The Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce was incorporated in May 1958 and has 300 members. The Chamber strives to make Longboat Key, Lido Key and St. Armands Key great places to do business while respecting the residential character of the keys. Tourism is the Chamber’s main business,
and besides being the information center of the islands and providing networking opportunities for its members, the Chamber seeks ways to sup-port the community. The Chamber welcomes you to these island paradises.
Enjoy your stay and please return to visit or live.

The Town of Longboat Key turned 58 on Nov. 13, 2013. But the island of Longboat Key has a rich history that predates the formation of the town.
Longboat Key has been a tourist destination for hundreds — if not thousands — of years. Its earliest tourists were Calusa and Timucan Indians who lived on the mainland east of the island but traveled to the island to enjoy many of the same at-tractions that visitors treasure today: the beaches and bountiful seafood harvest.
Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto led an expedition in 1538 to Florida in search of gold. His scout and treasurer, Juan Anasco, explored the area and is said to be the first white man to set foot on Longboat Key.
It wasn’t until the late 1800s that Longboat Key got its first permanent residents. In 1888, Thomas Mann, a Confederate soldier and carpen-ter by trade, moved his family to a thatched hut he built somewhere on the north end of the Key. In 1891, Mann was awarded 144.47 acres in what is now the Longbeach Village neighborhood, as part of the Home-stead Act of 1862.
Communities developed in the early 1900s at the north end of the island and mid-Key, where an
agricultural community of approxi-mately 18 families flourished.
The Mistletoe steamship trans-ported visitors between the island and the mainland and also shipped produce from farmer Byron Corey’s dock, known as Corey’s Land-ing. A hurricane in October 1921 destroyed island farming activity and most existing homes. But a storm could not wipe out island life. Throughout the next 30 years, fami-lies continued to move to Longboat Key, and on Nov. 13, 1955, residents voted 186-13 to incorporate as a town.
Arvida Corp. changed the course of the island’s history in 1959, when it bought waterfront property on the south end of Longboat and its surrounding keys for $13.5 million. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the company developed plans for condominiums and golf courses that would give the Key its current character today.
Today, Longboat Key is home to a year-round population of 7,000 and draws as many as 22,000 at the peak of season, usually considered to be Easter weekend. Just like Longboat Key’s original tourists, residents and visitors alike enjoy the beaches and weather — but today’s islanders also cherish the many recreational and cultural amenities, along with shops and restaurants located both on and off the island.
Centuries after Calusa and Timucan Indians became Longboat Key’s earliest tourists, the island remains a tourist destination. Need proof? Longboat Key was voted the No. 2 North American island travel destination in the Condé Nast Trav-eler 2010 Readers’ Choice Survey. But Longboaters who enjoy warm weather, pristine beaches and many local offerings did not need a survey to tell them that their beloved island is a top-notch destination.
Longboat Key PICTURE OF PARADISE
■ Longboat Key is most likely named for the longboats that Spaniards used once they reached landfall. According to local legend, explorer Juan Anasco believed the Indians were hostile when he and his companions reached land on the island and fled, leaving their longboat in the bayou.
■ The pirate Jean La Fitte was shipwrecked in 1821 on or near Longboat Key for several months.
■ Longboat Key has not been hit directly by a hurricane since 1947.
■ President George W. Bush stayed on Longboat Key on Sept. 10, 2001, the night before the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Longboat Key offers a pletho-ra of outdoor activities — from biking, rollerblading and even recumbent biking up and down Gulf of Mexico Drive to a variety of watersports performed on our turquoise waters of Sarasota Bay and Gulf of Mexico.
Sarasota Sailing Squadron an-chors the Key to the south in the area known as City Island. Drive past Mote Marine Aquarium all the way to the water's edge and you will be greeted with a line of sailboats, along with an unfor-gettable view of the downtown Sarasota skyline. The squadron grew out of the youth sailing program at Sarasota Yacht Club in the late 1930s, but was disbanded during World War II. It was reorganized under the auspices of the YMCA in 1946 and obtained its own charter in 1947. Today, more than 800 families sail at the squadron, which is open seven days a week. Not only does the facility host many regattas a year, including the Labor Day Regatta, it also allows visiting sailors to dock for $20 a night during non-regatta days.
The squadron is also the launch site for a different kind of race, the Sarasota SUP race series. SUP stands for stand-up paddleboarding, which requires only a longboard, a paddle and a healthy dose of balance. Some SUP yoga teachers lead yogis-turned-water-sports-lovers in gentle moves while balancing on a SUP board in the waters off Longboat or Lido keys.
Other outdoor activities for the area include kayaking through the mangroves, yoga on the beach, tennis, golf, boating and fishing. Call the Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce at 941-383-2466 for details.

