same word in 1 John 4:1
where it is written that Christians are to “try the spirits whether they are of God”

② PROVE ALL THINGS (1 Thess 5:21,22) In the context of 1 Thessalonians 5:21,
what would be included in the “all things” that are to be proven? In verse 18 “the will of God” is mentioned, in verse 19 the message is, “Quench not the Spirit,”

② PROVE ALL THINGS (1 Thess 5:21,22) and verse 20 is, “Despise not
prophesyings.” So, when it came to the will of God and claims to be led by the Spirit or speak prophetic utterances, the early saints were to “prove all things.”

② PROVE ALL THINGS (1 Thess 5:21,22) In fact, any time a person teaches a
religious message, we need to turn to the Book and test/try the spirits to see if they harmonize with the genuine will of God recorded in the New Testament (I John 4:1).

② PROVE ALL THINGS (1 Thess 5:21,22) Let us look further. “Hold fast to that
which is good.” This reminds us of the exhortation to “cleave to that which is good” (Rom. 12:9). To hold fast or cleave indicates that we grab on to it and do not let go!

② PROVE ALL THINGS (1 Thess 5:21,22) Again, to what are we to hold fast?
Answer: “that which is good.” Well, everybody’s got their own opinion about what “good” means, right? That may be true, but the only One whose assessment of “good” counts is God’s!

② PROVE ALL THINGS (1 Thess 5:21,22) It is to God’s standard of good that we
must hold fast. Just as God told the Israelites to do that which was right and good in His sight (Deut. 6:18), so Christians must turn to the Lord’s true doctrine to find God’s standard of good.

② PROVE ALL THINGS (1 Thess 5:21,22) In order for you and me to hold fast to that which is
good, we must (1) Have an adequate knowledge of God’s word, (2) Make a decision/commitment to do what we know
is right, and (3) Have the courage to carry out the right action.
And, what is the right action? Answer: doing that which is pleasing in the sight of
God.
