San Francisco 49ers vs. Los Angeles Rams

Sunday, October 21, 2018 Kittle: Taste The Touchdown

• TE George Kittle hauled in 5 recepts. for 98 yds. and 1 TD. His 10-yd. TD recept. from QB C.J. Beathard was the 2nd TD recept. of the season for Kittle and the 4th of his career.

• This marked Kittle’s 3rd game this season with 90-or-more rec. yds. [90 at Min. (9/9) & 125 at LAC (9/30)]. He is one of the three TEs in the NFL with 3 games of 90 rec. yds.-or-more (Phi. TE Zach Ertz – 4; KC TE Travis Kelce – 3).

• Kittle is the first 49ers TE to register 90-or-more rec. yds. in three games during a single-season since TE Vernon Davis in 2010 [104 vs. Phi. (10/10/10); 126 at GB (12/5/10); 96 vs. Arz. (1/2/11)].

Raheem The Dream

• RB Raheem Mostert registered a career-high 4 recepts. for 19 yds. while adding 7 carries for 59 yds. (8.4 avg.).

Big Day For AA

• DL Arik Armstead notched a career-high five solo tackles and brought down Jared Goff for an 9-yd. loss., marking his 2nd sack of the season.

Head Coach Kyle Shanahan

Press Conference – October 21, 2018 San Francisco 49ers vs. Los Angeles Rams

Opening comments “Injuries that I’ve got right now: [DB Adrian] Colbert left with an ankle sprain. [LB Reuben] Foster, shoulder sprain. [S Jaquiski] Tart had a stinger, would have come back in but it was over by then. And, [RB Matt] Breida rolled his ankle.” We’ve talked about the turnovers for several weeks now, is it just becoming something where you guys are pressing or why is this continuing to happen? “Something I’ve got to find out. It’s inexcusable. It’s impossible to win in this league when you turn the ball over like we are and you when don’t get any. So, having four today - four to zero, I think it’s 24 points off turnovers and I think they got nine points off the blocked punt with the safety and (the punt return to the 49ers 13-yard line which they converted into a touchdown). In order for us to be able to play in a football game, we have to protect the ball and get the ball.” QB C.J. Beathard has committed eight of those turnovers in the past three weeks. Are you still okay with him or have you considered starting somebody else at quarterback? “It’s not just C.J., it’s everyone. The quarterback - when the ball leaves his hands - he’s going to get credit for that turnover, but by no means is it 100% on C.J. Of course, he’s got to do better. I’ve got to do better and we’ve got to do a lot better around him.” Following up on that, what is stopping you from seeing what QB Nick Mullens has? “Because C.J. is the best quarterback we have in our building.” Why were you guys able to handle the pressure so much better, it seemed, on Monday Night as opposed to today? “You mean pressure as in them (pass) rushing?” Yes. “We were in a much better rhythm on Monday night. We had the run and the pass game going. We were moving the chains. Early in this, as soon as we started getting something going early, we had a false start, I think, on our first drive that sent us into second and 11. We had a tipped pass, ended up being a fumble the next play. We had a fumbled snap. We never got in a rhythm today. I feel like we did on the last drive of the second quarter, besides that, players, coaches, all of us, we struggled and never found our rhythm.” How much do you attribute to DT Aaron Donald just being a really good football player? “He’s always an issue when he’s on the field for everybody. Everyone knows how good of a player he is, but it was a lot more than just that.”

Page 5: los angeles rams vs san francisco 49ers · 2019-01-15 · San Francisco 49ers vs. Los Angeles Rams Sunday, October 21, 2018 Kittle: Taste The Touchdown • TE George Kittle hauled

