Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you think you have learnt in the progression

from it to the full product?

My Preliminary Task

• Preliminary exercise: Continuity task involving filming and editing a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character, with whom she/he then exchanges a couple of lines of dialogue. This task should demonstrate match on action, shot/reverse shot and the 180 degree rule.

My Preliminary Task• Our preliminary task wasn’t our best work. It was a great task

to do before beginning our production, as it gave us the chance to learn from many mistakes. During the preliminary we didn’t even know what the 180 degree angle was, luckily we got the shot by accident! The video was very average, the short time and lack of preparation resulted in no continuity – this was something we certainly needed to resolve before beginning our production!

• For the future, we need to plan more thoroughly, give ourselves more time to set out exactly what we are going to accomplish. We could do this through storyboarding, and planning out what we will do, and when we will do it.

Action Match• Practicing the action match shot in this preliminary task

proved very beneficial as we ended up using an action match shot in our final production, it was very useful and helpful practice.

Shot Reverse Shot

• Practicing camera angles like this will be beneficial in the future, as I believe it is the most effective way to film a conversation between two characters. In our preliminary task we demonstrated it and angled it well ensuring the shots matched up when switching from shoulder to shoulder.

180-degree rule

• This proved good practice as, yes we did get the 180-degree shot – BUT it was by accident! Learning from this we now know what the 180-degree rule is.
