After consultations with players, coaches, and sports medicine experts; after countless trials, formulations and test plots; and after extensive field testing, FieldTurf was born. The first and only system to replicate natural grass, FieldTurf revolutionized the world of turf. And, in many ways, it changed forever the world of sport itself. Pure innovation has taken FieldTurf from an upstart company to the summit of the industry, with over 1900 installations worldwide!

FieldTurf’s founders Jean Prevost and John Gilman, were sportsmen, not carpet-makers; former players and coaches, not turf salesmen. They knew the problems associated with keeping grass fields in top shape - and also the dangers of the early artificial turf products. Despite innumerable obstacles, they dedicated themselves to - and succeeded in - developing a synthetic system with the beneficial bio-mechanical properties of natural grass, combined with the best attributes of synthetics: durability, low maintenance and unlimited playing time.



The History of FieldTurf

• FieldTurf started in the sport surfacing industry in 1988 with the manufacture of NovaCourt, a synthetic grass for tennis courts and NovaTee, a synthetic surface used to minimize wear and tear around golf practice tees under the name SynTenni Co.

• Based on a need to replicate real grass with these installations, the company began developing synthetic turf surfaces for other sports installations including soccer, lacrosse, football and baseball. NovaTee was re-engineered as a playing surface for contact sports and college teams

A durable "spine" runs vertically through the center of each fiber providing unmatched "memory" and resistance to matting. Treated with UV inhibiters, the fiber is more resistant to foot traffic yet remains silky and non-abrasive.

The backing is made of a combination of permeable woven and non-woven poly-propylene fabrics to provide exceptional strength and unmatched vertical drainage.Silica Sand Cryogenic Rubber

FiberThe arched profile of this monofilament fiber is based on similar structures found in nature. Extruded through a "spinnerette," this “true” monofilament fiber delivers unmatched durability, especially resistance to wear. Tests indicate that although this fiber is far more durable, it remains silky and lush, just like nature intended. The monofilament system is available in over 20 colors.

InfillThe washed silica sand does not break down from use or heavy traffic. The cryogenic rubber is recycled rubber, frozen and shattered, creating smooth-sided spherical particles. As compared to 3 pounds of ambient rubber found in most other artificial turf, each square foot of FieldTurf contains 7 pounds of silica sand plus 3 pounds of cryogenic rubber. A base layer of silica sand is followed by up to 21 individual layers of mixed silica sand and cryogenic rubber and then topped with a final layer of specially graded cryogenic rubber which stays on the top of the infill system.

BackingThe fibers are tufted (stitched) into the backing material in rows according to a patented wide gauge spacing formula that enables cleats to penetrate the infill material rather than the surface fiber. This provides excellent traction and very low torsion resistance that prevents injuries. Our patented “finger unit system” adds an impermeable coating over the back of each row of stitching, creating a chemical and mechanical bond for enhanced "tuft bind," leaving the rest of the backing material totally permeable and creating rows of superior drainage channels.

The Choice of Responsible CommunitiesInstallation of a FieldTurf field eliminates the use of harmful pesticides, fertilizers and herbicides, while at the same time, removes over 40,000 tires from landfill sites. FieldTurf requires no mowing, fertilizing, re-seeding or watering. A typical soccer / football field can use between 2.5 million and 3.5 million gallons of water per year. Coupled with reduced labor costs related to maintenance, equipment and elimination of costs for supplies such as fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides, many of our clients report a reduction in maintenance costs of as much as $30,000 to $60,000 per field, per year.

Sharing a Commitment to the EnvironmentFieldTurf has made a commitment to reducing our impact on the environment. To this end, FieldTurf looks for innovative ways to reduce waste, reuse resources and recycle products. FieldTurf uses a clean, washed silica sand and "cryogenic" rubber, the only rubber used in a FieldTurf field. Its extensive recycling process eliminates all metallic and polyester residues. This process ensures that toxins are not leaked into the environment. Rigorous standards are in place within the recycling industry.
