WELCOMEThe Lord Mayor’s Christmas Carols is a Brisbane tradition bringing together generations of families, friends and communities. We hope you enjoy this spectacular event as we bring you some Christmas cheer.

This songbook features the lyrics to some well-known Christmas carols and songs, which we encourage you to join us in singing. It also includes the many outstanding artists, creatives and production crew who provide their talents, helping to bring the passion and joy of Christmas to the city.

Christmas is a magical time for children and tonight we are raising funds to help our city’s most vulnerable with the Children’s Hospital Foundation. A donation can be made by purchasing merchandise from the Children’s Hospital Foundation tent or by purchasing the song Christmas in Killarney, recorded especially for this year’s festive season, and performed for the first time tonight by Murphy’s Pigs.

There is nowhere better in the world to spend Christmas than in our stunning subtropical city. While this has been a year like no other, our treasured Christmas festivities are rolling out across the city.

It is my pleasure to welcome you to this year’s festive program of events, which has been planned with coronavirus safety precautions in place so you can ring in the festive season in a safe and fun environment.

The Lord Mayor’s Christmas Carols are a beloved yearly tradition, and in this year’s program you will find some of the lyrics to tonight’s Christmas songs and carols. Join the many talented artists here tonight and sing along to your favourite Christmas classics.

These Christmas Carols are one of the many events in this year’s reimagined Christmas in Brisbane program. Our giant Brisbane City Christmas Tree will again be illuminated in King George Square, there will be live pop-up performances in the Queen Street Mall and over the river take a look at the Christmas Tree Spectacular at South Bank.

While enjoying the festivities, make sure you support our local businesses. Shop for gifts, indulge in some great food and hospitality at the myriad of pubs, restaurants and cafes and let’s make this year’s Brisbane Christmas festivities unforgettable.

WORKING WONDERS FOR SICK KIDSChildren’s Hospital Foundation

GRACE’S STORYLittle Grace is a fighter and has been in and out of Queensland Children’s Hospital for two years following a leukaemia diagnosis in 2018.

A few weeks after Grace commenced treatment, she got an infection. She was admitted to hospital for several weeks and ended up in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, ventilated and in kidney failure. She also had a bleed in her intestine and had to be rushed to theatre to repair it.

The chemotherapy gave her severe neuropathy (when nerve damage leads to pain, weakness, numbness or tingling) and she stopped walking. Thankfully, with weekly physiotherapy and hard work, she was able to start walking again. Sadly, just a few months later she broke her leg, and because Grace had developed brittle bones from the treatment, it took many months to heal. Grace had to learn to walk for a second time.

Grace’s mum, Philippa told us, “The Children’s Hospital Foundation volunteers have been absolutely amazing. When we have had long stays in hospital, they make it easier with the services they provide and their friendly smiles. Grace is often confined to her room during an admission, so the volunteers deliver toys and books for her to play with, which is absolutely amazing. They also gave Grace a beautiful quilt to make her room feel more like home, which was wonderful! They made an overwhelming experience just a little easier.”

“When in hospital, one of Grace’s favourite things was pet therapy. She loves dogs! Whenever she received a visit from one of them, she was always up and ready to give them a pat. Her other favourite activity was music therapy. The relaxing music provided to Grace when she was in PICU was amazing,” Philippa said.

It is hoped that brave little Grace will finally finish treatment in November this year and get to spend a magical Christmas at home with her family.

Philippa said “We are so proud of Grace. On top of everything that comes with a leukaemia diagnosis, Grace also had to learn to walk again, not once but twice. We are planning a big celebration at the end of her treatment. We can’t wait.”

DANE LAMThe young Australian-Chinese conductor, Dane Lam, Principal Conductor of China’s Xi’an Symphony Orchestra, enjoys a career spanning three continents. With a particularly close relationship with London’s Opera Holland Park, he is equally at home in the theatre as on the concert platform.

Last season’s engagements included Dane’s debut with Opera Australia, conducting La bohème; a return to Opera Holland Park for a new production of L’arlesiana; his mainstage debut with Opera Queensland in Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice; Carl Davis’s A Christmas Carol with Het Residentie Orkest and De Dutch Don’t Dance Division in The Hague; concerts with the Adelaide and Suzhou Symphony Orchestras and the Orchestra of Scottish Opera.

