Happy Endingsby Pastor Karen Geisendorfer-Lindgren

I like happy endings. If I go to a movie, a happy ending is one of the criteria that impacts whether I have a shot at liking it. The same goes for books and plays and television shows. My penchant for

happy endings is one reason why I am such a huge fan of the TV show, Perry Mason. I really love the oldest shows from the late 50s and early 60s. In fact, the older, the better. I like the fact that defense attorney Perry’s clients always have all sorts of circumstantial evidence against them, but then Perry cleverly gets the person who is really guilty to admit what they have done and Perry’s client is proven innocent. And

then in the last two minutes of the show, Perry tells his secretary Della Street and private investigator Paul Drake how he figured out the case and then they all go out for a steak dinner. There is always drama and excitement—but at the same time I can relax and not get too worried, because I can pretty much count on a happy ending.

I like happy endings in fiction, because it seems that in real life there is no guarantee of a happy ending—at least not on the surface. Sometimes a couple gets married and the marriage ends in divorce. Sometimes a person has a medical test and they get really frightening results. Sometimes sickness leads to death. Sometimes life gives us anything but a happy ending. And that is why it is so important to remember that this life is not all there is. As we experience Lent and prepare for Holy Week, we are reminded that Jesus is victorious over death itself. For those of us who know Christ as Lord we can be confident that Jesus has the final word…and that word is love and forgiveness and an eternity spent in the presence of God. As we celebrate The Resurrection on the last day of March, we can be certain that one day each of us will truly experience the ultimate happy ending. Happy Easter!

Spiritual Mentoring—A Discipleship Ministry

How Spiritual Mentoring Opened My Eyes!by Becky Clement

I began my journey with Spiritual Mentoring Ministry being nervous and somewhat intimidated. I wanted a deeper relationship with God. I wanted to be more than someone who attended worship services

and participated in some programs. As with almost everyone who has gotten to my age, I had had some really good periods in my life, and some that were much more challenging. Yet as I looked back on the challenging times, I realized I was not alone, that I had been guided through these times by God. I wanted to learn more and be better in touch with this God who had been with me when I wasn’t paying attention. However, I had no idea where to begin this on my own.

Lord of Life’s Spiritual Mentoring Ministry has guided me through this process and opened my eyes to many amazing things. Working with my mentor I have found that this is not hard, nor intimidating. It is just a process and a commitment. It is ok to ask questions, search for deeper understanding and at times to be confused. That is why there is the Spiritual Mentoring Ministry and our greater Lord of Life community for resources. Working one-on-one with my mentor, I am able to see the gifts we all have, how often God is there, that He answers my prayers and how to truly have a relationship with Him. It is what He desires, and what will make me complete.

To begin your faith journey with a spiritual mentor, contact Jan Sower ([email protected] or 763.421.1524) or visit lordoflife.org/spiritualmentoring.

Lenten Prayer Experience on Saturday, March 2—

Spending Time with Godby Joni Tardiff, Prayer Ministries Leader

Lord of Life’s Prayer School, Prayer Ministries Team, and Word for Women are hosting a Lenten Prayer Experience on Saturday, March 2. What is the Lenten Prayer Experience? It is taking time in our busy lives

to be with God in quiet reflection and prayer. It is a time to say thank you to God, to share thoughts and worries, to ask for forgiveness, to lift up the concerns of others, and to be still in the presence of God.

A continental breakfast will be available beginning at 9:30 am, and the Prayer Experience will be from 10-11:30 am in the sanctuary. We will provide an atmosphere conducive to prayer along with written guidelines and suggestions for directing your prayer time.

Prayer ministers will be available to pray with you (intercessory prayer) throughout the prayer time. Written prayer request cards will also be provided. All ages are encouraged to attend this event. There will be special resources available for children. No pre-registration is required.

Come and be refreshed and renewed!

A happy heart is good medicine and a cheerful mind works healing,

but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength. Proverbs 17:22

A Happy Heartby Pastor Karen Greimel

A first glance at the Proverbs passage above begs the question, “How can we have a happy heart and a cheerful mind when something difficult is going on in our lives?” When I’m dealing

with an issue, I can become almost obsessed and neither my heart nor mind is a happy place. Normally, I tell myself that I will be better when I am healed from this. Unfortunately I assume that unless I am healed or relieved first from whatever is causing me trouble, I cannot have a happy heart or a cheerful mind. That is wrong thinking!

