COLLABORATIONS AND LINKAGES

1. Negotiated for collaboration with Colgate –Palmolive for research fund of over Ksh 5

million.MoU signed by the Vice-Chancellor in 2018. The first and second phase of the

research is completed. The third phase will be in January. The project has imparted

skills on undergraduate student who were involved in planning and execution of the

research in Kangundo and Matungulu sub-counties, Machakos county.

2. Negotiated a collaboration with the University of Columbia. The MOU was signed by the

Vice-Chancellor in 2014. This involves staff exchange and joint application of funds. The

two Universities organized a regional oral Summit and training in telemedicine for

student and staff in the School.

3. Negotiated collaboration with the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF). The MoU

was signed by the Vice-Chancellor in 2014. Currently the NHIF pays for patients seeking

treatment in the School including the Dental plaza. I requested for the Dental hospital to

be put under category A with other government institution so as to benefit from their

support and increase capitation to the school. The plans are underway.

4. Negotiated collaboration with Wrigleys EA limited and the Ministry of Health for the

funding of the first ever National Oral Health Survey at a cost of over Ksh 3 million.

.MOU signed by the Vice-Chancellor in 2014. The survey generated information for

future planning and policy development in the area of oral health. Currently the school is

involved in development of the second Oral Health Policy.

5. Negotiated collaboration with global bridges for the funding of tobacco cessation. This

lead to the training of all Dental student in the University of Nairobi, Moi university, all

Community Oral Health students at the Kenya Medical training and Several Oral Health

care Providers on Tobacco cessation. The school runs a tobacco cessation clinic and

other clinics in the country are involved in tobacco cessation.

6. Negotiated collaboration with Intra-Acp mobility training in African Universities (P4HPT).

7. Facilitated student exchange with the University of Ghana, with four (4) of their students

undertaking elective training at the school in 2016. Other University worldwide have also

sent student for remedial and elective training in the school.

ACHIEVEMENT AS DEAN SCHOOL OF DENTAL SCIENCES (JANUARY 2013-JANAURY 2017) As the Dean of the School lead the team that was involved in the

Accreditation of the school of Dental Sciences by the East African Medical and Dental

council.

Some other achievements

Increase module II fee collection from 7 million to 23 million. This was through increased

in number of student’s enrollment and efficiency in fee collection.

Launch of the school of Dental Sciences Journal (Journal of African oral health Scinces-

2015). This is a peer reviewed dental journal currently supported by Colgate Palmolive

Tiling and painting of ground floor, and repair of oral diagnosis clinic by Wrigley’s EA

limited

Painting of first floor, branding of the Peadiatric clinic to make it child friendly and

branding of Periodontology clinic with oral health messages for patients by GSK

Placement of a Blue CADCAM machine by Sirona company. staff and students were

also trained on the use of the new technology. The machine will be used to fabricate

crown and bridge for implant dentistry and other procidures using computers. The will

reduce the time taken since the patient can have the crown done in one visit and level of

accuracy for the crown improved.

Donation a dispenser for dental materials by 3M. The machines ensure efficiency of

mixing of material and cuts the amount of material used by half.

Lead the school to join the expertise dental program. The program involves donation of

free dental impression materials (filtek Z250 XT, single bond universal and impregum)

equal to the number of final year student equivalent to the amount of material purchase.

This lead to reduction in the amount of money spent in purchase of impression materials

in the school.

Painting of the outside school with income from the school. Purchased the gutters and

committed money for the work. Once this is completed, the physical outlook of the

school improved.

Tiling of the first floor using funds from TUPAC project.

Improved the level of cleanliness. This lead to improved level of cross infection control

and work environment.

Computerization of cash office. This meant more efficiency.

Development of program for computerization of the medical records. The phase one is

complete and ready for implementation.