CHARLI ROBINSON Charli Robinson was an original member of the hugely successful kids’ band Hi-5 and is one of Australia’s best-loved personalities. She has appeared on numerous television shows including Network Ten’s It’s a Knockout, Seven Network’s Spring Racing Carnival, as a regular presenter on 9News Weather and as a finalist on the eighth season of Dancing with the Stars.

Charli has co-hosted SeaFM’s high rating breakfast show on the Gold Coast, appeared as a guest host on Triple M Sydney and is a guest presenter on 9Now’s Getaway.

Watch the Lord Mayor’s Christmas Carols broadcast on Saturday 19 December at 4pm and Friday December 25 at 6am on Channel 9.

THE ARTISTS

MIRUSIAMirusia studied opera at the Queensland Conservatorium and at the age of 21 was announced as the youngest ever recipient of the Dame Joan Sutherland Opera Award. After graduation, her career blossomed when she toured the world for 11 years as a featured soloist with André Rieu and the Johann Strauss Orchestra.

As a solo artist she has embarked on several successful international tours in support of her acclaimed albums This Time Tomorrow and From the Heart. In late 2019, she launched her new touring project Mirusia and the Original Seekers, featuring the founding members of The Seekers. She has ended the year launching the album, Christmas Memories.

DAMI IMDami Im is one of Australia’s most respected artists. A piano virtuoso, she also has a Master of Music Studies in Contemporary Voice, and first captured our attention and hearts when she won The X Factor Australia in 2013.

Her self-titled debut album and single Alive both debuted at No.1 on the ARIA charts, and she went on to release three more acclaimed studio albums, which she has performed all around the world. In 2016, Dami became Eurovision royalty when she earned the highest score ever achieved by an Australian entry, and her single Sound of Silence charted globally. Dami’s single Paper Dragon is out now.

GRAEME ISAAKOAn accomplished singer, dancer and actor, Graeme made his main stage debut in 2002 at the age of 13, in Cameron Macintosh’s production of Oliver – The Musical, in the role of Dipper. He was a popular contestant in the first season of So You Think You Can Dance Australia, achieving a Top 6 placement and has regularly appeared on The X Factor Australia and The Voice Australia as a back-up dancer for Timomatic, Jessica Mauboy, Samantha Jade, Jessie J, Ricky Martin and Duffy.

Graeme featured in the Australian production of Disney’s The Lion King and has toured Australia, New Zealand and Singapore in the role of Aladdin in Disney’s Aladdin the Musical. Graeme’s most recent career achievement has been as a singing contestant on The Voice Australia in 2020.

SUNFLOWERFounded by frontwoman Kahlia Ferguson and singer/songwriter Lawson Doyle, this Brisbane band also features Dave Webster (lead guitar), and brothers Sam Woods (bass) and Luke Woods (drums). Collectively they have shared stages with Wolfmother, Powderfinger, Jet, Missy Higgins, Busby Marou, Sheppard, The Cat Empire and The Jungle Giants.

Sunflower’s exciting fusion roots and soul-rock has resonated with audiences across Australia and they are fast emerging as one of the must-see acts on the festival circuit.

ANGELA FABIANWith roots tracing back to Omaha, Nebraska, Angela Fabian first found her voice singing gospel music as a youngster before touring the United States and Canada with her all-girl band.

Angela later found herself working as a musician for the United Nations, performing for troops in some of the world’s most dangerous war zones. Now based in Brisbane, Angela released her debut album Arms Opened Wide in 2016. The album celebrates some of her musical heroes including Tina Turner, Ray Charles, Angie Stone, Chaka Khan and Nina Simone. In 2020 she wowed audiences with her appearances on Channel 9’s The Voice Australia.

The Brisbane-based ensemble has clocked up hundreds of appearances across the globe, winning over audiences with their fusion of traditional opera and mainstream music.

With stunning voices, classic arrangements, looks and glamour, The 7 Sopranos have become a hit amongst music lovers of all genres. The 7 Sopranos are Ashleigh Denning, Olympia Frangiosa, Xenia Puskarz-Thomas, Alla Yarosh, Panayiota Kalatzis, Jessica Low and Marcia Penman.

