Making new music happenOur world-renowned brand and quality attracts funding and investment from wide and varied sources. A safe and sustainable financial foundation gives confidence to create new music; offering a stable platform from which artists can be adventurous and take risks for the future.

Making 21st century music for the world stageNew music matters. It is the future of the art form and we are passionate about creating it with composers of the 21st century. We commission and curate inspiring projects performed by extraordinary musicians to people around the world.

CommissionsWe commission around 20 new works every year. In 2013 this included Renewal – young British composer Luke Bedford’s first piece for extended ensemble.

“Renewal was well served for its world premiere by the London Sinfonietta who executed the minute adjustments of tempo and timbre with precision and brilliance.” ***** The Guardian

CollaborationsEvery year an estimated 500,000 people listen to us on the radio, and last summer we joined The Stranglers, Laura Marling and Cerys Matthews for the first ever mash up between BBC Radio 3 and 6 Music. A sold-out audience of 6,000 watched the Late Night Prom live at the Royal Albert Hall.

“Listening to The Stranglers and the London Sinfonietta from last night’s Proms. Whose idea was THAT? Great stuff.” @TWhittermarsh

International touringWe travelled 33,000 miles in the past 18 months, from Italy, Denmark and France to China and Argentina.

“Tonight at Teatro Colón. @Ldn_Sinfonietta’s collaboration with Orquesta Nacional y Juvenil del Bicentenario presents Nono’s Prometeo.” @DanielPioro

PremieresWe brought 38 world and UK premieres to British audiences over the last 18 months, including 21 works we commissioned.

“Georg Friedrich Haas’ in vain, definitely one to see before you die. Thank you @Ldn_Sinfonietta.” @TomKilw

We performed to over 9,000 people in one week, having co-commissioned Steve Reich to compose a work inspired by Radiohead.

“Overheard A-level boy in @Ldn_Sinfonietta Steve Reich concert say ‘one day we’ll tell our grandchildren about this concert’.” @makesmeexcited

Making new music in new waysNew music is diverse and suprising. We champion the unusual, ground-breaking and extraordinary; providing a research space for artists, students, audiences and businesses to learn, create, play and experiment with the ideas and sounds of the new.

Nurturing the artists who make new musicNew music is constantly evolving. We inspire and support the brilliant and dedicated young artists who will compose, perform and produce new music in the future through training and professional opportunities, sharing over 45 years of experience.

Writing the Future11 emerging composers have workshopped new chamber pieces with our musicians over the last year, which we’ve premiered at our annual New Music Show.

“The London Sinfonietta are up for anything. They’re very good at getting into the mindset of a composer, working out exactly what you’re going for and adjusting accordingly.” Matthew Kaner, Writing The Future composer

Side-by-sideOver 200 young musicians and conductors were trained, coached or performed side-by-side with us at Southbank Centre.

“The London Sinfonietta and Royal Academy of Music’s Manson Ensemble…pulled off a remarkable feat of ensemble, precision and sheer virtuoso performing skills.” **** The Times

London Sinfonietta AcademyWe trained 28 musicians and 3 conductors in our fifth annual London Sinfonietta Academy course, conducted by George Benjamin.

“A week of great music making, inspiration and fun. I have come out at the other end as a more confident performer with added motivation to keep improving.” Mana Shibata, Academy oboe student

Emerging Artists ProgrammeEach season over 20 young professionals are given real working opportunities alongside our Principal Players through the Emerging Artists Programme.

“Some of the experiences we have in the London Sinfonietta are so different from the musical life in other orchestras and ensembles. There is no better way to pass these on to the next generation of players than by sitting on a stage and playing together with them.” Alastair Mackie, Principal Trumpet

University partnershipsWe are working with Universities, including Southampton and Kingston, on research projects to develop knowledge and practice that we will share with the sector.

“Working in partnership with the London Sinfonietta will allow me to access their wealth of knowledge and experience, built up over nearly half a century, of bringing new musical ideas to the public - whilst allowing me to share the latest technological innovations from academia with them.” Daniel Halford, PhD Studentship at Southampton University

Blue Touch PaperIn the second year of Blue Touch Paper, 3 composers collaborated with a writer, artist and director to create interdisciplinary work that we previewed at Village Underground in East London.

“The London Sinfonietta’s Blue Touch Paper programme allowed me to create a piece of radio-theatre with a truly compatible director – something I had wanted to do for a long time.” Edward Jessen, Blue Touch Paper composer

Making new music part of people’s livesNew music can inspire, challenge and engage you. We want to share our passion for new music with audiences of all ages and from all walks of life. We believe that hearing it, making it and performing it with us will change people and communities.

Concerts for Schools5,000 Primary and Secondary School pupils have explored new music with us, as part of our year-long programme of Concerts for Schools.

“One of the most valuable trips I have attended with our students, reinforcing the teaching in school in a positive and engaging way. The students were buzzing about it on the train home and even treated the commuters to a rendition of Clapping Music!” Claire Marris, Thamesmead School

UK touringAt The World’s Edge was developed by Anna Jones, Elspeth Brooke and Seonaid Goody on our interdisciplinary Blue Touch Paper programme, and in summer 2013 we toured it to Salisbury, Norfolk & Norwich and Spitalfields Music festivals.

“What was most impressive about At the World’s Edge was how deeply the collaboration seemed to go. The puppets were deftly handled, and especially elegant were the moments of interaction between them and the musicians.” Bachtrack

Digital engagementOur Facebook community has increased by 193% and Twitter followers by 115% through innovative, intriguing campaigns around every event. This reach brings new audiences to see us live – on average 33% of our bookers are brand new to Southbank Centre each season.

Public participationLast summer we asked the public to RSVP with a piece of new music on a postcard. 355 submissions from 170 people in 20 countries later, our Principal Players chose 3 winners and performed their postcards at Kings Place.

A sold-out audience of 6,000 watched the Late Night Prom live at the Royal Albert Hall.
