LOOKING BACK ON THE YEAR WITH PRIDE

The close of the year often brings on reflection that scores the highs and lows of the past 12 months. I teem with pride as I recall the Club’s achievements in 2016.

Our swim team has done exceptionally well. In particular, Ashley Lim, Marcus Choo, Charity Lien, Faith Elizabeth Khoo and Chloe Wang have performed outstandingly at the 47th Singapore National Age Group Swimming Championships and collectively brought home a total of 34 medals. At the Club level, our junior team beat 12 local and foreign swim teams, and took back the Open Invitational Midget Meet championship.

It has been just as exciting at the F&B front with new head chefs helming the kitchens—Master Chef Kit for Jade Phoenix, our Chinese fine dining restaurant, and Senior Sous Chef Kevin for Jackson Miller, our Western casual semi-fine dining restaurant. Both have introduced signature dishes that have won over the gourmets among our members and given our F&B takings a significant boost.

Earlier this year, we headlined our recreational offerings with a series of monthly themed nights such as Elvis Presley and Halloween Dance that saw great turn-outs at D’Tanjong. Some themes the Events team is considering for next year include: Motown, Jazz and The 1960s. We welcome you to send in your theme suggestions.

The Communications Department that produces this magazine has launched a revamped Club website sswimclub.org.sg earlier this year. The new site is attractive, intuitive and functional, and enables members to register their interests for courses and events easily. Since going online in October, its visitor number and page views have increased multifold. I encourage you to check out the new website if you have not yet done so.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank my Management Committee and the Club management and staff for making these achievements and many others happen.

While we surround ourselves with good food and delightful company in the next two months, let’s not forget that this is not only a gifting season but a giving one as well. There are many others in Singapore who are less fortunate and do not have the means for a decent living, let alone spend on luxury. Remember them this season and do what you can for them—a monetary donation to a social service organisation or pay its beneficiaries a visit to spread some cheers. Show your kindness by offering your time and treasure.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

THE LOST ART

The late superstar Bruce Lee played the role of Huo Yuan Jia’s student in the movie Fist of Fury. Huo was a Chinese pugilist who developed an amalgamated form of martial arts called “The Lost Art” (迷宗拳). Sadly, this Lost Art is now a lost heritage. Like this art of combat, the art of communication through good manners seems to be in danger of becoming a lost art in current society too.

Good manners start at home. Since we were young, most of us have been taught two golden phrases—“sorry” and “thank you”, which are the cornerstones of good manners. It takes humility to say “sorry” but that golden word can save one from much pain and sorrow, and even open the doors to healing and restoration while saying “thank you” demonstrates gratitude and appreciation. I too have passed on the good manners I learnt from my parents to my children. My son is not on the best of terms with our domestic helper but his greeting to her every time he comes home warms my heart, as he persists in doing the right thing despite her indifference.

In what seems to be an epic case of this lost art, I received a lengthy email from a member that was replete with bold upper case and laced with derogatory words to emphasise his disagreement over certain issues. It saddened me to see how a seemingly respectable person could morph into a totally different one in his writing. Good manners are expected in a refined society and more so in a Premier Family Club. Being considerate is a part of being civil. If you have that awareness, you have good manners. Although it is not compulsory to clear your food tray at the Club’s self-service outlets, you are encouraged to do so for hygiene reasons. It also shows your consideration for the next user of the table.

We know that security checks at airports can be such a pain. However, I am grateful to the security staff who help make flying safer and I never fail to thank them whenever I have to go through these checks. Likewise, some members have shown their understanding and appreciation to our security staff for their persistence in conducting membership checks. Hence, do not feel offended when your next of kin tell you they have been stopped from coming into the Club for producing your membership card instead of their own. It is heartening to see our staff appreciated by members and treated like family. Recently, one of my staff approached me in tears. She had been fighting a health issue and several members who came to know about it offered to help her financially. Not that she needed the aid but how not to be touched by such humanity and warmth of this Family Club that goes beyond good manners?

To cultivate a culture of appreciation, we have introduced colourful compliment cards at various locations in the Club several months ago for members to pen their words of thanks. We have since been inundated daily with effusive praise as well as positive and constructive feedback from members on the food, service and facilities. This goes to show that most of our members are cultured, have not lost the art of good manners and do not hesitate to show their appreciation. Rejoice, you are in good company.

Have a Blessed Christmas and Happy New Year!

Twenty-seven participants of our Learn-to-Swim programme, including the youngest at four years old, took part in this year’s second and last Kick & Swim Meet.

The swimmers had to demonstrate proper kicking techniques during the race, hence the event namesake. The Meet also aims to expose our young swimmers to competitive swimming.

A mainstay of the event has been the Parents & Child Relay, which has provided a great opportunity for parents to bond through competition with their children.

Singapore Swimming Club participated at Singapore Masters Swimming Championship (Sprints), held this year at OCBC Aquatic Centre. Twenty-five particpants from our Masters Swim training programme and three of our coaches took part in 54 individual and 13 relay events.