The Paleo and Calusa Indians lived on Lido Key and the surrounding lands for 4,000 years, and archaeolog-ical evidence suggests they worshiped the sun. The Indians left the barrier island after Spanish explorers came in search of gold in the 1500s. Then, for more than three centuries, the barrier island was largely uninhabited.
But John Ringling took an interest in Lido Key in the 1920s. Hoping to inspire Warren G. Harding, who was president at the time, to buy a winter home on nearby Bird Key, Ringling named the streets on Lido Key after American presidents.
In 1940, the city of Sarasota opened the Lido Casino with funding from the Works Progress Administra-tion, the largest New Deal agency, to attract tourists and provide jobs. The casino was a popular attraction in
the 1940s and 1950s. Tourists often lined up to have their pictures taken
with the large seahorse sculptures that were attached to the building. The casino was demolished in 1969, and, today, the Lido Beach Pavilion stands in its place.
Lido Key was among the barrier islands Arvida purchased for $13.5 million in 1958. But the public protested in 1967, when Arvida proposed enlarging part of Lido Key, as it had Bird Key. As a compromise, Arvida sold Sarasota County the northern and southern tips to use as county parks.
Today, Lido Key, is home to a renowned white sand beach that was renourished in 2009, along with hotels and motels and a population of about 2,500 full- and part-time residents — who, like the island’s earliest residents, no doubt also wor-ship the sun.
Two molds of the original seahorse sculptures from the Lido Beach Casino now stand at Mote Marine Aquarium, where they were moved in 2009 after spending decades in storage.

St. Armands Key is named for Frenchman Charles St. Amand — and, yes, that is a misspelling. St. Amand bought a total 131.89 acres of land on the key in 1893 for just $21.71, but his name was misspelled in the original deeds. St. Amand and other pioneers fished in the surrounding waters and grew produce, shipping it to the mainland.
He sold the land for $1,500 in 1894 to Augus Mc-Innes. The land was resold several times before 1917, when John Ringling bought St. Armands Key, envisioning a high-end shopping des-tination. In 1925, Ringling began work on a causeway
that would join St. Armands Key to the mainland and used circus elephants to haul materials.
Real-estate sales topped $1 million in one day in 1926, when sales of the John Ringling Estates launched. But most transactions were made with minimal depos-its, which were forfeited or returned after the stock market crash of 1929 and subsequent Great Depres-sion. Ringling donated the causeway to the city of Sara-sota, because he was unable to maintain it. For the next 20 years, St. Armands Key sat virtually empty, with vegetation growing over what was once the Circle.
But in the 1940s and 1950s, businesses began to return to the Circle. By the 1960s, the Circle had a reputa-tion as a premier shopping destination that it maintains today with more than 130 businesses.
Approximately 750 resi-dents live on St. Armands Key, many of whom are members of the St. Armands Key Residents Association, which was founded in 1951. Recently, residents and merchants worked together to restore Ringling’s his-toric statues that are found throughout St. Armands Key. They symbolize Ring-ling’s vision for St. Armands and for Sarasota.
ST. ARMANDS CIRCLEJohn Ringling imagined St. Armands
Key as the jewel of Sarasota when he purchased it in 1917. The circus tycoon envisioned residential and shopping units that would take the form of a circle. He worked to bring the vision to fruition in the 1920s, but the stock market crash of 1929 temporarily halted Ringling’s dream.
St. Armands Circle sat empty until the 1940s and 1950s, when businesses began to fill up the shopping district.
Today, the shopping district is the jewel that Ringling once imagined; it draws shoppers and diners from around the world.
It is home to 130 businesses, includ-ing boutiques, shops, restaurants, galleries, salons and more.
If you’re in the mood to shop, you’ll find high-end men’s and women’s fash-ion and accessories, jewelry, one-of-a-kind art, décor and gift items, antiques and a variety of specialty selections.
The Circle is an ideal place for a day trip: After shopping, get pampered with a massage, hair appointment or manicure. Finish the day with din-ner or cocktails at the Circle’s many restaurants.
You will still find reminders of Ring-ling throughout the Circle. Ringling’s historic statues, along with newer statues that include the “Seven Virtues
of Sarasota” are located throughout the Circle and St. Armands Key. The Circus Ring of Fame in St. Armands Circle Park als honors Sarasota’s circus tradition. It is like the Hollywood Walk of Fame for circus performers and contributors; each year the Circus Ring of Fame Foundation inducts new members.
The majority of stores are open by 10 a.m. Monday through Saturday, and all stores are open by noon Sundays. Most stores stay open until 8 or 9 p.m.
Breakfast restaurants are open by 7 a.m. seven days a week, and other restaurants are open 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. seven days a week.
The Circle is also home to many can’t-miss events, such as Mardi Gras, Halloween "Fright Night on St. Armands” and Holiday Night on St. Armands.