The wide receivers didn’t seem very involved at all today. From your vantage point on the sidelines, was that them not getting separation or C.J. just not seeing them when they did get open? “No, it wasn’t that case. They didn’t play much man coverage today, especially the way it went in the first half. They were real soft in their coverages and zones, and tried to take away the big play and make us work our way the field and we obviously struggled to do that.” Generally, you’ve been competitive this year. This wasn’t the case. Is a loss like this somewhat embarrassing? “It’s always embarrassing when you lose like that. We’ve got pride and we’re also confident in what we do. We’re not proud of our record right now. We’re definitely not proud of today. When we played better, we still feel the same way. We’re not into any moral victories here. We’re as far away from one as we could have today. We have to fix the turnovers. Once we fix the turnovers, then we have a chance to start playing football.” How do you fix the turnovers? What’s your approach going to be to fix this? “If it was just one thing, you could say one thing. If it was just one guy, you’d say one guy. But, it’s an accumulation of a number of things. We had one ball stripped. I thought Donald made a pretty good play on that. I know we had the fumble on the first drive. We threw one over the middle that I thought we hesitated on. The DB ran through the ball and got it. There’s a bunch of different situations for the turnovers. We need to get better. The better you get, the less you turn it over. The more you can be balanced, the less you have to pass, but also we’re fumbling it too. So, we need to protect it. We talk about the ball and work on going after the ball as much as you possibly can. You don’t stop. You don’t ignore it. You keep preaching those same things. You keep drilling those same things and you expect it to get better the more you work at it. If it doesn’t, you’ve got to find people who do take care of it.” It was a short week after a pretty emotionally crushing loss. Do you think any of that, at least emotionally, carried over into this game? “I don’t know. Those are definitely the things people will say when something like that happens. I don’t think emotions had to do with our turnovers. When you turn the ball over like that, you can expect those results.” If you sense they were flat at all, intensity or--? “Just watching on the sidelines, I loved the energy our defense came out with. I thought they came out and started the game very well. I thought we were moving the ball pretty well on our first drive. I thought we had a little bit of a set back with that false start that we had, and then the next play we fumbled. I didn’t think we came out flat. I didn’t feel like we were flat, but it’s hard to defend much when you have the results like that.” You said Breida rolled that ankle again. This is, what, the third week in a row he’s been nursing his ankle? At what point, do you tell him and have him sit out for a week to get that right? Because it seems like he’s been advocating for himself to play. “That’s something we’ll have to look into hard. It’s based off how he looks in practice. Breida’s done a very good job recovering throughout the week. He’s had very good practices making all the cuts and everything on Fridays and Saturdays. Obviously, that first play today, it went. When that happens on the first play, we want to see the film and see what happened. He was begging to come back in the game the second half and felt like he was good enough too, but getting at what you’re talking about, that’s why we made that decision to keep him down. Hopefully he’ll heal up more this week. We’ll have to reassess it again.”

Page 6: los angeles rams vs san francisco 49ers · 2019-01-15 · San Francisco 49ers vs. Los Angeles Rams Sunday, October 21, 2018 Kittle: Taste The Touchdown • TE George Kittle hauled

Along those lines, it seems like RB Raheem Mostert continues to bring a spark when he’s in the game. Is he earning himself more and more carries? “Yes. He earned it in practice last week and had a good game versus Green Bay. He wasn’t perfect by any means today, but he had a few good plays and he’s running hard for us. The better he does, the more opportunities he’ll get.” Did CB Richard Sherman suffer his injury on Thursday? “Yes, it was Thursday.” Do you have any idea on the prognosis? “No, I don’t. I just know it was hurting him Thursday, so we had to take him out and he didn’t go on Friday. We tried to look into it Saturday and it was still bothering him, so we had to shut him down. We’ll see tomorrow how he feels.”

49ers QB C.J. Beathard Postgame Quotes – October 21, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. Los Angeles Rams Is there anything that you can kind of put your finger on why things weren’t clicking out there today? “The only thing I can really think of is turnovers. We can’t turn it over like that. Didn’t help our defense out. I think they got 24 points off turnovers. Any time you do that, you’re playing from an uphill battle at that point.” We’ve been talking about turnovers for several weeks now. Is there anything that can be done or you can work on? “Yeah. You can always work on protecting it better. I think it comes down to a mindset and just not letting it happen – the defensive side getting those turnovers. I think we had a couple of opps and we just got to get turnovers and not turn it over.” What happened when you came to the line and C/G Weston Richburg snapped it? Obviously, there was a miscommunication. “I was trying to audible. It was midway through the cadence, trying to say, ‘Easy, easy, easy,’ audible. We weren’t on the same page there.” With a game like this, do you kind of have to keep your eyes open for Los Angeles Rams DT Aaron Donald because he was the one guy that seemed to make the play. “He’s one of the best, if not the best, interior D-Lineman in the NFL. Definitely got to know where he’s at at all times. He’s a good player.” What were they doing to take your wideouts away? It was a while before you guys were able to get some… “Yeah. They were mixing it up a lot on what they were doing. There’s no rhyme or reason. Just what they were doing. They were mixing it up and they were doing a good job with that.” What would you say the issue was, then? The coverage or were you just not seeing them through your reads? “I think everything. We can get better me seeing guys, the O-Line protecting, the receivers getting open, getting some separation. I think we all need to get better in that aspect.”