We must remember that we, as Christians, have a powerful source of happiness within us: the Holy Spirit! By the power of the Holy Spirit we are given the ability to live above our circumstances. It’s vital to remember that when our hearts are heavy we can ask for His help knowing that God takes great pleasure when we entrust ourselves to His loving and capable care.

I love what Sarah Young tells us in her book, Jesus Lives: “Your heart and mind are intricately connected. It is impossible to have a happy heart, when your mind is full of negative thoughts.” When this happens we are being pulled away from the healing strength of the Lord. This is the perfect time to ask the Holy Spirit for aid, inviting Him to help you take captive all thoughts and make them obedient to Christ. You can find Jesus during your difficult times.

All are welcome to this month’s healing service on Monday, March 11 at 6:30 pm; individual prayer appointments are also available. If you have any questions about Lord of Life’s Healing Ministry or to schedule a prayer appointment, please contact Pastor Karen Greimel directly ([email protected] or 763.420.5015 x144).

“Hola, Americanos!”by Jean Campbell

Hola, Americanos!” is what we heard as we drove along dirt roads of Dominican Republic (DR) mountain communities. The local families remembered the friendly Americans and were glad to see the 12 returning and 10 first-time volunteers.

The focus of our spiritual journey for the week was the Fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, self-control, and faithfulness). During evening devotional time, Pastor Dave McCarty reminded us how each of those fruits is a tool to use

in our own faith journey—and in our work in the DR. Each fruit was important as we interacted with our DR neighbors. Verbal communication efforts with two languages proved challenging but gestures, smiles, and handshakes or hugs (plus our ever-present translators) worked to fill in the gaps.

Part of our physical journey was working on the community center that will serve the surrounding communities. It will be an education center (electrical technician training, nutrition and diet, vegetable gardening, children’s programs, etc.). In addition, medical and dental volunteers will continue to set up temporary clinics there so the residents can receive needed care. And, it will still provide housing and meals for volunteers. We were able to pour the last 25 cement columns so the third/final floor of the facility can be built.

We also spent time out in the community. Three families who had been living with dirt floors now have cement floors. Two families who were trying to grow vegetables received help in weeding and replanting those gardens. The first phase of a demonstration garden at the center was created. We visited three schools to have fun with the children with playground games, songs, craft time and acting out a Bible story. Pastor Dave, with the assistance of a translator, was the guest preacher at a local church.

Ask any member of our team—we each felt the Holy Spirit working alongside the efforts of our “team.” We could feel the Spirit giving us energy and patience to serve, giving us joy because we were serving, and watching over us all the while. We left the DR tired but with a feeling of peace. And, with the question: How will we be faithful servants after leaving the Dominican Republic?

Time Again for the Men’s Retreat!by Merle Waldron

This is a great time to renew friendships or make new ones. It is a time to do absolutely nothing in the north woods of Wisconsin or to do so much

over the weekend that you have to go back to work to rest. It is up to you, you pick what you want to do and for the most part when you want to do it. Again this year, we’re headed to Heartwood Conference Center in Trego, Wisconsin. I encourage you to take a look at their website (heartwoodconferencecenter.com) to see all there is to do. In the Pines Village Duplexes each cabin will sleep 13 guys in 4 bedrooms. They even supply bedding and pillows. All meals are provided except for Saturday lunch; we are on our own for that. As in the past, we’ll golf on Friday and Saturday

during the day. However, Heartwood has many things that we can do in place of or in addition to golf—with over 700 acres of trails and the Namekagon River. You may choose to canoe, kayak, mountain bike, play basketball, tennis, horseshoes, volleyball, or go boating, fishing (remember you are in WI), hiking, swimming, plus many other games, or sit in the hot tub. Canoeing, kayaks and mountain bikes are at an additional cost. Dates are May 17-19; cost is $180 with golf on Saturday ($130 without golf). Limited spots are available (78), so sign up and reserve it online at lordoflife.org/mensretreat. Signups close on May 1. For more information, contact Merle Waldron (612.839.1934 or [email protected]).

