Game 10 | Road Game 6 (2-3) | Day Game 5 (3-1)
TV: SNLA/MLB Network | Radio: AM 570 (Eng.); 1020 AM (Span.)
MAKE IT A WINNER: The Dodgers today close out their
three-game series and six-game road trip (2-3) with an
afternoon matinee at the Friendly Confines. The club is
seeking their second series win of the season and first series
win vs. the Cubs in Chicago since 2014. Los Angeles heads
back to Southern California after the game and tomorrow
begins a six-game stand against the first-place Diamondbacks (4
games) and Rockies (2).
The Dodgers are already 3-1 in day games this year, and
last year, the team was 28-16 (.636) in day games,
compiling the best winning percentage in the Majors.
Dodger outfielder Andrew Toles hit his first-career
leadoff home run yesterday, becoming the third Dodger
(Kiké Hernández and Chase Utley) to do so since the
start of the 2016 season.
Los Angeles is 11-7 at Wrigley Field in the regular
season since the start of 2013. Los Angeles’ .611
winning percentage over that time is second in the NL to
the San Diego Padres (8-5, .613).
OH WHAT A RELIEF: The Dodger bullpen continued its early-
season mastery last night, as three pitchers fired 3.0 scoreless
while allowing just one hit and striking out six. In preserving the
Dodgers’ first shutout victory of the season, the bullpen lowered
it’s ERA to 1.48 (5 ER/30.1 IP), which ranks second in the NL,
just behind the Reds’ relievers (1.23). The Dodger bullpen, which
ranked second in the Majors in ERA (3.35), opponents’ batting
average (.221) and WHIP (1.16) in 2016, looks to once again be a
team strength and also leads the NL with a 0.82 combined WHIP
and a 7.20 strikeout-to-walk ratio, striking out 36 (4th NL) against
just five walks. The bullpen has limited opponents to a .180
batting average (20-for-111), which ranks third in the NL.
The Dodgers pitching staff overall has posted a National
League-best 1.03 WHIP, while ranking among the top
teams in the NL with a 2.63 ERA (23 ER/78.2 IP, 3rd) and
a .211 opponents’ batting average (3rd), while striking out
81 through nine games.
MAN OF THE IVY: Yasiel Puig has been successful in his 14
regular-season games at Wrigley Field with a .383/.473/.617
slashline, going 18-for-47 with 13 runs, three doubles, a triple,
two homers, six RBI and seven multi-hit games on the North Side
of Chicago. Overall, Puig has also been successful against the
Cubbies, ranking second among active players (min. 50 PA) in
career batting average (.409), first in on-base percentage (.480)
and fourth in slugging percentage (.636):
Active Batting Avg. Leaders vs. Cubs (min. 50 PA)
1. Ian Kinsler .417
2. Yasiel Puig .409 (27-for-66) 3. Christian Yelich .360
A BUSY DAY IN HISTORY: Today marks the eight-year
anniversary of Orlando Hudson’s cycle, in which he became just
the second Dodger to accomplish the feat and the first at Dodger
Stadium. “O-Dawg” achieved the cycle against the Giants during
the Dodgers’ 2009 home opener.
Today is also the five-year anniversary of Aaron
Harang’s nine consecutive strikeouts to start the game
against the Padres as well as the 63rd anniversary of Hall
of Famer Walter Alston’s debut in 1954.
WE DEFINITELY MISSED RYU: Left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu
will make his second start of the 2017 season this afternoon,
following his first outing last Friday in Denver (4.2 IP, 2 ER).
Before his last start, Ryu had appeared in just one game over the
last two seasons – July 7, 2016 vs. San Diego (6 ER/4.2 IP) – due
to left shoulder surgery (2015) and left elbow tendinitis (2016).
Ryu is hoping to return to the form he showed during his first two
MLB campaigns in 2013-14, when he combined to go 28-15 with
a 3.17 ERA in 56 starts. Ryu’s 28 wins rank fourth by a Los
Angeles starter (since 1958) through the first 58 starts of their
MLB career, behind just Fernando Valenzuela (31, 1981-82),
Orel Hershiser (29, 1984-86) and Ramon Martinez (29, 1988-
91) – Source: Stats, LLC.
A victory today would be Ryu’s first since Aug. 31,
2014. He has only made one career appearance at
Wrigley Field – a 6-2 victory on Aug. 2, 2013 in which
he allowed two runs in 5.1 innings.
A SPECIAL DAY: Tickets are still available for Saturday’s 6:10
p.m. game against the Diamondbacks, where the Dodgers will
unveil and dedicate the brand new Jackie Robinson statue. The
statue will be housed outside the left field reserve level and a
ceremony will take place in the afternoon featuring the Robinson
family, Dodger owner Earvin “Magic” Johnson, Dodger
President and CEO Stan Kasten and Hall of Famer Frank
Robinson. The ceremony will be emceed by Kevin Frazier and is
expected to also be attended by Sandy Koufax, Vin Scully, Don
Newcombe and Jaime Jarrin. The entire ceremony will be
broadcasted live on SportsNet LA, AM 570 LA Sports and
Dodgers.com.
The first 40,000 fans at the game on Saturday receive a
mini replica of the statue, presented by Bank of America.
In addition to the statue unveiling, today Major League
Baseball announced its’ schedule of activities and events
surrounding the 70th anniversary of Jackie Robinson
breaking baseball’s color barrier. All home clubs will
feature Jackie Robinson Day jeweled bases and lineup
cards. Additionally, MLB Clubs will host more than 50
Jackie Robinson Foundation (JRF) scholars and alumni
for ceremonies across the league. One number ‘42’
jersey will be signed by each member of every Club and
auctioned off on MLB.com (MLB.com/42jersey), with
proceeds benefitting the Jackie Robinson Foundation.
This year marks the launch of the inaugural “Trailblazer
Series,” a first-of-its-kind girl’s baseball tournament
hosted in conjunction with Jackie Robinson Day.
Approximately 100 girls, ages 16 and under, will
participate in the three-day tournament held in the
greater L.A.-area, beginning today and going through
Saturday. The girls will be coached by some of the
nation’s top female baseball coaches and players and
additional activities for the Trailblazer Series
participants include appearances by special guests
connected to baseball and attending the Jackie Robinson
Day celebration at Dodger Stadium.
