GENEALOGIST

Once I was a normal person Before I climbed my family tree,

Now my forbears are acquainted They make a battleground of me.

My Great-grandpa Pat from Ireland Makes me dance with happy feet, Btlt my English one, Lord Ogley, Walks sedately down the street. Then my Swedish Grandma, Olga,

Gives away each cent I make, While my Scottish Grandma Shudders,

At the things I waste and break. My Great-grandma from Paris Laughs and flirts the livelong day, But my Great-grandma from Plymouth Turns my head the other way. Thus they differ, thus they argue,

How I wish they would agree For I never can determine

Which of them is really me.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Dear Members:

We have just celebrated our 2nd Anniversary. We started two years ago with only ten members. We now have over 100 members throughout the United States. I am proud and delighted of our great success. We also have achieved many of the goals I had dreamed of. We had two successful workshops and made money so we could purchase books. These books have been a great help to so many of our members. We have published a quarterly newsletter. Through this our members have also acquired data taking them back another generation or so. We are getting a good file on family data, bible records, cemetery records. We hope this will continue. Any reader of this who has any type of record they would like to donate we will be delighted to have a copy.

Everyone working as they have I feel we will continue to grow to even greater goals. Our programs have been very good. Speakers on different genealogy interest helps all of us in our research. We accept any suggestions on speakers you would like to have or other data. We are always open for any type of help. This is your Society as well as mine. Please feel free at any time to let us know what you would like.

Thanks to each and everyone that has made this a successful two years. I hope to continue helping as many people as possible. Maybe this time next year we will have 200 members. Let everyone know we would like to have them become a member. Keep up the good work you have done and this will happen.

Yours,

c~~~ President

NEW HOPE PRIMITIVE BAPTIST CHURCH OF PREDESTINATION

New Hope is one of the first churches established in Simpson

County, Kentucky. Little is known of its history and only a few

people know it ever existed. The chimney, made of native stone

and handmade brick burned from native clay, still stands in 1979

along with part of the original building which was turned into a

dwelling long ago. Most of the markers in the nearby chu~ch ceme

tery are of native stone, unma~ked !and broken or destroyed by van

dals, cattle, and farm machinery. A few remain to identify the

churchyard cemetery and neighbors who worshiped there nearly two

centuries ago.

The little church stood on top of a hill overlooking the junc

tion of Howard's Branch, Chaney Branch, and Drakes Creek about one

half mile north of the Kentucky-Tennessee line, approximately two

miles west of Rapids, formerly Palmyra, Simpson County, KY.

The Rev. Samuel Hinton, founder of New Hope, donated the land

and with the help of neighbors built the church so that they would

have a place for worship outside their homes. He came to Kentucky

as a young man with his father's family from Rockingham County,

North Carolina. Jesse Hinton, the father, bought a land patent for

two hundred acres in Warren Co., KY. on the waters of Orakes Creek

26 January 1807.

5

Some of the early worshipers were: Jesse Hinton and wife,Eliz

abeth Hendricks; Abram Hendricks and wife, Charlotte Hinton; Al

bert Hendricks and wife, Margaret Barnette; Conrad Strader and wife,

Edwards family and other pioneer families of Warren, Iiow Simpson

County.

There were rough natural stones marking many other graves in an or

derly manner. Many had been distrubed by time and livestock. Rev.

Samuel Hinton died in Simpson Co. KY and is buried in the old church

yard cemetery at New Hope. Rebecca Hendricks, his wife, outlived him

and is buried at Hudley Cemetery, Thompson Station, Williamsburg Co.,

Tenn. Her daughter Nancy and George W. Garrett were there about 1880

(Records of Mrs. Belva Thomas Hadley). Jesse Hinton was born in !lock-

marked graves. Their stones have been d~atroyed by time.

Only one stone was standing, William Plummer, when the cemetery

was visited by Paul Garrett and Eugene Roberts on Oct. 11, 1979, over

a century and a half after its establishment. Both men are descendants

of the Hinton, Hendricks, and Garrett families.

In 1906 the property was deeded to J.P. Wheeler. The deed

stated that the land was donated by Sam Hinton for the establishment

of New Hope Primitive Baptist Church and that records were turned

over to State Line Primitive Baptist Church. Signed by Benjamin J.

Hinton. Abstract deed of J.P. Wheeler.

Paul Garrett has the following receipt:

" $10.00 Recive of Thomas Brizendine for the purpose of paying for the State Line Church for the old Baptis church at New Hope Simpson Co. KY this 11 day of Sep 1906

B. F. Hinton, clerk"

This old church cemetery, like much of our heritage, has yielded

to the ravages of time, nature, and modern machinery •
