ack in the early days of Duluth thousands of
freemasons were active in the community at several lodges situated within Duluth. Today there are 6 lodges in Duluth under the Minnesota Grand Lodge and one under the Prince Hall Grand Lodge. The Lake Superior Lodge in Lakeside meets at 4711 Gladstone Street. The Lakeside site is one of three locations that lodges meet in Duluth. Four of the lodges meet at the downtown location on Lake Ave and 2nd St, and one meets in the West End. The Prince Hall Lodge members originally were all black members and used to meet at

more of it in Lakeside. Stay tuned for potentially some Bluegrass, folk music, and even Scandinavian music later in the

Where we live shapes us. There are people we know and people we have yet to meet. You can meet people and play a fun game coming up in June. Attend the Bunco Night on June 15 (see the announcement on the top of page 5) and other Lakeside events on the back page. I’m also hoping to put together a couple concerts this fall in Lakeside. Plenty of live music will go on this summer : Duluth Library has a Thursday night series, Chester Park’s Tuesday night series, Glensheen’s Wednesday night series, and more. Have a cool summer!

Thanks so much!
RIGHT HERE in Lakeside we
have opportunities to head outdoors in natural areas, watch a train go by, and stand beside the big beautiful Lake Superior (and jump in). I like to dive into a little history here and there and talk with people who are involved in different aspects of the community. Thanks to local masons for sharing their history. This summer I’m embarking on gathering video footage and research history on Superior and the history of Park Point. Both will be big projects but it will be fun to pull together pieces so that more people can get to know our local area.
Alternate parking schedule is in effect year-round. Shaded weeks indicate park on odd-
numbered addresses. Change sides
Sundays 4-8PM.
Wanted for the next issue: share tales of Lester Park’s early days and/or why you love Lester Park (park). Email [email protected]. Thanks!
The Lakeside Lester Park Community Club will hold
their annual meeting on Tuesday, June 23.

Thanks local gardeners! Does everyone know where these two signs are making street corner gar-dens in Lakeside. Stop and smell the flowers. You just might find birds and butterflies enjoying the

Chuck Bailey has lived in Lakeside for over 50 years and has been active in many civic endeavors. He is the father of six adult children, nine grand children and two great grand children. His father was a construction engineer and built defense plants at several locations during World War II, so Chuck has lived in Illinois, Iowa, California, Ohio, Florida and Wisconsin; before the family made its way to Duluth.
In time, his parents built a home at 3000 London Road, on a site which had once been an amusement
park and beer garden in the early history of Duluth. Chuck graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1955, enlisted in the army where he spent 16 months in Korea and a year at a NIKE anti-aircraft defense unit in Connecticut. He joined DM&IR Railroad in 1959 as a personnel

SHULDT specialist and worked there for 27 years; retiring as Director of Safety and Plant
Protection. For several years he was active in the Safety Section of the National Safety Council and the Association of
American Railroads. He chaired a 10 year national study which developed a new method for analyzing safety program effectiveness, and, following retirement, formed his own consulting business helping other companies analyze their safety programs.
He has published local history booklets, including one for the railroad and another for the 75th anniversary celebration of Lakeside Presbyterian Church where he attends.
He has served on the Junior Chamber of Commerce, and among other projects; helped build the soap box derby track at Hartley field to replace the race-course which was held for several years on London Road near 26th (near where the Lemon Drop Restaurant was located). Chuck was an organizer for the Portorama events and the parade that was held in Downtown
Duluth. He also designed and supervised construction of the Viking Ship parade float
that was eventually purchased by the fledgling Viking Football team and used as a bandstand in Bloomington Stadium for many years.
In 1967, Chuck was elected to a four year term on the Duluth Board of Education; where he served as treasurer, chaired the
bargaining committee, and served on the planning committee for the new Central High School.
He was a longtime member of the Gitche Cumee Kiwanis club - and involved in the many Club projects including the Pinewood Derby model car races for cub-scouts, annual dinners, and duck races.
His life-long avocation has been the study of ancient history. which has led to recording of petroglyphs in rock art sites and an organized mapping of ancient sites in Minnesota at Jeffers Petroglyphs, Blue Mounds, and the Lujenida dolman in the Boundary Waters.
A longtime member of the Northern Lakes Archeology Society, which meets monthly at the Superior Public Library; he has regularly hosted its annual holiday party pot-luck and has presented several programs for the organization.

St. Mark’s African Methodist Episcopal Church. Now this lodge also meets at the Lakeside location. Lake Superior lodge has about 150 members. In 1996 the TW Hugo (Hugo was a two time mayor of Duluth) Lodge merged with the Lakeside Lodge and formed the Lake Superior Lodge #349. Some members live in Lakeside and some come from around town or even Superior. The building on Gladstone in Lakeside was constructed in 1922. The upper floor has a blue room where lodge meetings convene. Additional meeting space, a library, and photo wall are on the main floor, and the lowest level has a kitchen and dining room. Roger Morris of Lakeside received his 50 year pin in November 2013 and was master in 1973. He and several other people in this lodge have the highest honor, 33rd degree, bestowed by the Scottish Rite and are knight templars. “I have met so many wonderful people that I wouldn’t have met had it not been for masonry. There is a strong feeling of trust. It’s like they are your brothers. We are there to help.” says Roger when asked about being a member.

YOUTH & SCHOOL NEWS
A Musical on Germs St. Michael's has a tradition of doing a spring musical that goes back at least 30 years. Any student (K-5) that wants to be in the show is able to perform. It is such a great way to get young kids involved in theater and gives them wonderful public speaking/performing skills.
The play Germ Trek-The Musical was performed by 30 students from Kindergarten through 5th grade in late April. The students practiced 2-3 times a week from February-April. The music from the show came from K-8 music
journal. The play was free and open to the public. The musical is a combination of Star Trek meets Health class 101. Three germs (measles, mumps, and rubella) try to enter a human body through Nasal Airways. The are detected by the "command center" (brain) of the body, the "bridge of the ship", which is controlled by Captain Burke and his crew.
The germs are transported through the body and continue to meet roadblocks such as the Anti-bodies. Throughout the show the students learned how various systems of the body work, how germs and viruses enter the body, and defense mechanisms to keep germs at bay. Thank you to Lynn Peterson for supplying photos and the summary.
Summer Sports Through the summer at Duluth East numerous sports camps go on: Girls Basketball, Boys Basketball, Volleyball, Boys & Girls Soccer, Football Camp, and Girls Tennis.

Successful Blood Drives Duluth East holds three blood drives per
year. This year 216 units (pints) of blood
were collected - up 35 from the previous
year. In our area about 25% of blood
donated comes from high school and college
age students. In Minnesota the minimum
age to donate is 16 and requires parent
permission. In Lakeside, the EPA lab also
regularly hosts blood drives. To find out
about donating blood contact Michele Keil at