KEN THOMPSON PARK/ CITY ISLAND1700 Ken Thompson Parkway, Sarasota, FL
This 84-acre park truly has some-thing for everyone. Its amenities in-clude three boat ramps, fishing piers, a playground, a recreation area and benches and picnic tables for those who want to enjoy the unrivaled view of the Sarasota skyline.
The park is home to the Sara-sota Sailing Squadron, which was established in the late 1930s and now is home to 800 member families who take advantage of the organization's many sailing programs; Save Our Seabirds, a nonprofit facility devoted to caring for and treating ailments of the island's many varieties of birds; and Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium, founded in 1955, which is home to a massive aquarium featur-ing dolphins, manatees, sea turtles, seahorses and more, along with interactive exhibits such as a stingray petting area, classes and educational opportunities and excursions such as Eco-Boat tours around the bay.
QUICK POINT NATURE PRESERVE100 Gulf of Mexico Drive, Longboat Key, FL
Quick Point, originally called The Hook, encompasses 34 acres on the island’s south end. The Town of Long-boat Key acquired the land in 1985 from Arvida Corp., which developed much of the Key in the 1970s and 1980s. The preserve offers paths that wind around lagoons, mangroves and other native plant species and even features an osprey nesting pole. Florida’s natural beauty has been preserved in this tranquil setting.
BICENTENNIAL PARK2730 Gulf of Mexico Drive, Longboat Key, FL
Nestled near Longboat Key Town Hall sits a one-acre park that is known as a place to refresh and reflect. The partly shaded park, dedicated to the town July 4, 1976, sits just off the bike path and offers active persons a place to pause with benches beneath a canopy of trees and a relaxing view of the butterfly garden created by
LONGBOAT KEY AND LIDO KEY PARKS
the Longboat Key Garden Club. The park is recognized as a Florida Model Garden by the state for its low main-tenance and eco-friendliness.
BAYFRONT PARK AND RECREATION CENTER4052 Gulf of Mexico Drive, Longboat Key, FL
The Bayfront Park Recreation Center is currently home to a large rec center that houses not only fitness classes and bridge games but serves as a community gathering spot. Behind the main building lies a baseball field, tennis courts and even a basketball court and shuffleboard court.
JOAN M. DURANTE PARK5550 Gulf of Mexico Drive, Longboat Key, FL
This 32-acre park is certainly a rarity on the Key. One of the few remaining vacant properties on the island, it is the
result of a private/public partnership to restore the land as a viable wetland and coastal hammock forest. Key resident James Durante established the park in 1993 in honor of his late wife.
The town of Longboat Key maintains the park’s lush vegetation year-round, and the property includes a pavilion, children’s playground, a lake and bicycle and boardwalk paths around the entire property.
NORTH LIDO BEACH PARK400 Benjamin Franklin Drive, Sarasota, FL
North Lido Beach Park is a good spot for swimming and fishing and also features nature trails. The natural beach and dune system make it a popular place for birdwatching. The park is also an important sea turtle nesting site.
SOUTH LIDO PARK2201 Benjamin Franklin Drive, Sarasota, FL
Tucked away at the end of Benjamin Franklin Drive, South Lido Park is a go-to spot for nature enthusiasts. The 100-acre park offers a panoramic view of downtown Sarasota and the Gulf of Mexico. Its amenities include a picnic area, canoe and kayak launch, fishing, jogging/walking trails, a playground, observation tower and decks and more.

OVERLOOK PARK: Drive north on New Pass Bridge and make a sharp left before the Chart House restaurant and you’ll see Marker No. 1, located at the site where John Ringling began to build his Ritz-Carlton Hotel in 1926. Ringling never completed the hotel, which became known as the “Ghost Hotel,” that stood empty for nearly 40 years.
2162 GULF OF MEXICO DRIVE: Before Longboat Key became a vacation paradise, the island was home to a small vibrant farming community. In the early 1900s, near where Marker No. 2 stands today, approximately 18 families grew a variety of fruits and shipped them from Key pioneer and farmer Byron Corey’s dock. Farming came to an end after an October 1921 hurricane.
3960 GULF OF MEXICO DRIVE: On a sunny day, you are practically guaranteed to see boaters enjoying the crystal clear waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Marker No. 3 details the historic role of boats on the island. Timucan and Calusa Indians came by canoe to the Key, and during the 1500s, Spanish ships were common sights. In 1539, Hernando De Soto landed just north of the Key on the Manatee River with 600 men.
4250 GULF OF MEXICO: Today, Longboat Key’s beaches are serene. But as Marker No. 4 describes, that was not the case during World War
II. Fighter pilots assigned to the 717th base unit at Sarasota Army Airfield skimmed across Sarasota Bay for training exercises, shooting at silhouettes of German tanks.
4800 GULF OF MEXICO DRIVE: Today’s residents and visitors plan their schedules around the plethora of fun-filled area events. But during World War II, residents planned their schedules around the military drills that resulted in a mid-Key portion of Gulf of Mexico Drive being blocked off, as described on Marker No. 5.
OPPOSITE 631 BROADWAY IN THE LONGBEACH VILLAGE: In 1888, Civil War veteran Thomas Mann became Longboat Key’s first permanent resident when he built a thatched hut somewhere in what is now the Village, where Marker No. 6 is located. Later, around 1915, nearly a dozen homes were built throughout the Village using a distinctive concrete mix that al-lows the majority to survive today, although many have undergone major alterations.
FURTHER DOWN BROADWAY, NORTH OF THE PRESENT DOCK: Before the 1921 hurricane, a town dock stood near the location where Marker No. 7 stands today. Large ships transported tourists and fishing parties to the dock from Tampa and then continued on to Corey’s dock to carry vegetables to mainland Sarasota.
HISTORIC HOTSPOTSLongboat Key became a town in 1955, but the island’s history goes back much further. In the early 1990s, the town teamed up with the Longboat Key Historical Society to create seven markers that detail Key history. So, get on your bicycle, strap on your rollerblades or hop in your car and take a trip back in time.
Before the 1921 hurricane, a town dock stood near where Marker No. 7 stands today. This dock is located to the south of the original dock.