LA FORZALa Forza blends together the talents of three of Australia and New Zealand’s top professional vocalists, who have performed internationally on London’s West End and throughout Europe, USA, South Africa, Canada and Asia.

Performing spine-tingling renditions of modern day classics from the likes of Josh Groban, Il Divo, Andrea Bocelli and Michael Bublé, as well as Rat Pack standards, La Forza exudes class and pure vocal power. La Forza features tenors Gregory Moore, Scott Muller and Michael Hart.

TIM McCALLUMTim is one of Australia’s most loved local performers and is fast becoming an international phenomenon. At the age of 18, he was commencing his career in music when a diving accident changed his life forever. He was left paralysed from the chest down with only partial use of his arms.

Altering his singing technique to compensate, he now sings better than ever and is able to soar to the heights of some of the great tenor arias ever written. In 2020, he was chosen to sing the national anthem at the AFL Grand Final, at the Gabba and also released a Christmas Album, Let Your Heart Be Light.

BRADLEY DALEYSince making his debut with the English National Opera as Rodolfo in La bohème, Bradley has worked with Opera companies all over the world including Australia, the UK, Belgium, Italy, France and Germany.

Most recently, Bradley sang Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly for Opera Queensland and Sigmund in Der Ring des Nibelungen for Opera Australia. He has performed as Siegfried in both Siegfried and Götterdämmerung for Kiel Opera Germany and Walter in The Mastersingers of Nuremberg Act III concert for the State Opera of South Australia.

MILIJANA NIKOLIC AND REBECCA CASSIDYAs the state opera company for Queensland, our mission is to bring opera to all Queenslanders, regardless of where you live. Opera Queensland connects with metropolitan, regional and remote centres through a rich array of performances, education activities and community programs. Our annual program offers something for everyone from first time opera goers to diehard supporters, passionate about the power of opera to transform the way we understand ourselves and each other.

Performing for Opera Queensland tonight are Milijana Nikolic and Rebecca Cassidy. Serbian-born Milijana has sung leading mezzo-soprano roles across the globe and helped Opera Queensland celebrate their return to QPAC in October this year. Rebecca is the Opera Queensland Young Artist for 2020. During her time as the company’s Young Artist, Rebecca has received specialised tuition, as well as performed in many live and online events.

BRISBANE CITY GOSPEL CHOIRFounded in 2010 by Tosin Adewumi (Music Director), the Brisbane City Gospel Choir is a melting pot of cultures with members of many different nationalities and backgrounds. The choir is recognised locally and internationally with appearances on Channel Seven’s Sunrise, at the MegaFest International Choir Showcase in Dallas, Texas and at Splendour in the Grass with Hayden James.

Versatile and brimming with energy, the choir’s trademark sound combines the richness of contemporary gospel music with many other styles of popular music, including RnB and Soul.

MURPHY’S PIGSMade up of currently serving and ex-members of the Queensland Police Service, this award-winning Celtic ensemble have delighted fans in Australia and abroad with appearances at the world’s largest Celtic Festival; Festival Interceltique de Lorient in France, the Tamworth Country Music Festival, Woodford Folk Festival, the Gympie Music Muster and Australian Celtic Festival.

The band has twice been awarded Artist of the Year (2013 & 2016) at the Australian Celtic Music Awards and recorded seven CDs and a concert DVD. In 2020 they released the single, Christmas in Killarney, with all proceeds from sales going to the Lord Mayor’s Christmas Carols’s charity, the Children’s Hospital Foundation.

JASON McGREGORJason McGregor’s warm, passionate vocal tone, likened to John Mayer and James Morrison, has made him a much sought-after talent. A national finger style guitar champion, he has toured with notable performers such as international country superstar Adam Brand, The Voice Australia’s Luke Kennedy and Australian Idol Finalist, Paulini.

In 2016 he won the The People’s Choice Award at the Gold Coast Music Awards. Jason’s other accolades include winning in three categories for the Australian Songwriter Awards and taking home a QMusic Award with Gold Coast legends, The Lamplights.

ELLEN REEDEllen Reed shot to national attention as superstar coach Jessie J’s grand finalist on the fifth season of top-rating TV show The Voice Australia. Placing fourth overall, Ellen won the hearts of a nation with her soaring voice, giant heart and unshakeable spirit. Since leaving the show, Ellen’s popularity and profile has continued to soar as she’s cemented her voice not only as one of Australia’s most gifted singer/songwriters, but as a passionate brand ambassador and activist.