Page 7: los angeles rams vs san francisco 49ers · 2019-01-15 · San Francisco 49ers vs. Los Angeles Rams Sunday, October 21, 2018 Kittle: Taste The Touchdown • TE George Kittle hauled

A question about your game, how do you feel about where you are right now? I know you had a strong game in Green Bay. “Yeah, I mean, it’s tough to think about that right now, especially after a loss like that. I guess I’ll have to watch the tape and really see how exactly what happened and whatnot. Never feels good when you’re 1-6 and not winning games. Like I said last week, I’d rather play awful and throw a bunch of picks and win a game than throw for a bunch of yards and touchdowns and lose. So, I think we just need to start winning some games.” Was there a point at all where you felt that you had developed some sort of offensive rhythm today? What was the key behind that? “I would say the drive before half. I felt that it was a good drive. You know, there were a couple other times in the game where we felt like we would get a first down here and then turn it over or kind of stall out. We just got to sustain those drives.” What’s the mood in the locker room after a loss like this? I’m sure guys will obviously want to win, they’re pros. “Yeah, it’s tough. Right now, we’re 1-6 and it’s not where anybody pictured us being at this point. Not where anybody wants to be. But the only thing you can do is get back to work tomorrow and move forward. You’ve got to flush this. As tough as it is and losing like that, you’ve just got to put it behind you. We’ve got nine games left in the regular season. We’ve got an opportunity to really turn the season around and have a good year.”

49ers RB Matt Breida Postgame Quotes – October 21, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. Los Angeles Rams

Was your injury one of those things where they just tape you up and you go right back out there? “Yes. I tried to keep on playing. I have to be smart and not hurt my team at the same time. If I can’t go out there and go 100-percent, I have to let the guys that can do it.” Was it your ankle? “Yes. It was something to do with my ankle. It was a pre-existing injury. I just try to get out there every week and play. I am just trying to get healthy now hopefully.” Do you put more pressure on yourself now that RB Jerick McKinnon is out since the beginning of the season? “I would say that I put more pressure on myself. I just love the game of football. Anytime that I can get out there and help my team to win and I feel like I can help them win, I want to be out there. Even if I am hurt, I am going to want to play.” On the turnover, was that just Los Angeles Rams DT Aaron Donald being Aaron Donald and making a play? “I just have to have better ball security. I have to protect the ball better. I blame no one but myself for that.”

Page 8: los angeles rams vs san francisco 49ers · 2019-01-15 · San Francisco 49ers vs. Los Angeles Rams Sunday, October 21, 2018 Kittle: Taste The Touchdown • TE George Kittle hauled

49ers DL DeForest Buckner Postgame Quotes – October 21, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. Los Angeles Rams The team has had a lot of players go down to injuries. How are you guys going to recuperate from that? “It is part the game, guys getting injured. We lost a lot of guys early on in the season. Honestly, it is next man up. We can’t use that as an excuse. Everyone in the NFL is getting hurt. The next guy just has to step in and do the job.” You guys were not able to get Los Angeles Rams QB Jared Goff a whole bunch, but you hurried him a few times, you sacked him, and you were able to stop the run. Is that a positive for you guys? “Yes, but at the end of the day we lost. It doesn’t matter how well the defense played, we still lost. We lost the turnover battle in another game. We have to do a better job to find more opportunities for our offense and take the ball away.” Do sometimes guys try too hard to make a play? “No, I feel like guys for the most part are doing their jobs a lot better today. We’ve just go to get better field position. We’ve got to do a better job bowing up as a defense and not letting them in. Guys just got to do their jobs and make the plays that come their way.”

49ers DB Adrian Colbert Postgame Quotes – October 21, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. Los Angeles Rams With as much talent that is in this locker room are you shocked to be a 1-6 team? “It is about the process. It is about trusting the process and getting the product at the end. Right now it is tough. We are going to keep working and keep fighting. No matter how many people go down, we are going to keep fighting and believing in each other.” How do you emotionally come back from this? “Next week. It is a game after game process. You can’t go ahead and get better by thinking about what is going to happen in a couple weeks. It is a one game process. That is how we have to take it, one day at a time, and one game at a time.”

49ers TE George Kittle Postgame Quotes – October 21, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. Los Angeles Rams Actual wide receivers in this offense combined for 35 yards. What did you see out there from the wide receivers? Are they not getting separation? Was it a schematic thing? What did you see? “I was running routes, so I wasn’t paying attention to those guys. I expect everybody to get open on every single play. That’s just me and I’m optimistic, so I don’t really see much.” What has to happen for you guys to cut down on the turnovers? “Hold on to the ball. That’s about it. That’s on all of us. That’s a mindset by a team. If you don’t get the ball on defense and you turn it over on offense, you can’t do anything. Minus four is rough and you can’t expect to beat one of the best offenses in the league giving them the ball at the 50-yard line.”

Page 9: los angeles rams vs san francisco 49ers · 2019-01-15 · San Francisco 49ers vs. Los Angeles Rams Sunday, October 21, 2018 Kittle: Taste The Touchdown • TE George Kittle hauled

Late in the first half where you guys were struggling and you started getting involved in the passing game, that one play where you were running down the sideline, it looked like almost you were trying to send a message that you guys weren’t going to give up. Take us through that play. What was your mindset? Were you angry at that point? What were you feeling? “It’s football. You’ve got to play angry. If you don’t play angry then you’re not playing. It’s easy when you’re angry and you’re having fun. If a guy is going to not throw his body at me and he looks like he’s just going to sit there with his chest open, I’m going to put my helmet through his chest. That’s his fault if he’s sore in the morning.”

