Queen's Park Report

Happy Canada Day! I hope you enjoyed a beautiful weekend with family and friends. We are constantly reminded that we live in a wonderful Country, Prov-ince and City. My weekend included cele-brations in Hyde Park (Northwest Opti-mists and the West Park Church), Harris Park (thanks Randy Warden and volun-teers), Springbank Park (African Commu-nity Council), and in Byron with the Byron Optimists. The Budget Passed! On June 20th, we became one of the only minority Lib-eral governments in Ontario’s history to pass a budget. Of course, there was a little excite-ment along the way. The important news is that we can concentrate on what most people are thinking about – creating jobs, protecting important services and building on our gains in education and health care. What’s In It: The Budget includes:

A firm plan to reach a balanced budget by 2017-18 The $2.5 billion Jobs and Prosperity Fund Continued improvements in educa-tion and health care Support for London- more upload-ing of service costs and the Gas Tax program

London: We have been showing steady job growth over the past several months. There is a long way to go, but we are headed in the right direction. Hot Days – Enough Power: Wow, it has been hot. We’ve had record tem-peratures and muggy conditions. As En-ergy Minister, I want to make sure we have enough power for families and businesses. It was not too many years ago that we had a shortage of power. Brownouts were not

uncommon on hot days in 2002-03. Ontario now has had enough power because of the work that has been done to bring on more generat-ing capacity. Even the national news remarked on the positive change! All good news for the Energy Minister! Industrial Electricity Incentive: Having enough power in case it is needed on really hot or cold days, or for safety, means we must have extra power on other days that usually is exported. What else could we do with it? Why not use it here to create jobs? We launched a program to offer the extra power, at a deeply discounted rate, to businesses that create extra jobs. The discount stays as long as the jobs stay. For example, a business that brings on a new shift can get the power to support that shift at a 60% discount. There is a lot of interest already. Note: The pro-gram will not shift any costs to others. It is simply making better use of what we have. Festivals: London is fast becoming a festival destination. Sunfest alone at-tracts over 200,000 visitors, and is ranked as one of the best in North America. We are pleased to be supporting it on your be-half with a $75,000 grant. Contact Me: Please let me know your advice, questions or comments at [email protected] , http://www.chrisbentley.onmpp.ca/ or 519-657-3120.

Due to soaring temperatures and over 18 days only 1.5 cm of rain, the City has issued a tree watering alert. Londoners are being asked to water new and mature trees on private and City property. All trees, big and small, need at least 2.5 cm of water per week in order to thrive. "Although we did receive rain last week, it wasn’t enough to maintain the regular biological functions of trees: to build new buds cells; ensure root growth and build up energy reserves to prepare them for the winter and next spring's growth," says Ivan Listar, Manager of Urban For-estry. "Trees weakened by lack of water make them less resilient in the long term." Drought is the major cause of tree stress and can lead to permanent damage, especially in young trees. Lengthy

periods without rain - typi-cally a week or more - can

lead to the most common symptoms of stress appearing, including browning and wilting of leaves. Sometimes the symptoms of drought stress are not visible until the next year, when they appear in the form of insect attacks and disease. “We’re always encouraged by the response of Lon-doners to our tree watering alerts in times of drought,” says Andrew Macpherson, Manager, Parks Planning & Design. “We thank everyone who helps care for our urban forest, and this year would like to give special recognition to the groups who have joined the Veterans Memorial Parkway Community Programme in ‘adopting’ sections of the park-way - most notably: Trojan Technologies, 3M and Starlim Canada.” When watering trees it is important to soak the soil

slowly around the tree continuing out to the outer branches to ensure all the roots get moisture. To make optimal use of water, early morning or evening watering will reduce evaporation loss. The cost to water a tree is less than a quarter per week. Please remember the City of London Water By-law W-3 is in effect until August 31. If your street address ends with a 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 you can water outdoors on EVEN numbered calendar days only. If your street address ends with a 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 you can water outdoors on ODD numbered calendar days only. Did you know? Unlike grass, trees do not go dormant during times of drought – they continue to try to grow. We need to water our trees before watering our lawns to avoid long-term damage.

CANADIAN OLYMPIC TEAM NAILS 2012 COLOURS TO THE MAST AS SIMON WHITFIELD NAMED FLAG BEARER

OTTAWA – Veteran triathlete Simon Whitfield (Victoria, B.C.) will be the Canadian Olympic Team flag bearer for the Opening Ceremony at the London 2012 Olympic Games. The Canadian Olympic Committee made the announcement today in a pomp-filled event involving the iconic Ceremonial Guard at the Centennial Flame on Parliament Hill. Whitfield, who was joined by his father, mother and sister, was quick to emphasize that the true honour of being named flag bearer lies in representing the entire Canadian Olympic Team. "It was a huge thrill for me to receive the call from my Olympic hero, Mark Tewksbury, asking me to be Can-ada’s flag-bearer,” said Whitfield. "Once I got over the shock of how cool it was that Mark called, my thoughts turned to all of the incredibly talented Canadian athletes on this team. It’s an honour to have the opportunity to carry our flag while representing the sport of triathlon, but more importantly, it’s a privilege to be the one who will lead this

amazing team of Canadian athletes who have dedicated their lives to achieving their Olympic dream and represent our nation on the world’s greatest sporting stage." Whitfield is a two-time Olympic medallist, winning gold in the first ever Olympic Triathlon event in Sydney in 2000 and earning silver in a thrilling finish four years ago in Beijing. He also carried the Maple Leaf into the Closing Ceremonies in Sydney. He won the prestigious 2009 World Cup in Des Moines, Idaho, a bronze medal at the 2009 World Team Championships, a gold medal at the 2002 Common-wealth Games, and a bronze medal at the 1999 Pan American Games. In all, Whitfield has 14 World Cup victories and 21 podium finishes, in addition to seven top-10 finishes at World Championships and 10 Canadian National Championships. “Simon Whitfield is truly a fitting representative of this year’s team and how they see themselves which, in their own words, is Fierce. Proud. World-Class. Relentless. Unbreakable,” said 2012 Canadian Olympic Team Chef de

Mission Mark Tewksbury. “These past months have been such a wonderful op-portunity to meet and speak to so many of our outstanding Canadian athletes,” said Sylvie Bernier, Assistant Chef de Mission for the 2012 Canadian Olympic Team. “It’s also been so wonderful to see Canadians come to know more and more of those who will representthem in London.” “Simon is a true inspiration for the entire country. We are proud of what he has accomplished and what he repre-sents. Simon embodies true Canadian values such as lead-ership, dedication and hard work,” said Canadian Olympic Committee President Marcel Aubut. “Thank you Simon for accepting the responsibility on behalf of the entire Cana-dian Olympic Team.” In all, the 2012 Canadian Olympic Team will consist of 277 athletes representing 10 provinces and territories, com-peting in 26 sport disciplines. The Team is supported by 93 coaches and a mission team of 137 staff and volunteers.
