ST. IGNATIUS OF LOYOLA 549

fighting factor of the will in most telling fashion against the false teaching of Luther and Calvin which made that noble faculty the helpless slave of predestination.

Never, surely, did a saintly reformer make such use of militant principles and methods as Ignatius. Well justified, indeed, were the words of Paul III, which stated that when men " are enrolled in this army of Jesus Christ they must be always ready, night and day, with loins girt up."I

LOOKING BACK-AND LOOKING AHEAD.

Prom afar we saw His image dimly limned against the sky, But we hastened on our way and seldom paused to meet

His eye; Though we loved Him for His goodness which our hearts

e'en then perceived, Yet our thoughtless words and actions that kind Friend

have often grieved.

For the world was thrilling, beauteous, from the mountains to the sea,

Full of action, strife, and movement that can fill the heart with glee

So with friends we followed swiftly after earth's compelling joys,

While Our Saviour's wisest counsel was nigh drowned out by the noise.

Still we never fully yielded, nor were trapped by hidden snare,

In our hearts, was constant refuge 'gainst this world's surrounding blare.

We are ready now to serve Him, Whom before we dimly saw,

As our hearts in glad obedience sing acceptance of His Law: Thus we turn from earthly raptures to the Face that's all

divine, Hoping, praying He will whisper: " Friend, thy wandering

heart is Mine."

EDWARD JMEs Sciausm.