49ers T Mike McGlinchey Postgame Quotes – October 21, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. Los Angeles Rams This was your first time going up against Los Angeles Rams DT Aaron Donald. How much can he wreck a game plan? “He is one of those rare breed types of a player. I didn’t get to see him too much today because he plays primarily on the inside but he is a phenomenal player. He puts it on tape each and every week and he is a force. That is all that you can really say about him.” A lot of these games you guys can point to something and say. That there is something to build on; what do you say after a day like today? “You just have to be better. As cliché as that sounds, you have to be better from top to bottom. We can’t start the way we started today. We had too many turnovers and too many missed opportunities early and we can’t give an offense like that, that many chances. That is what happened. We just have to clean up the small things. It’s not a huge overhaul of things that need to be corrected. It’s just little things here and there.”

49ers RB Raheem Mostert Postgame Quotes – October 21, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. Los Angeles Rams

The game plan seemed to unfold pretty well. Can you put your finger on what stopped you other than the turnovers? “Ourselves. That’s really what it was. Outside of turnovers, we were playing well, but those turnovers are key. We just have to minimize them the best that we can and go out there and keep fighting no matter what.” At this level against a team like that, turnovers make for an uphill battle. “It does. They’re a good team. Kudos to them and what they do because when it’s a good team like that you cannot turn the ball over. Unfortunately, we had four of them on our own and then we didn’t get any, so it’s an uphill battle.” Once again the injury bug hit the team. Is it one of those things where it’s two steps forward and one step back? “It’s one of those things where we just have to keep fighting. We have the right guys in here. When a guy gets hurt, we have to have another guy come in and fill that role, no matter what position it is. We all have to step up like we’ve been doing, but those turnovers are just costly. We can’t have those. We have to eliminate them. On the same page, we have to get turnovers.”

Page 10: los angeles rams vs san francisco 49ers · 2019-01-15 · San Francisco 49ers vs. Los Angeles Rams Sunday, October 21, 2018 Kittle: Taste The Touchdown • TE George Kittle hauled

49ers C Weston Richburg Postgame Quotes – October 21, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. Los Angeles Rams

It looked like Los Angeles Rams DT Aaron Donald had a really good game today. How tough is it to stop him when he is on like that? “Well he is a good player. We have to be prepared to play against players like that. We didn’t come prepared and we have to do a better job, obviously next time.” What happened on that pop-up snap? “It was just a miscommunication. We were off on a couple of things. We have to be better prepared next time.” One of those things where you can replicate in practice but when you are facing the real thing, it is just ramped up even more? “Yes and we have to be better prepared for that and today we weren’t and we have to do a better job.” With all of the turnovers, how do you address that? “We just have to do a better job in practice. We have to practice it, be intentional about it and make sure we hold on to the ball.”

49ers T Joe Staley Postgame Quotes – October 21, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. Los Angeles Rams

Is there anything from this game that you can take? “It was a bad effort. We control what we do up front. What our job is as offensive linemen was a poor job today. No excuses there. We just didn’t get it done and didn’t give [San Francisco 49ers QB] C.J. Beathard time. He was under a lot of duress the whole game. We have to do a better job of opening up the run game. Holding onto the ball has unfortunately become a theme the last couple of weeks so we have a lot to work on.” When you look at C.J.’s line, what do you put that on? “We put that on us. As offensive linemen, our job is to protect the quarterback. You always strive for a clean game, and obviously today was not a clean game at all. A lot of credit to them, but we have a lot of faith in our abilities as well, and that’s not the standard we’re trying to have here.” Was there any carry over on having a tough loss Monday night and having to play that team on a short week? “No. That doesn’t have any bearing on it. Each week is a new week. We’re professionals and we know how to handle that stuff. We’ve been doing this for a while now. You play short weeks in college and short weeks in the NFL. No excuse there.” How impactful was Los Angeles Rams DT Aaron Donald across the board? “I don’t think there’s anybody that’s been like him in the NFL. He’s in a class of his own. At the end of the day, he’s still an NFL player and our job is to block him. He was really impactful today. We’ll go back and watch film to see what we can do better the next time we play him.”