Something happens when you drive into this neighborhood. As soon as you turn onto Broadway off of Gulf of Mexico Drive, your foot automatically switches to the brake pedal to be in accordance with the feeling this area radiates.
Although a slower, dream-like pace of life is evident, this is a dream sequence where anything can hap-pen. On any given day, a peacock could stroll by or your neighbor could throw the bash-of-the-century that people are still talking about years later.
Tucked away on the north end of Longboat Key lies historic Longbeach Village. Known in its earliest days as a transient fishing village, the neighborhood is now drawing more year-round residents.
The draw seems to be not only its historical links to the Key and Florida but also its ability to be dynamic. Houses dating to the 1920s are inter-mingled with new, more contempo-rary constructions.
Driving down Broadway, the main “strip” of the neighborhood, one can
see the water and docks waiting at the other end. Circling around on Bay Drive, you can drive past the local kayaker or fisherman docking for the day — or bringing in his fresh catch. Across the street, the Gulf of Mexico laps onto Whitney Beach.
HISTORYFifty people were present at the
first meeting of The Village Civic Association May 7, 1986. And those 50 people decided on their name, Longbeach Village Association, based on the old village of Longbeach’s
post office, which stood within the confines of their neighborhood.
To date, there are about 175 registered members of The Village Association, and not all of these members actually live in The Village. Anyone who has an interest is invited to join.
With regular potluck dinners and social, holiday-themed parties, this group both lives and socializes together.
The residents also take advan-tage of each other’s talents and have formed conversational French groups, a play group for dogs and regular softball games.
Still, keeping to oneself is not difficult, with places to retreat to such as the beach or the Longboat Key Center for the Arts, a Division of Ringling College of Art and Design.
COLORFUL MENAGERIEThe animals that are in abundance
in this neighborhood can certainly not be forgotten: ibis, wild parrots, tortoises and egrets. And then, of course, there are the peacocks,
whose beginnings are a mystery. There is lore of the peacocks being gifts from a few town commission-ers, yet there is also the version that they were freed from cages and made their way to The Village. Either way, over the years they have mul-tiplied into a flock whose members love to flaunt their colorful plumage up and down the streets. And one thing is for certain — the peackcocks are never shy when it comes to photo opportunities.

VISITOR INFORMATION
WEATHERLongboat Key’s average temperature is 83 degrees. Its average yearly rainfall is 53 inches.
LOCATIONLongboat Key is a 10.8-mile barrier
island in Southwest Florida. On the east, the Key encloses the western boundary of Sarasota Bay, and it is bordered to the west by the Gulf of Mexico. The island’s white-sand beaches draw thousands of tourists and year-round residents each year. And the dense mangroves on its eastern border are an active spot for kayakers and boat-ers to spot wildlife such as dolphins and manatees.
Longboat is separated from neighbor-ing islands by deep water passes from the Gulf to Sarasota Bay. On the north end, Longboat Pass Bridge connects the Key to Bradenton Beach; on the south end, New Pass Bridge connects Longboat Key to St. Armands Key.
St. Armands Key, 83.6 acres in size, and Lido Key, 530 acres total, lie to the south of Longboat Key and are located west of Sarasota. Lido Key is bordered by Sarasota Bay on the east and west, and St. Armands Key is surrounded by Lido Key to the west and Sarasota Bay to the east.
TRANSPORTATIONLongboat Key’s primary transportation
element is Gulf of Mexico Drive (S.R. 789), which is a two-lane state highway that runs the length of the Key from the north to south. All other roads are town-owned, two-lane roads that connect to Gulf of Mexico Drive.
St. Armands Key’s main transportation element is S.R. 789, which takes you around St. Armands Circle and into Sarasota.
Lido Key’s primary transportation ele-ment is Benjamin Franklin Drive, which is west of Boulevard of the Presidents on St. Armands Circle.
The Intracoastal Waterway runs through Sarasota Bay and is accessible from Longboat from both the Gulf passes and numerous channels from the island’s bayside.
The Sarasota County Area Transit and Manatee County Area Transit systems offer a bus/trolley service that has stops all along the island.
Sarasota Bradenton International Airport, 6000 Airport Circle, is located east of Tamiami Trail, in Sarasota, on the Manatee/Sarasota county line, and is a convenient 30 minutes from Longboat Key. Visit www.srq-airport.com or call 941-359-5200 for more information.