Donation of full megagen surgical kit and two fixtures for implant by Eurodent Kenya at a

cost of Ksh 340,000.00 handpiece at a cost of Ksh 22,000.00 and two (2) phantom

heads at a cost of Ksh 240,000.00 by Eurodent . The company through Sirona has

promised to donate an OPG machine.

Purchase of a photocopier at Ksh 299,000.00 and three electrical projection screen for

lecture theater 1,2and 3 from income generated in the school

Purchase of security equipments from income generated in the school

.Received a donation of equipment and teaching materials worth over 5million and a

mobile dental unit for use in the outreach program worth Ksh 200,000.00 from

Vocational training team, through smile Kenya.

The school was involved in Smile Kenya and oral health program whose aim is to screen

60,000 people per year. This is in collaboration with Colgate Palmolive and the

screening started last year. This has assist the community outreach since the screening

in based on the outreach teaching model for the school.

Organized and supported several continuous professional Development forums in the

school funded by various companies.

Donation of books for palliative care by Kenya Hospice Palliative Care Association

Purchase and commissioning of eight (8) dental units for the Periodontology clinic at a

cost of Ksh 17 million from the University of Nairobi.

Purchase of stationary worth over Ksh 600 000 in 2018 for the school using intra-Acp

project funds

Currently in the process of purchasing a pump for the school at Ksh 620,000 and a

laptop at 393,000. The AIE has already been committed from intra Acp-Project. There is

Donation of 1500 dental instruments by St Andrews Church at a cost of Ksh 1 500

000.00 for use by the students.

o Support of outreach program: GSK- Ksh750,000.00 per year for 3 years, Wrigleys-550,

000 per year for four years and Colgate Palmolive support for student outreach program

o Donation of two implant kits at a cost of Ksh. 520,000.00 by KOS for use in training of

student in implantology.

o Purchased a implant kit at a cost of Ksh 450 000.00 from income generated in the

Acquisition of additional teaching facilities

Facilitated the Donation of 18 dental units by the University of New York at a cost of Ksh

18 million.

Financial achievement As a chairman my aim was to achieve sustainability of the department which I achieved by

putting in place checks and balances which lead to the department being self sustaining thus

running without request for support. The department and a surplus of 1.74 million from having

debts when i took over. This was duplicated during my time as the Dean; I was able to

undertake several repairs and purchase of equipment using money generated in the school.

The school is able to pay casuals and for cleaning materials and services.

University and one in Stellenbosch. The University through the school of Dental

Sciences has received four students and three potential students whose scholarships

are being processed reported for Masters in Dental Surgery in September. This will build

capacity in the region and Africa at large

Negotiated for scholarship for one of the tutorial fellow (Dr Peter Okong,o) through the

Ministry of Education to study Orthodontics in China. The school has only two

orthodontists and his return will improve the capacity for the department.

Negotiated University of Nairobi scholarship for Dr Opondo who is currently studying

Dental Radiology in South Africa and Dr Simiyu is studying endodontics in Philippines.

Other achievement

Negotiated for the introduction of internship program at the school of Dental Sciences.

Currently the Ministry of Health sends 7-10 interns per year to the school. This has

improved the image of the school since the patients are not turned away and improved

efficiency.

2013-2015 Team member, Kenya Smiles Project; A health education and awareness

creation project that brought together the Rotary club of Kenya, District 5160

Rotary clubs of California, USA, Ministry of Health – Kenya, University of Nairobi

and the Kenya Dental Association. A total of 10,000 children were reached. As a

result, the Dental School benefited from donations of dental materials, equipment

for dental outreach and oral health education materials valued at approximately

USD 52,130, with cash donations to cater for Dental Treatment of slum children

and 4 undergraduate scholarships worth USD 4,585. This led to establishment of

linkages with the University of California, San Francisco, Berkeley, Arthur Dugoni

School of the University of Pacific, and the Alliance for Oral Health Across

Borders.

partnership with Private sector through sponsorship by Unilever. As a result, oral

health agenda has gained momentum and is being considered key by many

stakeholders.