Los Angeles Rams Head Coach Sean McVay Postgame Quotes – October 21, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. Los Angeles Rams Opening comments: “We did a great job applying pressure on [49ers QB C.J.] Beathard all day. I thought we did a good job stopping the run. To be able to get seven sacks and four turnovers and for those four turnovers to lead to 24 points, that’s truly complementary football. I thought having [Los Angeles Rams K] Greg Zuerlein back was a big boost. [Los Angeles Rams WR] JoJo [Natson] had some good returns. So, a lot of good things against a tough opponent. I don’t care what their record says. You watch the film, they’re a very well coached team in all three phases. I have a whole lot of respect for coach [49ers head coach Kyle] Shanahan and what those guys do week in and week out. It was a great team win for us today.” Los Angeles Rams DT Aaron Donald had a pretty dominant performance out there. When you were watching him, what were you seeing? “Same thing as you. You feel him and he did a great job affecting and influencing the game in a variety of ways. He was great against the run, did a good job of being able to get to Beathard on a handful of occasions. But, our defense overall, Aaron was a big part of that. I thought [Los Angeles Rams CB] Troy Hill had a great interception, returned it bouncing back the right way. He temporarily left, just getting checked for a concussion, but he was fine. [Los Angeles Rams S] John Johnson [III], another unbelievable interception. I just thought the defense’s overall energy, the sense of urgency that they had today was really special. They had a great week of preparation. They knew what a great challenge it was going to be going into this game. They certainly were ready to go. Credit to [Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator] Wade [Phillips] and our defensive coaching staff getting those guys ready and then the defensive players delivering.” I know you’re focused on the offense most of the time, but for your defense to put a really complete game together in the run and in the pass, what was that like for you to see? “It was big time because really offensively, we started out slowly. I thought the short fields were really instrumental in allowing us to get to a lead early on. Once we kind of settled in, you could see [Los Angeles Rams QB] Jared [Goff] got into a rhythm. We were able to mix it up and have a little bit of a balance with the run and the pass. But, the defense’s ability to control that game early on I thought was instrumental in being able to get a lead. They were great from start to finish and you really can’t say enough about what they did today.” Los Angeles Rams LB Cory Littleton, he’s on defense and on special teams, blocks another punt. How has he been able to continue to develop? “Cory is a baller. He’s a guy that has done an excellent job. Everybody has noticed what an impact he’s made the last few years in special teams. He’s still doing that and then he’s playing every single snap of defense. He’s doing a great job with the communication plan at that MIKE linebacker spot. You see the versatility that he has, being able to be efficient in coverage, being able to blitz. What a great job he does pursuing the run. He’s playing really at a high-level right now and I couldn’t be more pleased with what Cory’s done and we’re really fortunate to have him.” Going back to Aaron, the first couple of games when he didn’t have those splash plays we asked you and asked him about it. Did you feel like it was inevitable that those numbers would come up? “You know, I think Aaron is a type of guy, he’s just going to continue to work. You guys hear what he says all of the time, ‘Hard work pays off.’ Really, Aaron has enough of an understanding of when those opportunities are there, you take them and you make sure you capitalize on them. In certain games, there’s certain ways that people want to protect against Aaron. That does, sometimes, alter the

opportunities, those play opportunities that he gets. He just continues to grind. We’re trying to find ways to accentuate his skill set and really all 11 of our defensive players that are on the field. But, certainly Aaron is a guy that when you care as much as he does, when you get into that rhythm and that flow, he’s a guy that’s going to get better just because of the way he approaches it every single season. If that’s the case, that’s good things for us.” The guys in there were talking about how we see what they do on Sundays, but this is really more of a Monday through Saturday type of situation. Can you just talk about that buy in, that they’ve bought in to the culture that you’ve created? “I think it’s really, it’s them. It’s their ownership on what we’re trying to get done. It’s the consistency at which we want to operate. It’s going to be the same. We’ll come in tomorrow, we’ll look at the film, we’ll make sure we give the credit where the credit is due, but we’ll also look at ourselves critically, where can we improve. There’s always going to be things you can learn every single game, every single opportunity whether you win or lose. But, you can’t say enough about the veteran leadership that we have and how that’s influencing and effecting the younger guys and how everybody just takes on that mindset that it’s one day at a time, be where our feet are planted, let’s find a way to get better. We have a great opportunity to go against a really tough team in the Green Bay Packers coming off of a bye, being back at home. Every single week, you write a new story and we have to be consistent with our approach. That’s what our guys have done an excellent job with. I think we’re seeing that approach during the week pay off with the way that they’re playing and the performances on Sundays.” It looked like the red zone during the first half wasn’t really going as well as you had hoped. What could have gone better? “I think early on they did a nice job with some different things. I thought coach [49ers defensive coordinator Robert] Saleh did a nice job mixing it up and then really once we settled in, I thought they did a good job. I’m not sure really what they ended up finishing with, but it seemed like we got a handful of touchdowns towards the end. We started off slow. Again, those are things that, I think it starts with me. I really do mean that. They played a couple of defensive structures. We had a couple of things, whether it was the run or the pass, that I can do a better job of. Those are things I’ll look at. I think the biggest thing that says anything about our players is their ability to settle in. The defense’s control early allowed us to do that great, being able to hit some field goals and then I thought you saw us finish. That last touchdown pass that Jared made to [Los Angeles Rams RB] Todd [Gurley II] was incredible by those guys. You talk about players making plays, that was an example of those guys doing a great job there.” I’m not sure how the numbers finally ended up, but in the third quarter, you guys were 20 something run, 18 pass. Is that predetermined or how it’s looking on the field to you guys? “Not really. It’s something that, our job is to move the football and score points. I think there is a level of, ‘Alright, what’s the feel and the flow of the game?’ If you’re operating with a lead, we slow down the tempo a little bit and you can see we were in that four-minute mode the majority of the last quarter trying to burn some clock. I think really, it’s about what we feel like based on the defensive structures that they’re presenting, what’s going to be the best way to move the football. You do want to have to try to have a level of balance, especially with how we operate. But, if they’re going to fully commit to one or the other, then we’re going to have to be able to counter that and give our players good options and give them a chance to execute against whatever look the defense wants to present. I think you could see that our players did a good job in both to be able to keep them a little bit off balance, really in that second and third quarter.” What’s it like to be 7-0? “It feels good. It feels good to be able to get another win and really our approach will be consistent. It feels great. I can’t say enough about what the players have done. But again, it’s seven games through.

