DearFriends,AnotherexcitingandeventfulyearhasunfoldedforRESPECT.ThefourthDOCTRIDInternationalConferencetookplaceatQueen’sUniversityinBelfastinApril.Itwasattendedby140delegatesfrom

theUSA,IrelandandmainlandEurope.TheDOCTRIDConferencegivesustheopportunitytohearandlearnfromworldwideexpertsintheirchosenfieldofassistivetechnologies,whichcanenhancethequalityoflifeforpeoplewithanintellectualdisabilityandautism.CongratulationstoProfBrianHarveyandProfMikeLeahyfortheirleadershipandcommitmenttoDOCTRID.

InSeptember,wewelcomedthefirstcohortofASSISTIDFellowstoStJoseph’sCentreinClonsilla.EightIncomingFellowswillconducttheirResearchinIrelandandfiveOutgoingFellowswillstudyatoneofthenonIrishUniversityPartners.ThroughDOCTRIDandtheEUMarieCurieASSISTIDprogramme,Irelandwillbecomeamajorinternationalhubforassistivetechnologyresearch.ThreenewHegartyFellowshipswereestablishedbyDOCTRIDinthenameofthelateSrMarthaHegartyandthesethreeresearchersarebasedatMichiganStateUniversityandwillalsobeattachedtoanIrishUniversityandwillspendtimewithintheDaughtersofCharityServices.

IampleasedtoreportthatrefurbishmentofthreeBungalowshascommencedatClonsilla.Thenewfurnishingsandequipmentbeinginstalledwillenhancethedailylifeoftheresidents.

Fundraisingisthekeytoalloureffortsandimpact.IwouldliketothankalloftheCommitteesandVolunteersfortheirdedicationandhardwork.RESPECT’sSummerLunch,theCharityBallandChristmasVarietyLunchallcontinuetobeverywellsupported,thankstothesuperbworkbytheorganisingcommitteesandtheirdedicatedandloyalsupporters.ThePeterLawrieGolfOutingisanannualhighlightinRESPECT’scalendarandweareverygratefultoPeterforhissupport.Abigthankyoutoeverybodywhocycled,walkedandranduringtheyearinaidofRESPECT.

Inparticular,the‘inaugural’GreenwayCycleandWalkinMayowasagreatsuccess.TheRESPECTShopinPrussiaStreethasbeenrefurbishedandI’msurethisnewlookwillattractevenmorecustomers.Thevolunteerswhooperatetheshopgivewonderfulservicetothelocalcommunity.

IwouldliketopersonallythankDanLenihanandAnthonyCollinswhoannouncedtheirretirementsduringtheyear.DanwasChairmanforover15yearsandAnthonyservedontheBoardforover20years.Iknowyouwilljoinmeinextendingourappreciationforeverythingtheyhavedone.NoelKidneywhoisontheBoardofRESPECThasbeenappointedChairman.

Theyear2015appearstohavepassedsoquickly,yetasIreflectonit,somanygreatthingshavehappenedforRESPECTandultimatelyforpeoplewithintellectualdisabilityandautism.Mydeepgratitudetoallofyouwhohavemadethispossible.

OurshopinPrussiaStreet,wastotallyrefurbishedandwasofficiallyre-openedbyDiarmuidConnollyand“Sam”inNovember.ThankYouDiarmuidforhelpingtomakeitsuchajoyfuloccasion.Thefeedbackfromcustomersandvolunteershasbeenextremelypositive.AspecialthankyoutoCatrionaGleeson,KarenDoyle,NoelKidney,DominicSargent,StephenDunne,staff,volunteersandmanyotherpeoplewhohavehelpedtomakethispossible.

TheDOCTRIDIVInternationalconferencewashostedbyQueensUniversityBelfastinApril,wheremanyacademicsandserviceprovidersgathered,sharedandlistenedtoeachotherinordertofindnewwaysthroughtechnologytofurtherenhancethequalityoflifeforpeoplewithintellectualdisabilityandautismandhelpthemtoreachtheirfullpotential.InSeptemberwewelcomedournewASSISTIDresearchfellowsandwishthemwellintheirvariousareasofresearchintoassistivetechnologyandlookforwardtomanynewinitiativesanddevelopmentstosupportpeoplewithIDandautism.Wealsolookforwardtowelcomingourthree“HegartyFellows”fromMichiganStateUniversity,inearly2016.

Refurbishmenthascommencedonthe“CaraResidentialCentre”projectatStJoseph’s,Clonsilla,andtheresidentsarekeepingacloseeyeonitsprogressandwaitingeagerlytoreturntotheirnewre-vampedhomes.