LONGBOAT KEY CENTER FOR THE ARTS
Longboat Key draws people for its beautiful weather and equally capti-vating beaches, but one of the true jewels of the Key lies in its Arts Center. Nestled in the historic Longbeach Village neighborhood, the Longboat Key Center for the Arts, a Division of Ringling College of Art and Design, is a mecca for creative minds and artists and art-lovers alike.
The Arts Center was established in 1952, three years before the town was founded, and began its partner-ship with Ringling College of Art and Design in April 2007.
The Arts Center, which houses the Durante Gallery, Cultural Media Room and many classroom spaces, offers a plethora of different classes, work-shops, performances, exhibitions and community events each year. Classes run from January through April and encompass all forms of art, including drawing, painting, jewelry, printmak-ing, sculpture, photography and more. World-renowned artists teach work-shops, which offer unique learning
opportunities, such as how to paint outdoor portraitures and seascapes.
With an ever-changing array of exhibitions, the Arts Center is always an exciting place to spend some time, whether you are a resident or just visiting. Both local and national artists display their creations there.
The Arts Center, located at 6860 Longboat Drive S., is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday January through April, and Tuesday through Friday September through December. Call 941-383-2345 for more information.
For those who love learning new things, there is no better place to cultivate that love than at the Long-boat Key Education Center.
The Longboat Key Education Center, a nonprofit adult-enrich-ment center, provides a wide range of education and recreation classes to residents and winter visitors to Longboat Key, as well as those who live in Sarasota and Manatee counties.
Laura Taubes founded the Educa-tion Center in 1985 with the belief that continued learning keeps the mind active and the spirit young. Its mission is to serve “all adults regard-less of residence or educational background.”
The Education Center is open from October through April and is divided into three terms: fall, winter and spring. There are more than 150 courses offered, ranging from yoga and tai chi to foreign affairs and book clubs that last from four to eight weeks. All courses are non-
credit, and there are no prerequisites for admission. The center also offers lecture series, performing-arts series, one-day workshops and guided day-long trips throughout Florida.
Performances such as live jazz combos, theater performances, piano recitals, movies and lectures from local and national speakers can be enjoyed throughout the season.
The Education Center is open to the public and features exhibits by local artists and faculty members.
For more information about the Education Center, visit its website at www.lbkeducationcenter.org or call 941-383-8811.

With its warm weather and sunny beaches, there is a lot to love about Longboat Key. It has always had plenty of idyllic settings for exchang-ing vows.
But brides and grooms want more from their wedding than a spectacular sunset. In addition to venues and caterers, couples need florists, limo services, hair and makeup for the bridal party, entertainment, photographers and tips about area attractions for out-of-town guests. Now, it’s easier than ever for couples to say “I do” to all the island has to offer, thanks to a new group called the Key Wedding Professionals.
The growing referral network provides wed-ding professionals with answers when a bride wants to know who to hire as a DJ or officiant or where to hold a rehearsal dinner. The group offers services that ensure every detail of your wedding is memorable — from limousine services to get you to the venue to photogra-phers and videographers who will capture your wedding so that you can reminisce about it decades later.
Longboat Key's beaches are private and offer an intimate setting in which to celebrate your love. But the Key’s pristine beach is just one op-tion for ceremonies. Venues range from four-star resorts for big events to smaller mom-and-pop hotels for intimate occasions. Other options include the Key’s lush gardens, parks and golf courses, its many unique restaurants and its five places of worship.
Marriage licenses can be obtained for ap-
proximately $95 at the Sarasota County Clerk of the Courts, 2000 Main St., Sarasota (941-861-7400) and Manatee County Clerk of the Courts, 1115 Manatee Ave. W., Bradenton (941-741-4020). Clergypersons are available to officiate, and you have the option of a civil offici-ant — Florida's Notaries Public are authorized to officiate at weddings in our state.
Contact the clerks’ offices for information about times/days of operation and current requirements, including the three-day waiting period for Florida residents and proof of identity.
For information about wedding planning, including a comprehensive wedding packet, con-tact the Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce at 941-383-2466 or email [email protected].

The waters surrounding Longboat Key provide novice and expert anglers an entrée to diverse species of fish. Sheepshead, sailfish, flounder, snook, redfish and tarpon are just a few of the species that make the area an angler's paradise. When fishing local waters, tailor your tackle to the species you are seeking. The best outfit for the area’s inshore waters is a matched 8- to 10-pound spinning or bait-casting rod and reel. In most offshore situations, a 20- to 30-pound outfit will suffice. When fishing offshore or inshore waters, artificial lures are effective and easy to use. Best bets include jigs, spoons and plugs. If you prefer live bait, shrimp are effective — numerous bait shops and marinas sell them.
If you’re a bit more resourceful you can net your own baitfish from the beach or grass flats that border the island. Rig light and avoid heavy lead sinkers that adversely affect the action of lures or live bait. Fly fishing is gaining popularity and is effective on all saltwater species. The extensive grass flats that surround the island are a magnet for game fish and a
good place to concentrate your efforts. Explore the deeper edges of the flats and the sand holes that dot them. Wade the shallow grass for a stealthy approach to redfish, snook and speckled sea trout. Explore Longboat Pass and New Pass, which hold concentrations of fish around the bridges, rock jetties and points. Anglers fishing from the bridges have access to a wide variety of fish, including pompano, bluefish, sheeps-
head, mangrove snapper and snook. One of the best and easiest places
to fish is the beach, itself. Concentrate your efforts right in the surf line and the slue that parallel most of the beach. Snook, whiting, flounder, lady-fish, pompano and Jack cravelle are a few of the fish you’ll find cruising the surf. A small white lead-headed jig or a chartreuse-and-white fly will mimic resident baitfish. When the sun is high and the water is calm, wear polarized
sunglasses and look for snook cruising right next to the beach.
Anglers with a boat will find tarpon schooling just off the beaches during May, June and July. Within sight of the beach you can also find schools of Spanish mackerel, bonito, king mackerel and cobia. Further off-shore the artificial reefs, ledges and hard bottom hold grouper, snapper, barracuda and other bottom dwell-ers. Also keep an eye out for surface action, including baitfish schools, diving birds or striking fish. During the spring and summer dolphin, sail-fish, tuna, wahoo and marlin inhabit the deeper Gulf waters.
One of the best ways to learn the local waters is to hire a fishing guide. Guides are on the water daily, know the seasonal patterns and provide anglers with the basics of effective tackle and techniques. Whether you decide to head out in a boat, fish from a bridge or just walk down the beach, make sure you don’t miss out on the lure of Longboat Key’s fabulous fishing.

