The Faith Community Advisory Council’s book groups, “Candid Conversations on Race”, are going virtual with the book, “White Fragility: Why It’s So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism”, by Robin DiAngelo. These book discussion groups are being offered for people wanting to delve deeper into their own experiences of racism and to listen to the experiences of others in order to promote racial equity and social justice, here and everywhere. The conversations will be led by co-facilitators who led the book discussion groups “Candid Conversations on Race”, held last fall & winter. The co-facilitators are white and African American. People of color are encouraged to participate. These virtual discussion groups will meet at least four times, be limited to 10 people, and held on July 12 & 26 and August 9 & 23 between 7:00 to 8:30 pm, and on your own home computer using Zoom! Participants must purchase their own copy of the book. First come, first serve! You must register by July 10. Those who register will receive the Zoom link by email, the Ground rules for the Zoom dialogue and asked to answer a few brief questions. e.g. "Have you read other books on racism or been a participant in a discussion group on racism before?" It is our responsibility to be dealing with our inner voices of racial prejudice and the systemic racism of our culture. Candid conversations related to “White Fragility” will be done safely, leading us to understand why being non-racist isn’t good enough, and preparing us for effective anti-racist action.

Face Coverings Required as Phase 2 Reopening Continues, With New Directive Requiring Them Outdoors in Some Instances

As Montgomery County continues Phase 2 reopening, health officials remind all residents that face coverings must be worn to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. In a health officer directive issued on June 18 by County Health Officer Travis Gayles, residents (except those under the age of two and those with health conditions that make breathing difficult) must wear face coverings whenever they are in public and physical distancing is not possible. Wearing face coverings outdoors is currently required:

On public transportation such as Ride On, Metro and ride sharing

Entering businesses and services that are open, including: Grocery stores Restaurants Retail businesses Religious services Hair salons and barbershops Pools, except when in the water Gyms and fitness centers, including when exercising

Exercising or interacting with others outdoors

Outdoor markets, including farmer’s markets

Child care centers Businesses allowed to reopen during Phase 2 are required to have employees wear face coverings at all times, including during food preparation and when interacting with customers.