Page 13: los angeles rams vs san francisco 49ers · 2019-01-15 · San Francisco 49ers vs. Los Angeles Rams Sunday, October 21, 2018 Kittle: Taste The Touchdown • TE George Kittle hauled

We have a lot of football left and we have to do a great job of getting ready for a Green Bay Packers team that’s coming off of some rest. We know what kind of guy they have leading the way and a lot of respect for coach [Green Bay Packers head coach Mike] McCarthy. It’s going to be a great challenge for us.”

Los Angeles Rams QB Jared Goff Press Conference – October 21, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. Los Angeles Rams What are your thoughts on being 7-0? “It feels good. It feels really good. Another tough road game. We want to get back at home and play in the Coliseum. We’ve played three in a row on the road. Ready to get home and stop traveling around. This stretch of three games that we’ve won on the road now have proved vital. I think they’re games we’re going to look back on and be like, ‘oh, that was a tough stretch and came away with some wins. When you get four takeaways from the defense, just how big of a lift does that give the offense? “Huge, huge. They were incredible today. One of the best defensive performances I’ve been around. It seemed like every time we sat down, we went back up and went back on the field. They were incredible. [Los Angeles Ram DT] Aaron [Donald] was Aaron today. Everyone was really, really good. The secondary was really good. The linebackers were really good. It was just a lot of fun to watch from the sidelines.” Are you okay on your left side? It looked like someone fell on you. “I’m good, I’m just a little sore. I’m good. Regular, through the year, banged-up stuff, but no, I’m fine.” This team played well today, 39 points, plus all the turnovers on defense. As you hit what will now be Week 8, as kind of the mid-point, do you feel like you guys are really going on all cylinders? “You know, to be honest, no. I think we’re playing well in certain games. Today we were on defense. Today we were on all cylinders on defense. I think offensively, there are a lot of things we can do better, which is good. Good to score 39 points and have your defense play like that and say that after a game like that. A lot of things that we can clean up and do better, and that we’ll always try to work on throughout the week, and I think that’s kind of the best way to approach it. So many plays out there that I can even think of right now that we kind of just left on the field and could’ve had a little more.” You’re 12-1 on the road under Los Angeles Rams Coach Sean McVay. What do you attribute that too? Is that him? “Yeah, I think we just come together on the road. It’s been kind of a theme of ours the last two years is us against the world type of mentality and on the road we’ve been really good. You said 12-1 since he’s been here, and again all of the work you do, which is good. I think we’ve grinded some one the road. Last week we won on the ground. The week before we had to do some different things with some of the stuff they presented. Today was a little bit of everything. Whenever you can find different ways to win, it’s always a good problem.” When you see what DT Aaron Donald does to other quarterbacks, do you ever think of what it would be like to face him? “Yeah, I have. It’s not great in practice. He’s a great player. He’s a once in a generation type player. We’re lucky to have him on our team. Hopefully never play against him. He’s a great player, a great teammate, great guy, does everything right. Like I said, lucky to have him on our side.”