The waters that encircle Longboat Key frame the island, its eastern flank a tapestry of islands and mangrove shorelines carpeted with verdant grass flats. To the west, the azure waters of the Gulf of Mexico bathe white sand beaches for more than 10 miles. Mariners with a sense of ad-venture and a willingness to explore the bay, Gulf and canals that intersect the island can unlock Longboat’s unique nautical charm. All four sea-sons provide excellent opportunities to discover its unique habitats.
Cannons Marina on the north end of Longboat Key can provide you with all your nautical needs for an outing on the water. Located on Sleepy Lagoon (marker 32 and 33 on the Intracoastal Waterway), the ma-rina boasts a full selection of charts, tackle, rental boats, motors and bait. After stocking up for a day’s outing, it is only a short trip to the Intracoastal Waterway and Sarasota Bay.
The Town of Longboat Key pur-chased and protected the Sister Keys, located just off the north end of the Key, in 1992. In 2007, Sister Keys un-derwent a mitigation that removed all invasive species. Indigenous veg-etation was then planted, and more than two acres of wetlands were created. Dolphins, ospreys, gopher tortoises, manatees, pelicans and raccoons are just some of the wildlife that you might see as you pass the keys in the Intracoastal Waterway. For a more intimate experience, visitors can kayak or paddleboard the islands’ shallow grass flats into the heart of this unique natural refuge.
A short ride to the north brings you to an idyllic anchorage and dock access to the Mar Vista Restaurant and Pub and Moore’s Stone Crab Restaurant. Nestled on the water in the Village, both establishments provide great food and a panoramic view of the bay. A bit further north and west and you’re at Longboat Pass, one of the most beautiful set-tings on Florida’s west coast.
Round the corner to the Gulfside of the island and, on a calm day, you can enjoy scenic views of the Key’s prime real estate — stop for a swim and savor a firsthand view of Long-boat’s beautiful beaches.
At the southern end of the Key you’ll arrive at New Pass and the southern entrance to Sarasota Bay.
Don’t miss the rustic ambience of the New Pass Grill and Bait Shop Res-taurant before rounding the island into Zwick’s Channel, where the Dry Dock Restaurant offers dockage and mouthwatering meals with a view of Sarasota’s expanding skyline.
Traveling along the bayside of the island, head west at marker 1 into Buttonwood Harbor. Whale Key lies just to the south, while flats to the north border the Town Islands and are an excellent location for bird watching. Pattigeorge’s restaurant is boater friendly and is easily accessed in Buttonwood Harbor. It is the per-fect spot for an early-evening dinner.
After leaving Buttonwood Harbor, it’s only a short trip back to our start-ing point on north Longboat Key. It makes sense to study a chart of the local waters before venturing out. If you should stray from the channel by mistake, be sure not to damage the seagrass beds. If you find yourself in a grass bed, tilt your motor and push, pole or paddle into deeper water.
To really experience Longboat Key’s natural assets, leave the shore and ex-plore the beautiful and bountiful waters that surround our sub-tropical paradise. Whether by sailboat, powerboat, kayak or paddleboard, you’ll get a firsthand view of the real Longboat Key.

LONGBOAT KEY IS
FOR THE BIRDSThe beaches of Longboat from
Longboat Pass to New Pass host some of the best bird watching in Florida. On the northern tip of the island you’ll find Greer Island (although it is not an actual island), known locally as “Beer Can Island.” Part of the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail, Greer Island can be accessed from public parking at the west end of Broadway Street and the west end of Northshore Drive. The tip of the island is eroding and appears to only be accessible at low tide, but there is a trail through the mangroves where visitors can walk all the way to the Longboat Pass Bridge.
There are downed Australian pines here that make for some dramatic backdrops for photogra-phers, but the birds can be found inhabiting the beach line, from the tip of the island south for almost two miles. Some of the largest concentra-tions of birds will be found from the Broadway access south. American oystercatchers, black skimmers, red
knots, black-bellied plovers and willets can be found here all winter long, sometimes in large congre-gations. Ruddy turnstones and sanderlings are year-round residents. Snowy and Wilson’s plovers comb the wrackline (debris left on the beach by high tide), and occasional winter visitors include northern gannets, piping plovers, whimbrels and marbled godwits. Beachgo-ers are also encouraged to keep an eye to the sky, where they may see magnificent frigatebirds, ospreys, brown pelicans and, occasionally, an American bald eagle.
Birders can also expect to see a range of terns and all the typical gulls. A few of the terns include royal terns, common terns, Caspian terns, Forster’s terns and sandwich terns. Snowy egrets and great blue herons like to perch on the wave-polished dead trees that line the shore.
The bayside of the island has several top birding spots where enthusiasts can view wading birds
such as the roseate spoonbill, reddish egret, tri-colored heron, little blue heron and wood stork. A sure sign that winter visitors are present is the arrival of the majestic white pelicans that line the bay during the winter months. You’ll find great viewing op-portunities for pelicans and wading birds on the bayside of Greer Island, the Longbeach Village, Joan Durante Park and the Quick Point Nature Preserve to the south on New Pass. Both Durante and Quick Point have extensive nature trails with inland ca-nals and bayfront grass flats. Boaters will find Sarasota Bay rich with grass
flats that can host thousands of birds on a low tide.
One of the gems of Longboat Key is the Sister Keys, a group of islands that were protected from develop-ment in 1992 and benefited from a $1 million-plus mitigation project beginning in 2007. The indigenous flora and created wetlands have been a boon for local wildlife.
Whether you’re a veteran bird-watcher, a photographer or just enjoy Florida’s coastal beauty, you’ll find Longboat Key’s rich and abun-dant bird life a feast for the senses.