In 2018 she was appointed a guest judge on the new reality TV singing show All Together Now and in 2019 released her new single, You Have Been Warned.

ZEEK POWERQueenslander Zeek Power was one of Australia’s favourite contestants from The Voice Australia in 2019, capturing the hearts of Australian audiences and reaching the grand final representing Team Kelly Rowland.

With his appearance on The Voice Australia, this gifted and unique artist has become a rising star. His relentless live touring schedule, including supports for Sheppard and Busby Marou; has earned him a large following in Australia. With his ‘ult-R&B’ twist on pop song writing, he is rapidly becoming a worldwide YouTube sensation.

LUKE ANTONY With his uniquely soulful voice and energetic live performances, Luke Antony is one of Australia’s most sought after entertainers. Inspired by the world’s great soul singers like Stevie Wonder and Al Green, he has an impressive vocal range that has encouraged comparisons to the likes of Sam Smith and Adam Lambert. You may recognise Luke from The Voice Australia Season 7 finals where his coach Boy George dubbed him the next George Michael.

A familiar face to Carols audiences, Luke says this event is a highlight of his year.

VOICES OF BIRRALEE – YOUTH CHOIRLaunched in 1995, Brisbane’s Voices of Birralee is one of Australia’s finest youth arts organisations, with approximately 400 choristers, aged five to 35 years across six ensembles. The organisation provides unique growth opportunities with highlights including fulfilling a five year (2015–2019) commitment to the Department of Veterans’ Affairs performing at First World War centenary services on the Western Front, Europe. The choir has also performed at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and with Queensland Symphony Orchestra and Queensland Pops Orchestra.

CAMERATA – QUEENSLAND’S CHAMBER ORCHESTRA Performing without a conductor, Camerata’s Artistic Associates and their guests proudly take full ownership of their music-making in the spirit of chamber music to form a thriving, refreshing and acclaimed voice to empower artists, inspire audiences, and enrich communities through music. Under Artistic Director Brendan Joyce, the group is Company-in-Residence at Queensland Performing Arts Centre and undertakes an annual regional Queensland tour and subscription concert season in both Brisbane and Toowoomba.

CHILDREN’S CHRISTMAS SPECTACULAR AND SANTA PARADEChildren play an enormous part in how we celebrate the festive season and the tradition of Christmas. Recognising the talent of young people and the special place that Christmas has in the hearts of children, the Lord Mayor’s Christmas Carols presents the Children’s Christmas Spectacular and Santa Parade. This year features performers from the Davidia Lind Dance Centre (D.L.D.C).

U.P AGENCY Kristy Ellis – Creative Director & Choreographer

Under the direction of Kristy Ellis, this will be U.P Agency’s 10th year partnering with the Lord Mayor’s Christmas Carols. With years of industry experience, an impeccable track record, and a portfolio of incredible clients, Kristy is sought after in the events industry for her versatility and creativity.

Kristy’s highlight of the Carols each year is producing the Children’s segment and offering community performers the opportunity to perform in the Children’s Christmas Spectacular.

U.P Agency prides itself on providing clients with creative and stunning solutions in events and entertainment. From concept to post-event, U.P Agency manages all aspects of production, styling, staff, choreography and performers.

VOCAL MANOEUVRES ACADEMY CAROLS CHOIRAlison Rogers – Vocal Director

The carols choir and backing vocalists feature singers from The Queensland Festival Chorus and Vocal Manoeuvres Academy. This collective consists of singers from all walks of life and facets of the community; devoting their passion, time and considerable talent to come together as an outstanding chorus and specialist vocal ensemble to perform at the Lord Mayor’s Christmas Carols. Alison Rogers has pioneered many innovative choral programs throughout Queensland and abroad. Recent career highlights include creative consultant to Creative Generation and choral director for Jocelyn Pook’s work Memorial for Brisbane Festival 2018.

DRUM CAMP ALL STARSFounded by Matt Cocking in 2012, Drum Camp All Stars is an education program for young percussionists who have a desire and urge to pursue excellence in percussion. Camps are based around the philosophy of ‘Play. Learn. Drum.’ and teach the students to embrace all facets of percussion equally.