Faithfully FIT!by Beth Kanthak, Health & Wellness Leader

With the arrival of spring this month and the celebration of Easter, this can be an ideal time to review and reflect on your spiritual health. Spring is a time of new beginnings, growth, and renewal of your commitment to be faithfully fit and the perfect time to

incorporate heart rate zone training to get our hearts in shape for Christ. For my physical health, I really enjoy working out. It makes me feel great, it gives me energy and lifts my spirits. While I enjoy all different types of exercise, there is one regimen I like the best—heart rate zone training. It’s absolutely the most efficient and effective way to achieve my fitness goals. I can burn more calories and see results faster. It takes my workout to a whole new level! Now this isn’t a marketing ploy to go out and buy a heart rate monitor…what this is however, is a calling…Christ is looking for disciples and this will require some heart rate zone training: physical and spiritual.

be

activefor the

purpose of

godliness

Have I “spiked” your curiosity? Let’s keep this zone training explanation simple, with physical exercise:Warm-up: This zone prepares your body for

exercise.

Light Activity: This is a little more intense, just a slight bump up from the warm-up zone.

Endurance: Strengthen your heart muscle—this zone is preferred for an endurance event.

Push/Anaerobic: This zone consists of short duration, high-intensity muscular activity that develops stronger muscles. This zone helps endurance and fights fatigue.

Red or All-out: This zone is maximum effort and the most intense—only for short spurts of time. Training in this zone helps you reach maximum potential. Red or all-out zone is a give it all you got!

For spiritual growth and maturity, you must incorporate zone training. By following this regimen, you will be an efficient and effective disciple for Christ. It will take your life to a whole new level: Warm-Up: This zone prepares your heart for Christ. Be still, be present, and connect with

Christ.

Light Activity: This prepares your mind and attitude for the day. This requires reading your Bible, meditating on His Word and prayer…asking God for strength, guidance, and wisdom.

Endurance: This zone is for being a doer of the Word. First feel the power of Christ surging through your heart giving strength to love and serve God; the second phase is going out and working for the Lord. This is doing God’s work over and over and over…continually exercising love, compassion, gentleness, kindness. This strengthens your heart, giving endurance for your lifetime journey with Christ.

Push: Requiring you to push through and love unconditionally, push through and pursue righteousness and godliness, push through with forgiveness and push through pursuing peace and harmony. This zone will test you and when tempted to give in to selfish and prideful ways you are required to push through and choose to exercise Christ-like character. In exercising these push phases successfully, you will develop very strong spiritual muscles.

Red or All-out: This zone requires maximum effort during your most intense challenges or trials. It’s an all-out surrender with trust in God. It may even require short spurts of prayer on your knees. This zone is mandatory in reaching your full potential as a disciple of Christ.

Luke 9:23 says, Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. God is looking for all-out disciples; qualified Christians must be obedient to heart rate zone training for transformational change! And let me not forget to mention a cool down phase. Just as a cool down is essential after an exercise routine, so it is with your spiritual exercise…your spiritual cool down will occur as you rest in the loving arms of the Lord. Happy Spring!

Keep your FaithfullyFIT! momentum going—stay tuned for more health & wellness wisdom from Beth Kanthak. If you would like to contact her directly, she may be reached at [email protected] or 763.229.4896.

Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to

order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow. —Melody Beattie

Having an attitude of gratitude may transform everyday disappointments and frustrations. It can provide a valuable perspective when facing difficult problems. Gratitude can be an antidote to today’s sometimes frenzied lifestyles, helping to reconnect us with what’s truly important in life. We can be grateful for the everyday blessings that are ever-present and ever-sustaining.

Holy Communion is one of two sacraments observed in the Lutheran Church; baptism is the other. Communion instruction is

an extremely important part of a child’s Christian education and a milestone in their faith journey. Fifth graders and their parents will attend First Communion preparation this month. Sixth through ninth graders (and their parents) who have not received communion instruction are also invited. If you have not signed up, please do so now at lordoflife.org/firstcommunion. The dates are Saturday, March 16 or Monday, March 18. First Communion weekend is April 6 and 7. Visit lordoflife.org/firstcommunion or contact Lynn at [email protected] for more information.