MOTE MARINE LABORATORY AND AQUARIUM
Have you ever wondered what it’s like to watch a shark eat its lunch, see a manatee up close or touch a stringray? At Mote Marine Labora-tory & Aquarium, located on City Island just over the New Pass Bridge, you can take in all of these exciting experiences.
Mote Aquarium is part of Mote Marine Laboratory, an independent non-profit organization that encom-passes not only the public aquarium, but also seven research centers and an education division.
Mote Aquarium is home to sharks, manatees, dolphins, sea turtles and more than 100 other species of marine life.
Two of Mote’s biggest attractions, both metaphorically and literally, are its resident manatees, Hugh and Buffett. Hugh and Buffett are the only two manatees in the world trained to participate in research. When they’re not busy helping scientists at Mote Marine Laboratory learn about their species, they spend their time snack-ing on approximately 72 heads of lettuce per day.
From the larger-than-life manatees to delicate seahorses, the multitude of marine life at Mote is sure to amaze visitors.
LONGBOAT KEY TURTLE WATCH
If you’re on Longboat Key during the months of May through October, you may witness some tiny miracles taking place on our beautiful white sand beaches, as baby sea turtles emerge from their nests and crawl toward the Gulf of Mexico.
Sea-turtle nesting season takes place from May through October, when the female sea turtles come onto the beach and lay their eggs; the turtles return to the beach where they hatched, oftentimes to the exact spot where they hatched.
Only one in 1,000 baby sea turtles will survive to maturity, so Longboat-ers do everything possible to help
these little creatures make their way. Longboat Key Turtle Watch, a group of dedicated volunteers, monitors turtle nests on the north end of the Key, while the Mote Marine Labora-tory Turtle Conservation Team monitors the south end.
Longboaters also do their part by turning off any lights on or near the beach after dark. This is crucial, be-cause hatchings occur at night, when the baby turtles are programmed to follow the moonlight to the water.
Whether you attend a nest opening or witness this wondrous occurrence during a stroll on the beach, the excitement of turtle nest-ing season is shared by everyone on Longboat Key. But, all visitors must remember to keep their distance when observing these magnificent occurrences and simply marvel at Mother Nature at work.
SAVE OUR SEABIRDSEach winter, Longboaters welcome
some of their favorite visitors from the North — of the feathered variety — as bluebirds, loons and other species of migrating seabirds flock to Longboat Key when the weather turns cold.
Unfortunately, many migrating birds and native species alike face dangerous obstacles, such as fishing lines, boat propellers and vehicle col-lisions, which can leave them injured and at risk.
That’s where Save Our Seabirds comes in. Save Our Seabirds is a non-profit organization founded in 2008
that helps birds that are sick, injured or simply unable to survive on their own in the wild.
Save Our Seabirds, 1708 Ken Thompson Parkway, is home to up to 250 birds. The birds are treated and rehabilitated in the hope of releasing them back into their natural environ-ment.
Many of the birds, including sand-hill cranes, swans, owls and hawks, are on display for visitors to see and learn about, free of charge.
The organization also hosts guided tours of its facility every Sunday, when visitors can get an in-depth les-son on the different species of birds.
THINGS TO DO
Modern sea turtles have been in existence for more than 120 million years.