Page 14: los angeles rams vs san francisco 49ers · 2019-01-15 · San Francisco 49ers vs. Los Angeles Rams Sunday, October 21, 2018 Kittle: Taste The Touchdown • TE George Kittle hauled

Being 7-0, you have a really big challenge next week with Green Bay. How much could that be the game that could maybe define your season? “You know, I hope there’s not one game that does define our season the whole year. Next week’s no different than this week. We had a tough game today against San Francisco and next week we’ll have another tough one against Green Bay at home. They’re a good team, coming off squeaking one out against these guys [the 49ers] on Monday Night Football. They’re a good team and anytime there’s a guy like Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers on the other side of the field it’s always tough. Being the player he is, it’ll be a fun one. Los Angeles Rams WR Cooper Kupp wasn’t out there today but Los Angeles Rams WR Robert Woods was able to play different positions. What has Robert meant to you in this offense? “He’s been unbelievable. I think it goes unnoticed sometimes with all the stuff he’s able to do and how much I rely on him and how much all the receivers rely on him. His versatility, how smart he is, his ability to block, his unselfishness, all that. The type of teammate he is, the type of player he is, I’m very thankful to have him on our side. I appreciate everything he does. It’s really incredible.” The 12-yard touchdown to Los Angeles Rams RB Todd Gurley, how do you execute that? That seemed like a very difficult thing. “Yeah, didn’t play out quite the way we wanted it to. That’s just me and him trying to make a play. He’s a great player, try to get him the ball and he made it work.” The guys in the locker room talk about how what we see on Sunday is more about what you guys do Monday through Saturday. Is that self-governed in that locker room or does it come from Coach Sean McVay or where does that accountability come from? “I think it starts at the top with Sean for sure. I think it’s really started to trickle down to the team. The accountability, the standard we have throughout the week. I don’t want to stand up here and be like, ‘Oh, we have a higher standard than everybody,’ but we hold ourselves to a high standard on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and really, truly every rep at practice. Really try to get the most out of it and don’t take anything for granted. I think with that mentality, being able to win games and never really getting satisfied, is the best way to approach it.” In the first quarter there were a couple trips to the red zone where you guys really relied on Los Angeles Rams K Greg Zuerlein to come in. What was Greg like for you and what’s going on in some of those trips to the red zone where maybe you guys aren’t executing? “Yeah, Greg’s been awesome. I think getting Greg back was huge. It kind of takes a little of the uncertainty out of it when you get inside of a certain number for him. He’s so good. I don’t know, it’s just stuff to continue to work on. We’re not the only team that has some issues down there. We want to finish drives in the end zone of course, but we scored 39 points. We’ll continue to look at it and work at it. I know Sean’s going to be hard on himself. I’m going to be hard on myself. I want to be better down there. Continue to finish with touchdowns.” Los Angeles Rams WR JoJo Natson, what did he do for you guys today on offense? Los Angeles Rams WR Nick Williams just came in and caught a big third down pass. “Yeah, he had a couple good catches. JoJo’s been great. JoJo’s electric back there. So shifty, so quick and another guy who’s completely unselfish. Guy that’s been around, knows how it works and is a great teammate and has done a great job in that role. Nick, it’s impressive him stepping in. By Thursday, he knew most of the stuff he was supposed to do. I’d try to help him out and he’d be like, ‘Oh, I’ve got it.’ He’s been in this offense before and has a good feel for it. Today he had a couple big catches and the third down was really big to extend that drive.”

Rams LB Mark Barron Postgame Quotes – October 21, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. Los Angeles Rams

The last couple of weeks it looks like you guys have been able to find the run game. What was the key to that? “Just trusting each other. We had guys running around trying to do too much. We had people trying to make plays and stuff, play additional football, people jumping out of their gaps. We’re not doing that right now. We’re trusting each other, playing disciplined and sound football. That’s all it takes.” When you’re able to add turnovers to that trust, what does that do for your group? You see the offense scoring points off of that. “You see what that does. We’re able to get the offense back on the field and they’re able to put up points. Putting those turnovers into the equation and playing disciplined football, it’s a recipe for success. More than likely you’re going to win. You probably have an 80 percent, 90 percent chance of winning, but you have to force those turnovers to get a 100 percent chance of a win.” How much do the turnovers fire you guys up? “You’ve seen it. It’s something we take pride in. That’s what makes great defenses. We most definitely take pride in causing those turnovers.”

Rams WR Brandin Cooks Postgame Quotes – October 21, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. Los Angeles Rams

Can you speak to the ability of all of these weapons on this offense always being able to step up? “It speaks wonders. The practice that we put in, the trust [Los Angeles Rams head] coach [Sean McVay] has in every single one of the guys that’s on this side of the ball is tremendous. When guys go out there and different people make plays, it makes our offense that much better.” Another week, another “W.” What has been the continuous message from coach McVay and even among yourselves? “Take it one week at a time. If you truly believe that and follow that process, you have to understand that this league is a week-by-week process. Your record doesn’t do anything for you in the future. As long as you focus on what you have to do and take it one week at a time, we’ll be fine.” Looking ahead to next week, what’s the key to making sure you get another “W”? “Going back to work, going back to study. We have to focus on what we have to do, don’t think outside the box and play our game.”

