The Administration, Faculty and Friends of Loras College are met here today to recognize accomplishment in learning and wisdom. In the past four years these graduating seniors have worked with the Loras

community to realize a dedication to truth, an appreciation of beauty and love for excellence in the liberal arts and sciences. So, in the name of previous graduates, and anticipating your further growth in wisdom

and learning, and in dedicated and resourceful leadership, I charge you, graduating seniors, to be true to the ideals you have adopted, and, in particular, to the ideal which Loras has ever fostered.

Response by the Class of 2019Student Body President: In this hour of our graduation it is fitting

Academic Costume In America

Symbols of Learning

The academic procession as you see it today is a pageant made colorful by the dress and ceremony inherited from the medieval universities of the 11th and 12th centuries. The

principal features of academic dress are three: the gown, the cap and the hood.

To preserve the dignity and meaning of these features, American universities agreed on a definite system in 1895 and set up a code of academic dress for the colleges

and universities of the United States. In 1932, the American Council of Education presented a revised code which largely governs the style of academic dress used in

our country today.

The Gown

The flowing gown comes from the 12th century. Some think it was worn in former times as protection against the cold of unheated buildings. It has become symbolic of the

democracy of scholarship, for it completely covers any dress of rank or social standing underneath. It is usually black with pointed sleeves for the Bachelor’s degree; long,

closed sleeves for the Master’s degree, with a slit for the arm; and round, open sleeves for the Doctor’s degree. For the Bachelor’s or Master’s degree the gown has no trimmings.

For the Doctor’s degree it is faced down the front with velvet and has three bars of velvet across the sleeves in the color distinctive of the faculty or discipline to which the degree pertains. Some colors most frequently seen and the fields they represent are as follows:

blue—philosophy; purple—law; green—medicine; yellow—science; light blue—education; red—theology; and white—literature and humane letters. The official colors

of the college may appear on the gown or its decorations.

The Cap

When Roman law freed the slaves, they won the privilege of wearing a cap. And so the academic cap is a sign of the freedom of scholarship and the responsibility and dignity

with which scholarship endows the wearer. Old poetry records the cap of scholarship as square to symbolize the book. The gold tassel on the cap denotes doctorate.

The Hood

Heraldically the hood is an inverted shield with one or more chevrons of a secondary color on the ground of the primary color of the college. The color of the facing of the

hood denotes the discipline represented by the degree; the color of the lining of the hood designates the college by which the degree was granted.