New Life Plantings(not just for kids!)by Lynn Leisen, Faith in the Home

As Easter approaches, be reminded of the new life we have in Christ Jesus. Use one of these ideas to create new life plantings.

sweet potatoes:Put a whole sweet potato in a glass jar with the small end down. Use toothpicks to hold the potato up. Add enough water to the jar so that the bottom of the potato is kept wet. Place jar in a sunny window and watch the roots grow down while the leaves sprout up.

fruit seeds:The dried seeds from fruits such as oranges, lemons, apples, grapefruits, or pumpkins will sprout when shallowly planted in a paper cup of potting soil. Water every day, but don’t overwater. Soon small plants will begin to grow.

lima beans:Line a glass jar with a paper towel. Place dry lima beans that have been soaked in water several hours between the paper towel and the jar so that you can see them. Put a small amount of water in the jar and add enough each day to keep the towel damp. Place in a sunny window. Watch God’s creation at work!

easter grass:To grow grass seed in a dish, fill the dish with potting soil. Sprinkle fast-growing rye grass seed in the soil. Place the dish in bright, indirect light and water to keep the soil damp. Cover loosely with plastic wrap until the seeds germinate. Remove plastic wrap when the grass begins to grow, in about one week. The color is beautiful and it’s fun to “mow the lawn” when there’s still snow on the ground outside. If you plant grass in a large enough dish or lined basket, you can place a few Easter eggs in the grass on Easter morning!

lenten service projectELCA World Hunger provides relief, helps people help themselves, advocates and educates. During Lent, Church School children are collecting money for the ELCA World Hunger Appeal. Families may place special banks on their dining tables to collect change each time they share a meal. The banks are returned to their Church School classes or to the CYF office any time in April. Your gifts provide food, clean water, seeds, tools, trees, animals, education, life, and hope. Thank you!

Come Lord Jesus, be our guest, and let these gifts to us be blessed.Blessed be God, who is our bread;may all the world be clothed and fed.Amen.

Happy March!by Angie Schiebel, Director of Karing Kingdom Preschool

Karing Kingdom begins the month of March celebrating Lutheran Schools Week from March 3-9. Our theme for this special week is Teaching...From the Heart. Our daily example of Jesus coming to this world to serve, not be

served will be emphasized as we use Lutheran School Week to highlight special service projects for The Ronald McDonald House. Next, St. Patrick’s Day festivities will be filled with leprechauns, rainbows, and pots of gold. As our month draws to a close we will begin the celebration of Easter and learn about the impact of Jesus’ life on earth and resurrection with crosses, butterflies, and Easter lilies. Karing

Kingdom Preschool wishes you all a blessed Easter!

Karing Kingdom will be closed for Easter break from March 25-April 1. Classes resume beginning April 2. Registration continues for the 2013-14 school year. For more information, please call 763.420.5015 x127 or email [email protected].

1978 Lord of Life Lutheran Church Charter (ELCA)

Lord of Life is a community of people called together by God’s Holy Spirit who confess Christ as Lord. We wish to be a church whose door is open to all people. And with the guidance of the Holy Spirit we will strive to educate, comfort, aid and spread the word of love in Christ’s name. We believe worship is of most importance in our life together as we receive God’s love through Word and Sacrament. We will be involved with seeking justice in our community, state, nation, and world. We hold high the dignity and worth of every human being as created in God’s image and forgiven in Christ. We hope to be a serving church, in the name of Him who came as Servant of all.

Be a Good Samaritan at Good Samaritanby Georgia Helvick

Good Samaritan Society - Ambassador residents and staff started assembling food packs for the KidPack program in December. The center needs about 10 volunteers per assembly with assemblies done twice a month throughout 2013. Please consider

volunteering on any of these dates: March 12 or 26, April 16 or 30, May 14 or 28. Two volunteers are needed every Friday at 8:30 am, to deliver the food packs to students at Neill Elementary in Crystal. To volunteer or inquire about dates and times, please contact Jackie Dale (763-417-7132 or [email protected]). The KidPack program provides a weekend food program for low-income children to provide nutritious, kid-friendly food to children who may not otherwise receive adequate nutrition.

There are also many other volunteer opportunities available at Good Samaritan Society in New Hope. Pet visits, third Sunday service musicians/singers, visiting one-on-one with residents, playing games with residents, and more. This is a rewarding experience for young and old! Try it—you might find yourself enjoying making a difference in the elderly residents’ lives.

Questions about this ministry partnership? Contact Georgia Helvick at 763.416.4577.
