SOMETIMES, OUR HIGHEST HEIGHTS HAPPEN
LONG BEFORE TAKEOFF Proud sponsor of Shaw Festival 2018.
sometimes i thinK we mUst be crazy. In an age where atten-tion spans are measurable in seconds, the theatre says to the world “Come and concentrate for two or three hours!” When people can’t stop texting even to drive a car, the theatre asks them to switch off their phones altogether, some-times for a whole hour. How do we expect to attract an audience?
And yet this weakness is really our greatest strength. Th e world is fi nally waking up to the danger of perpetual distraction. Th e fact that internet executives will not
let their children have screens of any sort says it all: they know the power of the digital media to keep us all in a state of continuous click-through.
It is time to reclaim our attention. We get to choose whether our time is well spent or wasted; and we know that being in the same room with other people, listening to them and being heard by them, is what keeps us human. So when the announcement comes to switch off our phones, let’s celebrate: Hurrah! At last, for a while, we get to be present. Together.

The Enlightened Baronessby leonard conolly
Since Bernard Shaw is, and ever was, the guiding spirit of the Shaw Festival, it is not un-reasonable to seek and to reflect on the Shavian spirit in a play that is not likely to be known to Festival audiences. The very title of Michael Mackenzie’s The Baroness and the Pig has a Shavian ring about it. Shaw liked intriguing titles, titles that prompt audiences to ask
“What on earth can that be about?” He doesn’t have a Baroness in his playlist, but a Duchess appears in Annajanska, the Wild Grand Duchess, outranked by the Inca in The Inca of Peru-salem. And what are we to make of a play with the title of Passion, Poison, and Petrifaction, or The Fatal Gazogene? Or The Simpleton of the Unexpected Isles? (All of which, incidentally, have been performed at the Shaw Festival.) But while the titles in themselves don’t reveal the connection (apart from the whimsical coincidence of the “pyg”), the Shaw play most closely allied thematically to The Baroness and the Pig is Pygmalion.
Both plays have to do with a person of privilege and authority teaching language and social skills to a seriously disadvantaged person (one having been reared in a French pigsty, the other living in penury in a London slum) to open up opportunities for that person for self-improvement and a degree of economic security. There is, to be sure, a wide divergence
between the expected outcomes of the teaching, Eliza’s ultimate social aspirations in Pygmalion (a lady) far ex-ceeding those of Emily in The Baroness (a lady’s maid). But the knowledge and skills they acquire are similar: vocabulary, pronunciation, dress codes, social protocols, even a familiarity with Shakespeare (Eliza is taken to a Shakespeare exhibition in London, Emily reads Julius Caesar with the Baroness). By the end of each play — and both plays have striking and revelatory endings — we are positioned to judge the results of the educational process for Eliza and Emily. At the same time, inevitably, we as-sess the teacher as well as the pupil. The contrasting mo-tivations of the two teachers, which are made explicit by each playwright, are instructive. In Pygmalion, Henry Higgins, Eliza’s teacher, undertakes the education of Eli-za to win a bet; in The Baroness and the Pig, the Baroness, as she explains in her opening monologue, undertakes the education of Emily as part of what she sees as her “re-sponsibilities to the lower classes.” That is, while the so-cial standing of both Higgins and the Baroness isolates them from the rampant inequalities and injustices of their respective societies (London and Paris at the turn of
the nineteenth century), it is only the Baroness who takes an enlightened attitude towards those circumstances, albeit with a narrowly defined perspective.
Not only is the Baroness enlightened, she is a child of the Enlightenment, that eigh-teenth-century “age of reason,” during which philosophers such as Jean-Jacques Rousseau insisted on the primacy of rational thought as the basis for liberty and equality. The Baron-ess particularly remembers her childhood “forbidden reading” of Rousseau’s Émile: ou De l’Éducation, published in 1762 and immediately banned in Paris for its alleged attack on formal religion. In his treatise-cum-novel, Rousseau explored and defined how through education the natural goodness that he and other philosophers believed were possessed by