Rams DT Aaron Donald

Postgame Quotes – October 21, 2018 San Francisco 49ers vs. Los Angeles Rams

The turnovers came in bunches. How did you make it look kind of easy out there? “Our secondary did a great job. They made them hold the ball a little longer giving us opportunities to get after them. Then it’s getting them to the ground.” What about ripping the ball out of 49ers RB Matt Breida’s arms? How did you do that?

Page 16: los angeles rams vs san francisco 49ers · 2019-01-15 · San Francisco 49ers vs. Los Angeles Rams Sunday, October 21, 2018 Kittle: Taste The Touchdown • TE George Kittle hauled

“I just came off of the two gap. The way I came off I just got my arm in the ball and I felt it. Then I just tugged and got the ball. When you just play football, really play football, good things are going to happen. It feels like you really had a complete game out there today. The run defense, the pass defense you really put the whole thing together. Is that how it felt out there? Yes, but I feel we did a lot of things wrong with our run defense, especially me. I jumped out of my gap a couple of times and that hurt us. We just have to clean up the little things. That’s part of the game. You have to make things happen. You just have to do things a little bit more soundly at times.” With all of these penalties being called for falling on the quarterback, it looks like you’re doing a little get-him-down-and-get away. “I’m just out there playing. I know we aren’t allowed to do too much. I’m just playing the game and trying to get him down and making sure it’s going to be a sack. When the defense gets four takeaways, like it did, can you feel how big of a boost that is to the offense? “With the offense we have to just keep feeding and feeding them ball. If we do that, they are going to put points on the board. Our offense is so explosive. We know that if we give them the ball good things are going to happen.”

Rams CB Troy Hill Postgame Quotes – October 21, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. Los Angeles Rams

You’ve talked about in the past being able to have a short memory and come back. You came back pretty strong. Talk about your performance. “Definitely. That’s one of the things that I pride myself in, always thinking about the next play. If you stay in the past, then that’s when doubt starts happening. I have to thank my teammates and my coaches for having confidence in me. They made it a lot easier, too. I’m just trying to stay consistent.” How would you describe the defense going into next week’s game against the Green Bay Packers? “I think we just have to keep building off of today’s game. It’s one of those things that we’ve been waiting for, and so now we just have to keep on stringing it together. That’s the truest measure, just to keep on going and stay consistent in what we’re doing.” What about you, personally, being able to bounce back and come back with a big game for yourself? “Personally, that’s a big, big weight off of my shoulders. I know what I’m capable of, and I just have to stick to my technique. When I was looking at my film from last week, there were a lot of bad eyes and things like that. Today was more about my technique and letting the game come to me. Like I said, I know what I’m capable of doing. In this league, you’re going to get hit or people are going to catch the ball on you. It’s all about how you respond.” Talk about the defensive line, Los Angeles Rams DT Aaron Donald in particular, playing like that in terms of getting pressure on the quarterback. Are you aware of that when you’re out on the field? “When I see the quarterback going down, I don’t know exactly who it is, but I know it makes my job a whole lot easier. I’m definitely aware of it, but you just don’t know who it is, coming from so far back.

Page 17: los angeles rams vs san francisco 49ers · 2019-01-15 · San Francisco 49ers vs. Los Angeles Rams Sunday, October 21, 2018 Kittle: Taste The Touchdown • TE George Kittle hauled

That makes our job a whole lot easier. Aaron had four sacks. That’s crazy right there. If we can keep doing that, as a secondary that will make our job a lot easier, too.”

Rams S John Johnson III Postgame Quotes – October 21, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. Los Angeles Rams

You are 7-0. Do you feel like you are on a roll? “Looking at our past games yes. We are on a roll. But we know going into the next game, it’s a one game season. We have to take it one game at a time. I don’t think we’ve played our best football yet.” What will it take to get you to play your best football? I don’t know. Just never settling and not getting complacent. So I don’t think we’ll ever play our best football. It’s just one game at a time.”

Rams WR Robert Woods Postgame Quotes – October 21, 2018

San Francisco 49ers vs. Los Angeles Rams

Why is the team playing so well to the start the season? “The biggest thing is we want to win. We want to have success. We want to finish our drives. We’re playing as a team in all phases. Special teams got a big block for a safety. Our defense had four turnovers. [Los Angeles Rams DT] Aaron Donald was all over them. Our offense was finishing their drives.” What has been the key for everyone to work cohesively? “Practice. The biggest thing is how we work and compete as a team. We play as a unit and we practice like it.” How do you keep this going to get another “W” next week? “Enjoy today, get back to work on Monday, stay the course and the next game is the most important one.” What’s been the message in the locker room among the players? “Play our game and be ourselves. We are the best unit when we play together and play like ourselves. We’re here for a reason. We need to show it, don’t play like anyone else and we’ll be good enough.”
