What’s a verb? Just a reminder: A

verb is one of the eight parts of speech. A verb is the part of speech that expresses existence, action, or occurrence. Verbs serve the same purpose in English and Spanish.

What’s a verb tense?

The tense of a verb lets us know when the action is occurring. For example, in English, we can say: I studied (past), I study (present) or I will study (future).

What verb tense have we used so far in class?

We’re going to continue to work with present tense verbs in this chapter…

What’s an infinitive?

Dictionary.com defines an infinitive like this: The simple or dictionary form of a verb. Often the word to marks a verb as an infinitive: “to walk,” “to think,” “to fly,” “to exist.”

What three infinitives have we learned to conjugate in Spanish so far?

ser, gustar, tener

Recognizing Infinitives

How do we recognize an infinitive verb in Spanish?

Infinitive verbs end in: •-ar •-er •-ir

If a word ends in –ar, -er, or -ir, chances are pretty good that it’s a verb! (There are a few exceptions.) Roughly 85% of all verbs are –ar verbs, about 10% of verbs are –er verbs, and about 5% of all verbs are –ir verbs. Which means, once you learn how to conjugate –ar verbs, you know how to conjugate approximately 85% of all verbs!

Why conjugate?

We have to do a little tweaking to the infinitive form when we use it in a sentence for it to make sense. This is called conjugation. For example, in English, we don’t say “I to study.” We drop the word “to,” right? We have to do the same thing in Spanish. So, we have to get rid of that “to” part of the verb.

Up until this point, we have just memorized how to conjugate each new verb that we learn.

Today however, we will learn the rules of conjugation so that

we can conjugate new verbs based on patterns.

Las Reglas

The rules you will learn today apply only to verbs that end in –ar. Can you think of any –ar verbs? Hint: Our chapter is full of them…

Las Reglas (continuada)

Rule #1: Drop the –ar, -er, -ir ending of the verb

hablar So you’re now left with the root, or el raíz. For our example, the root would be habl-.

Las Reglas (continuada)

Rule #2: Determine the subject of the sentence and pick the appropriate ending.

Regular –AR Verbs

Yo Nosotros/as

Él Ella Usted

Ellos Ellas Ustedes

Las Reglas (continuada)

Rule #3: “Plug it in, plug it in.”

We would conjugate our example verb hablar like this:

Yo Nosotros/as

Él Ella Usted

Ellos Ellas Ustedes

Exceptions to the Rule…

The rules you learned today apply to regular verbs only. Like English, Spanish has some verbs that don’t follow the rules. However, unlike English, there aren’t very many. You will learn more about irregular verbs in a separate lesson.