DanLenihanresignedaschairpersonandalsoasamemberofthefundraisingboardduringthepastyear.IwouldliketoexpressourdeepgratitudetoDanforhisexpertise,supportandguidingthefundraisingboardinsomebuildingprojectsovermanyyearsandalwayskeepinginmindthepeopleintheservice.AnthonyCollinsalsoretiredfromthefundraisingboardthisyear.WethankhimforhismanyyearsofgenerousserviceandcommitmenttoRESPECT.

2015beganwithplanningourstrategyforraisingfundsovertheperiodto2020.ThesefundswillenableustocontinueoursupportfortheDaughtersofCharityDisabilitySupportServicesandtheDOCTRIDInstituteprovidingmatchingfundingfortheEUMarieCuriegrantfortheASSISTIDproject.Overtheyearwesawhowthehardwork,talentsandcommitmentoftheRESPECTteamatClonsillacontributedinnosmallwaytooursuccessinimplementingthisstrategy.

TheappointmentbyDOCTRIDofthefirstgroupofASSISTIDFellowshipsbroughthometousallthepotentialofassistivetechnologyintheworldofintellectualdisabilityandautismandwe

hopetofocusonthisinthecomingyear.DuringtheyearAnthonyCollinssteppeddownfromtheFundraisingBoardaftermanyyearsof

TheDOCTRIDResearchInstitute(www.doctrid.ie)wasestablishedbytheDaughtersofCharitythroughit’sfoundationRESPECTasaninternationalnetworkofuniversities,DoCDisabilitySupportServicesandindividualswithamissiontoimprovethelivesofpeoplewithIntellectualDisability(ID)orAutismSpectrumDisorder(ASD)throughevidence-basedresearchandtechnologies.DOCTRIDsupportsempiricalresearchprogrammesacrossdifferentsectorsincludingassistivetechnologies(www.assisitd.eu),ethics,behaviouralandsocialsciencestoenhancetheCareandServicedeliveryfortheindividualandenrichtheirlivesineducation,employmentandindependentliving.

Thelatterhalfof2015sawanexpansionoftheDOCTRIDresearchprogrammesthroughtheappointmentofthreenewSrMarthaHegartyFellowsandthirteenMarieCurieASSISTIDFellows.TheHegartyFellows,Drs.Hyun-JuKang,RebeccaIrvineandNicoleNeilwilldividetheirtwoyearresearchappointmentsbetweenMichiganStateUniversityandanIrishhostuniversity.ThehostuniversitiesforthisgroupofFellowsinclude:NUIG,TCDandQueensUniversity.TheirprojectswillalsoinvolveserviceusersandstaffattheDoCandarefocusedintheareasofemploymentoutcomes,policy,accessibility,self-advocacyandbehaviouralinterventions.SomeoftheASSISTIDprojectsincludeincreasingindependenceofindividualswithIDorASDusingsmartphones,virtuallearningandemploymenttraining,interactivetoysandcomputerizedspeechdevelopment.Aspecialfocusisbeingplacedontheethicsandpolicyofassistivetechnologyanditsroleinsocialinclusion.

DearFriendsThishasbeenaparticularlybusyyearfortheDaughtersofCharityDisabilitySupportServicesasweprepareforregistrationinspectionsofourresidentialfacilitiesbytheregulatorybodyHIQA.TheServicemanages75designatedcentresacrossthreeregionsinDublin,LimerickandNorthTipperary.

Todate23centreshavebeenregisteredandwelookforwardtotheremainderbeingregisteredintheNewYear.Needlesstosaytheregulatorisparticularlycriticalofsubstandardfacilities,andtheServiceisgratefulforthecontributionwhichRESPECThasmadetoassisttheServiceinrefurbishingsomeofourresidentialaccommodationoverthelastnumberofyears.WearedelightedthatRESPECThaveagreedtosupportourmostrecentrefurbishmentproject,CaraResidentialCentreatSt.Joseph’sinClonsilla.Workhasalreadystartedonthisandresidentsarelookingforwardtomovingintotheirrevampedbungalowsinthenewyear.

IamdelightedtoseethatRESPECT’sinvolvementinresearchcontinuesthroughDOCTRIDandtheappointmentoftheresearchfellowsisagreatachievement.TheresearchproposalsareveryinterestingandIamsuretheywillcontributegreatlytoouroverallunderstandingandcapacitytosupportpeoplewithintellectualdisability.