all humans at birth can be protected against the corrupting influences of society. “Tout est bien sortant des mains de l’Auteur des choses, tout dégénère entre les mains de l’homme” is the famous opening sentence of Émile (“Everything is good as it leaves the hands of the author of things, everything degenerates in the hands of man”). A carefully constructed educational process (one not dissimilar to that shaped by the Baroness for Emily), will, Rousseau argued, blend nature and reason to create the ideal citizen.
Inspired by Rousseau, and in need of a new maid, the Baroness sets herself the task of transforming “a pure, unsullied creature” into a presentable maid. But where to find such a creature? Higgins encounters Eliza in the gutters of Covent Garden. Rousseau needed only his imagination to create Émile. But the Baroness recalls a precedent: the case of an
“enfant sauvage” being captured (in 1798) in the woods near Aveyron, a village 700 km south of Paris. The child, a boy aged about eleven or twelve who came to be known as Victor “the wild boy of Aveyron,” seems to have been abandoned by his parents. After being caged and publicly exhibited in Paris, Victor was treated by several physicians. The Baroness identifies one such physician, Jean-Marc-Gaspard Itard, who is usually credited with helping Victor reintegrate into society. Itard’s Mémoire et Rapport sur Victor de l’Aveyron, first published in 1801, described his work with Victor. (François Truffaut’s 1970 film about Victor, L’Enfant Sauvage, is based on Itard’s book.)
Encouraged by Victor’s case (“somewhere in the forests of France was my prodigy!”), the Baroness eventually finds her own enfant sau-vage, not in a forest but on a farm, an illegitimate girl in a large peasant family who has been put out to live with farm animals, including pigs,
“with nothing but a large pair of boots.” The Baroness names her Emily, “after Rousseau’s Émile,” she says.
While Emily is named after Émile, her experiences under the tu-telage of the Baroness are very different from her counterpart, who lives from birth in a sheltered and safe environment. So does Eliza after coming under Higgins’s care, and Victor after coming under Itard’s care. The obstacles encountered by Eliza, Émile and Victor are considerable, but also for the most part predictable, manageable and surmountable. Not so with Emily. Learning how to set a table is one thing; Emily’s unfore-seen traumas are quite another and raise questions that neither Rousseau nor Shaw in their fictional narratives contemplated. In Emily’s circumstances, how is Rousseau’s neat bal-ance between nature and reason sustained? What moral imperatives differentiate instinc-tive behaviour from rational behaviour? How does a pigsty differ from the servants’ bed-rooms in a French baronial home? What chance have the Baroness’s enlightened plans for Emily in the messy human world that is their reality?
Robert Burns, another child of the Enlightenment (of the Scottish variety), provided a cautionary antidote to the age of reason. “The best laid schemes o’ mice an’ men / Gang aft a-gley,” he famously wrote. But what goes awry with the efforts of the Baroness and her maid reflects, perhaps, not so much a negation of enlightenment so much as a determi-nation to resist those forces that would extinguish it. A lesson for our times if ever there was one.

Director’s Notesby selma dimitrijevic
We are all familiar with Donald Rumsfeld’s famous observation during the war in Iraq:
“There are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know.” Less famous is Slavoj Žižek’s assertion that Rums-feld left out perhaps the most dangerous type of knowledge, unknown knowns, those things we know, but do not know we know them.
Writing in the aftermath of the release of Chelsea Manning’s leaked documents via WikiLeaks, Žižek said, “The only surprising thing about the WikiLeaks revelations is that they contain no surprises.” WikiLeaks re-leased over 75,000 classified documents and Žižek claims that nothing the documents contained came as a huge surprise to us, the public, and that we learned exactly what we thought we would learn from them. The dis-ruption these publications caused wasn’t in revealing secrets no one suspected, but in removing the possibility for us, the public, to pretend that we are clueless about what is going on.
Our ability and need to pretend that things are not what we know they are is a fascinating and deeply human impulse. Just think about all the times you might have en-countered it: from tiny social niceties of not acknowledging the spinach stuck in your friend’s teeth, to the catastrophic global crisis of ignoring the evidence of global warming. Our capacity to not know what we know is apparently limitless.
This fascinating play explores the mo-ment of the collapse of faux ignorance and in witty, direct and painful ways asks “how must you act, when you suddenly know everything that you know?”

Production HistoryThe play for The Baroness and the Pig was originally developed and produced by the Na-tional Arts Centre in Ottawa. In 1998, it appeared at Omnibus le corps de théâtre, in Mon-treal; and an English-language production took place at Montreal’s Imago Theatre in 2008. Michael Mackenzie wrote and directed a film version in 2003, with Patricia Clarkson and Colm Feore, and a score composed by Phillip Glass. It was shown at the Toronto Film Festi-val, Sundance Film Festival, Festival du Nouveau Cinéma in Montreal, and the San Fran-cisco Film Festival.

CAMELLIA KOO DesignerSHAW 2018: Designer for The Baroness and the Pig, The Orchard (After Chekhov) and Henry V. One of my grandfathers, Ting Koo, founded the Peking Opera Group of Toronto. As a kid, instead of watching the shows, I was always running around back-stage with my cousins, not really paying attention to the crew setting up and the performers applying their face make-up. My other grandfather, Dragon Lee, was also sometimes one of those performers play-ing Guang Gung, the god with the fierce red face. Years later, I still get such a thrill hanging out backstage and watching the show from the wings whenever I’m allowed to. I love watching the backstage hubbub and organized chaos of scene changes and costume quick-changes, because it always reminds me of my grandfathers.
KEVIN LAMOTTE Lighting DesignerSHAW 2018: Lighting designer for The Bar-oness and the Pig, The Magician’s Nephew, Mythos, Henry V and A Christmas Carol. One of my early memories of watching a play was here at the Shaw Festival in 1982. That summer I was considering a career in the arts and maybe theatre design, al-though that all seemed like a long shot at the time. The Shaw’s production of Cyrano de Bergerac, with sets and costumes by Cameron Porteous and lighting design by Robert Thomson, was so inspiring then and has stayed with me all this time. Cyrano ended with a single leaf falling from above through a beautiful, golden (well-focused) side light by Rob. Incredible! Is it possible that my career choice hinged on that moment? I like to think so.