It’s easy to see why Travel + Lei-sure magazine named The Resort at Longboat Key Club in its annual list-ing of the top 500 hotels and resorts worldwide. Whether you’re planning a romantic weekend getaway, family vacation, wedding or meeting, The Resort at Longboat Key Club offers an unforgettable experience.
Located on the southern tip of Longboat Key’s white sand beaches, the resort’s 221 rooms offer breath-taking views of the Gulf of Mexico, Islandside golf course or a private lagoon.
The resort opened in 1982 with a three-month celebration titled “Cele-bration of a Dream” — a reference to circus magnate John Ringling’s vision in the 1920s of a luxurious hotel that would be the jewel of the island.
Nearly 32 years later, that dream is alive and well. Since Ocean Proper-ties purchased the resort and Key Club facilities in late 2012, the prop-erties have undergone approximately $4.5 million in upgrades.
The Key Club’s ongoing commit-ment to sustainability also earned it Florida’s official “Green Lodging”
certification.Once you pass through the gates,
you’ll find Four-Diamond amenities that will make you certain you’ve found your home away from home.
The Tennis Gardens, with its 20 Har-Tru courts, has earned numer-ous accolades since it opened in 2009, including recognition in Tennis magazine’s “Top Tennis Resorts of 2012” and on Tennis Resorts Online, which listed the Key Club as a “2013 Gold Medal Tennis Resort.”
The Islandside golf course includes 18 holes spread over lush greens overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. The Harbourside course offers three nine-hole courses designed by Wil-lard Byrd.
But recreation at the resort goes beyond tennis and golf.
A 9.5-mile island path makes for a scenic bike ride, jog or stroll. (Bicycles and helmets are available.)
A 291-slip marina can accommo-date boats of up to 150 feet.
If relaxation is your goal, consider an island-inspired facial or massage and a wide variety of wellness-orient-ed body treatments and aroma-therapies at The Spa. Also consider scheduling a session with a personal trainer in the state-of-the-art Fit-ness Center or trying spin or Pilates classes in the Mind & Motion Studio or beachside yoga and tai chi.
The resort is a place where busi-ness and pleasure mix: Its prime loca-tion and flexible meeting space make it a top destination for executive retreats and groups of 10 to 150.
With inclusive wedding packages and five venues ranging from the pristine beachfront to an elegant ballroom, it is an ideal place to say, “I do.”
The resort is just minutes away from St. Armands Circle’s world-class shops and restaurants and Sarasota’s cultural attractions.
It’s easily accessible from Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport and Tampa International Airport and driving distance from famed Florida attractions such as Orlando theme parks — Walt Disney World, Sea World and Universal Studios; Tampa's Busch Gardens and St. Petersburg’s Dali Museum.
The Town of Longboat Key was born Nov. 14, 1955.
That’s when 199 of the island’s 250 registered voters gathered in a tiny fire station and voted 186-13 in favor of incorporation.
The Town has done a lot of growing up in its first 58 years.
Today, it has more than 6,200 registered voters, a permanent population of 6,884 residents and a population of 18,000 to 24,000 during peak season.
Split between Sarasota and Manatee counties, the Town is governed by the seven-member Longboat Key Town Commission and administered under a town manager/council form of govern-ment.
The town has approximately 120 employees and a full complement of departments, including Planning Zoning and Building, Public Works, Town Clerk, Police, Fire-Rescue, IT and Finance.
Longboat Key is consistently ranked as one of the 10 safest
towns in Florida. The Police De-partment includes 19 sworn offi-cers, many of whom are also EMTs. The police marine patrol units pa-trol the waterways surrounding the Key. The Fire-Rescue Department has 33 sworn emergency person-nel, all of whom are paramedics or EMTs. The department also offers services to the community such as blood pressure screening, fire/safety inspections and CPR train-ing. Both departments maintain cooperative relationships with po-lice and fire departments in other communities.
The Town is responsible for maintaining one of the Key’s most valuable assets: its 12 miles of white sand beach that make the island a world-class tourist destina-tion, plus 12 public beach accesses.
Town-operated recreational amenities include the Longboat Key Public Tennis Center, which offers 10 soft clay courts, teach-ing professionals, an observation
deck and regular events; and Bayfront Park Recreation Center, where you’ll find regular fitness classes and bridge games, plus a playground, tennis, basketball and shuffleboard courts and a multi-purpose ball field.
Other Town parks are Bicenten-nial Park, Joan M. Durante Park, Quick Point Nature Preserve and Overlook Park.

Longboat Key is known for more than its beaches.
The island is renowned for its plethora of restaurants that will whet the appetite of any diner. In fact, Florida Trend magazine recently recognized three restaurants on the 10.8-mile island in its annual “Golden Spoon Awards,” which honor the state’s top restaurants.
Whether you want a romantic, candlelight dinner at a Zagat-rated
restaurant, an Old Florida experience or a casual place to bring the whole family before or after a trip to the beach, Longboat Key has an array of options. Restaurant hours vary, but the Key has options for breakfast, lunch and dinner, seven days a week.
Many of the Key’s restaurants are as famous for their waterfront views as they are for their menus. The Key includes both Gulf-front and bayfront restaurants, many of which offer out-
door dining, and several of which are accessible by boat. Don’t be surprised if you spot a dolphin or manatee or capture a stunning sunset on your camera, all while dining outdoors.
With the Gulf of Mexico and Sarasota Bay in their backyard, many restaurants specialize in fresh, local seafood. The Key is home to several famous grouper sandwiches, while stone crabs are a popular choice when they are in season — from Oct.
15 through May 15. The island also has options for steak, sandwiches, pizza, vegetarian dining and more.
Drinking options also abound: You will find no shortage of happy hours or extensive wine selections on Longboat Key.
Many restaurants offer catering services and are also available to host private parties and events.
St. Armands Circle and Lido Key’s hotels also offer an eclectic mix of dining options.
For up-to-date information about Key restaurants, contact the Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce at 941-383-2466.