Born and raised in Toronto, I originally planned to be a guitarist and was playing with several bands when, at twenty-five, I was asked to play guitar in a rock version of Rigoletto at Theatre Passe Muraille. I had no idea about theatre until then. Two years later, I was back there doing music and sound design for Eugene Strickland’s Quartet, directed by Alisa Palmer. I played live onstage with my partner Julia Aplin. We won a Dora and the next year I was asked to do fourteen shows. It’s been a solid and entertaining ride since then. Here at Shaw, The Divine, Dracula and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof are a few shows that I’ve worked on that have really made me proud.

I memorized the box off ice phone number for The Phantom of the Opera and begged my parents to take me. My dad bought Phantom-shaped wine gums, and I can still remember the dress I wore. It was all very exciting and, as I watched the show, I knew that’s what I want-ed to do. But, it wasn’t until my high school drama class that I truly fell in love with playing pretend. Our teacher, Debra McLauchlan, inspired in us curiosity and creativity. She became a mentor and dear friend, and has watched almost every play I’ve been in since.

I have been homesteading in Stratford (where theatre-goers may have seen me in recent skits like The Virgin Trial and A Little Night Music), but have recently decamped to Niagara-on-the-Lake, where I am pleased to be making my Shaw Festival debut. From time to time, I write. My favourite roles or productions are the ones I am about to do. Future goals — aside from continuing to act and to direct — include learning to knit socks, driving to Niagara-on-the-Lake without the aid of a gPs and emergency provisions, cycle-touring the lakefront and the Niagara region, and canning a lot of peaches.

DORA TOMASSI Stage ManagerSHAW 2018: Stage manager for The Bar-oness and the Pig and The Magician’s Nephew; 17th season. As a little girl grow-ing up in Toronto, theatre companies would perform at my school. I loved it so much that I would beg my teacher to let my friends and me put on a play we had ‘made up’ during recess. Fast forward many years, I was returning to my old elementary school with the coc’s school production of The Magic Flute. During my eight years on the stage-management team at the coc, I was lucky to have worked on shows with Maestro Richard Bradshaw. My first show here at Shaw was working with director Neil Munro on The
Man Who Came to Dinner. My favourite show here was When the Rain Stops Falling...it changed me.
BRADLEY DUNN Assistant Stage ManagerSHAW 2018: Assistant stage manager for The Baroness and the Pig and Henry V; 1st season. My mom has this awesome home video of me performing “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)” by the Backstreet Boys at my grade two Air-Band. I played Nick, because he was the coolest. The performing-arts bug bit me. Fast-forward fifteen years, I stumbled upon stage management in my undergrad years and immediately knew it was for me. I love being part of the entire process. I love the people in this community. I love the art. I wouldn’t be here without Debra McKay, my college stage-management teacher. She took me under her wing, inspired me, and continues to mentor me throughout my career. To her, and my many other amazing mentors, I’m forever grateful.
“People are always blaming circumstances for what they are. I don’t believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and, if they can’t find them, make them.”

In the Interest of All PatronsCELLULAR PHONES, CAMERAS AND RECORDING DEVICES During the performance, there is no photography or filming permitted, and we ask that you turn off your cell phones. We do invite you to take photos when the house lights are on — pre-show, at intermission and post-show. Please ensure that wristwatch alarms and other noisemakers cannot sound during the perfor-mance. Alternatively, you can leave them with our staff at the Coat Check.
ASSISTIVE LISTENING DEVICES for the hard of hearing are available at all three of our theatres. There is no charge, but we do ask you to consider a donation at time of pick up. This donation helps with the cost to repair and replace these devices. Reserve early, limited availability. Please see the House Manager on duty.
IF YOU ARE LATE OR NEED TO LEAVE THE AUDITORIUM during the performance, you will be re-seated at a suitable break in the performance, at which time the seating location will be at the discretion of management.
FOR FIRST AID please see the House Manager or the nearest usher. At least one staff member on duty is trained in First Aid and CPR.
FOR YOUR SAFETY all of our theatres have the requisite exits and have been inspected. The theatres and exits to the buildings have emergency lighting in case of a power outage. In an emer-gency, our staff are trained to carry out an immediate and effective evacuation. You are requested to follow their instructions and remain calm. You will be directed to a marshalling area: please remain there until otherwise advised by our staff or emergency personnel. If you discover a fire you should activate the nearest alarm and, immediately following evacuation, identify yourself to a staff member and provide details of the alarm.
